Abstract:

A group of early modern German prints related to relic displays, reliquaries, and collecting, though explored by Heinrich Otte in the mid-1800s, has been ignored in recent art historical literature. Though references to the various prints appear in texts on social, cultural, and religious history, a more in-depth consideration of the works is warranted. This thesis, as a preliminary step, categorizes the prints into two sub-groups, narrative and index. It further utilizes the intriguing relationships embodied in the prints to trace societal and cultural changes, including the rise of event reporting, collecting and organization of knowledge, and changes in religious practices.

Abstract:
The dissertation studies sixteenth-century German artists' manuals (Kunstbüchlein), a new kind of book that addresses certain types of artistic practices. The Kunstbüchlein testify to and shape transformations of knowledge in early modern Europe. Disseminating practical knowledge in printed form, they endowed craft know-how with a form of authority until then reserved for the liberal arts. They aimed also to reconcile theoretical and practical knowledge, what Albrecht Dürer (the crucial forerunner to the authors of the Kunstbüchlein) termed respectively Kunst and Brauch. Authors Sebald Beham, Heinrich Voghterr, Heinrich Lautensack, and Erhard Schön sought to provide accessible, useful knowledge. Focused on a limited set of topics, they pretended to be closer to practice and to respond more effectively to the needs of their apprentices than Dürer and others in their publications. In fact, the Kunstbüchlein did not mediate Brauch, but show instead what their authors understood Brauch to be. Emphasizing the hands-on acquisition of knowledge through looking, reading, and doing, the Kunstbüchlein placed the printed image, whether as schematic diagram or finished illustration, at the core of the didactic process.

Abstract:
In the seventeenth century, news of the Transylvanian princes in weekly newspapers and biannual Messrelationen rarely comes from the principality itself, but from the cities which are the Transylvanians' allies, enemies and invaded neighbors. This thesis examines the German language periodicals of four periods: István Bocskai's rebellion against the Habsburg Emperor (1604-5), Gábor Bethlen's first march into Hungary (1619-21), György I Rákóczi's Hungarian offensive (1643-5) and György II Rákóczi's incursion into Poland-Lithuania and the subsequent Ottoman invasion of Transylvania (1657-8). Between these periods, political developments and postal improvements shift the reporting networks which carry the news of Transylvania. As a result, each prince is reported on by a different set of reporting regions altering the language of the news. Bocskai's rebellion is presented in the Messrelationen as an alliance of the unchristian Protestants and Ottomans, dependent on military success rather than political legitimacy and causing devastation in the region. This perspective continues in later periods in news from Vienna, the most consistent reporter on Transylvania, as the princes are shown to be capable of upsetting the Emperor's position in Hungary, but more feared for their association with the Ottomans. Bethlen's march is also reported on by Transylvania's allies in Prague, who present the prince with greater diplomatic importance, and supporters in Hungary, who detail the diet meetings where he is elected king, proving his legitimacy. György I's march does not benefit from a breadth of perspectives, and Vienna’s dominates the news with its concern for quick peace. György II’s invasion of Poland is largely reported from the new news centers along the Baltic, presenting him as a military commander with precedent for his claim to the Polish throne. With the Ottomans' invasion the following year, Vienna’s fears for the safety of Christendom once again dictate Transylvania’s portrayal in the news.

Abstract:
The present thesis is an investigation into the musical rhetoric of Protestant funeral music in seventeenth-century Germany. The study begins with an exposition on the present state of musicological inquiry into occasional music in the Baroque, focusing primarily on ad hoc funeral music. Because funeral music is not discussed in any of the basic music reference works, a cursory overview of existing critical studies is included. The survey of this literature is followed by a brief discussion of methodological obstacles and procedure with regard to the present study. Chapter Two comprises a general discussion of Protestant funeral liturgy in Baroque Germany. Although numerous examples of the Divine Service in the Lutheran Church have survived the seventeenth century, not a single order of service for the funeral liturgy from the period seems to exist. This chapter provides both the social and extra-liturgical background for the music as well as a plausible Lutheran funerary liturgy based on documents from the period and modern studies. Prosopopoeia, the rhetorical personification of the dead, is the subject of Chapter Three. After examining the theoretical background of this rhetorical device, from Roman Antiquity to the German Baroque, the trope is examined in the context of funerary sermonic oratory. The discussion of oratorical rhetoric is followed by an investigation into the musical application of the concept of prosopopoeia in various styles of funerary composition, from simple cantional-style works to compositions in which the personified deceased assumes certain physical dimensions. Chapter Four includes an examination of various other musical-rhetorical figures effectively employed in funeral music. Also treated in this chapter are musica1-rhetorical aspects of duple and triple metre, where triple metre in particular, depending on the text, can be understood figuratively, metaphorically or as a combination of both. As this chapter makes clear, owing to the perceived antithetical properties of metre and certain figures, musical rhetoric was often used to illustrate the distinction between this world and the next.

Avec l’introduction d'ateliers à l’université de Paris en 1470 commence l'histoire de l'imprimerie dans l'espace francophone. Un des fondateurs fut l'érudit allemand Johannes Heynlin von Stein. Il marque le début d'un développement durant lequel les imprimeurs allemands furent d'une importance décisive : Jusqu'en 1500, sur 40 villes francophones dans lesquelles nous pouvons attester la présence d’au moins une imprimerie, onze ont été introduites par des Allemands. Ils les ont installées surtout dans le sud-est du royaume de France ainsi que dans le Duché de Bourgogne, le Comté de Bourgogne et dans les régions de la Suisse francophone actuelle. Ce bouleversement important de l'histoire des médias était le sujet de la thèse. À la base d'une méthode sur l'histoire de la matérialité, l'étude montre que les imprimeries devaient être à la croisée de différents développements. L'étude examine les biographies des imprimeurs, présente leurs programmes d’imprimerie, décrit le milieu universitaire, urbain et monastique et épluche les éditions qu’ils ont imprimé. Elle a permis de comprendre la complexité transitionnelle entre l’époque des manuscrits et celle des livres imprimés, des sociétés non-typographiques aux sociétés typographiques. Finalement, l’analyse met en évidence que les premiers imprimeurs allemands furent un groupe communicatif en mouvement ayant un réseau au-delà des frontières qui peut être considéré comme exemplaire pour l’histoire de l'imprimerie en France et et même en Europe. En analysant en détail un groupe important des imprimeurs cette approche présente des nouveaux résultats quant à l'histoire précoce de l'imprimerie française et incite à un dialogue scientifique international
With the establishment of a press at University of Paris in 1470, the history of printing presses in the French speaking world began. One of the founders was the German scholar Johannes Heynlin von Stein. He marks the start of a historically significant development in which printers from the Holy Roman Empire are of central importance. In the 15th century, it were in fact German printers who took the initiative to establish printing presses in eleven out of forty French cities. Geographically, those presses were predominantly located in the southeast of the French Kingdom and in the Duchy of Burgundy, in the Palatinate County of Burgundy, as well as in the region of what is today the French-speaking part of Switzerland. This media-historically important transition is the focus of this dissertation. On the basis of a profound methodology rooted in the history of materiality, the thesis shows that printing presses must be understood as an intersection of different developments. A comprehensive examination of the biographies of the respective printers and their printing portfolios are presented. Additionally, this thesis records the university, urban and monastic environment of the presses and critically evaluates the printed editions. By doing so, it is possible to work out in detail – while always referring to the sources – the complexity of the transition from a period of manuscripts to a period of printed books. Hence, a transition from non-typographic to typographic societies. Finally, this thesis proves that the German printers were a communicative and trans-border networked group which exemplarily stands for the French and partly for the European history of the printing press in the 15th century. By precisely and extensively analysing one of the most important groups of printers in the 15th century, this thesis allows for new insights to the history of early French printing presses and therefore seeks to fill a gap in academic literature. Furthermore, it encourages an international and scientific dialogue
Mit der Einrichtung einer Buchdruckerei in der Universität Paris im Jahre 1470 beginnt die Geschichte des Buchdrucks im französischsprachigen Raum. Einer der Gründer war der deutsche Gelehrte Johannes Heynlin von Stein. Er steht am Anfang einer Entwicklung, in der den Druckern aus dem Heiligen Römischen Reich entscheidende Bedeutung zukam - in elf von rund 40 französischen Städten, in denen in der Inkunabelzeit eine Druckerpresse eingerichtet wurde, ging die Initiative von deutschen Druckern aus. Sie waren vor allem im Südosten des Königreichs Frankreich sowie im Herzogtum Burgund, in der Freigrafschaft Burgund und in Gebieten der heutigen französischsprachigen Schweiz präsent. Dieser mediengeschichtlich bedeutsamen Umbruchphase widmet sich die vorliegende Untersuchung. Auf der Basis einer materialitätsgeschichtlich fundierten Methode kann gezeigt werden, dass die Druckereien als Kreuzungspunkte unterschiedlicher Entwicklungslinien verstanden werden müssen. Die Studie untersucht die Biographien der Drucker, stellt ihr Druckprogramm vor, erfasst das universitäre, städtische oder monastische Umfeld der Pressen und wertet die von ihnen produzierten Ausgaben aus. Auf diese Weise kann detailliert, und stets mit Bezug auf die Quellen, die Komplexität des Übergangs vom Handschriften- zum Druckzeitalter, von non-typographischen zu typographischen Gesellschaften herausgearbeitet werden. Darüber hinaus wird nachgewiesen, dass es sich bei den deutschen Erstdruckern um eine kommunikative und über Ländergrenzen hinweg breit vernetzte Gruppe handelt, die als exemplarisch für das französische sowie in Teilen auch für das europäische Druckwesen des 15. Jahrhunderts gelten kann. Ziel ist es, neben der Produktion wichtiger Standardwerke für Blinde die Verbreitung der Braille-Notenschrift zu fördern. Die Braille-Notenschrift ist eine ertastbare Notenschrift, die aus erhabenen Punkten, wie bei der Blindenschrift, besteht. Die normalen Schwarzschrift-Noten werden technisch bearbeitet und mithilfe einer neu entwickelten Software in Braille-Noten übersetzt.

abstract: After being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2009, Herta Müller attained great prominence around the world. Commentators, especially in English-speaking countries, seemed shocked by the decision. One of the primary concerns was that Müller was relatively unknown. This thesis seeks to address this and other concerns by looking at reviews of her works in German- and English-language publications both before and after the Nobel Prize was awarded. This thesis analyses chronologically the reception of her books beginning with Niederungen in 1982 and ending with the reception of her novel Atemschaukel in 2009. It compares the reception of the original German text to that of the English translation; therefore only works which have been translated and published in English are discussed. The study also shows that while Müller's work did not top the bestseller charts, at least before the Nobel Prize, she was hardly the completely unknown author that some in the English-language media believed. This thesis seeks to present trends in the reception as well as provide a basis for further study of the reception of Herta Müller.

This paper studies the functions of the China's German-Chinese Dictionary (traditional version) compiled by Yang, Yieh-Zi (楊業治), and printed in Taiwan in 1993. In order to verify what it has, the lexicographic theories are applied as a means of quoting from original functions of the dictionary. Furthermore, the opinions of 728 students after using the dictionary are discussed; meanwhile, the practical functions of the dictionary will also be displayed. According to the theories and the viewpoints of students, many problems are found existent in the dictionary. The researcher then provided the possible solutions and suggestions for these problems. Also, the differences between the lexicographic theories and the viewpoints of the students are analyzed. In detail, according to the theories the researcher concluded, the results of questionaries and interviews of the students using the dictionary, these functions of Yang’s dictionary could not totally match the theories and the students’ needs because many problems are found both in offering information and practical functions in the explanatory pages, the lexicon, and the appendix. Consequently, the researcher supplied some suggestions to modify the defectives in Yang’s dictionary. Besides, the researcher attempted to use the students’ viewpoints to examine the theories to see whether the lexicographic theories are valuable. Based on the theories the researcher concluded, the viewpoints of students, and the researcher’s suggestions, Yang’s dictionary should be modified.
