Abstract:
Even though they may not be selected as applicable law by the forum's rules relating to choice of law or recognized under its rules relating to the recognition of foreign decisions, certain foreign norms can - by virtue of their being treated as mandatorily applicable by the public authorities of the foreign state from which they emanate - have factual effects which the forum will have to take into consideration in evaluating the parties' conduct. The practice of the courts is to consider, where appropriate, the intervention of foreign public authorities in the performance of a - contractual or extracontractual - obligation as giving rise to an impossibility fo performance (or force majeure). -- from a methodological viewpoint, that method of taking foreign norms into consideration is clearly distinct from the application of choice-of-law or recognition-of-decisions rules. The reason behind it can be explained through the datum theory (b. Currie, a. Ehrenzweig). As a practical matter, the approach which consists in thus taking account of foreign mandatory rules of conduct - the courts' traditional approach in this specific field - may be deemed adequate, and its results can be compared favourably to those of two alternative methods: the act of state doctrine and the theory of unilateralist application of foreign mandatory laws (or sonderanknupfung)

Martin, Neill. "A reading of 'Prince Hohenstiel-Schwangau" /." Thesis, McGill University, 1992. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=61328.

Abstract:
Browning's long dramatic monologue Prince Hohenstiel-Schwangau was published in 1871. No second edition was required. General critical opinion judges the poem a failure both in conception and execution. It has not been anthologised since the beginning of the century and survives only as academic property.
After a summary of existing criticism, the historical and biographical background is examined and a possible motivation for the poem's appearance is suggested. This is followed by what is certainly the first in-depth study of the manuscript. Close examination contributes to our understanding of the mechanics of Browning's poetry.
The bulk of the thesis is devoted to a close reading of the poem, a disentangling of the syntax which, apart from the poem's length, seems to be the main reason for its unpopularity.
A short conclusion argues for the poem's restoration to the canon.

Abstract:
On September 4, 1870, the Second Empire collapsed following the defeat at Sedan. The Bonapartist Party was annihilated. Despite this, several bases of popular support subsisted, resulting in the creation of the party “l'Appel au people” (1872). After Napoleon III's death (1873) the advent of his son, the Prince Imperial, confirmed the resurrection of the Bonapartist Party. But their hopes were short lived; he was killed in Zululand in June, 1879. According to the order of succession, the new pretender should have been Prince Napoleon, the Emperor's only first cousin. However, Napoleon III's son defied imperial legislation in his will by selecting Prince Victor, Prince Napoleon's eldest son, as his political successor. This decision created an irreparable rupture between father and son and placed Prince Victor at the head of the Bonapartist Party for four decades. However, his political reign marked the definitive decline of the Bonapartist cause. Furthermore, in terms of Bonapartism as a political force, he seemed to many to personify the last nail in its coffin. In reality, faced with the Bonapartist movement's lack of electoral power, Prince Victor took upon himself the duty of remembrance, which soon became the sole medium through which he could revive the cult of imperial glory. By studying Prince Victor we delve into the intimate world of the heir of an old reigning family condemned to exile. We discover the peculiarities of this singular life in which he was torn between the duty of reviving his political cause, and the lifestyle of a pretender in exile

Allan, Elizabeth Louise. "Trophodynamics of the benthic and hyperbenthic communities inhabiting the Sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands : stable isotope and fatty acid signatures." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006350.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate spatial changes in the trophic and energy pathways of the benthic community in the shallow shelf waters of the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (PEI). A combination of stable isotope and fatty acid analyses were used to provide a time-integrated view of the assimilated feeding history of selected components of the PEI benthic community. This study forms part of the larger project entitled “Variability in the Southern Ocean ecosystems” and is a contribution to the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP). During austral autumn 2009, benthic specimens were collected from 10 stations (from depths of 70 to 295 m) in different regions around the PEI: inter-island shelf (upstream, between and downstream of the islands) and nearshore. Historical data were combined with new data collected during 2009 to assess the long-term trends in the feeding ecology of the benthos in the region of the islands. The stable isotope and fatty acid signatures of the benthic suspension- and deposit-feeding organisms generated during this study suggested that these two communities incorporated both phytoplankton and kelp in their diets. Stable isotope, and to a lesser extent fatty acid signatures, indicated that kelp contributed more to the diets of those organisms in close proximity to the kelp beds (nearshore stations) than those from the inter-island region. Overall, however, pelagic phytoplankton was the dominant food source in the diets of all organisms, even for those living near the kelp beds. Notable exceptions were the sponges and bryozoans, in which kelp and phytoplankton contributed similar proportions to their diets, most likely resulting from a size restricted feeding mode. There were, therefore, no distinct spatial differences in the importance of the various food sources. However, fatty acid compositional data indicated increased food quality between and within the lee of the islands compared to upstream. The organisms collected upstream of the PEI had substantially lower quantities of total fatty acids (TFAs) than organisms of the same species collected from nearshore, open shelf or downstream stations. The increased food quality between and within the lee of the islands was likely a result of the “island mass effect”, which reflects increased phytoplankton concentrations at the PEI. The fatty acid profiles of hyperbenthic shrimp Nauticaris marionis, a key species in the PEI ecosystem, revealed no distinct ontogenetic or spatial patterns. This result is in contrast to the stable isotope analyses, which detected both spatial and ontogenetic differences in the diet of the shrimp. Nearshore shrimp were more ₁₃C-enriched than those from the inter-island region, suggesting increased kelp entering the food web within these regions. In addition, the shrimps demonstrated enrichment in δ₁₃C and δ₁₅N signatures with an increase in size, resulting in a relatively distinct separation of size classes, thus reflecting niche separation through their diets. The fatty acid profiles revealed that the shrimp all contained large proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and essential fatty acids (EFAs), indicating that the quality of food consumed was similar among size class and region despite the niche separation and variation in carbon sources utilised. In addition, diatom and dinoflagellate fatty acids (20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3, respectively) occurred in the highest proportions in N. marionis, highlighting the importance of phytoplankton (indirectly) in their diet. These results represent strong evidence that phytoplankton is an importance food source in the PEI ecosystem. The temporal investigation of isotope signatures in the benthos at the PEI indicated that N. marionis demonstrated an overall depletion in δ₁₃C signatures over the period of 1984 to 2009 (nearshore: -2.55 ‰, inter-island: -2.32 ‰). Overall, the benthic community showed similar depletions in δ13C signatures (from -1.96 to -4.70 ‰), suggesting that shifts have occurred in the carbon signatures at the base of the food web. The depletion in δ₁₃C signatures of the benthos at the PEI most likely reflects increased contributions of smaller slow growing phytoplankton cells (more depleted signatures than large fast growing cells) in the diets of these organisms over time. These diet shifts, in turn, suggest a decrease in productivity has occurred at the islands, likely due to a decreased frequency and intensity of the “island mass effect”. Decreased phytoplankton productivity at the PEI likely results from the southward shift in the average position of the sub-Antarctic Front (SAF), most likely in response to climate change, which in turn promotes flow-through conditions rather than retention at the PEI.

Abstract:
I have examined the symbolism of the snake in the popular french book The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The purpose with this study was to get a deeper understanding of the book by finding out what the snake represents. I have used a number of websites and several books to be able to cover the subject, which turned out to be immense. I started by finding out what kind of snake it corresponds to in reality, based on the images and informations given in the novel. I investigated the symbolism of the colour of the snake as well as the symbolism of snakes in different cultures, religions and civilizations. I also examined the fable genre, and the role of snakes in fables, since the novel belongs to this genre. The last part of my essay consists of an analysis of the author to find out why he chose a snake. My conclusion is that he chose the snake (a cobra) for its symbolic meaning of "renaissance" and that the colour is also important for the symbolism of this character.

Since 1572, after the release of Os Lusíadas, the life and work of Luís Vaz de Camões became object of many forms of appropriation; for an example the present thesis, especially in the second part A Ética nos Lusíadas. The purpose here isn t verify qualitatively the hard work of many thinkers and researchers which, throughout the last five centuries, have deeply worked over The prince of the poets of his age. This thesis wants to trace the historical and literary trajectory of the Camões presence in Portuguese Literature, from the 16th century to 20th. Based on the concept of ethics from Eduardo Lourenço, this thesis will investigate it intern and externally.

The PRINCE algorithm is a faster and more advanced version of a combination attack. Non-distributed password breaking often encounters its limits, and its applicability to real tasks decreases due to the increasing demand for computing resources of the device. The aim of this work is to design a distributed version of the the PRINCE attack as an extension of Fitcrack system, which focuses on distributed password cracking. The proposed design is implemented and integrated into the Fitcrack system. The work examines the PRINCE attack on a set of experiments, which examines the impact of various configuration options. Part of the experimental part is a comparison of the PRINCE attack with the dictionary and combination attack. The purpose of the comparison is to find cases where the PRINCE attack is better than other attacks. Finally, the integrated PRINCE attack solution in the Fitcrack system is compared with the solution implemented in the Hashtopolis system.

Abstract:
Essay on political and educational unknown literature at the beginning of the seventeenth century, in France. By confrontation of theoretical treatises and the diary of Jean Héroard, physician of the young son of Henri the fourth, we can see what is the thought of the education of the prince. Influenced by middle ages treatises, and also by Erasmus and Machiavelli, the authors of the beginning of the seventeenth century try to define relations between politics and moralities

Abstract:
Virtually all African autocrats now govern with parliaments and organize regular, multiparty elections. They have little choice. Since the end of the Cold War, Western governments have required nominally democratic institutions in exchange for aid, investment, and debt relief. With violent repression impossible to conceal from the international community, life as an autocrat has grown more difficult. Since 1989, autocrats forced to govern with nominally democratic institutions have been 80% more likely to lose power than their counterparts. Between 1986 and 2000, the number of autocracies in Africa fell from 45 to 30. The rate of democratization has slowed, for Africa's autocrats learned to survive democratic institutions. To understand how, this dissertation focuses on the Republic of Congo, ruled by Denis Sassou Nguesso for all but five years since 1979. Using original data on the Congolese elite, their political parties, elections, and the security apparatus, this dissertation finds that Africa's autocrats confront challenges old and new with different constraints. Accordingly, they find different solutions. Whereas autocrats once relied on single parties to prevent elite coups, they now secure compliance with social tools. By redefining the pool of candidates for the regime's critical positions, Africa's autocrats employ a "politics of hope," which induces loyalty when elites are excluded from the regime. To monitor appointees, Africa's contemporary autocrats create social institutions, in which new recruits interact with trusted aides. Autocrats supplement these with parallel governments, which force elites separated by cleavages to compete against each other. When Africa's autocrats deploy these monitoring devices effectively, they forgo arbitrary purges in favor of tenure policies that reward competence. The international community's insistence on elections creates "focal moments," when citizens sense their shared discontent. Since they believe international attention will shield them from repression, opposition leaders mobilize unrest. This institutional landscape compels autocrats to fashion electoral alliances with opposition leaders. By joining the regime they once impugned, opposition leaders sacrifice public credibility for ministerial perquisites. Popular goodwill constitutes an insurance policy, and so Africa's autocrats commission surrogates to generate it. With repression less credible, autocrats construct their security apparatuses to threaten violence without provoking it.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is an analysis and an evaluation of the re-translation into Swedish of "Le Petit Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (T2), published by Modernista in 2015, and its relation to the original French text as well as to the classical Swedish translation published by Rabén&Sjögren in 1952 (T1; the 2015 version, contemporary with the re-translation). The analysis is based on some concepts of Lita Lundquist (2007): the distinction between "imitative" and "functional" translation strategies, and the coherence between a "global strategy" and "local strategies". Furthermore, this analysis leads us to a distinction between "translation" and "revision" as presented by Philippe Bouquet (2012), and to a distinction between a linguistic definition of translation – the main approach of this work – and the scoiolinguistic definition by Toury (1995). The main results are 1) the discovery of a lack of a coherent global strategy in T2 – as opposed to T1 - and 2) the strong reliance of T2 on T1. Also, we found a remarkable local strategy in T2, a total removal of the Swedish personal pronoun man. These results are briefly discussed in the light of socio-cultural aspects and in a section on the applicability of the retranslation hypothesis (Tegelberg 2014).

Cole, Margaret Wrenn. "Llywelyn ab Iorwerth : the making of a Welsh prince." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2558.

Full text
Abstract:
Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (1173-1140) has long been considered one of the leading heroes of Wales. The life and rule of Llywelyn, known as Llywelyn the Great, is explored in detail in this thesis. The grandson of Owain Gwynedd, ruler of North Wales from 1137-1170, Llywelyn grew up during the period of turmoil following Owain’s death. After wresting control of Gwynedd from his rival family members in the latter decade of the 12th century, he proceeded to gain recognition as the foremost representative of Wales on the political stage. Although viewed as a legendary hero in Welsh history, poetry and culture, Llywelyn's route to power is more complex than that. The thesis explores the development of the man from rebel and warlord, to leader and spokesman, to statesman, traces the expansion of his hegemony throughout Wales, and discusses the methods he used to gain and maintain power. Particular attention is paid to his use of family, marriage, allies, rivals and the church to achieve his goals. These insights can be derived from the surviving charters, letters, and other acta of Llywelyn and the Royal Chancery of England, the titles accorded therein, Welsh and English chronicles, as well as, occasionally, Venedotian Poetry. Finally, this thesis seeks to address the limitations on Llywelyn’s successes, in light of succeeding events and concludes with a discussion of Llywelyn’s legendary status in the modern world.

Full text
Abstract:
My scientific and philological investigation is like a catharsis on a level with the political sense of Nero princeps. The thesis's hearth is a corpus about 41 authors of languages, cultures, origins and differents opinions that 12 centuries separate. Ln order to facilitate his reading, his commentary and to follow the vocabulary evolution, the authors are presented in a chronological order. We want to know if there are 4 interpretations -latin, greek, religious and byzantine¬about who is politically Nero. Seneca is the decisive thinker in matters of Nero's political designation. His major creation lies in the Nero aesar's concept whose puts this 2 nomina at the level of political idea. This invention operate with the rebirth of « ['idée de royauté» linked to the princeps. With the religious, Nero privatus and Nero princeps confound themselves. Nero becomes the Beast, the terrestrial delegate of Satan. Ln virtue of this, he is necessary a powerful personage who can compete in his human proportion with the divine. This confusion finds a final resolution with the byzantines who, by proceeding to the semantic's graduation of the princely evolution towards the omnipotence, put in relief the partition's straitness whose compart the prince, being almost superhuman, than the man' victim of one's pulses and weaknesses. Zosime then Zonaras create a concept -monarchia- recapitulating 10 centuries of discussion and instituting Nero founder of political form of govemment. This 4 groups, in spite of different approaches and opinions, have understood the Seneca's message that corroborate since to the 12 century behind the name Nero became concept, exists a real political programme

Gurney, Leigh Josephine. "An ecosystem study of the Prince Edward Archipelago (Southern Ocean)." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45694.

Full text
Abstract:
This study brings together the wealth of data available for the Prince Edward Islands marine ecosystem and consolidates it into a network, mass-balanced model (using Ecopath). Biomass estimates for the land based top predators show penguins dominate the system for all three time periods assessed (1960s, 1980s and 2000s). The islands appear to have a carrying capacity which may be declining. A consumption model shows a change in prey for the land based top predators from one in which both crustaceans and myctophid fish were of equal importance in the 1960s, to one dominated by myctophids for the 2000s period. The contribution of the sources of primary production were assessed through the ecosystem model with open ocean productivity dominating at all but the smallest scale (shelf region), where the macrophyte production was important. The model describes the marine ecosystem for each of the above mentioned time periods at the scale of the Exclusive Economic Zone and, when compared to other subantarctic and Antarctic systems for which there are ecosystem models, the system was most similar to the neighbouring Kerguelen Islands. An investigation into the ecosystem boundary size was conducted, with all constituents able to satisfy their energetic requirements if considered at the scale of the EEZ. Using the dynamic temporal simulation approach (Ecosim), the model was able to successfully hindcast three past events: the fur seal exploitation, Patagonian toothfish fishery, and the effect of cat predation on small flying birds. In each instance the model performed well for the directly impacted groups. Potential ecosystem effects of climate change were explored through simulations of increasing and decreasing productivity. No single scenario was able to replicate observed patterns and a suite of drivers needs to be considered to reproduce observed patterns. The inclusion of energetic density of prey led to improvements in consumption rate estimates for the static models and should be incorporated into estimates to improve ecosystem model parameterization. The work constitutes the first ecosystem model for the PEIs that can be used as a tool for an ecosystem approach to marine resource management.

Green, David S. "The household and military retinue of Edward the Black Prince." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1998. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10912/.

Full text
Abstract:
The household and military retinue of Edward the Black Prince (1330-1376) was created in the early years of the Hundred Years W ar. This thesis examines the role which the retinue played in that conflict and how the administration of the prince's estates contributed to that effort through the provision of troops, supplies and finance. It aims to place the Black Prince and his retainers annuitants and servants in a national context, investigating their role in the Hundred Years War and A nglo-Gascon political society, whilst also highlighting the individual and collective roles that they played in the prince's retinue. It also demonstrates something of the atmosphere evident within the household through the examples of the chivalric ethic and religious attitudes. These elements are also seen in the links that existed between members of the retinue and household that were created by their common service to the Black Prince but also through a variety of other associations ,familial, financial, political and geographical. The particular status of the heir-apparent governed the nature of his retinue and comparisons are drawn with the other great bastard feudal a ssociations of the day, particularly the royal household and the Lancastrian affinity. The thesis concludes with a biographical appendix, which highlights certain careers and summarises those of others with a wide range of links to the Black Prince.

Niblock, Sarah Anne. "Prince : negotiating the meanings of femininity in the mid-1980s." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2005. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/13625/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will critically evaluate the most abiding theories of female subjective development, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the complexity and autonomy of femininity. There has been a general paucity of scholarly interrogation of female subjectivity and female consumption in both psychoanalysis and Cultural Studies. This investigation offers much-needed, original insights into an area that has received very little academic attention since the 1970s and 1980s. In order to do this, the thesis will utilise psychoanalytical and Cultural Studies approaches to reflexively analyse the impact of the visual figure of the pop star Prince on his young female fans in the mid-1980s. Prince's enormous appeal to his young female fans in Britain was orchestrated predominantly on the visual plane. Although his musical talent was self-evident, his visual signification was his most striking intervention into contemporary debates on gender relations at a significant moment of cultural shift in gender relations. Psychoanalytically-informed analyses of female fans' responses to Prince's visual signification will identify an active and productive female subject. Such accounts are important in contradicting prominent Cultural Studies conceptualisations of female consumption of popular cultural texts, which render femininity as passive. The thesis will argue that the psychoanalytical and the cultural need articulating together in order to develop a convincing model of female autonomy and identification. That is, the inner and the outer of female subjectivity require simultaneous interrogation, if we are to make sense of how Prince's female fans consumed and negotiated his identity. In this way, female sUbjectivity might be understood as being an articulation of inner psychodynamics of subject formation and the social world of cultural meaning and signification.

Abstract:

Objective: The purpose of this DNP Project was to investigate factors that influence the sustainability of a prior nursing physical assessment education intervention with intensive care unit (ICU) nurses working at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Haiti.

Methods: A qualitative design, utilizing focus group interviews and direct observation was used. Two focus group interviews were held at St. Luke’s Hospital. Participants were identified via purposeful sampling, with the aid of key informants, to include Haitian nursing and medical administration, ICU staff nurses, and physicians that participated in the prior nursing education intervention. An interpreter was present during the interviews. The interviews were audio taped, allowing verbatim translation and transcription into English. The transcription was analyzed to identify themes regarding factors that influenced the sustainability of the prior nursing physical assessment education.

Findings: The majority of themes identified in the nursing focus group interview were mirrored in the physician focus group interview and aligned with current literature. These included staffing, nursing knowledge regarding physical assessments, and continuing education. The nursing focus group indicated that ongoing communication and collaboration were factors influencing sustainability. In the physician focus group, the theme of interdisciplinary integration also emerged.

Conclusion: There is limited literature discussing the factors that influence sustainability of nursing education in developing countries. A program evaluation to examine these factors for the prior nursing education at St. Luke’s Hospital had not been conducted. Findings indicate that there are numerous factors that influenced the sustainability of the prior nursing physical assessment education intervention. Although these findings are not transferable to other settings or populations, understanding means to increase sustainability may be influential in future nursing education endeavors with St. Luke’s Hospital in Haiti.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (p. 115-128).
This critical ethnographic study is concerned with dynamics of race and space in Prince Albert, a rural South African town. Proceeding in the wake of previous studies which have identified mechanisms of informal segregation in urban, post-apartheid contexts, this study aims to explore the ways in which transformation, as a national imperative to democratize South Africa‘s economic, political, and social landscape, is taking shape in small rural towns. It is found that fifteen years after the end of apartheid, Prince Albert’s coloured and white residents remains spatially segregated. It is argued here that this persistent segregation and inequality has become further entrenched by changes which have occurred upon the arrival of white middle class English speaking South Africans during the past fifteen years. Specifically, in advocating for the protection of Prince Albert’s ‘heritage value’ and concomitant development of the tourism industry, these new residents exert a symbolic control of space which centers their own interests and identities and ultimately re-assigns coloured residents a peripheral, disenfranchised socio-economic status.

Abstract:
Our research, without giving a long-term study, highlights the index on urban development of Haiti's Capital Port au Prince. The main idea of our work, supported for several years, is to stress on important elements of the issue, in particular its historic evolution and specific environment of haitian Government. Thanks to an historic graph, based on description, it seems to us in the wake of our first researches, that the years of the American invasion in Haiti ( 1915-1934), secondly the years before the Duvalier dictature ( 1957-1986) play a main role concerning the development of Port au Prince. Then, our historian look focuses on this decisive period. Are the years 1915-1956 responsible for the fail regarding the development attempt of Haiti's Capital, as the Haitian and foreign Authorities wish it? The theme of urban development covers a study in three cases on which we come back regularly in this work: projects of modernization, or transformation of urban structures; planning programs by the Authority in power, like foreign leaders or Haitian Administrations ( State, city council). Finally, assessment of companies regarding the Capital, about its urban crisis and management of the growth by the authorities. Then, we stress on a political history way concerning the urban fact. How is the capital's city centre managed, governed by its authorities in a period of crucial transformations for the country

Abstract:
In this thesis I analyse the travels of D. Pedro V, King of Portugal (1837-1861) from the prism of a 19th century visual culture. His travel diaries mirror the inseparability of image and word in a century that was so eager to fill the encyclopaedia entries with visual examples. Before acceding to the throne, the young prince undertook two Grand Tours in Europe. The first one, in 1854, found him in England most of the time, while his second tour, in 1855, had France and the Exposition Universelle, held in Paris, as its major destiny. This event well illustrates what his interests were: the sight of objects from all over the world was made possible; contemporary ideas of instruction through amusement, progress and civilisation were experienced; technologies of display from other institutions were employed; an all-encompassing visual experience, in a reduced space and in a limited amount of time was provided - while also needing the written word to make sense of the visible. All these aspects are intrinsic to the journeys of a prince who had instruction as his main objective. However, even if inscribed in the traditional educational aims of the Grand Tour model, these travels have many different ways of achieving them. D. Pedro is mostly interested in the urban centres of those countries where the future was already visible. Be it through industrial and engineering developments or railways, be it in the many public spaces of exhibition created by the 19th century to classify and display the world. If collections are a major part of his travelling programme, collecting is the word that better describes its aims: collecting sights and knowledge; collecting the journeys through writing them; and collecting by acquiring natural history specimens for his museum. Abroad was to be taken Home.

Abstract:
While the terrestrial ecosystem of the Prince Edward Island Group has been subject to intensive research, the marine ecosystem has to a large extent been neglected. This together with the possible existence of an "island effect" at these islands, as was first proposed after the visit to these islands of the French vessel Marion Dufresne, led to the initiation of a programme to determine the distribution of standing stocks and the productivity of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the neritic seas of these islands. To do this and before a detailed biological survey could be attempted, it was first necessary to define the physical and chemical properties of the circuminsular waters. This dissertation discusses the results of several surveys to these islands in the light of a possible "island effect" and comments upon processes likely to influence such an effect
