Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to inform those who are supporting persons who are dying and are responsible for planning, commissioning or delivering palliative care about the need to support and maximise the decision-making ability and choices of persons with advanced dementia or severe frailty.Design/methodology/approachThis article will consider the legal and human rights principles applicable to Scotland, and indeed to other jurisdictions, which govern decisions about care and treatment of persons with and without capacity and the application of these principles to palliative care situations.FindingsIt is important that those involved in the care and support of the dying are fully aware of the need to support and maximise their decision-making ability concerning palliative care and treatment choices.Research limitations/implicationsIt is a well-established legal and human rights principle that the decisions of a person with capacity must be respected, including decisions about palliative care and treatment at the end of life. Moreover, recent developments in international human rights law reinforce the message that this principle applies equally to all. Applying this principle into persons with advanced dementia or severe frailty therefore requires skilled assessment and supported decision-making in order to optimise capacity and respect autonomy.Originality/valueThe discussion applies the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities approach concerning equality of rights enjoyment and supported decision-making to palliative care and treatment situations.

Abstract:
The aim: To demonstrate the limitations of pharmacological (chemical) therapy and the atomistic paradigm of science (in particular medicine) on the methodological basis of modern interdisciplinary directions (the theory of dissipative structures, chaos, autopoiesis), quantum mechanics, as well as the basic patterns of oriental medicine. Materials and methods: The principles used in the article include self-organization, emergence, quantum mechanics (the Heisenberg uncertainty principle), the principle of consistency; principles of using coherent millimeter waves of low power, etc. Theoretical methods of analysis and synthesis, idealization, abstraction, induction and deduction are also used. Сonclusions: The concept of “integrable system” is equivalent to the concept of “integral quantum-mechanical system”; Integral quantum-mechanical systems (nuclei, atoms, molecules, living objects) in the ground state are described by periodic wave functions of the type exp (jwt); The traditional paradigm, for the most part, eliminates the qualitative difference between living and dead matter; Any living system functioning as a whole is simultaneously a macroscopic quantum-mechanical object and a millimeter-wave laser.

Abstract:
The principles of the physical patterns of self-organization are numerous, different upon various levels of the scale of complexity (subatomic, molecular, geological, astrophysical). The integrated pattern of the changes going on in a living body indicates an integrated nature of its principle - whatever it might happen to be. Aristotle called this kind of principle „psycho", H . Driesch called it „entelecheia", sociobiolo- gists believe that D N A is the right name for it. The fundamental problem consists in seeing - not just deciding a priori - if the empirical data do require - in a living organism - a single, integrating agency. If such a requirement originates in an illusion, the whole problem is fictitious. If this requirement is well founded, then we must to search for such an agent.

Abstract:
For over a decade now, Latin America has played a leading role in renewing the critique of the notion of western development by ascribing constitutional status to the knowledge and practices of native peoples of the continent. Thus, the Good Living or Living Well (GL/LW) have become alternatives to development as they question the conception of only economic growth, by putting forward a balanced relationship with nature, and redefining exchange relationships on the basis of the reciprocity principle. Hence, in this work, we intend to analyze the constitutional reform processes of Ecuador and Bolivia based on GL/LW as critique to the proposal of the hegemonic notion of development. It is important to highlight the visibility acquired by these alternative ways of organizing community life against an economy of capital accumulation, which purports to be a globally closed and unique option (Álvarez, 2012). Now, after 10 years since the beginnings of these processes, can it be said that these reforms had a significant impact on our society? By virtue of these alternatives to the hegemonic model of production, new fields of research have opened up about the different forms of contradiction between capital-labor.

Abstract:
A time-honored principle in education is that changes in knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs are precursors to changes in actions or behaviors. Nevertheless, health promotion professionals occasionally hear the bromide that “people know what they’re supposed to do, they just don’t do it!” What does it mean to know something really well? And when is knowledge influential enough that it affects our very way of being? This editorial introduces a new section for the American Journal of Health Promotion called “Knowing Well, Being Well: Well-being born of understanding” (KWBW). Premiering in this issue of the journal, KWBW will be led by coeditors Drs Sara Johnson and David Katz, two of the most recognized and respected leaders in health promotion. Although today’s health promotion practitioners seem intent on moving “from wellness to well-being,” our discipline is in the nascent stages of reconciling theories of behavior change and pathways to well-being. “Knowing Well, Being Well” will chart a course to explore how knowledge, supportive environments, and purposeful living contribute to health, happiness, and life satisfaction.

Abstract:
AbstractAssistive Ambient Living (AAL) in ageing refers to any device used to support ageing related psychological and physical changes aimed at improving seniors’ quality of life and reducing caregivers’ burdens. The diffusion of these devices opens the ethical issues related to their use in the human personal space. This is particularly relevant when AAL technologies are devoted to the ageing population that exhibits special bio-psycho-social aspects and needs. In spite of this, relatively little research has focused on ethical issues that emerge from AAL technologies. The present article addresses ethical issues emerging when AAL technologies are implemented for assisting the elderly population and is aimed at raising awareness of these aspects among healthcare providers. The overall conclusion encourages a person-oriented approach when designing healthcare facilities. This process must be fulfilled in compliance with the general principles of ethics and individual nature of the person devoted to. This perspective will develop new research paradigms, paving the way for fulfilling essential ethical principles in the development of future generations of personalized AAL devices to support ageing people living independently at their home.

Abstract:
Constitutive motive represents a concept of organization of living space. It can appear in the form of element, area, space or principle, i.e. it can be material or intangible. Constitutive motives have always been present in space organization domain, in vernacular construction and architecture. Their importance and appearance have changed in time, as the systems of social values changed. The decision on the selection of constitutive motives in the conception of the housing unit structure primarily depends on the subjective view of the creator, but also on numerous other contextual factors. This paper aims to review and examine innovative interpretation of their constitutive role in modern architectural practice. The goal is to examine the most significant motives in organization of the living space, as well as to offer suggestions for their theoretical systematization.

Abstract:
The Independent Living Donor Advocate, who is required on the transplant team, advocates, promotes, and protects the interests of the donor. Previously described ethical challenges perceived by these advocates and the variability of their responses prompted further inquiry. Research Questions: How are ethical obligations perceived by ILDAs? What ethical principles do ILDAs identify as the basis of their decision making? What are the ethical challenges for ILDAs? Study Design: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was designed and administered via REDCap. Participants were recruited from the National Kidney Foundation Living Donor Advocate email list. Quantitative and qualitative data on their role, ethical decision making, and perceived ethical issues, by seriousness and frequency, were collected. Results: Thirty-four participants responded. Nonmaleficence was ranked as the primary ethical principle used in decision making. Participants rated obligations to protect higher than advocacy. Participants reported experiencing internal ethical conflict to protect over advocate for the donor. The most serious ethical challenge participants perceived for donors was their decisional capacity, followed by their emotional or psychological distress, which was also described as a frequent donor challenge experienced in their role. Discussion: The results of this survey validate previous descriptions that the advocate role is largely perceived as protective. Their independent nature as well as the inherent vulnerabilities of the potential living donor compels the continued mitigation of ethical challenges, to enhance advocacy and protection for the living donor.

Abstract:
This paper reviews the safety culture in handling radioactive sources. Safety culture refers to how safety is addressed and communicated in the workplace. It encompasses the attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and values of all employees in an organization in relation to safety. A good safety culture can be promoted by management through commitment to safety, realistic practices for handling hazards, continuous organizational learning and concern for hazards shared across the workforce. The radioactive substances used should comply with the following characteristics where radiotoxicity must be as low as possible, short-living isotopes are preferred than long-living ones and the amounts used must be kept to a minimum. Therefore, the ‘As Low As Reasonably Achievable’ (ALARA) principle was applied that based on the minimization of radiation doses and limiting the release of radioactive materials into the environment by employing all reasonable methods. Besides that, the ALARA principle is an integral part of all activities that involve the use of radiation or radioactive materials and can help prevent unnecessary exposure as well as overexposure. The three major ALARA principles to assist with maintaining doses are time, distance and shielding. It takes a whole team effort to successfully implement the ALARA in safety culture while doing routine element of working in handling radioactive materials.

Lennox, Thompson Bronwyn Fay. "Living well with chronic pain : a classical grounded theory." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Health Sciences, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10282.

Full text
Abstract:
Chronic pain is a public health problem that is likely to increase as the population ages, and has few effective treatments. Although viewed by many as profoundly distressing and disabling, there are a surprising number of people (approximately 30%) who cope well with their chronic pain and do not continue to seek treatment. There is little theory to explain how and why these individuals manage their pain well. This means there is limited knowledge about the approaches used by people who cope well and whether these strategies could help those who have more difficulty. This thesis presents a substantive grounded theory of living well with chronic pain, the theory of re-occupying self. Seventeen individual interviews were recorded, with data collection, analysis and theory generation following classical grounded theory methodological approach. Constant comparison, theoretical sampling, theoretical coding, and theoretical sensitivity were used to identify the main concern of people who cope well with pain. This concern is achieving self-coherence, and is resolved by re-occupying self. Resolution involves making sense to develop an idiographic model of their pain; deciding to turn from patient to person, facilitated or hindered by interactions with clinicians and occupational drive; and flexibly persisting where occupational engaging and coping allow individuals to develop future plans. By completing this process, individuals form a coherent self-concept in which they re-occupy the important or valued aspects of themselves. This study supports using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy because of its functional contextual view of people and their actions. This study illustrates that coping strategies are used in different ways depending on the primary goal within that context. Occupations, or active; purposeful; meaningful; contextualised and human activities, are used by people to make sense of their situation, and as a key motivation for developing coping strategies. These findings lead to new research questions about values-aligned activity, coping with identity change, and acceptance.

Andrews, Rhys William. "Perfectionist liberalism and living well : character, politics and education." Thesis, Swansea University, 2005. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42948.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to show that a liberal character-ethics lies at the heart of perfectionist liberal aspirations for individual flourishing. In the past, liberal conceptions of the good life were tied to metaphysical conceptions of the self. However, the diversity of contemporary liberal societies leads liberals to seek new conceptual resources to underpin their normative theories. This thesis decontests a perfectionist liberal doctrine which highlights liberal ethical ideals associated with a malleable conception of the self can be most attractively conceptualised by reviving the currently neglected concept of character. For agents in liberal societies to live well they should possess a certain sort of character. The liberal concept of character defended here has two aspects: moral and individual. These two aspects together provide normative content and criteria for a liberal character-ethics which can be promoted by the liberal state (and throughout civil society). In particular, a liberal doctrine based on the dual concept of character can guide an education for significant autonomy that nurtures the ability of children to live well in later life. Such an education would pay especially close attention to encouraging virtues associated with responsible political engagement, as these are fundamental to significant autonomy in a liberal democracy. The philosophical presuppositions of promoting liberal virtues can then be edifyingly viewed at a meta-theoretical level in quasi-Foucauldian terms as the inculcation of 'technologies of the self'. The final chapter uses the perfectionist liberal doctrine defended in Chapters Four and Five to assess the normative cogency of political education in English secondary schools, reflecting on the current politics and philosophy of education and citizenship in the UK. The thesis then concludes by highlighting that liberal aspirations for character, politics and education must be openly and confidently explicated if they are to shape the processes of 'govemmentality' in liberal democracies.

Niker, Fay. "Living well by design : an account of permissible public nudging." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2017. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/95047/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis provides a full assessment of the moral permissibility of a set of new belief and behaviour modification techniques, now commonly known as “nudges”, which are grounded in and justified by reference to our new insights into human psychology. It asks what forms of nudging are permissible in light of the state’s new understanding of its capacity to modify behaviour using these insights; and it develops an ethico-political account of living well that directs this normative investigation. There are two main strands to this analysis of public nudging, one relating to behaviour change policies designed for the sake of the target and the other relating to those designed for the sake of others. Across both strands, it is argued that the kinds of interventions that are permissible share a similar character: specifically, they are compatible with creating and sustaining the conditions for living well, on account of their playing an ecological-educative role in supporting citizens’ personal autonomy and practical reasoning. The thesis uses its in-depth normative analysis as the basis for engaging with current practices in behavioural policymaking and for setting out an ethically-sensitive policy framework to guide the design of nudge interventions in practice. The extended argument presented in these pages offers a distinctive and timely contribution to this debate, setting out arguably the most sustained and complete philosophical assessment of the ethics of nudging in the literature to date.

Phillips, Elizabeth. "Living Well: Mutual Vulnerability and the Virtue of Proper Interconnection." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/595995.

Full text
Abstract:
Most philosophical work on ethical questions concerning disability and impairment, human vulnerability and the cycles of life is found within feminist care ethics and the philosophy of disability. When it comes to eudaimonist virtue ethics, a discussion of such truths about our human condition usually falls within an account of external goods. Alasdair Macintyre's work is the most notable exception. In his book, Dependent Rational Animals, Macintyre argues that the cultivation of the virtues of acknowledged dependence is necessary for living a eudaimon life. Rather than focus, as Macintyre and some care ethicists do, on our often contingent dependence, I argue that it is a right orientation toward our interdependence which allows us to live with the vulnerabilities inherent in the human condition and live well. To that end, I put forward a hitherto unspecified virtue which I call Proper Interconnection and argue for its necessary role in sustaining human flourishing in an interdependent world. I establish that Proper Interconnection is a legitimate virtue in its own right by demonstrating that it meets the conditions which Rosalind Hursthouse in "Environmental Virtue Ethics," and Macintyre in After Virtue specify must be met in order for a trait to qualify as a virtue. In accordance with Hursthouse's conditions, I show that Proper Interconnection is a deep-seated disposition of character comprised of four cognitive and emotional components: recognition, compassion, acceptance and shared responsibility. Proper Interconnection is integral to the acquisition of practical wisdom, can be inculcated in children and plausibly fits within an account of human nature. Turning to Macintyre's conditions, I provide several examples from anthropology which I argue suggest that Proper Interconnection is both central to and helps sustain particular practices and traditions—such as the practice of hospitality and traditions of kinship. Macintyre argues that, just as the virtues help sustain practices and traditions, they also enable us to flourish by sustaining the integrity of our character and, by extension, our life narratives. We are both the authors of our lives and inextricably interconnected with those whose life narratives intertwine with our own. As our individual flourishing cannot exist apart from the flourishing of the whole, we cannot live an integrated life narrative by engaging in just any form of interconnection. We need to cultivate the virtue of Proper Interconnection, as we search and strive for both our own good and the good of humankind.

Full text
Abstract:
It is generally accepted that there is social alienation towards the elderly in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong society, the poor elderly are stereotyped as being a group of weak, handicapped, and lonely people. Often they are regarded as outdated and unable to adapt to rapid changes in society. The virtue of respecting elderly is facing challenges because of rapid social changes. Recently, the government has proposed the elderly move to China to grow old. “Aging in Place” has become harder to archive nowadays and it is common for Hong Kong families to commit their elderly family members to nursing homes away from society due to the changing family structure. People admit that there are challenges and obstacles of letting elders “age in place”. Urban development, social gentrification, poverty and the decline of traditional cultural values have posed a considerable threat to the idea of “aging in place” in Hong Kong. Currently, in order to administrate with higher degree of convenience and effectiveness, nursing homes are often too “institutionalized” and lack relaxing and intimate environments. This thesis is attempting to re-code this planning strategy for an aging population and develop a new precedent of living for the elderly in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, it is attempting to make a rectification on present elderly home and retirement housing settings and to investigate the real needs of elders.

Roberts, Marc Warren. "Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari : ontology and the question of living well." Thesis, Staffordshire University, 2010. http://eprints.staffs.ac.uk/1868/.

Full text
Abstract:
This aim of this study is to investigate the manner in which Deleuze’s individual and collaborative work can be productively understood as being concerned with the question of living well, where it will be suggested that living well necessitates that we not only become aware of, but that we also explore, the forever renewed present possibilities for living otherwise that each moment brings. In particular, this study will make an original contribution to existing Deleuzian studies by arguing that what legitimises this conception of living well, and what can motivate us to engage in such a practice, is that a life that becomes aware of and explores the open field of present possibilities for living otherwise that each moment engenders is a life that reflects, or that is lived in accordance with, the challenging ontological account that can be discerned throughout Deleuze’s individual and collaborative work; a life lived in accordance with his open, dynamic and thoroughly temporal theory of Being or what I will suggest he came to refer to simply as ‘Life’. In addition, I will argue that in so far as each individual human being is to be understood as an ongoing and immanent expression of Life, an immediate expression of Life understood as a universal, impersonal and pre-individual dynamism, then a life that strives to explore the forever renewed present possibilities for living otherwise that each moment brings - a practice that I shall propose also necessitates that each individual strives to resist the diverse ways in which their present possibilities are continually hindered, thwarted and negated - is not only a life that strives to live in accordance with the temporal dynamism of Life, but is also a life lived in accordance with our own dynamic and thoroughly temporal being.

Muhamad-Sarih, Norazilawati. "Synthesis of well-defined multi-end functionalized polymers via living anionic polymerization." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/497/.

Full text
Abstract:
Numerous applications require specific properties at polymer surfaces that differ from the bulk, while retaining the advantageous properties of the bulk polymer. In this thesis, we describe work aimed at producing a series of multi-end functionalized polystyrene and polyisoprene additives with a wide range of molecular weights, carrying 1 to 3 fluoroalkyl groups that have been prepared by end capping the living chain ends of polymers prepared via anionic polymerization reactions. The resulting polymers have a well-defined structure with interesting surface modifying properties. We have also carried out hydrogenation of end functionalized polyisoprene to form poly(ethylene-alt-propylene) with the same functional group. The resulting polymers have been used as additives in an attempt to render the surface of polymer films hydrophobic/lipophobic and we have characterized these polymer films using static contact angle measurements with water as the main contact fluid. We have systematically studied the effect of additive molecular weight, concentration and annealing conditions on the surface properties. It has been discovered that these additives undergo rapid adsorption to a surface or interface and significantly enhance surface properties. In addition, to support the contact angles results, elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) and Rutherford backscattering analysis (RBS) have been carried out to acquire further quantitative evidence of surface segregation.

Abstract:
Occurrence of mineral forming and other bacteria in mats is well demonstrated. However, their high diversity shown by ribotyping was not explained, although it could explain the diversity of formed minerals. Common biomarkers as well as phylogenic relationships are useful tools to clustering the isolates and predict their potential role in the natural niche. In this study, combination of MALDI-TOF MS with PCA was shown a powerful tool to categorize 35 mineral forming bacterial strains isolated from Dohat Fshaikh sabkha, at northwest of Qatar (23 from decaying mats and 12 from living ones). 23 strains from decaying mats belong to Virgibacillus genus as identified by ribotyping and are shown highly involved in formation of protodolomite and a diversity of minerals. They were used as internal references in categorization of sabkha bacteria. Combination of isolation of bacteria on selective mineral forming media, their MALDI TOF MS protein profiling and PCA analysis established their relationship in a phyloproteomic based on protein biomarkers including m/z 4905, 3265, 5240, 6430, 7765, and 9815. PCA analysis clustered the studied strains into 3 major clusters, showing strong correspondence to the 3 phyloproteiomic groups that were established by the dendrogram. Both clustering analysis means have evidently demonstrated a relationship between known Virgibacillus strains and other related bacteria based on profiling of their synthesized proteins. Thus, larger populations of bacteria in mats can be easily screened for their potential to exhibit certain activities, which is of ecological, environmental and biotechnological significance.

Abstract:
Environmental monitoring has gained significant importance in outdoor air quality measurement and assessment for fundamental survival as well as ambient assisted living. In real-time outdoor urban scale, instantaneous air quality index estimation, the electrochemical sensors warm-up time, cross-sensitivity computation-error, geo-location typography, instantaneous capacity or back up time; and energy efficiency are the six major challenges. These challenges lead to real-time gradient anomalies that effect the accuracy and pro-longed lags in air quality index mapping campaigns for state and environmental/meteorological agencies. In this work, a gradient-aware, multi-variable air quality-sensing node is proposed with event-triggered sensing based on position, gas magnitudes, and cross-sensitivity interpolation. In this approach, temperature, humidity, pressure, geo-position, photovoltaic power, volatile organic compounds, particulate matter (2.5), ozone, Carbon mono-oxide, Nitrogen dioxide, and Sulphur dioxide are the principle variables. Results have shown that the proposed system optimized the real-time air quality monitoring for the chosen geo-spatial cluster (Qatar University).

"Propensity for Hip Dislocation in Gait Loading Versus Sit-to-Stand Maneuvers: Implications for Surgical Management of Acetabular Fractures." In ASME 2010 Summer Bioengineering Conference. Full text
Abstract:
Acetabular fractures present a clinical challenge due to the complicated anatomy and difficulty of exposure, reduction, and fixation. There are several indications for surgery including any fracture which is displaced more than 2mm, failure to maintain reduction by closed means, or, for transverse fractures, a roof-arc angle less than 45 degrees (1,2). The last indication was determined by a cadaver model that only evaluated hip stability in the single leg stance phase of the gait cycle (3). Kinesiological models have well established that the magnitude and direction of the joint contact force can deviate substantially from the mechanics of gait loading, particularly for such activities of daily living as sit-to-stand maneuvers and climbing stairs (4,5). Thus, the criteria for fracture stability established using gait-only loading conditions may be inadequate for other activities of daily living. Basic engineering principles would dictate that the most conservative estimate of dislocation potential be used in managing these cases clinically; and it is therefore important to re-evaluate fracture management criteria in alternative loading conditions that have a high potential for dislocation.

Abstract:
Urban functions are no longer separated spatially or socially, and the contest between diverse land-uses is reaching a peak due to growing populations and increasing urbanization that inflates the pressure on already strained resources within the urban fabric. The trend of depletion of green spaces is an increasing global phenomenon, intensifying the growing carbon footprint, impairing water quality and compromising health and overall quality of life, ultimately leading to cities that are far removed from the safe, clean, and livable environments, as envisioned in planning theory. Green spaces are often viewed as a “luxury good”, despite the comprehensive literature on the extensive benefits of such spaces to their host cities and communities. Misconceptions relating to the notion of green spaces are reflected in the undervaluation of these spaces, under-prioritization in the budgeting process and ultimate negligence in terms of broader spatial planning approaches. The lack of function and ownership further exacerbate the social- and economic value of these green spaces, especially within the South African context, apparent by the disproval of the compensation hypothesis and rejection of the proximity principle. Much effort will be needed to change perceptions and sensitize decision-makers to understand green spaces as a “public good” and “economic asset”. Resilience thinking could pose solutions in this regard, drawing on transdisciplinary planning approaches to manage change and steer Spatial Planning towards the era of transurbanism. It would however, require the emancipation of the disciplinary identity of Spatial Planning as crucial driver towards resilience, departing from theoretical and methodological frames of supplementary disciplines, as well as the indigenous knowledge and living experiences of communities, to co-produce urban innovations. Conveying strategic and lateral thinking, contemporary Planners would need to become generative leaders, with socio-emotional intelligence, to generate innovation and co-create solutions for strained social contexts, for depleting scare resources, for managing change of contemporary urban landscapes.

Abstract:
Abstract Natural nanomechanisms such as capillaries, neurotransmitters, and ion channels play a vital role in the living systems. But the design principles developed by nature through evolution are not well understood and, hence, not applicable to engineered nanomachines. Thus, the design of nanoscale mechanisms with prescribed functions remains a challenge. Here, we present a systematic approach based on established kinematics techniques to designing, analyzing, and controlling manufacturable nanomachines with prescribed mobility and function built from a finite but extendable number of available “molecular primitives.” Our framework allows the systematic exploration of the design space of irreducibly simple nanomachines, built with prescribed motion specification by combining available nanocomponents into systems having constrained, and consequently controllable motions. We show that the proposed framework has allowed us to discover and verify a molecule in the form of a seven link, seven revolute (7R) close loop spatial linkage with mobility (degree of freedom) of one. Furthermore, our experiments exhibit the type and range of motion predicted by our simulations. Enhancing such a structure into functional nanomechanisms by exploiting and controlling their motions individually or as part of an ensemble could galvanize development of the multitude of engineering, scientific, medical, and consumer applications that can benefit from engineered nanomachines.

Abstract:
Environmentally Sustainable Design is in accordance with the concept of sustainability to design objects and built environment achieving a balance that causes no overall net environmental burden. At a time when global warming is proceeding at a rate, unprecedented in the past 1,300 years, we not only need to switch to greener energy sources and reduce consumption on the whole, but also make provision for the victims of future calamities that are inevitable due to irreversible environmental damage. This paper talks about creating an ecological balance in natural and manmade ecosystems. The need for Environmentally Sustainable Energy as well as the concept and its principles has been explained. A case study was taken up on the LILYPAD Project by architect Vincent Callebaut to showcase an excellent example of an environmentally sustainable design concept for future climatic refugees. The prototype is termed as an “auto sufficient amphibious city” and takes up the challenges launched by the OECD namely climate, biodiversity, water and health. The research also states how we can incorporate the idea of living symbiotically with nature in the construction of future homes with the implementation of one such concept i.e. Passivhaus standards. This paper aims to create awareness about environmental responsibility and how the use of environmentally sustainable design can help us realize this practically. All structures must be constructed with the aim of making them as energy efficient as possible by implementing the Passivhaus Principles and many such standards that can reduce our energy consumption and emission.

Abstract:
Contemporary society and modern living in urban areas strive for more sustainable environments, respecting the past, history and their remains. Intangible and tangible cultural heritage has become an important urban resource for city promotion as well as a trigger for economic and social city development. Built heritage, as part of cultural heritage, consists of various buildings from different epochs. Sustainable principles developed within the concept of smart, environmentally-friendly, and responsive cities requires energy optimization while minimizing energy amounts needed for systems of heating and cooling in buildings. Energy rehabilitation seems to become a strategically necessary and legally obligatory task in Serbia too. It means the implementation of various measures in term of the use of renewable energy resources and improvement of the thermal envelope of the already existing facilities. However, this type of interventions often reflects on the visual appearance of the building, changing its form, façade articulation and materialization. Respecting legally prescribed allowance, according to the degree of regime protection of cultural built heritage, the paper goal is to develop a model for the protection of the buildings in term of improvement of their energetic performances. The research aim is to identify the most optimal measures to be applied to increase energy efficiency depending on building's degree of protection, in Serbia, using multi-criteria decision-making methodology.

Abstract:
The results of empirical studies focusing on gender differences in subjective wellbeing based on either national or comparative international data are inconclusive. In Turkey, where levels of gender inequality are high, women tend to report higher levels of life satisfaction than men. This study investigates the relationship between factors related to women’s empowerment and life satisfaction for both ever-married and never-married women using the 2018 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS), which collected data on life satisfaction for the first time in a TDHS series. The results show that in addition to their material resources and living environment, factors related to women’s agency – i.e., education and participation in decisionmaking – are associated with women’s levels of life satisfaction.

Abstract:
Blowing snow accounts for a large part of Illinois Department of Transportation’s total winter maintenance expenditures. This project aims to develop recommendations on the design and placement of living snow fences (LSFs) to minimize snowdrift on Illinois highways. The research team examined historical IDOT data for resource expenditures, conducted a literature review and survey of northern agencies, developed and validated a numerical model, field tested selected LSFs, and used a model to assist LSF design. Field testing revealed that the proper snow fence setback distance should consider the local prevailing winter weather conditions, and snow fences within the right-of-way could still be beneficial to agencies. A series of numerical simulations of flow around porous fences were performed using Flow-3D, a computational fluid dynamics software. The results of the simulations of the validated model were employed to develop design guidelines for siting LSFs on flat terrain and for those with mild slopes (< 15° from horizontal). Guidance is provided for determining fence setback, wind characteristics, fence orientation, as well as fence height and porosity. Fences comprised of multiple rows are also addressed. For sites with embankments with steeper slopes, guidelines are provided that include a fence at the base and one or more fence on the embankment. The design procedure can use the available right-of-way at a site to determine the appropriate fence characteristics (e.g., height and porosity) to prevent snow deposition on the road. The procedure developed in this work provides an alternative that uses available setback to design the fence. This approach does not consider snow transport over an entire season and may be less effective in years with several large snowfall events, very large single events, or a sequence of small events with little snowmelt in between. However, this procedure is expected to be effective for more frequent snowfall events such as those that occurred over the field-monitoring period. Recommendations were made to facilitate the implementation of research results by IDOT. The recommendations include a proposed process flow for establishing LSFs for Illinois highways, LSF siting and design guidelines (along with a list of suitable plant species for LSFs), as well as other implementation considerations and identified research needs.

Abstract:
Public expenditures on non-contributory pensions are equivalent to at least 1 percent of GDP in several countries in Latin America and is expected to increase. We explore the effect of non-contributory pensions on the well-being of the beneficiary population by studying the "Pensiones Alimentarias" program established by law in Paraguay, which targets older adults living in poverty. Households with a beneficiary increased their level of consumption by 44 percent. The program improved subjective well-being in 0.48 standard deviations. These effects are consistent with the findings of Bando, Galiani and Gertler (2020) and Galiani, Gertler and Bando (2016) in their studies on the non-contributory pension schemes in Peru and Mexico. Thus, we conclude that the effects of non-contributory pensions on well-being in Paraguay are comparable to those found for Peru and Mexico and add to the construction of external validity.

Abstract:
More people than ever are living in cities, and in these cities, more and more people are living alone. Using the example of Vienna, this paper investigates the subjective well-being of single households in the city. Previous research has identified positive and negative aspects of living alone (e.g., increased freedom vs. missing social embeddedness). We compare single households with other household types using data from the Viennese Quality of Life Survey (1995–2018). In our analysis, we consider overall life satisfaction as well as selected dimensions of subjective wellbeing (i.e., housing, financial situation, main activity, family, social contacts, leisure time). Our findings show that the subjective well-being of single households in Vienna is high and quite stable over time. While single households are found to have lower life satisfaction than two-adult households, this result is mainly explained by singles reporting lower satisfaction with family life. Compared to households with children, singles are more satisfied with their financial situation, leisure time and housing, which helps to offset the negative consequences of missing family ties (in particular with regard to single parents).

Abstract:
Canadians living in rural communities are diverse, with individual communities defined by unique strengths and challenges that impact their health needs. Understanding rural health needs is a complex undertaking, with many challenges pertaining to engagement, research, and policy development. In order to address these challenges, it is imperative to understand the unique characteristics of rural communities as well as to ensure that the voices of rural and remote communities are prioritized in the development and implementation of rural health research programs and policy. Effective community engagement is essential in order to establish rural-normative programs and policies to improve the health of individuals living in rural, remote, and northern communities. This report was informed by a community engagement workshop held in Golden Lake, Ontario in October 2019. Workshop attendees were comprised of residents from communities within the Madawaska Valley, community health care professionals, students and researchers from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, and international researchers from Australia, Sweden, and Austria. The themes identified throughout the workshop included community strengths and initiatives that are working well, challenges and concerns faced by the community in the context of health, and suggestions to build on strengths and address challenges to improve the health of residents in the Madawaska Valley.

Abstract:
The article considers relativism as a philosophical principle and the moral standpoint of a journalist. In particular, the main argumentation of Roberto de Mattei’s work «Dictatorship of Relativism» is analyzed. Like Ratzinger, the Italian publicist describes modern life as ruled by a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of satisfying «the desires of one’s own ego». In his view, the boundaries of the main conflict of modernity lie between two visions of the world: one that believes in the existence of immutable, absolute values, and one that argues that there is nothing stable, that everything is conditional, time-dependent and can be discussed in the media. The markers of this conflict are our attitude to the famous statement of Protagoras about «man as a measure of all things: of the things that are, that they are, of the things that are not, that they are not», as well as to the non-debatable values, the status of natural and positive law, the worldview neutrality, the dehierarchization and multiplicity of truths, the equalization of all worldviews and axiological standpoint in foreign and Ukrainian media. A special attention in the article is paid to the ideological program of media-relativism, as well as to the postmodern and post-communist contexts of the issue of the penetration of relativism into the journalistic values.

Abstract:
This report seeks to use COVID-19 and its attendant lockdowns in India as a crucial moment to assess social protection. Policy and scholarship both recognize that social protection plays an important role in alleviating poverty, improving standards of living, mitigating risks and shocks, and reducing episodes of financial adversities (Conway & Norton, 2002). We understandsocial protection as “all public and privateinitiatives that provide income or consumption transfers to the poor, protect the vulnerable against livelihood risks and enhance the social status and rights of the marginalized; with the overall objective of reducing the economic and social vulnerability of poor, vulnerable and marginalized groups” (Devereux & Sabates-Wheeler, 2004). Social protection thus includes measures that are protective against destitution— both amidst crisis as well as in the everyday— as well as promotive in how they enable individuals, households and communities to thrive and flourish rather than just survive (Devereux & Sabates-Wheeler, 2004).

Idris, Iffat. LGBT Rights and Inclusion in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Institute of Development Studies (IDS), February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.067.

Abstract:
This review looks at the extent to which LGBT rights are provided for under law in a range of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and the record on implementation/enforcement, as well as approaches to promote LGBT rights and inclusion. SIDS covered are those in the Caribbean, Pacific, and Atlantic-Indian Ocean-South China Sea (AIS) regions. The review draws on a mixture of grey literature (largely from international development agencies/NGOs), academic literature, and media reports. While the information on the legal situation of LGBT people in SIDS was readily available, there was far less evidence on approaches/programmes to promote LGBT rights/inclusion in these countries. However, the review did find a number of reports with recommendations for international development cooperation generally on LGBT issues. Denial of LGBT rights and discrimination against LGBT people is found to varying extents in all parts of the world. It is important that LGBT people have protection in law, in particular the right to have same-sex sexual relations; protection from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation; and the right to gender identity/expression. Such rights are also provided for under international human rights conventions such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, while the Sustainable Development Goals are based on the principle of ‘leave no one behind'.
