Abstract:
The object of the study is the perception of the "inner" traveler of the nomadic people of the Russian Empire on the example of the Kalmyks. The research material is the "Description of the Kalmyk people" by the poet, translator and publisher A. F. Voeikov (1779-1839), which was based on the diaries of a trip to the south of Russia in 1813. In his travel notes, the writer pays special attention to understanding the customs and traditions of the Kalmyks. The study of Voeykov's biography and work revealed the context of the appeal to the history of the Kalmyks. In the context of the rise of nati

The question of Tahiti population at contact was first addressed by assessing the reliability of early and later estimates, and then by a retrodiction based on the first reliable censuses and data on trends. Cook's famous estimate of 204,000 Tahitians, affected by a wrong number of districts, has been reworked based on his own and the Forsters' observations, using coast length and the age and sex structure of Tahiti population at contact in relation to infanticide, resulting in a range of 156,000-188,000 persons in 1774, before Boenechea's flu in 1772 and the 1774 flu epidemics. The article discusses the idea, proposed by Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864), that Odin was the second moderniser of the Lithuanian/Baltic society of the second century BC. The article first examines Daukantas’s interest in Odin’s history and introduces Daukantas’s extracts from various sources. Daukantas outlined the information about archaeological findings near the Black Sea, which are evidence of previous contacts of local inhabitants, in particular from Crimea, with the peoples on the Baltic coast (amber jewellery), about stone records with the names of Hermes and Mercury, about Odin’s origi

The problem raised in this article is that since the discovery of rock art, the scientific community has been facing many questions related to the development of rock art and its semantic basis. It is becoming more and more difficult for us to call rock paintings the product of only religious or magical ideas, how researchers of the last century thought about it, and it is obviously simply impossible to look into the minds of people who lived thousands of years ago. The topic of cave paintings is a complex issue, for the study of which we must involve not only archaeological research methods,

In the mid-1950s-1960s the Soviet Orientalists were facing serious challenges. The collapse of the colonial system, the growth of national liberation movements, the entry of new forces that did not fit into the rigid framework of the Communist ideas about the revolutionary process, demanded realistic explanations of what was happening. The article attempts to consider some breakthrough ideas and assessments of historical events in the Middle East put forward by the Soviet experts. Abstract The emphasis in studies of women in society has shifted in the past forty years. Early writings revolved around women’s traditional roles and centered on their position in the family in “primitive” societies. Anthropologists hailing from other countries produced descriptions of kinship, marriage, and local customs in small communities and examined women’s lives in those settings. Men’s and women’s roles were considered essentially complementary. Narrow in focus as they were, such works were not intended to investigate the broader social and economic milieu nor even to consider economi

This chapter discusses writing on Welsh history in the early and middle decades of the eighteenth century. It begins by outlining some of the new contexts in which this writing was produced, including a growth in print culture facilitated by increasing literacy and the foundation of Welsh societies in London such as the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion (1751). Second, it assesses the significance of two works, both composed by Anglican clergymen from Welsh gentry families, that gave fresh impetus to the quest for distant origins.
