Abstract:
Numerous studies investigate high-stakes personnel evaluation systems in education, but nearly all focus on evaluation of teachers. We instead examine the evaluation of school principals at scale using data from the first 4 years of implementation of Tennessee’s multiple-measure administrator evaluation system. We focus specifically on the rubric-based practice ratings given by principals’ supervisors that constitute one half of principals’ overall evaluation scores. We find that supervisors’ ratings are internally consistent, relatively stable over time, and predictive of other performance measures, such as student achievement growth and teachers’ ratings of school leadership quality. However, raters fail to differentiate dimensions of principal practice, and ratings may be biased by factors, such as school poverty, outside the principal’s control.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the principal's strategic management in developing a conducive school environment. The research method used is a descriptive quantitative research using a questionnaire instrument with a sample of 20 teachers. The results of the study, namely the management of the principal's strategy for teachers in developing a conducive school environment at SDN 2 Gorontalo were in the good category with an average percentage of around 75.67%. This percentage gain is an accumulation of the dimensions of the principal's planning strategy in developing a conducive school environment which is in the good category with a percentage of 75%, the dimensions of the principal's implementation strategy in developing a conducive school environment are in the good category with a percentage of 77%, and follow-up strategies principals in developing a conducive school environment are in the good category with a percentage of 75%. The position of the principal when acting as the principal is very strategic or supportive to create a school environment. Because, the core element of the organizational environment is the relationship between school personnel, in the role of the principal when he becomes the principal it is stated that he has a function in realizing harmonious human relations to foster and develop cooperation between personnel.

Abstract:
The present study is an attempt towards identification of principal agricultural and socio-economic dimensions in Haryana using principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correlation analysis techniques. Principal component analysis transforms the original set of variables into a smaller set of linear combinations that account for most of the variation of the original data whereas canonical correlation analysis determines pairs of canonical variates which are orthogonal linear combinations of the variables within each set that best explain the variability both within and between sets. Canonical correlation analysis also identifies and measures the strength of relationships between two vectors of variables measured on the same individuals. The study was conducted for three periods i.e. 1991-92, 2001-02 and 2011-12. The district was considered as the unit of analysis and analysis is based on 19 indicators from the agriculture sector and 9 indicators from the socio-economic sector. The first principal component (PC) of agriculture sector represents the overall level of agriculture and livestock with 42.07, 28.71, and 28.01 per cent of the total variation in periods 1991-92, 2001-02 and 2011-12. Whereas, the first PC of socio-economic sector extracted 43.2, 42.6 and 56.6 per cent variation for the periods 1991-92, 2001-02 and 2011-12, respectively. Population density per sq km, number of vehicles on road/lakh population and number of cooperative societies/lakh population have been most important variables for the first principal component from the socio-economic sector in the periods 1991-92 and 2001-02. However, infant mortality rate, number of vehicles on road/lakh population and main workers as percentage of total population has observed to be the most important indicators during 2011-12. Canonical analysis of first two PCs from each of the agriculture and socio-economic sector indicated that the dimensions represented by the second principal component of agriculture sector and first principal component of socio-economic sector established a strong association between the agriculture and the socio-economic sectors. The significant canonical correlation between the vectors represented by first two PCs of agricultural and socio-economic sectors suggest that developments in socio-economic sectors and agricultural sectors go together. That is socio-economic development in Haryana can be achieved through development in agriculture.

Abstract:
The paper presents an optimization method for the ship hull principal dimensions scheme employing the fuzzy decision-making theory. First of all, the paper establishes the fuzzy decision-making model of the ship hull principal dimensions optimization, and then a series of ship hull principal dimensions schemes are accordingly constructed by employing the variable value method. On the basis of this, the fuzzy decision-making method is employed to evaluate the series ship hull principal dimensions schemes. Finally, the optimal ship hull principal dimensions scheme is obtained. The example demonstration verified the proposed method’s validity for ship hull principal dimensions optimization economic performance.

Abstract:
This research aims to find out the competence of school principals in educational leadership and examine the leadership competence of school principals who are effective in improving the quality of education. This research uses qualitative methods with data collection and analysis techniques by searching for literature through several books and scientific articles as well as other trusted sources. A leader is a figure who can be trusted and fosters a strong sense of loyalty towards his teammates. Leadership is one of several factors that determine an organization's ability to succeed. The principal is the person who leads the school. Effective leadership to organize, motivate, and influence leadership in organizations, which also summarizes performance and success. As an action, leadership functions to help achieve previously established work programs. Leaders encourage their subordinates to do things. According to Hersey and Blanchard, the four main dimensions of the principal's role are delegation, coaching, direction, and support. Becoming a school principal is not easy, because a school principal has various responsibilities and roles, one of which is being a strict school principal.

Abstract:
This research was designed with the primary purpose of identifying the dimensions of principal support perceived by public high school teachers in Virginia and identifying the relationship between principal support and organizational citizenship behaviors. In addition, this study also examined the relationship between principal support and student achievement; organizational citizenship and student achievement, as well as the interaction of Principal Support, Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and Student Achievement when controlling for SES. Participants in the study were self-selected after being contacted by a member of a team of researchers from The College of William & Mary. Thirty-four schools elected to participate in the survey which required teachers in the selected high schools to complete one of the two forms of the School Social Variables Survey. For this study, data were collected using the Organizational Citizenship Behaviors in Schools Survey, the Principal Support Survey, and Standard of Learning Test results for the areas of Algebra II, Biology, English 11 Reading, and World History I. SES was accounted for by calculating the percentage of free and reduced price lunch students served in each building.;This study found that principal support has two dimensions; expressive support and instrumental support. Only expressive support was found to have a significant positive relationship with organizational citizenship behavior. In addition, this study found that there was a significant and positive correlation between SES and all measures of student achievement. It also found that there was a significant positive correlation between Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and the measures of student achievement for Biology and English 11.;No significant correlation was found between instrumental support and organizational citizenship, either dimension of principal support and student achievement, or organizational citizenship and the student achievement measures of Algebra II or World History I.

Abstract:
Principals need to possess leadership skills and behaviors that help set expectations for collaborative work. The problem in this case study was that little was known about the collaboration-building behaviors principals use that promote effective collaboration between members of the school community. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and describe the behaviors principals exhibit when building collaboration through the implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). The conceptual framework was based on 3 elements: leadership styles and approaches, collaboration, and the implementation of effective PLCs. The primary research question explored how principal behaviors contribute to collaborative professional learning communities. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 6 elementary principals from a Mid-Atlantic State. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and document review of PLC structures. Data were coded using a Microsoft Word Doc Data Extract tool and analyzed for themes using an inductive process. Emergent themes for building collaboration were identified as leadership traits, vision, time, collaborative structures, culture, and the need for professional learning. Results suggest that shared leadership, vision, collective learning, and supportive conditions influence the effective development of PLCs. As a result, professional learning opportunities are recommended for school leaders on strategies that successfully develop supportive and collaborative structures in schools. Implications for social change are that PLCs may strengthen professional practice in classrooms, schools, districts, and communities.

Abstract:
This study examines the relation between the prerequisites of principals in compulsory schools and to what extent they hence engage in instructional leadership. Three main questions are therefore posed which seek to describe how frequently the principals say that they engage in instructional leadership, how the principals say that their prerequisites are and to what extent these prerequisites affect their ability to be instructional leaders. A hypothesis is formulated that principals with favourable prerequisites are more likely to engage in an instructional leadership. To define instructional leadership Viviane Robinsons leadership dimensions ”planning, coordinating and evaluating teaching and the curriculum” and ”promoting participating in teacher learning and developement” are used as the foundation for the operationalisation of questions in the survey. The study finds that most of all the national principal education program affects the principals ability to be instructional leaders. Also the school managerand the municipal political board are important factors for the principals engagement in instructional leadership. Furthermore this study implicates that prerequisites, such as the number of employees or the time the principals say they have to be instructional leaders, have no, or almost no, effect on how frequently the principals engage in instructional leadership.

Olarnsakul, Tavin. "Are Personality Traits a Viable Indicator of the Agency and Disposition Effect?" Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1384.

Full text
Abstract:
Can the HEXACO personality dimensions and facets be used to explain the principal-agent problem and the disposition effect? The proposed research is designed to address the relationship between personality dimensions and individuals’ propensity to engage in self-interested behavior (agency effect) and irrational investment decisions (disposition effect). This paper proposes a correlational study that will be one of the first to apply Ashton and Lee’s (2009) HEXACO framework of personality to examine the association between the six personality dimensions and measurements of the agency and disposition effect. The HEXACO model of personality dimension includes Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, Openness to Experience, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Agreeableness. Total participants in both experiments will be 480 undergraduate college students. Participating students will complete the HEXACO-60 self-report inventory and take part in a stock simulation where measurements of interests are recorded. Higher scores along the Honesty-Humility and Emotionality dimensions are expected to have a strong negative relationship with the agency effect measurement, while Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, and Extraversion will have a weak to moderate positive association. Higher scores along the Emotionality dimensions are expected to have a strong negative association with the disposition effect measurement, while lower scores of Conscientiousness are expected to have a positive relationship.

Abstract:
The causes of this elevated rate are mostly result of human activities. The biodiversity crisis affects all scales and presents no political boundaries, the application of the theoretical and analytical framework of Conservation Biogeography and Systematic Conservation Planning becomes very useful to identify meaningful areas with high conservation value locally and globally. In addition to taxonomic diversity, functional and phylogenetic dimensions of biodiversity are also important components to preserve, and their loss implies not only on species number, but also loss of ecosystem services and evolutionary history. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate how impacts of human land use influences functional (related to extinction risk, Chapter 1) and phylogenetic (Chapter 2) distribution patterns, and how phylogenetic and trait information could be used to inform spatial conservation prioritization (Chapter 3). In the chapter 1 and 2 I found that the influence of land use on the biodiversity is not constrained to local and landscape scales, but has an effect at broad-scales too. Besides, I verified that land use impacts on phylogenetic and functional dimensions on macrogeographical scales. These results show a need of creating a broad scale planning for ocupation and management of areas intended to human activities. Current land use is a major threat to some lineages of amphibians (Chapter 1) and primates (Chapter 2), as for example Microhylidae and Atelidae respectively. That reinforces the need of phylogenetics approaches that identify which lineages are more exposed to human activities. We found low congruence between priority areas for maximize the conservation of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetics dimensions of biodiversity. The integration of the differnt componentes of diversity to conservation still is a chalenge. The mismatch of the conservation priorities across the different dimension highlights the necessity of an integrative approach to biodiversity conservation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This is an introductory text on the theory of modules over rings or, equivalently, over algebras, addressed to beginning graduate students. It stresses the importance of the categorical perspective and the use of homological tools. Modules are studied both from a classical point of view and a categorical one. For this purpose, rudiments of category theory, homological algebra and representations of quivers are introduced and applied in the study of module categories. After introducing such fundamental tools as the Hom functor and the tensor product comes the study of projective, injective and flat modules. The classical results, such as the classification of modules over principal ideal domains, the Jordan-Hölder, Wedderburn-Artin, and Morita theorems, are proven, as well as the Eilenberg-Watts theorems. Radicals (of modules, algebras and categories) are thoroughly studied. Homological invariants, such as the extension and torsion modules or the homological dimensions are introduced using derived functors and are applied in module theory. The book stresses the construction and analysis of examples.

Abstract:
Well being is a multidimensional phenomenon, that cannot be measured by a single descriptive indicator and that, it should be represented by multiple dimensions. It requires, to be measured by combination of different dimensions that can be considered together as components of the phenomenon. This combination can be obtained by applying methodologies knows as Composite Indicators (CIs). CIs are largely used to have a comprehensive view on a phenomenon that cannot be captured by a single indicator. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is one of the most popular multivariate statistical technique used for reducing data with many dimension, and often well being indicators are obtained using PCA. PCA is implicitly based on a reflective measurement model that it non suitable for all types of indicators. Mazziotta and Pareto (2013) in their paper discuss the use and misuse of PCA for measuring well-being. The classical PCA is not suitable for data collected on the territory because it does not take into account the spatial autocorrelation present in the data. The aim of this paper is to propose the use of Spatial Principal Component Analysis for measuring well being in the Italian Provinces.

AbstractRefugee governance has legislative, institutional, political, and discursive dimensions. These components co-constitute each other and reflect the fragments of strategic temporality as a building principal. It is possible to trace signs of strategic temporality in each dimension. This chapter starts with an overview of the legislative landscape marked by the Turkish asylum regime’s dual structure. Then, it maps the institutional architecture where relevant actors put these legislations into implementation. Both legislation and institutions play out in a highly political domestic and international context, which is scrutinised in the following section. The discursive dimension will be delved into further in Chap. 3.

Abstract:
AbstractThe chapter uses a scoping literature review of Finnish school research to make sense of the task and practice of principalship in the Finnish educational context. The data consists of 20 doctoral dissertations from Finnish universities, year 2000 to 2020, in which acting and former principals study various aspects of their own professional practice. The study aims of conceptualizing and comprehending principalship using a two-step process of analysis, with two intertwined analytical frameworks. As a result, principalship is firstly described as consisting of three intertwined practices: being a principal, doing principalship and contextualising principalship. In the second step of the analysis, a framework consisting of two basic dimensions for situating the research interests in the dissertation is constructed. The first dimension consists of school leadership understood as an individual undertaking or as a shared, social and cultural practice. The second dimension either locates principalship in its organisational, cultural and operational context or focus on professional ambitions for strategic development or change. In summary, principalship consists of tasks and duties, capacities and leadership styles, or can be constructed as a contextual social practice, for enhancing collaborative school development.

Abstract:
The evaluation of the principal dimensions of the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) system is one of the most critical tasks at the initial design stage of the vessel. It is therefore important to get this right from the onset. This paper presents a simple method of determining the optimal principal dimensions of FPSO vessels of any specified oil storage capacity. An interactive programme, the Principal Dimensions Programme (PDP) has therefore been designed to accurately evaluate them based on the required cubic number (L × B × D) and the needed oil storage capacity (as the modern segregated vessels are volume-limited). The prediction of these dimensions has been given to ensure a safe operation and optimal performance of the vessels with regards to their motion responses in deep sea waves.

Abstract:
Abstract An integrated optimization model of EEDI and minimum propulsion power has been established in this paper. EEDI optimization needs to meet IMO requirements for minimum propulsion power. Installed power reduction is one of the most effective way to optimize EEDI, but it will make the installed power lower than IMO requirements. From the view of security, it is not allowed. In order to coordinate the contradiction between the reduction of EEDI and the minimum propulsion power of the ship, this paper is devoted to the development of an effective and efficient EEDI optimization method under the minimum propulsion power constraints of the ship. The evaluation method of the objective function EEDI is a digital pattern of hydrodynamics performance for tanker series developed by the China Ship Science Research Center. In order to illustrate the method, the VLCC is selected as the research object, and Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms II is selected to optimize the EEDI. The calculation results show that energy efficiency has been optimized about 4%, so the EEDI and minimum propulsion power integrated optimization model are reasonable and effective.

Abstract:
Structural and biomechanical parameters of Edible Frog, Pelophylax esculentus (Linnaeus, 1758), limb bones, namely, mass, linear dimensions, parameters of the shaft ’s cross-sectional shape (cross-sectional area, moments of inertia, radiuses of inertia) were investigated. Some coeffi cients were also estimated: diameters ratio (df/ds), cross-sectional index (ik), principal moments of inertia ratio (Imax/Imin). Coeffi cients of variation of linear dimensions (11.9–20.0 %) and relative bone mass (22–35 %) were established. Moments of inertia of various bones are more variable (CV = 41.67–56.35 %) in relation to radii of inertia (CV = 9.68–14.67 %). Shaft ’s cross-sectional shape is invariable in all cases. However, there is high individual variability of structural and biomechanical parameters of P. esculentus limb bones. Variability of parameters was limited by the certain range. We suggest the presence of stable norm in bone structure. Stylopodium bones have the primary biomechanical function among the elements of limb skeleton, because their parameters most clearly responsiveto changes in body mass.

Full text
Abstract:
Four different classroom observation instruments—from the Service Delivery Indicators, the Stallings Observation System, the Classroom Assessment Scoring System, and the Teach classroom observation instrument—were implemented in about 100 schools across four regions of Tanzania. The research design is such that various combinations of tools were administered to various combinations of teachers, so these data can be used to explore the commonalities and differences in the behaviors and practices captured by each tool, the internal properties of the tools (for example, how stable they are across enumerators, or how various indicators relate to one another), and how variables collected by the various tools compare to each other. Analysis shows that inter-rater reliability can be low, especially for some of the subjective ratings; principal components analysis suggests that lower-level constructs do not map neatly to predetermined higher-level ones and suggest that the data have only a few dimensions. Measures collected during teacher observations are associated with student test scores, but patterns differ for teachers with lower versus higher subject content knowledge.

Abstract:

Duffy, Katie, Kelly De Bruin, Loïc Henry, Clement Kyei, Anne Nolan, and Brendan Walsh. Health impacts of climate change and mitigation policies in Ireland. ESRI, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.26504/rs188.

Full text
Abstract:
Recognition of the need to limit climate change has led countries to sign up to concerted efforts to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These efforts culminated in the ratification of the Paris Agreement by Ireland and 196 other countries in 2015. This agreement, and the subsequent Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act of 2021, commit Ireland to a GHG emissions reduction goal of at least 55 per cent compared to 1990 levels by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. These commitments to reduce GHG emissions through various Climate Action Plans will have considerable economic and societal ramifications, including on population health. For EU countries, the health implications of climate change are estimated to be extensive, while climate change may impede the sustainability of healthcare service provision. The changing climate, predicted to intensify, can exacerbate health impacts, especially in vulnerable demographic groups such as children, older people, and individuals with chronic diseases. However, in addition to the direct benefits for health from emission reductions (e.g., from fewer extreme weather events), emission reduction policies may also have co-benefits for health, e.g., the shift to more bicycle-based commuting through increased cycle lanes or the switch to lower meat consumption can help reduce emissions and improve health outcomes. Despite the growing evidence on the link between increasing temperatures, and likely emission reduction target policies, on health, little evidence exists on the health effects of climate change and associated mitigation actions in an Irish context. The aim of this report is to contribute to the understanding of the link between climate change and health by examining the impact of temperature changes on health and healthcare utilisation in Ireland. While there are multiple dimensions of climate change that may affect health (e.g., increasing temperature, increased precipitation, wildfires, etc.), temperature change is considered one of the principal health threats facing Ireland with respect to climate change. First the report undertakes an in-depth review of the literature on the link between temperature change and health, focusing on evidence from other regions with moderate climates that are similar to Ireland. It also provides an overview of the literature that has assessed the health benefits and co-benefits of climate change mitigation action. Second, the report utilises Met Éireann temperature data to develop Irish climate projections based on simulations performed by the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC). Next, the research examines the impact of increases in temperature on use of emergency in-patient hospital care in Ireland. Finally, the report also outlines some of the potential health benefits and co-benefits of climate change mitigation actions, in Ireland.

Full text
