The aim of this paper is to present the price stability oriented monetary policy of the European Central Bank. The European Central Bank began activities in 1998 and the primary objective of the European System of Central Banks is to maintain price stability and the ESCB should also support the general economic policies in the Community. Monetary policy is a special tool that national governments and central banks uses to influence on its economy, especially to control the supply of money and to influence on the level of economic indicators. This paper examines link between property prices and monetary policy in New Zealand and Australia. Using an identified VAR model for open economies, we address two questions, i.e., whether a loose monetary policy cause house price appreciation, and whether central banks of the two countries conduct a policy of “leaning against the wind” by responding to house price shocks. Our findings suggest that, following an expansionary monetary policy shock, house prices inflations fall immediately. The impulse response functions showed that tightening monetary policy in Indonesia appreciated the exchange rate in four periods, lowered stock prices in five periods, and increased bond yield in all periods. In this context, the general motivation of this thesis is to use dependent regime models to examine these relations for the Canadian case. In fulfilling its monetary policy role, i.e., ensuring price stability, the central bank chooses one of several monetary policy regimes. Important features of inflation targeting are a publicly announced inflation target, the use of macroeconomic forecasting and open communication between the central bank and the public. The aim of the paper is to present, if exists, the impact of inflation targeting on the gross wage indicator in the Czech Republic. Real economy means the economy of the Czech Republic. Among other things, the thesis will discuss some of the principles and purposes of Inflatio

Abstract:
After the global financial crisis, in addition to providing price stability, which was the primary objective of the Central Banks, the goal of maintaining financial stability has taken its place among the basic monetary policies all over the world. Because, with the effect of globalization, the aim of monetary policy to provide price stability alone is not enough to ensure sustainable growth and welfare. In this sense, macro prudential policies have been developed within the framework of Basel III, the basis of which is formed by BIS. These macro prudential policies are basically defined as pr

Abstract:
We examine the interplay between monetary policy, bank risk-taking, and financial stability in a quantitative macroeconomic model with endogenous risk-taking by banks and systemic crises. Banks’ access to leverage depends on their charter value, which is itself affected by movements in the real interest rate. We find that permanent shifts in the long-term real interest rate have a significant impact on banks’ leverage and on their investments in systemically risky assets, while transitory movements have a more limited impact. We show that in the presence of systemic risk-taking, the systemic c

Using US micro-level data on banks, we document a negative effect of high oil prices on US banks' balance sheets, more negative for highly leveraged banks. We set and estimate a general equilibrium model with banking and oil sectors that rationalizes those findings through the financial accelerator mechanism. This mechanism amplifies the effect of oil price shocks, making them non-negligible drivers of the dynamics of US banks' intermediation activity and of the US real economy. Abstract:
We provide evidence that bank loan supply reactions to monetary policy changes are market-specific, emphasizing the importance of banks’ local specialization. We analyze the U.S. mortgage market and find that when monetary policy eases, banks increase new mortgage lending growth more in markets in which they are geographically specialized relative to other markets and banks. This holds after controlling for local lending opportunities and (unobservable) bank differences. Further empirical findings, supported by a simple model, suggest that banks face market-specific differences in lending adva

This paper raises fundamental questions about how banks in Latin America ought to be supervised. The concentration of wealth holders in Latin America and the equity markets' resulting illiquidity permit investors who control banks to subvert the intent of capital requirements, even when the bank itself is subject to rigorous accounting standards. A number of policy implications follow from the analysis. Three of policy recommendations derived from this analysis can be successfully implemented in the short run. Abstract:
We study the implications of climate change and the associated mitigation measures for optimal monetary policy in a canonical New Keynesian model with climate externalities. Provided they are set at their socially optimal level, carbon taxes pose no trade-offs for monetary policy: it is both feasible and optimal to fully stabilize inflation and the welfare-relevant output gap. More realistically, if carbon taxes are initially suboptimal, trade-offs arise between core and climate goals. These trade-offs however are resolved overwhelmingly in favor of price stability, even in scenarios of decade

Gabriel, Ricardo. Monetary Policy and the Wage Inflation-Unemployment Tradeoff. APHES Working Paper in Economic and Social History, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55462/wpaphes_a_504.

Abstract:
Using newly assembled data for 18 advanced economies between 1870 and 2020, I study how monetary policy affects wage inflation and unemployment and document two key findings regarding their tradeoff. First, the wage Phillips curve displays a time-varying slope. Second, the tradeoff becomes weaker in low price inflation environments due to a more pronounced unemployment response to monetary policy. These findings lend support to the idea that monetary policy has state-dependent effects with the central banks’ ability in exploring the tradeoff being impaired by a low price inflation environment.

Abstract:
We measure the reaction of search for income in mutual funds to supervisory-induced dividend restrictions on euro area banks during the COVID-19 pandemic, which operated as an exogenous shock to payouts in this sector. Using granular data on euro area-based mutual funds’ holdings, we show that demand for dividends motivated portfolio decisions in this period and that these decisions had implications for stock returns. Specifically, we document that there were more sales of bank stocks by income-oriented funds after payout restrictions were set in place. These funds were however less inclined t

On 28 December 2022, the Spanish government announced a temporary Value Added Tax (VAT) rate reduction for selected products. VAT rates were cut on 1 January 2023 and are expected to go back to their previous level by mid-2024. Using a web-scraped dataset, we leverage machine learning techniques to classify each product. Then we study the price effects of the temporary VAT rate reduction, covering the daily prices of roughly 10,000 food products sold online by a Spanish supermarket. At the same time, total and core inflation rates have fallen and remain at low levels, suggesting that a significant element of the reactivation of Colombia’s economy has been related to recovery in potential GDP. This would support the technical staff’s diagnosis of weak aggregate demand and ample excess capacity. The discussion of financial stability, and the role of monetary policy, is incoherent because there is very little agreement on what constitutes financial stability (and, by implication, instability) - exchange rate stability, asset price stability, absence of debt default. By implication, there is a gap between the claims of various authors to the general applicability of their respective analyses, and the actual applicability of their conclusions, let alone the usefulness of some of their policy recommendations. The paper argues that the key issue is the regulation of the liquidity of all fi
