Abstract:
The principle of inking system in sheet-feed printing press is introduced. Some tests on ink thickness are performed and the experiment results shows that in the traditional press, some inherent defects cause serious quality problems. The application of shaft-less drive technology to printing press is introduced and the drive principle of inking rollers of printing press and is explained. Synchronization control method of rollers is put forward, and the shaft-less technology is applied to the inking roller. Control system of shaft-less roller press is constructed for four color printing. Mechanical zero and electrical zero can be reset and corrected. Slight asynchrony is allowed between inking rollers and cylinders for normal printing, and the speed difference between them can eliminate a kind of printing troublesome of ghosting when needed. Analysis shows that with this technology, the functions of press are extended. Furthermore, the results of calculation indicated that when printing the special products, the make-ready time for inking is shorten about 50% and the power consumption is decreased about 19.8 to 21.5%, so the efficiency of machine can be increased by a big margin and the power cost can be cut down obviously.

In line with the stages that humanity has gone through, the technique of putting information on paper with symbols has evolved gradually. Modern printing techniques evolved from early printing techniques and materials. Subjects of the Ottoman Empire closely followed advances in Europe, and the printing press was introduced there. Armenians significantly advanced printing and publishing in the Ottoman and Turkish Republic eras. They established printing facilities and published books, periodicals, newspapers, and other things. While carrying out these activities, they sometimes received awards, but they had problems in some periods. Due to some of the contents in the materials they published, they were punished such as closing the newspapers and magazines, having the books confiscated, or not being brought into the country. The Turkish government has also closely followed materials published abroad. While examining the minority press in the Ottoman and Turkish Republics, this article focuses on the Armenian press.

On October 28, 1917, Izvestiia published V.I. Lenin's directive on printing, which articulated his vision for reshaping the printing press as the “inseparable” literary organ of the party. Although Lenin's views on printing and publishing were known to his close associates, this directive outlined a clear process upon which the party was able to base its revolutionary goal of total consolidation, thus reshaping local publishing cultures and determining the fate of the ethnic press during and after the Russian Revolution. The end goal of this process was to create an extensive publishing apparatus, which was subservient to party orthodoxy and homogeneity. This article discusses the consolidation of the ethnic press by highlighting the case of the Tatar printing press during the early Soviet period.

This article investigates the long-term consequences of the printing press in the nineteenth century sub-Saharan Africa on social capital nowadays. Protestant missionaries were the first to import the printing press and to allow the indigenous population to use it. We build a new geocoded dataset locating Protestant missions in 1903. This dataset includes, for each mission station, the geographic location and its characteristics, as well as the printing-, educational-, and health-related investments undertaken by the mission. We show that, within regions close to missions, proximity to a printing press is associated with higher newspaper readership, trust, education, and political participation. Abstract:
Printing cylinder driven by helical gear is the basic requirements of the modern printing press. Helical gear transmission necessarily produces component force in axial. It brings about a small displacement in axial to the cylinder, that is, axial bounce. The axial placement is too small or too large during the printing process, which both will have harmful effects on printed matter. At the same time, the axial playing of the cylinder is one of the important performance standards to determine printing press. The modern high-speed printing press has a higher requirement on mechanic properties and axial bounce. We tested on the cylinders of press and analyzed on the placement of the cylinders in order to effectively master and control the displacement in axial in the case of the printing press running with high-speed. We chose a four-color offset press as the test objects and reasonably selected measurement points on the cylinder shaft end face. We collected vibration signals of the blanket cylinders, impress cylinders and transfer cylinders. Then obtain the placement in axial of the cylinders with quadrature method. Analysis shows that the higher the printing speed, the larger the placement of the same type cylinder in axial is, which shows that the placement of the cylinders in axial has something to do with the printing speed. At the same speed, the blanket cylinder have a larger placement in axial than impress cylinder and transfer cylinder. Which shows that the placement of the cylinders in axial has connection to the cylinder assembly structure. Test data accord well with the actual structure and assembling condition, which can be considered as the theoretical basis to control the placement of cylinder in axial.

Abstract:
Printing machinery’s reliability is one of the most important index parameter and good dynamic characteristics are essential for high speed printing press. The dynamic characteristic is predictable for printing machine with dynamic design. With the complexity of printing technique and printing machine, information, such as load on components is lack, leading to the difficulty of dynamic model solving and further more the dynamic parameters needs to be verified. Firstly, according to the dynamic design method, a dynamic design process based on measuring information for printing machine was put forward. Secondly, on the basis of principle and structure analysis to typical printing machine, dynamic characteristics measurement item and method was determined. With a wallboard of a two-color offset press acting as an example, the utilizing method was illustrated through dynamic modeling, theoretical model analysis, experiment model analysis based on vibration measurement and comparing the theoretical and experimental results. Finally, a Dynamic Design Assistant Platform based Vibration Measurement for Printing Machine was developed and had been used in 10 kinds of printing machine measurement and analysis. The conclusion shows that the tolerance of the theoretical model analysis results and experiment results is allowed. A new approach for new printing machine design and optimal design for existed printing machine is given.

Abstract:
A new testing form was designed, in which the screens having gray scales and some solid blocks were included. The screens consist of gray scales from 0 to 100% of dot coverage, and the solid blocks also have coverage scales from 0 to 100%. Printing experiment was performed, and densities and dot coverage of specific places were measured and recorded. Based on the testing data, density or dot coverage undulation with printing impressions was indicated by curves. Furthermore analysis was taken. Dot gains in the same prints are not constant, which cause that saddle shape in prints. Some reasons from construction of press such as the gap of cylinder, swing of transferring roller and oscillation of oscillating rollers were brought out. Same values of ink presetting can not get the same printing quality in the ink zones which have the same graphic coverage. The traditional press has a long make-ready time in printing running, which can reduce the efficiency of press. Shaft-less technology of inking system is put forward to cut down the make-ready time and to decrease the power consumption. New algorithm research is necessary for ink zone presetting in order to get more precise ink feeding. Some research on the press construction is also important for the press having some inherent defects

AbstractThis article argues that Renaissance print culture appropriated the cultural meanings of the footprint. The potent analogy between the printing press and printing foot informed Reformation debates over Christ’s footprints as objects of devotion and subjects of representation. In sixteenth-century England a model for investigative reading informed by Erasmian humanism was developed in the print projects of George Gascoigne and Edmund Spenser. Experimentation with effects of the press and the material environment of the page culminated in extensive play upon the material and metaphorical sign of the printing foot in Spenser’s “Amoretti.”

The purpose of wet pressing is to remove water by mechanical means to consolidate the web and minimize the energy expended in the dryer section. In this process, paper is compacted and densified to degrees that impact end-use performance. Average density is increased by pressing, which has implications for grades where stiffness is important. The z-direction density gradients can affect printing and converting. Lastly, pressing affects surface quality of paper and its response to printing. Broadly speaking, the final press nip dominates the paper surface roughness and the early press nips affect printing performance.

Greene, Annie. "The pioneers of print in the Ottoman Province of Mosul." Journal of Contemporary Iraq & the Arab World 14, no. 1 (June 1, 2020): 51–68. http://dx.doi.org/10.1386/jciaw_00018_1.

Abstract:
This article examines the emergence of printing and press culture in the Ottoman province of Mosul, arguing that the variety of printed production in Mosul city and Kirkuk was dictated by technological expertise, consumption patterns and cultural-linguistic preferences. Religious institutions like the French Dominicans and the Chaldean Patriarchate, the Ottoman state and wealthy local individuals supported the local press culture in northern Iraq. Printing in Mosul was multilingual, thus the production of Arab cultural modernity and the Nahda (Arab Renaissance) should be reconsidered within a context of several competing languages. In Kirkuk, while the print culture appeared monolingual, the fixed nature of printing hid a multilingual cultural sphere.

Abstract:
Abstract In 1482, Erhard Ratdolt, a prominent German printer in Venice, issued the editio princeps of Euclid’s Elements. Ratdolt experimented with the new technology of printing to overcome the difficulty in arranging geometric diagrams alongside the text. This article examines the materials and techniques that Ratdolt used in his edition of Elements including his use of vellum, gold printing, and illumination for special copies as well as his use of woodcuts, movable type, and metal-cast diagrams. Significantly, the legacy of Ratdolt’s innovations continued almost one hundred years later in subsequent editions of Elements. In 1572, Camillo Francischini printed Federico Commandino’s Latin translation and commentary, and today, there are at least two surviving copies of this edition printed on blue paper. Both printers, Ratdolt and Francischini, used the printing press to produce unique and bespoke books using material and visual cues from luxury objects like illuminated manuscripts. These case studies of Euclid’s Elements brings together the fields of art history, history of the book, and the history of geometry, and analyzes the myriad ways that printers employed the printing press in the early modern period to elevate and modernize ancient, mathematical texts.

Abstract:
The registering precision is one of the most important specifications in printing press. Many factors that may influence the registering precision including the construction of the printing press in design, the assembly precision in manufacturing stage, adjustment in process of operation, the wear and tear of the machine when it is in use, crawl of blanket and extension of sheet are all considered comprehensively. The mathematical models are built up to describe the register error of press. The algorithm of accuracy and precision of sheet-feeding and sheet-transferring is introduced. With the aid of image technology, the coordinates of marks can be obtained automatically, and the registering accuracy and precision can also be calculated.
