To ascertain the effects of conventional hydrochemical components on the presence of endogenous fine loess particles (EFLPs) in groundwater over loess regions, Na+, NO3− and Cu2+, as conventional hydrochemical components, were employed in batch tests with EFLPs from a typical loess as aquifer media in Guanzhong Plain, China. The results showed that EFLPs had high zeta potential (ζ) and remained suspended over 40 h, indicating their good dispersity and potential to be suspended in groundwater. ζ was employed to replace electrostatic repulsion in the DLVO equation to determine the critical coagu

One widely adopted method for stabilizing loess soil foundations in construction is the use of cement-soil cushions (CSC). The relationship between the source and sink of atmospheric CO2 has always been a widely discussed issue in global climate change research. Recent studies revealed that the chemical weathering of carbonate rocks contributed to 1/3 (~0.5 Pg C/yr) of the missing carbon sinks (MCS) globally, and there are still 2/3 of MCS (~0.5 Pg C/yr) that need to be explored. As one of the main overburdened parts of the earth, loess is one of the important driving factors for atmospheric CO2 consumption. Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic brought school systems to a halt across the globe. In Belize, remote learning was challenging owing to limited access to educational technologies and lack of familiarity with remote learning among teachers. This study draws on national standardized exams and specific achievement testing to assess pandemic-related learning losses at the primary education level. Based on administrative data, the study also analyzes changes in student enrollment, dropout rates, and grade repetition at the primary and secondary levels. We find that school closures resulted in significant lear

We use a near-representative household panel survey of ∼19,000 primary-school-aged children in rural Tamil Nadu to study the extent of ‘learning loss’ after COVID-19 school closures, the pace of recovery in the months after schools reopened, and the role of a flagship compensatory intervention introduced by the state government. Students tested in December 2021, after 18 months of school closures, displayed severe deficits in learning of about 0.7 standard deviations (σ) in math and 0.34σ in language compared to identically-aged students in the same villages in 2019. In this Insight Note, we report results of a phone survey that the RISE Tanzania Research team conducted with 2,240 parents (or alternate primary care-givers) of primary school children following the school closures in Tanzania. After the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Tanzania on 16 March 2020, the government ordered all primary schools closed the following day. Schools remained closed until 29 June 2020. Policymakers and other education stakeholders were concerned that the closures would lead to significant learning loss if children did not receive educational support or engagement
