Abstract:
There is no doubt about the fact that information and communication technology utilisation (ICT) is a life wire of any school organisation. However, planners and administrators are aware of the contributions that ICT utilisation could make to the enhancement of academic activities of the institutions. The attainment of the goals and objectives of higher institutions of learning required the availability and optimal utilisation of ICT. Based on the foregoing premise, this study examined ICT utilisation as a veritable tool for academic staff effectiveness in Nigerian Polytechnics. The concept and importance of ICT utilisation were critically examined. Challenges associated with ICT utilisation were highlighted, which include unsteady power supply, inadequate funding, poor quality of telecommunication connections, and lack of qualified ICT operators. The study concluded that the contribution of ICT utilisation to the development of entire level of education today make it necessary for the adoption of ICT utilisation by the school authorities, administrators as well as the lecturers in such a way that it easier for the utilisation of application packages (like power point presentation, Microsoft word process, spread sheet and so on), internet application (video conferencing, e-mail, data base, e-learning) and computer hardware facilities (photo copier machine, printing machine, scanners, laptops to mention but a few). This helps to improve the quality of teaching-learning process, academic and administrative effectiveness in institutions. Also, the technological devices of an institution are a major determinant factor in the actualisation of its objectives. The study recommends that proper funding should be provided for the procurement of ICT devices and equipment which are capital intensive.

Abstract:
The sequence in the improvement drive in any discipline is a vital concern. This has become a mindset to printing practitioners. The special consideration accorded some brands of machine is as a result of peculiarities in terms of suitability, affordability, maintenance capability, ease of operation, durability among others. The excitement for better means of achieving printing goals has always prompted manufacturers to develop successive equipment to enhance offset printing practitioners in their daily activities. The aim of the study is to trace, identify and examine the brands of machine in use, and their impact on the practice of offset printing in South West Nigeria with a view to encouraging practitioners for better productivity and sustainability. The objectives of the study are to trace the trends in the technological development of offset printing in the offset printing industry, Identify brands of machines adopted in South West Nigeria, and examine reasons for the use of such brands. The sample size for each study area was selected at random from registered offset lithography printing establishments as follow: Somolu-274, Akure36 and Ibadan-192. Both primary and secondary data were employed. Survey Design was adopted and the data were gathered through structured questionnaire and subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistical tools for analysis. Findings from the study revealed that there were developments in both quantitative and qualitative aspects in the industry. From the quantitative aspect, the acquisition of additional machines, offices/buildings and staff were always on the increase, despite the use of old machines and reliance on on-the-job training of operators. From the qualitative aspect, the hypothesis postulated was tested using chi-square to test significant relationship. The analysis showed that the null-hypothesis was rejected in favor of the alternate hypothesis, implying that although developments were remarkable, it would have been more pronounced if not for the impact of the high significant relationship between the variables as indicated by x2 (4) = 144.289, p = 0.000. The study also revealed that old technology machines are durable, easy to manipulate and maintain, cost effective and affordable. Furthermore, spare parts are always available, operators with little education rely mostly on apprenticeship/on-the-job training. However, lack of surplus fund hindered the procurement of new machines. Some offset printers only adopted digital process as complementary for short runs and print-ondemand purposes, while some held the belief that digital machines are not as durable as offset printing machines. Since new offset machines are costly and not conveniently affordable to printing firms, the study recommended that two, three or more offset firms can embark on collaborative efforts for the procurement of new machines that would enhance better performance in productivity and profitability.

Abstract:
Poor management practices of road transport assets posed a challenge to the sustainable development of the transport system in developing countries like Nigeria. Studies in the past focused mainly on the performance of road construction process. However, few studies have evaluated the effect of the fourth Industrial Revolution (4.0IR) on the road transport assets in developing countries such as Nigeria. The current study aimed at assessing the effect of the 4.0IR towards improving the management practice of road transport assets. Survey instruments were administered to project and facility managers in the Nigerian road construction sector of the economy using a proportionate random sampling technique. Partial least square structural equation modelling was used for data analysis utilising the Warp 7.0 partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) software algorithm. The software calculates p-values with WarpPLS based on non-parametric algorithms, resampling or stable algorithms and thus does not require that the variables to be normally distributed. The study concluded that the 4.0IR drivers have a moderate effect change on the management practice of road transport assets in Nigeria at the moment. The findings imply that management of road assets in Nigeria would moderately improve due to the 4.0IR technologies resulting in transport, safety and general efficiency and effectiveness of road networks in Nigeria. The study identified the 4.0IR drivers to include robotics, mobility, virtual and augmented reality, Internet of things and cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, blockchain, three-dimensional (3D) printing drones that are built with an attached 3D printer (the drone hangs a 3D printing nozzle that has fed plastic, concrete mix or other material from a tube connected to the top of the drone's printing path that precisely plotted by software, for a promised printing accuracy of 0.1 mm) and digital engineering. This study emanated from the government reports and past studies in the area of road transport asset management practice which the study investigated the major causes of poor practices and assessed the effect of the 4.0IR on the practice.

Abstract:
In light of growing interest for three-dimensional printing technology in the cardiovascular community, this study focused on exploring the possibilities of providing training for cardiovascular three-dimensional printing in the context of a relevant international congress and providing considerations on the delivery of such courses. As a second objective, the study sought to capture preferences in relation to three-dimensional printing uses and set-ups from those attending the training session. A survey was administered to n = 30 professionals involved or interested in three-dimensional printing cardiovascular models following a specialised teaching session. Survey results suggest the potential for split training sessions, with a broader introduction for those with no prior experience in three-dimensional printing followed by a more in-depth and hands-on session. All participants agreed on the potential of the technology in all its applications, particularly for aiding decision-making around complex surgical or interventional cases. When exploring setting up an in-house three-dimensional printing service, the majority of participants reported that their centre was already equipped with an in-house facility or expressed a desire that such a facility should be available, with a minority preferring consigning models to an external third party for printing.

Abstract:
The rapid emergence of Industry 4.0 implies that our engineering graduates need to acquire new competences to adapt to the digital transformation. This paper evaluates the benefits of integrating 3D printing and Industry 4.0 into engineering undergraduate programs. Surveys were conducted to gather the feedbacks and views from academics and students. 75% and 86% of the participating students and lecturers, respectively, have heard about Industry 4.0. 63% of the students were exposed to modules with such elements. Tangible 3D-printed models enable visualization of fundamental theories and concepts. Enhanced 3D drawing skills and rapid 3D-printed prototypes can greatly help students study common processing equipment, manufacturing, maintenance, logistics, and operations. Some limitations were identified such as budgeting, lack of knowledge, and difficulty in changing from traditional pedagogy. This paper thus proposes a blended learning model for integrating Industry 4.0 into engineering teaching, which consists of traditional, online learning, and flipped classroom approaches. Implementation of the model can be started off with cross-multidisciplinary collaborations or expert-led training for the instructors, followed by traditional face-to-face teaching and online learning. Flipped classroom is one of the essential components of the model which encourages learning-by-making approaches such as ‘bring your own device’ and ‘do it yourself’. Integrating Industry 4.0 into engineering teaching can create a student-based learning environment, where students are gradually trained to become proactive and lifelong learners who are more conscious of the environment and economy.

Abstract:
Background.Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and about 70% of all cancer deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. The cancer mortality pattern is quite different in Africa compared to other parts of the world. Extensive literature research showed little or no information about the overall deaths attributable to cancer in Nigeria.Aims and Objectives. This study aims at providing data on the patterns of cancer deaths in our center using the hospital and autopsy death registers.Methodology.Demographic, clinical data of patients who died of cancer were extracted from death registers in the wards and mortuary over a period of 14 years (2000–2013).Results.A total of 1436 (4.74%) cancer deaths out of 30287 deaths recorded during the period. The male to female ratio was 1 : 2.2 and the peak age of death was between 51 and 60 years. Overall, breast cancer was responsible for most of the deaths.Conclusion.The study shows that the cancers that accounted for majority of death occurred in organs that were accessible to screening procedures and not necessary for survival. We advise regular screening for precancerous lesions in these organs so as to reduce the mortality rate and burden of cancer.

Abstract:
Appendicitis is the leading cause of surgical admission in most hospitals in Nigeria and the removed appendix, a frequent surgical specimen in most routine histopathological laboratories in Nigeria. The aim of this study is to audit the appendectomy procedures in Benue State University Teaching Hospital. Sixty-two appendices removed for acute appendix in Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, Nigeria middle belt, over an 8-year period were analyzed. Twenty-eight (45%) were found to be normal, while 29 (46%) showed histopathological evidence of acute inflammation. There were 5 (9%) cases of unusual pathologies which include a case each of metastatic adenocarcinoma and chronic granulomatous inflammation (2% each) and 3 (5%) cases of schistosomiasis. The Negative Appendectomy Rate (NAR) was 27% in females compared with 18% in males. Adult (>16 years) represented 29% of the NAR. The overall NAR was 45%. The NAR in this study is considerable higher when compared with existing literature. In a poor resource center like Benue State University Teaching Hospital, due diligence in taking detailed history coupled with good clinical examination cannot be over emphasized. The use of a combination of Total Leukocyte Count (TCC) and C-Reactive Protein (CPR) in every patient may help in reducing NAR, though it’s definitely going to be impossible to eradicate it.

Abstract:
There is a growing call for English as a second language teachers to explore different learning environments and teaching options to spice up the traditional ‘boring’ English language classes. The onus has been on language teachers to discover these innovative platforms and implement same in their classes. It is against this background that the present study presents the prospects and problems of using the SMS on mobile phones for teaching the English language in Nigeria knowing fully well that at least 15.5 million Nigerians of different ages own at least one mobile phone. The study reveals that most English language teachers do not recognise the cheap, exciting and handy nature of the SMS learning environment. The study also discovers that amongst all the network providers in the country, only MTN provides an SMS based ESL class that is mainly focused on grammar tips. The study examines some problems associated with the SMS learning environment; chief amongst them being the restricted text typing environment of SMS and the inability to take pictures for illustrations. However, the study recommends that despite the short comings, the SMS platform still provides an efficient and cheap learning environment.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Teaching and learning are like two composites sides of a coin. While the indispensability of teaching to knowledge and skill acquisition among professionals including nurses is never in doubt, certain teaching methods have been proven to yield more fruitful results than others. This study therefore explored the lived experience of nurse educators regarding teaching methods and the challenges encountered in nursing education institutions in South West Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative inquiry research approach was used. Fifteen nursing educators were purposively selected from three nursing institutions in South West Nigeria with at least one year of teaching experience. Data was collected through semi-structured, in-depth individual interviews with the selected participants. All interview sessions were audio recorded with participants' permission and later transcribed verbatim. Thereafter, the collected data was analyzed using thematic content analysis. RESULTS: The study identified a number of factors that hindering teaching methods that support students learning by nurse educators. Results showed six themes viz: Inadequate preparedness of the students for higher education; Insufficient facilitation skills of the teachers; Misconceptions about teaching practices; Resource constraints; Resistance to change; and Lack of incentives. Further analysis revealed that the dynamic changes occurring in the health care professions, require a radical shift in the way nursing students are taught, to develop them into competent nurses of the future, who are capable of using their skills to solve the health care needs of the populace. CONCLUSIONS: The effective use of teaching methods is the cornerstone of the future of general nursing and nursing practice. Nurses need to be trained with an objective to become skilled and competent through effective teaching and learning by taking into account the diversity of higher education institutions and responding effectively to the needs of nursing educators and nursing students, as well as institutional demands.

Abstract:
BackgroundPerioperative mortality is one of the tools that can help to assess the adequacy of healthcare delivery in a nation. This audit was conducted to determine the 24-hour, 7-day and 30-day perioperative mortality rates and the predictors of mortality in a pediatric surgical cohort.MethodsThis was a prospective study of children whose ages ranged from a few hours to 15 years and who were operated on between May 2019 and April 2020. The primary outcome was to determine the incidence of in-hospital perioperative mortality.ResultsA total of 530 procedures were done in 502 children. Their ages ranged from a few hours to 15 years with a median of 36 months. The 24-hour, 7-day and 30-day mortality rates were 113.2 per 10 000 procedures [95% confidence interval (CI) =40 to 210], 207.6 per 10 000 procedures (95% CI=110 to 320) and 320.8 per 10 000 procedures (95% CI=190 to 470), respectively. Congenital anomalies complicated by postoperative sepsis contributed to death in the majority of cases. The predictors of mortality were neonatal age group [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=19.92, 95% CI=2.32 to 170.37, p=0.006], higher American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status III and above (AOR=21.6, 95% CI=3.05 to 152.91, p=0.002), emergency surgery (AOR=17.1, 95% CI=5.21 to 60.27, p=0.001), congenital anomalies (AOR=12.7, 95% CI=3.37 to 47.52, p=0.001), and multiple surgical procedures (AOR=9.7, 95% CI=2.79 to 33.54, p=0.001).ConclusionPerioperative mortality remains high in our institution.

Abstract:
Background: Cancer is a public health problem worldwide affecting all categories of persons. It is the second common cause of death in developed countries and among the three leading causes of death in developing countries. Objective: To compare the patterns of malignant childhood tumours intwo tertiary hospitals in the north- Western and South western Nigeria. Methods: Retrospective studies of childhood malignancies diagnosedat Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) (Ife Hospital Unit, Ile-Ife and Wesley Guild Hospital Unit, Ilesa, Osun state) were undertaken from January, 2001 to December, 2010. The patterns of childhood cancers inthese hospitals were compared. Results: Four hundred and ten children aged 7 months to 15 years were admitted at AKTH with malignancies of which 236 were males and 174 females with male to female ratio of 1.4:1. At OAUTHC, 568 children aged two months to 15 years were admitted with malignancies over the ten year period. There were 401 males and 167 females, with male to female ratio of 2.4:1. Lymphomas were the commonest type of malignancy in both centers, which accounted for 47.3% and 59.7% at AKTH and OAUTHCrespectively. Retinoblastoma was the second commonest tumour atAKTH constituting 14.9% of all malignancies followed by nephroblastomaand acute leukemias. In contrast, acute leukemias were the second commonest malignancy at OAUTHC accounting for 12.7% of all malignancies followed by retinoblastoma and nephroblastoma. Tumoursof central nervous system were observed to be commoner at AKTH, while bone tumours were commoner at OAUTHC.Conclusion: The pattern of childhood cancer varies rather little betweendifferent regions in Nigeria, with malignant lymphomas being the most common as is the case in most developing countries. However, the findings in this study suggest that there is variation in prevalence of leukemia, CNS and bone tumours in northern and southern Nigeria.Key words: Childhood, malignant tumours, pattern, teaching hospitals,Nigeria

Abstract:
3D printing is a technology that allows manufacturing objects from a virtual model. The field of education has appropriated its use due to its potential to contribute to the teaching-learning process, especially for the education of the visually impaired. Visually impaired people develop their skills through alternative means, mainly using auditory and tactile landmarks as a way of obtaining information. Within the innovative perspectives for education, this study aims to propose a learning tool using 3D printing technology to build a board game employed for the use of unplugged programming language in the education of children visually impaired for their development of logical thinking skills. The learning tool production started in its modeling performed using specific software that generated 3D virtual models. Later, these files were sent to a 3D printer for printing, using the fused filament fabrication, originating physical copies of modeled objects. Then, the objects, now printed, went through a finishing process for their completion. Part of the game components received braille indications accordingly to the proposed in this study. As a result, we obtained a game prototype adapted for the visually impaired, made through 3D printing, with the potential to assist in the teaching-learning process.

Abstract:
The objective of the study was to examine the prevailing teaching style and educational philosophies of teachers in Kano metropolis, Nigeria, and to determine whether there was a relationship between the two variables. Descriptive survey research design was used in the conduct of the study. The population of the study consisted of a sample of 124 secondary school teachers in Kano metropolis. Robert Leahy Philosophic Inventory (1995) was adapted as data collection instrument. The data obtained were analyzed using percentage, mean, t-test and ANOVA. Findings of the study reveal that lecture method was the most frequently used teaching method by teachers while essentialism was the predominating educational philosophy of teachers. A moderate positive relationship exists between teachers’ preferred teaching style and their educational philosophies but no statistically significant difference was found in the teaching styles of the male and female teachers in Kano Metropolis. Similarly, there was no significant difference in teachers’ teaching styles with respect to their qualifications. Among other things, the study recommends continuous professional development of teachers through regular in-service training in order to equip them with modern and contemporary educational philosophies and teaching styles.

Abstract:
This paper examines language teaching and learning theories in a bid to consider evolving and appropriate approaches and methods for efficient teaching and learning English as a second language in Nigeria. While traditional approaches do provide a solid foundation for effective language teaching, they do not always address students' situational and current needs. Hence, the study reveals that strategies and methods are evolving especially, in this hi-tech age, to meet such additional needs. Since no one theory or method is the best, the study recommends a principled eclectic approach for the effective and functional teaching and learning of English in Nigeria. It also suggests processes that could enhance teaching and motivate learning in the ESL classroom.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background This is a cross-sectional retrospective study on survival of amalgam restoration in a Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. There has been no study on this particular subject in Nigeria despite the fact that there is an alarming increase in dental caries and the preferred choice of treatment for over 5 decades has been amalgam restoration. Materials and methods It is a retrospective study of dental records of the dental center over a period of 12 years setting certain criteria that must be met by such records. Those that fulfilled these criteria were then recalled for examination. Results Two hundred and ninety-four amalgam restorations were placed with primary placements forming 75.69 of all restorations carried out while replacements were 24.31%. Fractured restoration was the commonest cause of failure of restoration accounting for 66% of all replacement. Ditching formed 15.5%, recurrent caries 11.6%, dislodged restoration 5.3%. While cervical overhanging amalgam was 1.6%. 25%, 50%, 75% cumulative failure rate occurs at 4.2 and 6.9 and 9.2 years respectively. While at the same time 73.2 and 19.2% of the restorations lasted for 5 and 10 years respectively. Conclusion Primary placement is the preoccupation of the dentist's in Nigeria while replacement rate is low. However, while recurrent caries is the major cause of restoration failure in economies country in Europe and America, it is not the case in this study. How to cite this article Olaleye AO. Abstract:
This document is a report on developing processes to encourage flow of the graphic image in kilnformed glass. It is also a description and reflection on a body of artworks in glass in which new visual qualities were exposed through a mishap and turned into an aesthetic choice. The research links 2D print approaches to 3D printing and their integration in cast glass. It updates the author’s practice-based PhD research, a study that utilizes glass printing, cutting and fusing processes to combine the printed image within the glass object. The outcomes of the study can be organized under two approaches that have been developed, one appropriate to practical workshop teaching, and the other for the conceptualization and fabrication of new personal artworks.

Abstract:
Background: Congenital anomalies of the central nervous system (CACNS) are birth defects of the physical structure of the brain or spinal cord that occur during intrauterine growth. The purpose of study was to obtain the incidence, types and risk factors of congenital anomalies of the central nervous system in the 2 teaching hospitals in Enugu, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: This was a hospital based observational study carried out on infants delivered at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) and Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Enugu during the periods of January 2013 and December 2018. Diagnosis of neurological congenital anomaly was made through clinical examination by a pediatrician and a neurosurgeon. Stillborns were excluded. Results: During the study period, 15,820 were delivered in the 2 teaching hospitals, out of which 79 infants had CACNS, which gave an incidence of 0.5%. Neural tube defect was the most common neurological anomaly. A significant number of the mothers took herbal concoctions during pregnancy. About one-fifth of the neurological anomalies were diagnosed prenatally. Conclusion: This study showed an incidence of CACNS of 0.5% in the two teaching hospitals in Enugu, South East Nigeria. Neural tube defect was the most common anomaly.
