Abstract:
Much of the social choice literature examines direct voting systems, in which voters submit their ranked preferences over candidates and a voting rule picks a winner. Real-world elections and decision-making processes are often more complex and involve multiple stages. For instance, one popular voting system filters candidates through primaries: first, voters affiliated with each political party vote over candidates of their own party and the voting rule picks a candidate from each party, which then compete in a general election. We present a model to analyze such multi-stage elections, and con

Abstract:
The research question of this study was whether voters who participated in presidential primaries cast retrospective votes. This problem was studied with data from CBS News/New York Times exit polls for three 1976 Republican primaries and for ten 1980 Democratic primaries. The analysis suggested that ballots cast in the presidential primaries of the party-in-power were primarily retrospective votes. Statistical controls were introduced for candidate image, ideology, issues, electability, party identification, and socioeconomic status. These controls did not alter the basic finding of retrospec

Facial appearance changes as people talk, move and, change expression. The key indication of this change is the skin color. In current appearance models skin color is reconstructed by considering the scattering and absorption of light within skin layers caused by melanin and hemoglobin in a three dimensional color space. Capturing dynamic facial appearance requires capturing both the temporal deformation of facial geometry and the temporal change of skin color by measuring the hemoglobin concentration change. Existing passive multi-stereo capture systems can capture high resolution temporal fa

Abstract:
Data-driven methods—such as the estimation of primaries by sparse inversion suffer from the 'curse of dimensionality’ that leads to disproportional growth in computational and storage demands when moving to realistic 3D field data. To remove this fundamental impediment, we propose a dimensionality-reduction technique where the 'data matrix' is approximated adaptively by a randomized low-rank factorization. Compared to conventional methods, which need passes through all the data possibly including on-the-fly interpolations for each iteration, our approach has the advantage that the passes are r

Abstract:
Numerical simulations presented here show that demagnetization of crust near the largest Martian basins by secondary impacts can be comparable to that by direct shock waves outside the transient cavity. The relative input from secondary impacts, which demagnetize only the uppermost layers, depends on the magnetic carrier distribution within the crust. Thus, we discuss properties of likely magnetic remanence carriers and their possible spatial distribution within the crust.

Importance of leadership in fostering cohesion within organizations has received increased scholarly attention. Researchers have shown that leadership can lose its legitimacy by pursuing unpopular policies or negating the common interest of the group. However, researchers have not yet been able to establish the leadership issues that shaped the 2016 Republican primaries as President Trump's victory (despite not having the support of any living past United States president both Republican and Democrat), was indicative of masses' frustration with the political establishment, and desire for chang

Abstract:
Predictive multiple suppression methods consist of two main steps: a prediction step, in which multiples are predicted from the seismic data, and a subtraction step, in which the predicted multiples are matched with the true multiples in the data. The last step appears crucial in practice: an incorrect adaptive subtraction method will cause multiples to be sub-optimally subtracted or primaries being distorted, or both. Therefore, we propose a new domain for separation of primaries and multiples via the Curvelet transform. This transform maps the data into almost orthogonal localized events wit

This study explores the role that a faith-driven discourse has played in the electoral success of the Tea Party movement. The popularity of the Tea Party movement among conservative Protestant populations has led researchers to depict an emerging theological political ideology. Few have considered the historical and religious influences on the Tea Party brand, despite the fact that it has garnered support from a segment of the conservative American population which have traditionally used religious rationalisation as the basis for their political opinions.
