Debus, Stephen. Birds of Prey of Australia. CSIRO Publishing, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643104372.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is an illustrated field guide to diurnal raptors, a bird group that many people find among the most difficult birds to identify. Raptors are popular and iconic birds, and important ecologically as well as in legislation, with some species listed as threatened. Birds of Prey of Australia will enable people to more easily identify them. It also provides a brief overview of the biology of raptors and an indication of the current state of knowledge on them. The book has been completely revised and updated, with 15 years of new data, a section on difficult species-pairs (split-images providing direct contrast), and rearranged in modern field-guide format, making it easy to use and enabling rapid identification of ‘difficult’ raptors. Birds of Prey of Australia will appeal to a wide range of readers, including ornithologists, raptor biologists, birdwatchers, wildlife rescuers/carers, raptor rehabilitators, zookeepers, naturalists, bushwalkers, ecological consultants, fauna authorities, park rangers, state forestry personnel and students. 2013 Whitley Award Commendation for Vertebrate Guide.

Full text
Abstract:
The approximately 800 species of carnivorous plant together provide a classic example of convergent evolution. The known carnivorous species and genera represent nine independent angiosperm lineages. They are united by a suite of five essential traits that together make up the ‘carnivorous syndrome:’ (1) capturing or trapping prey in specialized. usually attractive, traps; (2) killing the captured prey; (3) digesting the prey; (4) absorption of metabolites (nutrients) from the killed and digested prey; and (5) use of these metabolites for plant growth and development. Although many other ‘paracarnivorous’ plants have one or two of these traits, only plants that have all five of them that function in a coordinated way can be considered true carnivorous plants.

Full text
Abstract:
We review the current knowledge of trap anatomy of carnivorous plants, with a focus on the diversity and structure of the glands that are used to attract, capture, kill and digest their prey and finally to absorb nutrients from carcasses of prey. These glands have diverse forms. Regardless of their structure and origin, they have the same functional units, but there are differences in subcellular mechanisms and adaptations for carnivory. We propose a new type of carnivorous plant trap—a ‘fecal traps—which has unique physiology, morphology, and anatomy for attracting the animals that are the source of excrement and also to retain and use it.

Full text
Abstract:
Aposematism is the pairing of two kinds of defensive phenotype: an often repellent secondary defence that typically renders prey unprofitable to predators if they attack them and some evolved signal that indicates the presence of that defence. Aposematic signals often work to modify the behaviours of predators both before and during attacks. Warning coloration, for example, may increase wariness and hence improve the chances that a chemically defended prey is released unharmed after an attack. An aposematic signal may therefore first tend to reduce the probability that a predator commences attack (a primary defence) and then (as a component of secondary defence) reduce the probability that the prey is injured or killed during any subsequent attack. In this chapter we will consider both the primary and the secondary effects of aposematic signals on prey protection. We begin first by describing the common features of aposematic signals and attempting to show the wide use to which aposematic signalling is deployed across animals (and perhaps plants too). We then review the interesting evolutionary issues aposematic signals raise, including their initial evolution and their integration with sexual and other signals. We also discuss important ecological, co-evolutionary, and macroevolutionary consequences of aposematism.

Abstract:
Entering beneath the water surface produces a radical change in perceptual challenges. The eye is no longer able to focus adequately and, with increasing depth, light levels decrease and the spectral properties of ambient light narrows with the result that visual resolution decreases rapidly and colour cues are lost. Diving to depth is rapid which means that perceptual challenges change constantly. This results in a paucity of visual information and olfaction and hearing cannot be used to complement this loss. Amphibious foragers must rely upon minimal cues and very specialized foraging behaviours; some ducks may forage for sessile prey using touch sensitivity in the bill, cormorants use a technique in which they trigger an escape response from a fish which they catch at very short range, while penguins and auks may rely upon minimal cues from photophores on fish and random encounters with prey.

Full text
Abstract:
Protists are involved in many ecological roles in natural environments, including primary production, herbivory and carnivory, and parasitism. Microbial ecologists have been interested in these single-cell eukaryotes since Antonie van Leeuwenhoek saw them in his stool and scum from his teeth. This chapter focuses on the role of protozoa (purely heterotrophic protists) and other protists in grazing on other microbes. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates, 3–5 microns long, are the most important grazers of bacteria and small phytoplankton in aquatic environments. In soils, flagellates are also important, followed by naked amoebae, testate amoebae, and ciliates. Many of these protists feed on their prey by phagocytosis, in which the prey particle is engulfed into a food vacuole into which digestive enzymes are released. This mechanism of grazing explains many factors affecting grazing rates, such as prey numbers, size, and composition. Ingestion rates increase with prey numbers before reaching a maximum, similar to the Michaelis–Menten equation describing uptake as a function of substrate concentration. Protists generally eat prey that are about ten-fold smaller than they are. In addition to flagellates, ciliates and dinoflagellates are often important predators in the microbial world and are critical links between microbial food chains and larger organisms Many protists are capable of photosynthesis. In some cases, the predator benefits from photosynthesis carried out by engulfed, but undigested photosynthetic prey or its chloroplasts. Although much can be learnt from the morphology of large protists, small protists (<10 μ‎m) often cannot be distinguished by morphology, and as seen several times in this book, many of the most abundant and presumably important protists are difficult to cultivate, necessitating the use of cultivation-independent methods analogous to those developed for prokaryotes. Instead of the 16S rRNA gene used for bacteria and archaea, the 18S rRNA gene is key for protists. Studies of this gene have uncovered high diversity in natural protist communities and, along with sequences of other genes, have upended models of eukaryote evolution. These studies indicate that the eukaryotic Tree of Life consists almost entirely of protists, with higher plants, fungi, and animals as mere branches.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 introduces the use of mathematical models and modeling practices in contemporary biological and cognitive sciences. The familiar Lotka–Volterra model of predator–prey relations is used to explain these practices and show how they promote the extensions of predicates, including psychological predicates, into new and often unexpected domains. It presents two models of cognitive capacities that were developed to explain human behavioral data: Ratcliff’s drift-diffusion model of decision-making and Sutton and Barto’s temporal difference model of reinforcement learning. These are now used for fruit flies and neural populations. It also discusses contemporary and ongoing attempts to revise psychological concepts in response to empirical discovery.

Abstract:
Depression and anxiety in college students have reached a crisis, and the prevalence continues to rise. The increasing distress of the current generation, Gen Z, and their greater openness to mental health care have overwhelmed college counseling services. Despite this sobering news, parents can play a critically important role in helping their children. This book describes a plan that parents can use for supporting and preventing depression and anxiety in young people. Each chapter concludes with practical strategies for parents. The book consists of four sections. The first section is a description of adolescent development and the types of depressive and anxious symptoms and disorders. The second section details the foundations that students need to move toward a successful college experience, including family support, communication skills, self-efficacy and problem-solving skills, self-regulation, and distress tolerance. Barriers to optimal development include underage substance use and unsafe sexual relationships. The third section examines vulnerabilities to depression and anxiety, including cognitive distortions, perfectionism, and the stress of being a sexual minority or overweight. Challenges faced by students who are seen as “different” are explored. The final section is a description of life on campus, including the stresses of college life and the opportunities to develop friendships, relationships with faculty, and a more meaningful view of the future. There are also chapters on how to access mental health services before and during college. The book concludes with a call to reduce stress on students and to challenge the competitive individualistic culture in which we live.

Full text
Abstract:
When physically restrained, many animals adopt a relatively immobile state that can last after the constraint has been released. The lack of movement is suggested to inhibit further attack by the predator and reduce the perceived need of the predator to continue to attack or constrain the prey. This phenomenon has been variously called death feigning, animal hypnosis, tonic immobility, and playing dead. However, we will use the term that the scientific literature seems to be coalescing around: thanatosis. Thanatosis is distinct from immobility used to reduce the risk of detection or tracking by a predator, since it acts later in the sequence of a predation event (generally after the prey has been detected and contacted by the predator). Although some instances of thanatosis are strongly suggestive of mimicry of death, some are less so, and there is potential for thanatosis to offer protection from predators through other mechanisms than feigning death. However, except for some very specialist situations considered briefly here, the function of thanatosis does appear to be employed as a means of protection from predators. Thanatosis is widespread taxonomically, and has been well known for a long time, but only recently has it received purpose-designed study.

Abstract:
Chapter 17 “Diet analysis” focuses on the specificities of DNA metabarcoding in the context of diet analyses. It presents the proof-of-concept study, which examined the diet of several herbivore species using next-generation sequencing for the first time. Chapter 17 reports how DNA-based analysis of bison diet helped evaluate the effect of conservation policies in a protected area. The different strategies aiming at disentangling predator and prey sequences in carnivorous diets are reviewed, including the use of a blocking oligonucleotide. Using bear diet as a study case, the issues associated with omnivorous diets are discussed, particularly that of integrating several diet components. Finally, Chapter 17 develops several important methodological and experimental factors to consider in eDNA-based diet analyses. These comprise the source of eDNA, the quantitative aspects, and the use of diet as a proxy of surrounding biodiversity (e.g., as in the case of invertebrate samplers).

Abstract:
This chapter explores the impact on the rules of international law governing the use of force of the conceptualisation of security in terms of risks. It claims that anticipation and decision-making are central to the legal management of risks. For this reason, it first examines the place of pre-emptive and preventive self-defence in international law and then discusses evidentiary issues, decision-making procedures and standards. The political and legal debates over the 2003 military action against Iraq offer a useful background. The chapter aligns international relations approaches to risk, security and war with international law rules on the use of force.

Csete, Joanne, Rick Lines, and Ralf Jürgens. Drug Use and Prison. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199374847.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses protections of the health-related rights of prisoners that are encoded in widely ratified human rights instruments and in guidelines for which there is broad international consensus. People who use drugs while detained or incarcerated, however, rarely enjoy the standard of care to which they are entitled, which includes HIV prevention activities and other services that are available in the community. In some countries, people accused of minor drug infractions may be detained for long periods in centers that purport to provide treatment for drug dependence but are effectively labor camps that do not provide health care and where “patients” face physical abuse and denial of due process. There is an urgent need to establish and scale up health services for people who use drugs in custodial environments, with independent monitoring of the existence and quality of care and measures to ensure that health professionals working with people who use drugs in prison and pre-trial detention can work without interference. More important, however, drug dependence and minor drug infractions that often accompany it should be managed through health and social services rather than criminal sanctions. Reducing the use of prison and pretrial detention as a response to drug use and minor possession may be the most important measure for respecting, protecting and fulfilling the health-related rights of people who use drugs. Compulsory “treatment” centers should be closed in favor of humane care provided in the community.
