Abstract:
Tolerance is one of the important values of the French education system that is brought up at school. Transferring values is the mission of the school along with the transfer of knowledge and skills. The need for fostering tolerance in French school students is driven by the current political and socio-economic situation in France. The rise in manifestations of intolerance, violence, xenophobia, racism in society has led the state to take active steps in public education, in particular, to introduce such a compulsory subject as moral and civic education. The purpose of the article is to highlight the experience of fostering tolerance in French secondary schools in the context of the school subject of "moral and civic education". The process of education of tolerance through the prism of moral and civic education is considered in the article. By analyzing the content of the curriculum, as well as methods such as synthesis, generalization, systematization, structural method, the basic approaches to the education of tolerance, the corresponding principles of moral and civic education, as well as the components by which the introduction of tolerance to the students of French schools are highlighted. Educating tolerance in French secondary schools is a systematic, ongoing process organized at the state level. It is implemented, inter alia, through the teaching of the compulsory subject of "moral and civic education", which covers all students from elementary to high school. Education of tolerance is carried out in accordance with the principles of moral and civic education (principle of autonomy, principle of discipline, principle of coexistence, principle of community) and is based on the values of the French Republic. According to the principles of moral and civic education, the following approaches to the cultivation of tolerance have been identified: sensitive, normative, cognitive and practical. Each of these approaches has different components, such as sensitivity, judgment, law and rule, obligation and responsibility. They find their practice in the subject of "moral and civic education".

Abstract:
Before 12.12.2018 in the official UN documents, the English-language concept of "tolerance" always corresponded to the Russian-language concept of «forbearance». Both these concepts were used to denote the optimal principle of relationships between people with different immanent features (hereinafter – "the optimal principle of relationships"). However, starting with 12.12.2018, the English-language concept of "tolerance" corresponds not only to the concept of «forbearance» in the Russian-language UN documents, but also to the concept of «tolerance» proper. The existence of such dualism creates difficulties in interpreting the provisions of the Russian Constitution on human rights and other laws. Therefore, it became necessary to understand which of the two concepts is more consistent with the content of the "optimal principle of relations". The study examined scientific sources, more than two thousand documents in the official languages of the UN, and examined the relationship between the concepts of "tolerance": "forbearance" and "tolerance" proper in official documents. Conclusions were made that it is not possible to definitely establish from documents in Russian which of the concepts is more consistent with the content of the "optimal principle of relationships"; from the content of the UN documents in all languages, as well as scientific papers, it follows that semantically this principle corresponds to the concept of «tolerance». The full description of the principle is presented in the document "Declaration of the Principles of Tolerance"; this allows the content of the declaration to be used in interpreting article 2 and other provisions of the Constitution.

The logical empiricists often appear as a foil for feminist theories. Their emphasis on the individualistic nature of knowledge and on the value-neutrality of science seems directly opposed to most feminist concerns. However, several recent works have highlighted aspects of Carnap's views that make him seem like much less of a straightforwardly positivist thinker. Certain of these aspects lend themselves to feminist concerns much more than the stereotypical picture would imply.

Abstract:
This monograph challenges the notion that Islam is, at its core, an intolerantreligion. Through a careful reading of the Qur’an, the Hadith literature, andextra-canonical texts, as well as examples from history, Reza Shah-Kazemiargues that Islam is rooted in an inclusivist ethic that permeates the founda-tions of Islamic belief and practice. He provides numerous examples of howMuslims have behaved in accordance with the Islamic values of unity(tawḥīd), mercy (raḥmān), and compassion (raḥmah) elucidated in theQur’an and the Hadith, and illustrated in history from the early Islamic periodto recent centuries. This volume provides an academic and sophisticated readingof tolerance in Muslim history that is accessible to the scholar, student, and layperson interested in how Islam deals with religious minorities. The introduction begins with the proposal that Islam is, at its foundation, committed to the principle of religious pluralism. Backed by eminent thinkers, including Wilfred Cantwell Smith (d. 2000) and John Locke (d. 1704), Shah-Kazemi describes this principle in terms of the “inalienable dignity” of allhuman beings as cited in Q. 30:30 and Q. 17:70: “We have bestowed dignityon the progeny of Adam [and Eve]” (p. 12). Examples of this principle are seenin the behavior of the Prophet as well as in that of his cousin and son-in-lawAli ibn Abi Talib, individuals who, in the author’s perspective, communicatedthe rule of compassion (raḥmah) throughout their lives. At the conclusion ofthis chapter, the author suggests that this practice be revived, for it accords withwestern secular principles that are not “an expression of its own specificallyreligious traditions,” but rather a result of the intra-religious wars that accompaniedthe Reformation. Shah-Kazemi uses the rest of this volume to elucidatethis spirit, which is best expressed in Q. 49:13: “O humanity, We have createdyou male and female, and We have made you into tribes and nations in orderthat you might come to know one another” (p. 19) ...

Tolerance allocation influences product performance especially for miniature precise assembly device. The purpose of this paper is to explore an approach to optimize manufacturing tolerances by combining the reliability of product performance indicators under actual working condition. The paper describes the principle and ways of tolerance handling in the finite element control equations for the displacement and stress, and then introduces the implementation of Monte-Carlo Finite Element Analysis method. We illustrate this method on a gear-tooth of port-cleaning-equipment gear pump and carry out the reliability analysis on gear contact fatigue strength considering the effect of manufacturing tolerance, and a sensitivity analysis is also performed to identify the key tolerances and improve them in order to attain the expected reliability.

Abstract:
AbstractLanguage acquisition is a well-established avenue for language change (Labov, 2007). Given the theoretical importance of language acquisition to language change, it is all the more important to formulate clear theories of transmission-based change. In this paper, we provide a simulation method designed to test the plausibility of different possible transmission-based changes, using the Tolerance Principle (Yang, 2016) to determine precise points at which different possible changes may become plausible for children acquiring language. We apply this method to a case study of a complex change currently in progress: the allophonic restructuring of /æ/ in Philadelphia English. Using this model, we are able to evaluate several competing explanations of the ongoing change and determine that the allophonic restructuring of /æ/ in Philadelphia English is mostly likely the result of children acquiring language from mixed dialect input, consisting of approximately 40% input from speakers with a nasal /æ/ split. We show that applying our simulation to a phonological change allows us to make precise quantitative predications about the progress of this change. Moreover, it forces us to reassess intuitively plausible hypotheses about language change, such as grammatical simplification, in a quantitative and independently motivated framework of acquisition.

LED die bonder is a high precision packaging machine and needs proper tolerance design to ensure its high performance requirements and low manufacturing costs. The related tolerance design methods, such as worst-case method and statistical method, mainly focus on two-dimensional cases in tolerance design. However, tolerance design for LED die bonder needs to deal with three-dimensional cases. To solve the problem, a new method for tolerance design based on Multi-body systems is presented. According to the motion characteristics of the related assembly component parts of LED die bonder, the motion equations in ideal and actual situation for die bonding are given respectively which use the principle of Multi-body systems and the homogeneous transform matrix. By solving the motion equation, we can obtain the tolerances of the related assembly component parts.

Abstract:
This essay presents two types of tolerance: passive tolerance and active or authentic tolerance. Passive tolerance is vertical and is illustrated in the attitude of one being forced by a pluralist societal situation to allow others to exist. Here tolerance is a gift from the powerful majority but can be taken away at any time if minorities infringe a number of conditions. Active or authentic tolerance accepts the right to existence, freedom and the wish of others to develop precisely as others. This principle of tolerance is in accord with the situation of contemporary democratic societies that are plural and which are characterized by potential conflict due to differing concepts of the good life. This essay illustrates how the concept of authentic tolerance is an appropriate model for a post-secular society marked by an increasingly public function by religion. Keywords: Passive tolerance, active tolerance, secularization, postsecularism, public reason, religion --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tulisan ini memperkenalkan dua jenis toleransi yakni toleransi pasif dan toleransi aktif atau autentik. Kata-kata kunci: Toleransi pasif, toleransi aktif, sekularisasi, postsekularisme, nalar publik, agama

The article studies the compliance of democracy of the Baltic States with the principle of tolerance. The study demonstrated specific social phobias (xenophobia, migrant phobia, homophobia, islamophobia, romaphobia, etc.), hate speech and other destructive trends in the Baltic countries that contradict values of liberal democracy. The authors argue that Baltic States face similar challenges of strengthening the principle of tolerance as well as how they differ in intolerance manifestations and mechanisms of their prevention and counteraction. In the Baltic States, issues related to promotion of tolerance are claimed to be common at two levels: at the institutional level (countries do not fulfil some of the EU guidelines aimed at enhancing the principle of tolerance); at the value level (population does not accept completely liberal-democratic values that the EU advocates).

Abstract:
A fundamental problem in immunology is that of understanding how the immune system selects promptly which cells to kill without harming the body. This problem poses an apparent paradox. Strong reactivity against pathogens seems incompatible with perfect tolerance towards self. We propose a different view on cellular reactivity to overcome this paradox: effector functions should be seen as the outcome of cellular decisions which can be in conflict with other cells' decisions. We argue that if cellular systems are frustrated, then extensive cross-reactivity among the elements in the system can decrease the reactivity of the system as a whole and induce perfect tolerance. Using numerical and mathematical analyses, we discuss two simple models that perform optimal pathogenic detection with no autoimmunity if cells are maximally frustrated. This study strongly suggests that a principle of maximal frustration could be used to build artificial immune systems. It would be interesting to test this principle in the real adaptive immune system.

Abstract:
Indonesia is a biggest Muslim, and yet multi-cultural, country. Religious tolerance is a key issue for harmony, and correct understanding of this principle is highly important. Maqāṣid approach serves one of the alternatives for such understanding. This study aims to elucidate the concept of interfaith tolerance from the perspective of the maqāṣid offered by Ibn ʿĀshūr‘s interpretation and analyze its relevance to the context of Indonesian diversity. This study is based on his work al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr and finds several important principles of interreligious tolerance from the perspective of the Qur’an. As a Muslim reformer, Ibn ʿĀshūr sees that tolerance is one crucial issue that religious followers are now facing. Grounded on the maqāṣid approach, he finds several principles of interreligious relation from the Quranic verses. These principles fit to the highest objective of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿa). These include drawing the common good and leaving away the damage, egalitarian, justice, conscience and freedom. These principles in the context of Indonesia are important and necessary in order to maintain harmony among religious people and the unity of the Republic of Indonesia.

According to Kantian philosophy, it is freedom that should sanction religion and not religion that should sanction freedom. This thesis is the basic condition for religious tolerance, and it is grounded in three principles that regulate the relationship between politics and religion, namely: the principle of non-coercive force of religious belief; the moral requirement of truthfulness in professions of belief; and, the submission of religion to the principle of publicity. Abstract:
A number of widely discussed court decisions on cases of insults against religious feelings in Russia, such as the relatively recent “Pokemon Go” case of blogger Ruslan Sokolovsky or the lawsuit filed against an Orthodox priest by Nikolai Ryabchevsky in Yekaterinburg for comparing Lenin with Hitler, make pertinent the question of why toleration becomes so difficult in matters concerning religion. In this paper, I revise the classical liberal concept of toleration (David Heyd, Peter Nicholson, and John Horton), arguing that it is challenged by contemporary philosophers, who see no room for applying this concept in the “domain of identities”. The most prominent case of “primordial” identity, that is, the notion of identity as a given, is the claim of devoted believers for recognition. Should we replace the principle of toleration by the principle of recognition since the latter better corresponds to identity claims? To address this question, in the first part of the article I describe the mechanism of tolerant attitude (Nicholson, Heyd) and in the second part, I analyze the debates about the possibility or impossibility of inner religious toleration (Avishai Margalit, Cary Nederman, and Maxim Khomyakov) and further compare toleration and recognition as normative principles. In the light of the debates I took part in the conference hosted by the University of Southern Denmark in October 2019 as part of the project “Religious Majority/Minority in Public Space in Russia and Northern Europe: Historical-Cultural Analysis”, I come to the conclusion that the principle of toleration is preferable to the principle of recognition because the “second-order” arguments for toleration in a secular state will be universally acceptable (pragmatic argument) and, therefore, the principle of toleration is more logical (analytical argument). Following Peter John’s thesis about minimal recognition embedded in toleration, it may also be concluded that we need a normatively charged idea of citizenship, which could provide us with universal “second-order” foundation.

Abstract:
Rudolf Carnap's 'Principle of Tolerance' was undoubtedly one of the most infl uential precepts in 20th Century philosophy. Introduced in, Carnap's Principle suffered from ambiguities which aroused important philosophical questions from Moritz Schlick (in 1935) and Alberto Coffa (1991). Specifi cally, their questions arise from the application of the Principle to the matter of including extra-logical transformation rules (so-called 'physical rules' or 'P-rules') in the defi nition of a language, which Carnap regarded as an important difference between his own conventionalist philosophy of logic and the 'absolutist' conception of Wittgenstein's. Yet both Schlick and Coffa suggested that applying the Tolerance precept to this matter exceeds the limits of its legitimate deployment. Upon considering their objections, as well as the criticism of Wittgenstein which evoked them, it is argued that the philosophical signifi cance of the Principle of Tolerance requires its strict limitation to matters pertaining to the determination of meaning.

Abstract:
We study the learnability problem concerning the dative alternations in English (Baker, 1979; Pinker, 1989). We consider how first language learners productively apply the double-object and to-dative constructions ( give the book to library/ give the library the book), while excluding negative exceptions ( donate the book to the library/* donate the library the book). Our solution for first language acquisition is based on The Tolerance Principle, a formal model that detects productivity from the distributional properties of the input data (Yang, 2005, 2016). This principle predicts an acquisition stage where the constructions are productive, followed by a stage where learners retreat from overgeneralization and form more finely grained rules. This work calls for a formally rigorous model of acquisition, which can incorporate input effects and retain the benefits of an abstract generative grammar without resorting to piecemeal learning. We provide an analysis of child-directed speech in the CHILDES database to support the learning proposal for first language acquisition, while considering its potential applicability to second language (L2) acquisition and first language (L1) attrition.

Abstract:
A comprehensive tolerancing system is presented with its design principle, system architecture and key functions. The following functional modules, automatic generation of dimension chain, equivalent variational mechanism (EVM) modeling and visualized 3D tolerance analysis, are described in detail. Design intent is expressed by assembly tolerance specifications, which may be added to the model and used in computing predicted quality levels. A comprehensive method, based on equivalent replacement, has been developed for modeling variations in 3D mechanical assemblies. The models are constructed of common engineering elements: dimension chain, kinematic joints, assembly datums, dimensional and geometric feature tolerances, and assembly tolerance limits. The method is consistent with engineering design practice and is well suited for integration with commercial CAD systems. To make the tolerancing system robust and efficient, new functionalities are added to well-known CAD software and simulation environment. Tested by many samples, this system shows good robustness and practicability.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the characterization of the concept "principle" in jurisprudence. The main approaches associated with the specifics of the expression of the concept "principle" in law (structural and semantic) are identified and analyzed. It is explained that the content of the concept’s "principle" can be replenished with new characteristics, in connection with which there is a need for new forms of their legal verbalization. In the context of law, the understanding of principles is identified with moral values. Among them are individual freedom, conscientiousness, honesty, truthfulness, obedience to the law, love for the Motherland, disinterestedness, tolerance, rejection of violence, theft, slander and envy, kindness and mercy, loyalty to the word, respect for elders, respect for honest work, etc. Attention is drawn to the metaphysical nature of the principles in law, which is expressed, firstly, in the fact that principles in law are a complex multifaceted phenomenon of the synthesis of human consciousness and social practice, in fact, the first reason for the emergence of the norms of constitutional law; secondly, in the fact that they are not formally subject to change in time, they either exist or not, while their content evolves in time and space; thirdly.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the modern interpretation of the methodology of theoretical simulation of international relations – the system of the methodological principles. This study covers the principles of empirical approach, value approach, management approach, abstraction, necessary idealization, tolerance, creativity, historical and predictive approach and reasonable actualization. Each of the proposed principles focuses on individual, but synergistically linked and relevant to the researcher notional subject– the being of international relations. In addition, analysis of international relations is impossible without an application of the principles of materialism, synarchism, system-defined approach, coherence and emergence. Thus, the need to apply the specialized principle of emergence, derived from the principle of synarchism, is caused by the fact that the system of international relations is constantly evolving followed by the new formats of interaction between actors as well as the appearance of new functionally organized structures represented by, for example, new international organizations that emerged in the era of globalization.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the principle of tolerance in our contemporary society in the attempt to highlight limits and paradoxes in the various aspects of minority issues. From this point of view, the first part of the paper discusses Kymlicka’s contribution to multiculturalism with regard to national minorities and immigrant communities, while the second part confronts his Theory of Minority Rights with Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony and circle of humanity. Therefore, this paper aims at shifting the discourse over tolerance-related minority issues from a top-down approach toward an analysis of how tolerance is allowed to be performed. Thus, Gramsci’s philosophy of praxis is employed to disentangle moral and cultural set of values and norms within which both principle of tolerance and performativity of toleration are established and, in parallel, to reflect on reasons why others are not allowed to be performed.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the concept of religious tolerance in the context of the relationship be-tween its legal support and the practice of interfaith relations. Tolerance is viewed as one of the key principles of modern policy and practice of interfaith relations in the Russian poly-confessional religious community in close connection with the principles of freedom of con-science and confessional equality. The measure of religious tolerance is social loyalty and hu-manistic potential of a particular religious denomination. The historical origins of religious toler-ance in Islam and Orthodoxy, as well as pre-revolutionary, Soviet and modern Russian models of interfaith relations and religious politics are investigated. The characteristic of the legislative base of the modern Russian model of religious tolerance is given. Tolerance as a norm of inter-faith relations is considered on three levels. At the level of individual religious behavior of be-lievers, religious tolerance is manifested as a loyal attitude towards non-believers and atheists. At the level of interchurch relations of confessions, tolerance is realized as an orientation towards the inter-confessional world, dialogue and cooperation of confessions in maintaining the socio-cultural stability of Russian society. At the level of the religious policy of a poly-confessional state, religious tolerance is viewed in the context of the flexible, situational implementation of the principles of freedom of conscience, confessional equality, as well as ensuring effective co-operation between traditional churches and the Russian state in improving the spiritual potential and social stability of Russian society. The authors state that religious tolerance is an ultimate principle for modern spiritual situation in the Russian Federation although there is not complete correspondence between its legislative declaration and the real practice of interfaith relations. The task of state policy in the field of religion is to optimize interfaith relations in the country, relying on the support and organization of effective dialogue and cooperation between church organizations of traditional Russian confessions, both at the regional level and at the level of their central, governing bodies.

Abstract This study reports on an investigation of the productivity of the Dutch diminutive paradigm, which gives rise to five suffixal allomorphs, against the background of Yang’s (2016) Tolerance Principle. It shows how, by studying the frequency of the allomorphs and the environments in which they occur, we can use the Tolerance Principle to determine if a productive rule system can be found for the Dutch diminutives. In doing so, we also describe how we collected the necessary data by setting up a corpus study on Dutch diminutives, including a specific one with data from child directed speech.

Abstract:
John Wesley published his sermon ‘Catholic Spirit’ in 1750, after he and his preachers had experienced persecution by Church leaders. Wesley stressed that persecution stemmed from lack of tolerance, and one of the reasons for this was the absence of liberty of thinking in the Church. In order for liberty of thinking to be practised, one had to be able to doubt one's own opinions, thereby accepting the limitations of one's knowledge. Most of this sermon, now lauded for its ecumenical brilliance, asserts that such acceptance provides space for tolerance. This tolerance leads to Christian unity. In addition to exploring the sermon, this essay addresses An Answer to the Rev. Mr. Church's Remarks on the Rev. Mr. John Wesley's Last Journal (1745), Letter to a Roman Catholic (1749) and Wesley's correspondence with Gilbert Boyce (1750). The argument thus provides an example of how doubt contributed to the Methodist emphasis on tolerance.

Abstract:
The mankind is going the way of the fast scientific and technological progress, at the same time feeling shortage of respect, kindness, and mutual understanding in this global process. The modern scientific and technical progress is leaving behind the moral or ethical progress stimulating emergence of new forms of spiritual impoverishment, cruelty, violence and hostility. The best humanistic principles, which are based on mutual aid, sympathy are depreciating, blurring the very concept of the moral. The situation gives evidence of the process of dehumanisation of the society, when the person’s value becomes lower than other values. The relevance of examination of tolerance in the aspect of humanisation is determined by the society’s demand for development of relations of a new type, which would be grounded on humanistic base, where every person is regarded as the highest value, where there is a priority of general human values against ethnic values, where the basic principle of people’s relations are: benevolence, humanity, mercy and respect.

Abstract:
Although the practice of tolerance might appear to be endangered by the natural law, closer consideration shows that it is grounded in the natural law. By analysis we find that tolerance is a virtue of the Aristotelian type, founded on the two great pillars of right judgment in the protection of greater ends against lesser ends, and right judgment in the protection of ends against mistaken means, with the second being the more fundamental. While this analysis is new, the insights that it elaborates are old, as can be seen through consideration of the four different ways in which the medieval natural law thinker Thomas Aguinas qualified the classical idea that the purpose of law is to make men good. We conclude that although the natural law does generate a doctrine of tolerance, it does not produce a liberal doctrine of tolerance. That is, it is not based on neutrality, skepticism, abstract subjective rights, or a harm principle, whether of the generic of the John Stuart Millian variety.
