Abstract:
The overall objective of the study was to identify factors which play a key role in diet and exercise behaviour for migrant and Danish bus drivers in a workplace setting. The aim was to develop a framework to illustrate how the individual, contextual and cultural influences on health behaviour (diet and physical activity) interplay in an everyday perspective. Data was collected using a qualitative approach. Methods applied consisted of contextual based observations and semi structured interviews with sixteen (n=16) bus drivers. Four interviews were conducted with Danish, four with Somali, four with Turkish and four with participants with a Pakistani ethnic origin. The data was analysed using grounded theory. The core category which emerged from the data was „impact of individual, contextual and cultural influences on health behaviours‟. The core category was supported by five higher order categories. These were as follows: (1) Meanings of health (2) health behaviour and the potential to change, (3) Maintaining Balance (4) Workplace influences on health (5) Positioning in the social context. Each of the higher order categories was further supported with categories and sub-categories. The analysis illustrated findings on different levels. As a result of the impact of individual, contextual and cultural findings, strive for balance through a process of equilibrium was core to well-being and health in an everyday perspective. A collection of factors from the different levels of influence played a key role on diet and physical activity in an everyday work-day context. These have been illustrated through the use of quotes and frameworks. Based on the findings of the study, future research and practice recommendations are outlined.

Abstract:
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária
Due to constant changes in restraint techniques, equipment and even immobilization drugs, wildlife veterinary practices have improved over the past decades. This broad progress coupled with the experience of practitioners contributes towards a safer practice for both the animals and people involved in the procedures. Anesthetic protocols used for chemical immobilizations performed during an internship in South Africa (184 of 245 restrained individuals) were analyzed for the various species approached, taking into account the darting equipment involved, the surrounding environment and some of the main purposes of each intervention. The different chemical immobilizations performed were classified as successful (176) or unsuccessful (8), and the most common complications that affected the procedures were documented. The reasons for the failings that in cases led to a second darting (13 cases) or to the death of animals (3 cases) are also addressed and preventive measures to avoid them were put forward. It is important to analyze the information logged after every immobilization procedure, including personal experiences from each clinical case, and present and disseminate the conclusions, to help wildlife practitioners worldwide avoid future complications.

Abstract:
Thesis (Master of Emergency Medical Care (MEMC))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019
Introduction: Road traffic injuries are the ninth leading cause of death globally. Projections indicate that without new and sustained commitment globally to preventing such injuries, the situation will only worsen. Motor vehicle rescue does not lend itself to the prevention of road traffic incidents but through ensuring that all incidents are managed using sound evidence could contribute in positive outcomes for victims. It is unknown what contribution rescue education makes to the body of medical rescue knowledge in South Africa. Aims: The aim of this research was to investigate the relevance and scope of the principles of physics within medical rescue specifically in the context of motor vehicle rescue. It appears that current traditional methods of presenting rescue training, which is mainly procedural and technical, may contribute to 'segmented' learning. Research Methodology: Using an interpretive research design, multiple qualitative methodologies were employed. This methodological triangulation was intended to improve construct validity and trustworthiness of findings. A modified Delphi process through which questionnaires was repeatedly distributed to rescue experts was employed. Process tracing was used to evaluate the developed typical motor vehicle rescue case scenario narrative for underpinnings of the principles of physics. The Bachelor Emergency Medical Care Physics and Extrication subject guides was evaluated for its educational alignment during the document analysis. Legitimation Code theory as a theoretical framework was utilised to appraise the knowledge gap. Results & Discussion: Motor vehicle rescue incident may not always present in a similar manner due to various factors and influences. Development of the typical motor vehicle case narrative from which its physics principles could be identified was imperative. Most motor vehicle rescue related training occur with the vehicle in the upright orientation on all four wheels. This manner of frequent training may restrict rescue practitioners from moving beyond their 'typical' training knowledge when the situation presents a typical. The thematic document analysis of the BEMC Physics and Extrication subject guides lacked the necessary coherence which is required for a professional degree. It was deemed void of certain threshold concepts and structure which would allow the student to move between the theoretical and contextual knowledge. Motor vehicle rescue subject guides and most textbooks on the topic leaned towards a procedural and very technically detailed pedagogy, to the extent that it could contribute to segmented learning. Conclusion: Developing curricula that is underpinned by a theoretically sound evidence base would promote credibility of a qualification. Curricula by design inform the teaching, learning and the competencies which would ultimately be assessed. Professional degrees are intended to develop practitioners who would graduate with the knowledge and competencies to adapt to situations. In addition, graduate attributes of lifelong learning, reflective practice and the ability to contribute to the development of new knowledge is secondary to the goal of qualification attainment.

Doran, Paul. "Ontology modularization : principles and practice." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2009. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/1306/.

Full text
Abstract:
Technological advances have provided us with the capability to build large intelligent systems capable of using knowledge, which relies on being able to represent the knowledge in a way that machines can process and interpret. This is achieved by using ontologies; that is logical theories that capture the knowledge of a domain. It is widely accepted that ontology development is a non-trivial task and can be expedited through the reuse of existing ontologies. However, it is likely that the developer would only require a part of the original ontology; obtaining this part is the purpose of ontology modularization. In this thesis a graph traversal based technique for performing ontology module extraction is presented. We present an extensive evaluation of the various ontology modularization techniques in the literature; including a proposal for an entropy inspired measure. A task-based evaluation is included, which demonstrates that traversal based ontology module extraction techniques have comparable performance to the logical based techniques. Agents, autonomous software components, use ontologies in complex systems; with each agent having its own, possibly different, ontology. In such systems agents need to communicate and successful communication relies on the agents ability to reach an agreement on the terms they will use to communicate. Ontology modularization allows the agents to agree on only those terms relevant to the purpose of the communication. Thus, this thesis presents a novel application of ontology modularization as a space reduction mechanism for the dynamic selection of ontology alignments in multi-agent systems. The evaluation of this novel application shows that ontology modularization can reduce the search space without adversely affecting the quality of the agreed ontology alignment.

Abstract:
Selective robustness is a key feature of biochemical networks, conferring a fitness benefit to organisms living in dynamic environments. The (in-)sensitivity of a network to external perturbations results from the interaction between network dynamics, design, and enzyme kinetics. In this work, we focus on the subtle interplay between robustness and fragility. We describe a quantitative method for defining the fragility and robustness of system fluxes and metabolite concentrations to perturbations in enzyme activity. We find that for many mathematical models of metabolic pathways, the robustness is captured by a broad distribution of the robustness coefficients and demonstrate that, unlike fragility, robustness is not a conserved process. Using a combination of existing in silico models and novel sets of models, designed to allow specific network features of interest to be studied in isolation, we examine the effect of various network properties on the robustness of such pathways. We discuss the question of how to measure, in a meaningful way, the robustness of a pathway as a whole, defining several summary metrics which, in combination, can be used to compare the robustness of different pathways. We show that networking increases robustness, but that robustness is affected differently by varying aspects of complexity. The effect of system control loops on robustness is analysed and we find that, in general, the addition of such regulation increases pathway robustness. The evolution of flux robustness is also examined. We show that robustness in metabolic pathways is unlikely to simply be a by-product of selection for other pathway traits, highlighting several trade-offs that result from the evolution of robust systems. Finally, we extend our definition of robustness, defining robustness coefficients for cellular properties other than flux or metabolite concentration, and to perturbations other than changes in enzyme activity. Using the effect of benzoic acid on glycolysis as a case study, we show how such robustness coefficients can be used to give novel insights from experimental data.

Ataei, Mehrnaz. "Location data privacy : principles to practice." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Jaume I, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/666740.

Full text
Abstract:
A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Information Management, specialization in Geographic Information Systems
Location data is essential to the provision of relevant and tailored information in location-based services (LBS) but has the potential to reveal sensitive information about users. Unwanted disclosure of location data is associated with various threats known as dataveillance which can lead to risks like loss of control, (continuous) monitoring, identification, and social profiling. Striking a balance between providing a service based on the user’s location while protecting their (location) privacy is thus a key challenge in this area. Although many solutions have been developed to mitigate the data privacy-related threats, the aspects involving users (i.e. User Interfaces (UI)) and the way in which location data management can affects (location) data privacy have not received much attention in the literature. This thesis develops and evaluates approaches to facilitate the design and development of privacy-aware LBS. This work has explicitly focused on three areas: location data management in LBS, the design of UI for LBS, and compliance with (location) data privacy regulation. To address location data management, this thesis proposes modifications to LBS architectures and introduces the concept of temporal and spatial ephemerality as an alternative way to manage location privacy. The modifications include adding two components to the LBS architecture: one component dedicated to the management of decisions regarding collected location data such as applying restriction on the time that the service provider stores the data; and one component for adjusting location data privacy settings for the users of LBS. This thesis then develops a set of UI controls for fine-grained management of location privacy settings based on privacy theory (Westin), privacy by design principles and general UI design principles. Finally, this thesis brings forth a set of guidelines for the design and development of privacy-aware LBS through the analysis of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and expert recommendations. Service providers, designers, and developers of LBS can benefit from the contributions of this work as the proposed architecture and UI model can help them to recognise and address privacy issues during the LBS development process. The developed guidelines, on the other hand, can be helpful when developers and designers face difficulties understanding (location) data privacy-related regulations. The guidelines include both a list of legal requirements derived from GDPR’s text and expert suggestions for developers and designers of LBS in the process of complying with data privacy regulation.

Robbins, Sheri, and Sheri Robbins. "Translating Theoretical Principles to Classroom Practice." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625843.

Full text
Abstract:
This study followed two teacher candidates from the Communities as Resources in Early Childhood Teacher Education (CREATE) project into their first year classrooms to determine whether they were able to translate the theoretical principles from their teacher preparation program into practice during their first year of teaching. It also examined the supporting and limiting contextual factors that affected translation both during their teacher preparation and in their first year of teaching. Multiple case study methodology was used to look closely at each case independently providing consistency through replication, while also allowing the ability to look across both cases to develop more powerful findings (Stake, 2006; Baxter & Jack, 2008; Yin, 2014). A conceptual frame was developed around translation, revisiting how it has been used in other fields of research in the past (Catford, 1974; Bassnett, 2013; Major & Cordey-Hayes, 2000; Holden & Von Kortzfleisch, 2004; Jacobson, Butterill & Goering, 2003; Davison, 2009; Straus, Tetroe, & Graham, 2009) and how it is currently being used as a metaphor in the field of education (Cook-Sather, 2001, 2006) to provide a lens into the intricacies and flexibility of the process of translation. Literature was reviewed to provide background into research that has looked closely at the impact teacher preparation programs have on the first year of teaching, and to provide background information into the conceptualization of the work undergirding the principles of CREATE. It is crucial for teacher preparation programs to follow their own graduates into their classrooms to gain a deeper understanding of what concepts, theories, and principles translated from university classrooms and field experiences to practice in first year teacher's classrooms, in order to make changes to their teacher education curriculum to prevent a breakdown of translation. This study offers insight into what supports and limits translation and offers suggestions for future research in the area of translation.

Stone, Michael H., Margaret E. Stone, and William A. Sands. "Principles and Practice of Resistance Training." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2007. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/186.

Full text
Abstract:
Principles and Practice of Resistance Training represents a true breakthrough in planning and monitoring strength training programs. This research-based book details how to systematically examine the physical, physiological, and biomechanical parameters associated with crafting resistance training programs to improve sport performance and strength and power in athletes. The authors bring together more than 100 collective years of teaching, conducting research, and coaching national- and international-level athletes to share their unique insights concerning adaptations to strength and conditioning. The text is written in a manner that challenges professionals while remaining accessible to advanced coaches. It begins by presenting readers with an understanding of basic science. This scientific foundation allows readers to formulate a sound training process that is more likely to produce the desired short- and long-term results. Next, the text examines how to test, monitor, and evaluate adaptations to various types of training programs. It emphasizes the significance of appropriately monitoring training programs to identify elements of the program to adjust so the goals of clients or athletes are more effectively and efficiently achieved. Finally, the authors discuss exercise selection and present a practical example so readers can learn to apply the information in the text to build their own training programs. Each chapter is written in a “stand-alone” manner so that readers can refer back to the material as needed. Principles and Practice of Resistance Training also explores key questions that currently have no clear, scientifically proven answers. For these issues, the authors offer reasoned, speculative explanations based on the best available information and data—including anecdotal evidence— intended to stimulate additional observation and research that will eventually offer a clearer understanding and resolution of the issues involved. In sharing their personal experiences as coaches and research scientists, the authors are able to address issues that are not normally dealt with in academic programs. Principles and Practice of Resistance Training is far more than a general guide for strength training. It is an in-depth exploration of the science behind the training. Armed with the scientific understanding and the tools to put that information into practice, you will be able to develop training programs that help your athletes or clients excel.

Abstract:
Experimental Software Engineering has straightforwardly evolved in the last decades due to the effort of the community in providing consolidated training, teaching and practice. Particularly, for controlled experiments and quasi-experiments, the software engineering community has discussed on the lack of reproducibility and the missing of experimental artifacts sharing policies, such as, dataset, baselines, metamodels, repositories, and scripts. These are, therefore, important issues that jeopardizes controlled experimentation to evolve as rigorous as in millennial sciences as Medicine and Physics. In this ongoing work, it is presented a proposal of a conceptual framework for software engineering controlled experiments and quasi-experiments based on the main principles and practices of Open Science. It is understood that Open Science is one of the pillars to the evolution of science, consequently, to software engineering. The FAIR data, metadata, repositories, curation and provenance are some of the main practices discussed in this paper. Ongoing activities are described, in terms of how they are being performed and their relationship with prospective ones.

Abstract:
Andrei Stefanovich Bessonov, a well-known Russian parasitologist, coordinator of scientific research in parasitology in the Russian Federation and the CIS countries, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Laureate of the USSR State Prize, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was born on April 10, 1929, in the Krasnodar Territory. After graduating from the Novocherkassk Zoological Veterinary Institute in 1952, he worked as the Chief Veterinarian of the Syamzhensky District, the Vologda Region, and in 1955 he entered the Ph. D. Program at the All-Union Institute of Helminthology named after K. I. Skryabin (VIGIS). After graduation from the post-graduate studies and defending his Ph. D. thesis in 1959, he worked at the same Institute. From 1982 to 2002, A. S. Bessonov was the director of the VIGIS. The A. S. Bessonov’s works on epizootology, diagnosis and prevention of trichinellosis are very famous among parasitologists. Theoretical principles and practical studies on trichinellosis were reflected in two unique monographs by A. S. Bessonov, Epizootology (Epidemiology) and Prevention of Trichinellosis (1972) and Diagnostics of Trichinellosis (1975). The results of the research by A. S. Bessonov and his students in echinococcosis (Echinococcus granulosus) in animals are well known. In 2003, the monograph Alveolar Echinococcosis and Hydatid Disease (2003) was published. Under his direct influence, the VIGIS actively developed research to create genetically engineered vaccines and new dosage forms of antiparasitic drugs (liposomal, etc.), as well as research in the helminth genome. Together with foreign scientists, A. S. Bessonov participated in creating Guidelines of the FAO, WHO and UNEP on the prevention and control of trichinellosis, echinococcosis and cysticercosis in animals and humans. He was a member of the editorial boards of the following scientific and production journals: Veterinary Medicine, Helminthologia (Slovakia) and Riview in Parasitology (Spain).

Woodhill, Jim, and Juliet Millican. Systems Thinking and Practice: A guide to concepts, principles and tools for FCDO and partners. Institute of Development Studies, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2023.002.

Full text
Abstract:
This guide is a basic reference on systems thinking and practice tailored to the context and needs of the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). It is an output of the FCDO Knowledge for Development Programme (K4D), which facilitated a Learning Journey on Systems Thinking and Practice with FCDO staff during 2021 and 2022. The guide offers a common language and shared framing of systems thinking for FCDO and its partners. It explores what this implies for working practices, business processes and leadership. It also offers links to additional resources and tools on systems thinking. We hope it can support systems thinking to become more commonplace within the culture and practices of FCDO and working relations with partner organisations.
