After Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff had passed away on 1 March 1911, his pupil Charles Marinus van Deventer (1860–1931) wrote a very personal ‘in memoriam’ in the Dutch literary periodical De Gids, pointing out that van't Hoff had merely been interested in scientific facts, not in the people discovering these facts. Van't Hoff considered the study of the history of chemistry, although by no means uncongenial, a matter of little importance. He once even said: ‘To me historical research appears to be appropriate for a chemist in the decline of life, when he no longer creates professional ideas, an

In 1899 C.T. van Deventer, a progressive Liberal from the Netherlands East Indies, published an article in the Dutch reviewDe Gidstitled ‘Een Eereschuld’ (‘A Debt of Honour’). The Dutch wordschuld, however, has two different translations in English: debt and guilt. Van Deventer meant both. Half a century earlier, under the notorious Cultivation System, the Dutch government had extracted hundreds of millions of guilders from Java, amounting to nearly a quarter of all government revenue around the middle of the nineteenth century. The Zuiderzee towns and the Hanse: information exchange, conflicts and conflict resolution. This article uses the Zuiderzee region, and in particular Deventer, as a case study, to put forward two theses. First of all, that the exchange of information was a vital component of conflict resolution – and more broadly, of conflict management – within the Hanse. The analysis shows that the concepts of ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’, which have been recurrent in the discussions on the position of the Zuiderzee towns in the Hanse, were very relative. Abstract In the Netherlands, and elsewhere, too, Laurens Janszoon Coster of Haarlem, and not Gutenberg, was long thought to have been the inventor of the art of printing. The myth—for that is what it was—was only definitively repudiated at the end of the nineteenth century, though some continued to believe in Coster until their dying breath. The Coster myth was deployed to give the history of the Netherlands status and international prestige. This article concerns the extent to which Coster’s supposed invention was known in the Dutch East Indies—today’s Indonesia, a Dutch colony at that time—a

In the small provincial cities of the eastern Netherlands, the annual election of magistrates and town councilors was perhaps the most important public ritualof the year under the old regime. The elaborate and often solemn ceremony symbolized ancient chartered liberties—even when results of the co-optative elections were a foregone conclusion—and thus served to reinforce the community's sense of corporate identity. In 1786, however, in the midst of astruggle for control of the city, the annual Petrikeur in Deventer got out of hand. The day started out normally enough with the traditional worsh

AbstractExploiting the most recent bibliographical information available, this article surveys Spanish-language printing in the southern and northern Netherlands from its tentative beginnings in 1520 to 1700. The anni mirabiles (1543-1560) have done much to shape perceptions of the trade in Spanish books. Yet, these were relatively short-lived. Overall, production grew steadily before 1701 with Antwerp then Brussels and Amsterdam becoming market leaders. A staggering 350 printers and publishers are known to have been involved in producing these works, although for almost all of them, printing

A number of Protestants and their adversaries produced striking testimonies to the influence which Erasmus exercised on Protestant-minded people in the sixteenth-century Southern Netherlands. Yet Erasmus’ impact on the break-through and the further development of the Protestant reform movements is more complex than these testimonies seem to suggest. The first part of this article tries to probe Erasmus’ influence by using the evidence from the printing press. Data about book production, book ownership, and the index of forbidden books point to a strong distribution of Erasmus’ work even in the

Abstract The spread of the Reformation was in large measure abetted by Gutenberg’s earlier development of printing with moveable metal type. As printing presses sprang up in cities throughout Europe, many focused on printing Bibles. At first, the Latin Vulgate Bible was most printed, but after Luther’s German translation of the Bible, the printing of vernacular Bibles increased. In some places, printing Bibles was restricted; some printers were fined or even executed for not following the censorship laws. In early modern times the printing presses of the Netherlands produced many books for the internal and the international market. The country is sometimes referred to as ‘the bookshop of the world’. Therefore it is very important that a reliable and trustworthy bibliography of all books reflecting the total print output is created. Plans for this started in the nineteenth and early twentieth century with bibliographies of the earliest books. In the 1970s plans were made for an all encompassing bibliography of the printed book up to 1801: the Short-Title Catalogue Netherlands (STCN). Since then

Heritage creates people’s memory as well as their existence. The Knooz Syria archive represents the history of the press and printing in Syria from the mid-nineteenth century up to the 1970s. Forced to flee Damascus, they left behind tens of thousands of newspapers, books and documents representing more than 200 years of extended history. With the help of the Prince Claus Fund in the Netherlands, they were able to move an important part of the collection to a safe place. Work con
