Al-slaity, Ala'a Nasir. "Beyond Recommendation Accuracy: A Human-Like Recommender System." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41881.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the emergence of Recommender Systems (RS), most of the research has focused on improving the capability of a recommender system to predict and provide an accurate recommendation. However, the literature has demonstrated increasing evidence that providing accurate recommendations is not sufficient to increase users’ acceptance of the provided recommendations. Hence, it is vital for a recommender system to focus not only on the accuracy of the provided recommendations but also on other factors that influence the acceptance of recommendations and the extent to which these recommendations ar

Shrif, Fadil Ezzedin Irhoma. "The accuracy of filtered basis functions for the first principles modelling of defects in semiconductors." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1935.

Full text
Abstract:
This work presents the results of calculations using filtered basis functions performed with the ab initio modelling program (AIMPRO). The filtration method works by projecting out (filtering) components of a reference basis function that are not required for a description of the occupied states, thereby producing functions that are localised in energy. This leads to a significant reduction in the number of functions that are needed. It is demonstrated that when studying diamond, silicon and defects in these materials, the use of filtered basis sets using just four basis functions per atom can

U.S. GAAP and the software industry in particular, are on the verge of a major alteration in revenue-recognition accounting standards. The IASB-FASB joint revenue-recognition project is due to be finalized over the next year with the result being a shift from a rules-based set of accounting standards to a principles-based standard. The purpose of this research is to examine financial statement preparers' software revenue-recognition decisions under a principles-based accounting standard compared to a rules-based accounting standard both with and without a personal incentive to maximize revenue

Abstract:
The reaction-diffusion master equation (RDME) is a stochastic model for spatially heterogeneous chemical systems. Stochastic models have proved to be useful for problems from molecular biology since copy numbers of participating chemical species often are small, which gives a stochastic behaviour. The RDME is a discrete space model, in contrast to spatially continuous models based on Brownian motion. In this thesis two accuracy issues of the RDME on unstructured meshes are studied. The first concerns the rates of diffusion events. Errors due to previously used rates are evaluated, and a second

Abstract:
First-principle modelling of chemical processes and their unit operations has been of great interest in the chemical process, as well as the control and allied industries over the past decades. This is because it offers the opportunity to develop virtual representations (models) of real process systems, which can be used to describe and predict the dynamic behaviour of those systems. These models are based on the fundamentals of the transport phenomena of fluid dynamics (involving momentum transfer), mass transfer, and energy transfer of the systems they describe. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of THRASS (Teaching Handwriting, Reading and Spelling Skills) on the word level accuracy skills of a group of grade 2 learners. Word level accuracy is one sub skill in learning to read and is an indicator of the word recognition abilities of the child. THRASS is a program that has been designed to systematically teach phonics and, thus, teaches the basic building blocks of word sounds and structure so as to improve the child’s decoding ability and word recognition ability.
