Among Africa's leading twentieth-century poets, Christopher Okigbo occupies a most interesting space. Born to Igbo Roman Catholic parents in Eastern Nigeria, Okigbo studied the Classics and began to write poetry as a means of re-identification with his primal world. Yet both his life and his poetry staked a claim to a universalist impulse, and, as a colonial subject interpreting the postcolonial moment, Okigbo rejected a narrow, essentialist categorization of either himself or his poetry. He rejected the Africa Prize in 1966, claiming that "there is no such thing as African poetry, there is on

The production of Salome songs began shortly after the sensational 1907 U.S. premiere of Richard Strauss's Salome at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Vaudeville performers, beginning with the Met's own prima ballerina, capitalized on the ensuing fad for Salome dances, which the New York Times called “Salomania.” Relevant songs and dances figured in musical comedies and revues until some time after the return of Strauss's opera to the New York sta

Teaching in writing is always

This chapter offers a close reading of Tarkovsky’s diary from a Lacanian perspective by focusing on the director’s recurrent use of those key words which symbolically epitomize and organize the major thematic layers of his biography and cinema as well: namely, grass (or trava in Russian), persecution from the state authorities (travlia), and expense (trata). Phonetically consonant and etymologically derived from the same root tra- (or proto-Slavic ter), these words make up a coherent cluster of signifiers (trava-trata-travlia) which are centred around the director’s primal fantasy of the house. As the author argues, the signifying constellation “trava-trata-travlia” in Tarkovsky’s diary could be viewed as a psychobiographical code to the internal dynamics of his visual imagery

Abstract:
Audiences at Iganz Schuppanzigh’s 1820s quartet concerts in Vienna would have expected a string quartet to be a weighty, four-movement work with an emphasis on a sonata form, thematische Arbeit (motivic working) between parts, and an overall tonal plan based on one or two primary key areas. Beethoven no doubt had such connoisseur listeners in mind with this work, but was pushing far beyond that traditional idea of the string quartet. Op. 131 is full of all sorts of different kinds of writing. The chapter explores the quartet in terms of fantasia, a word found frequently in connection with Op. 131, starting with a discussion of the free fantasia as a work exhibiting apparently chaotic musings over a highly logical ground plan. As Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach pointed out in his influential discussion of the subject, there is method in the seeming madness of the free fantasia, especially as regards harmonic links. The chapter considers the entire work as a fantasia, exploring the clever linkage of seemingly disparate ideas within and between movements. The fantasia form might seem the opposite of the formalized string quartet genre as it was starting to be understood by Beethoven’s time, but in one important respect it was not. The free fantasia was a work for the connoisseur: as Carl Friedrich Michaelis noted in his article on music and humor of 1807, the free fantasia, in particular, reveals to the connoisseur listener the soul (or inventive repository) of the composer.

The one, on the essay’s argument, turns upon Yamashita’s treatment of the Brazil rainforest as ecological fact-fantasy, the other on Ozeki’s pastiche of US media advertising. Both, for Adams, are to be compared as writers who bring a wariest satiric eye to how the earth’s resources risk fatal endangerment.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a comprehensive and chronological bibliographic survey of scholarship on Lois McMaster Bujold from 1995 onwards. The chapter is structured chronologically to show changes in the scholarship on Bujold’s work and, in addition, includes selected online articles to demonstrate that Bujold’s readers are engaged with the same issues as the academics: genre, gender politics, and feminisms. The chapter shows the broad areas of scholarly consensus that exist: primarily, the agreement that Bujold’s work subverts, reverses, or complicates the genre conventions of space opera, military sf, and medievalist fantasy. The primary area of disagreement is shown to be the question of feminism in her work. The chapter is explicitly feminist in that the scholar writing the essay is a feminist specializing in feminist and gender theories and speculative fiction who applies those intellectual frameworks in this essay. It therefore pays close attention to citation practices, and puts on record the extent to which the first work on Bujold’s science fiction and fantasy was done by women scholars working in disability, feminist, and gender studies as well as the extent to which their work makes up the majority of the current scholarship.
