In 1971, Picasso pulled sixty-six out of 347etchings first executed in 1968 for an edition of Spanish writer Rojas's Celestina. While the complete group of prints, known as the Suite 347, has been discussed in the context of Picasso's late work, few have considered how the location of the sixty-six prints in Rojas's text affects their reading. Understanding where Picasso actually inserted the prints into the text sheds light on the play between narrative and image that Picasso intended when binding his etchings with the Rojas story. Considering the prints as part of a book provides a more complete context for understanding the imagery revealing them to be depictions done to rival Rojas's own narrative strategies.

Abstract In this article we compare Dutch penny prints with Spanish Aleluyas, focusing on three specific functions of this premodern mass medium: popularising and adapting theatre plays; standardising (folk/fairy) tales; adapting and popularising literary classics. Via these functions we address the discrepancies between the two countries considering the materiality of the penny prints, the growth of the production, but also the transition from a predominantly religious, towards a more profane content. Striking was the lack of educative and edifying initiatives in Spain in contrast to the Dutch ideological strategies. We observed some interesting similarities as well. Although in both countries penny prints often conformed to current ideologies and institutions, there were instances in which penny prints and aleluyas were used as instruments of social satire or resistance. A few similar strange twists in the adaptations of literary classics, seem to suggest some form of transnational exchange or at least imitation.

This paper explores the representation of political powers in the front-page illustrations of Early Modern Spanish newspapers. The knowledge about Early Modern European journalism has undergone a remarkable development in recent decades: however, research on the form of the first newspapers is scarce. The paper presents a corpus of 162 news pamphlets and gazettes published in Seville between 1618 and 1635. An analysis follows considering the presence of engravings on the cover page and their classification. This insight leads to the conclusion that the image did not play a decisive role to draw the attention of readers, even in sensationalist news pamphlets. The illustration is used not to present the events narrated but to stress the genre of the print; about half of the corpus prints have a cover engraving that reproduces a coat of arms, associated with the monarchical power in two thirds of the news sheets: Spanish journalism experienced a growing officialization, prior to the appearance of the first official newspaper of the kingdom, Gazeta Nueva (1661). Also, a small group of news sheets with ecclesiastical or nobiliary coat of arms reveals the interest of local powers in the flourishing of the journalistic market

ABSTRACTThe history of the Spanish musical press in the eighteenth century has usually been interpreted as an ongoing struggle against a narrow and underdeveloped market. Print itself has been seen as a superior technology that helps to secure stability and clarity of the musical text. In this light, José de Torres, prestigious organist and composer, music director of the Spanish Chapel Royal from 1720 and owner of an important musical press, has appeared to be a heroic modernizing figure. This article challenges this received image, underlining the effectiveness of censorship and the control of individual initiatives in the field of music publishing in early eighteenth-century Spain. This is demonstrated by newly discovered documents concerning a lawsuit brought against Torres, who owned a royal printing privilege from 1700 until his death in 1738, by Francisco Díaz de Guitián, who wanted to establish a music press of his own. Several musicians acted as witnesses, giving a detailed view of how the music press worked at the time, notably how the approbations customarily given by established musicians on behalf of music treatises intended for publication were used to promote or block a career. Based on these new insights, a general study of all the known prints by the Imprenta de Música is presented in a broader editorial, political and cultural context.

The Spanish National Library’s Memoria Hispánica project aims to provide networked access to a digital database, the Biblioteca Nacional Digita, including every item in its collection. The first phase of this project is scheduled to take place between 1996 and 1998. This follows an earlier project, the Sistema Integrado de Información Heráldica, which involved digitising the text and images of a major work on heraldry. Two ongoing projects comprise the production of an optical disc of Spanish portraits in the library’s collections, the Iconografía Hispana, and of a CD-ROM documenting an exhibition, mounted by the library from its collections, of prints and drawings by Goya. In both cases, the projects are being implemented and funded by external bodies who expect to recoup the costs from sales. It is likely that the Memoria Hispánica project will be funded in much the same way.

Care pathways are excellent tools for quality management in health care concerning the standardization of care processes, as they promote organized and efficient patient care established on evidence-based practice. The implementation of a care pathway project at any health-care setting means a change of the organizational culture. E-pathways (electronic pathways) are strategic resources in order to get the successful implementation of a care pathway project. The concept of e-pathway is recent enough and there are some different experiences worldwide. In 2000, the first electronic pathways were implemented at Hospital de Mataró, in Barcelona, Spain. The benefits of using e-pathways (Eira Healthcare Server) are very clear at Hospital de Mataró: immediate records with no transcriptions, information in the palm of your hand, no prints, and rigour and reliability. Another recent and interesting experience is the development and introduction of e-pathways at Hospital General de l'Hospitalet, in Barcelona, Spain, using an SAP integrated health-care solution. The strategy planning of hospital managers should take into account the need and priority of any pathway project linked to e-pathways. Some experiences in Spain have proven that we do really need electronic support for pathways. Electronic pathways are a basic support and should not be postponed when implementing care pathways.

Documentation of Spain’s artistic heritage can be found in many places throughout the country. Primary sources are scattered in different archives, including general historical, and regional and municipal, as well as ecclesiastical, military, family, and academy archives. Publications essential to the study of Spanish culture, and some drawings, prints, and photographs, can be found in libraries, notably but by no means exclusively the Biblioteca Nacional. The growth of national awareness of the nation’s artistic heritage can be traced in books and other documents, from the activities of Philip II in the 16th century, to the introduction of photography and the development of its role in recording, multiplying images of, affirming, and popularising, a patrimony worthy of preservation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to show the reception and circulation of the Corpus Iuris Civilis the New Spain (Mexico) during the XVI and XVII centuries. It analyzes the importance of the Roman law as a part of the phenomenon of legal reception in the Spanish America. It studies the readings, comments and censorships of the different editions of these books, which were introduced extensively since the first decades of the American conquest. In the recent years, the Latin American historiography has analyzed the reception of the ius commune in the Spanish colonies, but it appears to give more priority to other legal sources as laws and customs. As a result of this point of view, it has been forgotten the knowledge contained in the legal books. In this research, my main sources are the books preserved in the Mexican National Library. The choice of the materials is due to it preserves the prints of some of the major libraries during this period (university, seminars and religious colleges). In order to achieve this objective, I analyze my period according to the Robert Darnton’s communication circuit. This methodological model focuses on the role of authors, publishers, printers, distributors and readers in the process of production, distribution and consumption of the books.

Abstract:
This dissertation uses the seventeenth-century Spanish plays which employ an array of mythological stories of Theseus to analyze the Early Modern ideology of the Prince. The consideration of the different rulers in these plays highlights different aspects of these sovereigns such as their honor, prudence, valor, and self-control. Many of these princes fall well short of the ideal explained in the comedia and in the writings of the arbitristas. By employing the hylomorphic theory in which everything can exist in either its matter or its form, it is shown that in order to have the form of a prince, rulers must act in certain ways to reach that ideal or perfect state. Many princes in the plays, however, at least at certain times, only have the matter of a prince and fall short of the form. By drawing from mythological theories which describe the need for a mediation or an alleviation of an irresolvable contradiction within a society, it is shown that despite the imperfections of the flawed princes that are put on stage, these plays still defend and glorify the monarchical system in which they were created as well as the specific imperfect princes. The six plays examined here in which Theseus is a primary protagonist are El laberinto de Creta, Las mujeres sin hombres, and El vellocino de oro by Lope de Vega; Los tres mayores prodigios by Calderón de la Barca; El labyrinto de Creta by Juan Bautista Diamante; and Amor es más laberinto by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Juan de Guevara. These plays span a large portion of the seventeenth century and although the authors wrote some of them for the corrales, they created others to be performed before the court.

Translation has become a key, albeit hidden factor in the success of international news as a marketable commodity and one that is not overtly recognised by journalists. However, despite the important socio-political role played by translation in the global circulation of news, general principles governing processes of translation in its production have received scant attention from both Media and Translation Studies researchers The core to this study is to explore the complex set of processes that occur in the translation of political news, and to discover what exactly happens at various points in regard to who translates, what is translated, where it is translated and by whom it is translated. A further goal is to ascertain the extent to which trained competent translators are involved, as opposed to linguistically competent journalists, or, if that is not the case, whether indeed the former should be involved in processes of news translation. From a translation perspective the study explores the practice of newswriters complying with common journalistic strategies such as simplification and reframing to suit the needs of their readership for the maintenance of dominant political or cultural ideologies. It also examines the extent to which disregard for, and removal from, original context, as well as over- or under-emphasis of particular terms or phrases actually happens in translated news texts in the Spanish-English context, and the effect that this may have at the point of reception by the new readership. By comparing three sub-corpora of journalistic source and target texts through critical discourse analysis, and by taking into account translation processes through ethnographic research in international news outlets, the ultimate goal is to identify the causes that can trigger textual manipulation. Using three case studies comprising political news events that were originally reported in Spanish at the source of the events, and which were subsequently reported in UK and US national newspapers, the study investigates the extent to which transformations occur through translation in the representation of political news events, how they might occur, who is involved in the process and what effect any transformations might have on readers.

Spanish composer María Teresa Prieto (1895-1982) belongs to a group of Spanish exiles who left their country for Mexico as a result of the Spanish Civil War. She arrived in Mexico in 1936 and developed her compositional career in there. Her first composition after her arrival in the new country was the song cycle Seis Melodías, a work that includes six songs with poetry by Ricardo de Alcázar, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico García Lorca, and María Teresa Prieto herself. This document analyzes each one of the songs, both musically and poetically, as well as the relationship between music and text. Seis Melodías' structural organization as a cycle is very particular, since Prieto organized the cycle in pairs—namely I and II, III and IV, and V and VI—each group with strong poetic and thematic unity. The songs belonging to this cycle, present the duality of being independent and dependent at the same time, given that each song stands by itself, but together they create a meta-narrative that progresses from hope to desolation, not as a political statement, but as a homage to, as well as a lament, for the Spanish land and freedom. The cyclical nature of this work is accomplished by Prieto through motivic unity, a clear harmonic plan, and poetic relationships between the songs.

El presente trabajo busca cuantificar la importancia socioeconómica de siete rasgos fonéticos (seseo, yeísmo, aspiración de /s/, aspiración de /x/, asibilación de /ʝ/, asibilación de /r/ y velarización de /n/), cuya presencia o ausencia sirve para caracterizar veinticuatro dialectos del idioma español. Para ello se efectúa un análisis de regresión por mínimos cuadrados que sirve para calcular “precios hedónicos” asociados con tales rasgos fonéticos. El resultado es +que las tres características más significativas que parecen operar como signos de un ingreso per cápita más bajo son el seseo, la aspiración de /x/ y la asibilación de /r/. El primero de tales rasgos parece ser también significativo como marcador sociolingüístico cuando limitamos nuestro análisis al caso de España, en tanto que la asibilación de /r/ mantiene su significación cuando restringimos nuestras observaciones al caso de Colombia.
This paper tries to quantify the socioeconomic importance of seven phonetic characteristics (seseo, yeismo, /s/-aspiration, /x/-aspiration, /ʝ/-assibilation, /r/-assibilation, and /n/-velarization) whose presence or absence allows distinguishing among twenty-four Spanish dialects. In order to accomplish this goal, we perform a least-square regression analysis to calculate “hedonic prices” for the abovementioned characteristics. The result is that the three more significant characteristics, which seem to operate as signs of a lower per-capita income, are seseo, /x/-aspiration and /r/-assibilation. The first of those characteristics keeps its statistical significance as a sociolinguistic marker when we restrict our analysis to the case of Spain, while /r/-assibilation keeps its statistical significance when we restrict our database to Colombian observations.

This thesis focuses on the study of 'graphic aesthetic' of the printed book and its use as a communication strategy in the marketing process and in the receiving of the printed work. The study focuses on the product of the narrative fiction printed book, as this subject represent the largest share of the publishing business. The study period stood since 2010, so it coincides with the beginning of a problem that through a series of internal and external factors to the publishing sector, they mark a turning point in the Spanish publishing sector. This thesis research might be called “field work”, as it has been applied qualitative research methodology that is structured around a broad framework, which has facilitated the observation, from a transversal perspective, of the workflow and the technical communication between the publishing processes, specifically in the theme of narrative fiction.
Aquesta tesi es focalitza en l'estudi de 'l'estètica gràfica' del llibre imprès i en la seva utilització com a estratègia de comunicació en el procés de comercialització i recepció de l'obra impresa. L'estudi se centra en el producte del llibre imprès de ficció narrativa, per representar aquesta temàtica el percentatge més important del negoci editorial. El període d'estudi se situa des del 2010, per coincidir amb l'inici d'una problemàtica que, a través d'una sèrie de factors interns i externs al sector editorial, marquen un punt d'inflexió en el sector editorial espanyol. Aquesta investigació la podríem denominar “tesi de camp”, ja que s'ha aplicat una metodologia d'investigació qualitativa que s'estructura al voltant d'un ampli marc teòric, el qual ha facilitat l'observació, des d'una perspectiva transversal, del flux de treball i de la comunicació tècnica entre els processos editorials, específicament en la temàtica de ficció narrativa.
Esta tesis se focaliza en el estudio de la 'estética gráfica' del libro impreso y su utilización como estrategia de comunicación en el proceso de comercialización y recepción de la obra impresa. El estudio se centra en el producto del libro impreso de ficción narrativa, por representar esta temática el porcentaje más importante del negocio editorial. El período de estudio se sitúa desde 2010, por coincidir con el inicio de una problemática que, a través de una serie factores internos y externos al sector editorial, marcan un punto de inflexión en el sector editorial español. A esta investigación podríamos denominarla “tesis de campo”, pues se ha aplicado una metodología de investigación cualitativa que se estructura alrededor de un amplio marco teórico, el cual ha facilitado la observación, desde una perspectiva transversal, sobre el flujo de trabajo y la comunicación técnica entre los procesos editoriales, específicamente en la temática de ficción narrativa.

Société ”iconique” par excellence, les Provinces-Unies au XVIIe siècle sont un espace où la représentation graphique envahit le quotidien. Parallèlement, le mariage est une institution au cœur d’un processus de réhabilitation et de cristallisation confessionnelle de dispositions dogmatiques et disciplinaires. Il constitue en outre une expérience anthropologique fondamentale, dont chacun fait l’expérience, comme acteur ou spectateur. Dans cette perspective, les images du mariage innervent toute la culture visuelle de la société néerlandaise et sont au croisement d’enjeux sociaux, religieux et politiques, perceptibles à différentes échelles, par la symbolique qu’elles mettent en jeu et les usages sociaux qui en sont faits. Comment les différences confessionnelles s’y articulent-elles ? Comment les distinctions sociales s’y manifestent-elles ? Quels bénéfices symboliques les usages métaphoriques visuels du mariage permettent-ils d’obtenir pour les acteurs sociaux ? Enfin comment ces images fonctionnent-elles vis-à-vis du lecteur-spectateur ? A travers un corpus de sources très divers (livres ou brochures illustrés, feuilles volantes, mais aussi peintures ou médailles), la thèse répond à ces questions en examinant successivement comment les images accompagnent les discours prescriptifs sur le mariage, la façon dont elles sont mobilisées lors des noces des élites urbaines et lors de la célébration des noces princières, mais aussi comment elles permettent de donner métaphoriquement corps au lien entre le croyant et Dieu ou, paradoxalement, à celui entre le Prince d’Orange et la Patrie, dans un système politique revendiqué comme une République
"Iconic" society par excellence, the United Provinces in the seventeenth century is a place where images play a tremendous role in daily life. Meanwhile, marriage is an institution at the heart of a rehabilitation process and of a differentiation process of confessional identities involving dogmatic and disciplinary provisions. It is also a fundamental anthropological experience, experienced by everybody in the society, be it as actor or spectator. In this perspective, the matrimonial images pervade the whole visual culture of Dutch society and are at the crossroads of social, religious and political issues, at different scales, through the symbolics they involve and the social uses they are submitted to. How are confessional differences articulated to them? How are social distinctions manifested? What symbolic benefits do social actors get out of visual metaphors of marriage? Finally, how do these images interact with the reader-viewer? Through a diverse corpus of sources (illustrated books or pamphlets, single-leaf engravings, but also paintings and medals), the thesis addresses these questions by examining successively how images accompany prescriptive discourses on marriage, how they are involved in the urban elites weddings and during wedding festivities for princes, but also how they can metaphorically embody the link between the believer and God, or, paradoxically, that between the Prince of Orange and the Fatherland, in a political system claimed to be a Republic

Sein Bestehen über mehr als sieben Jahrzehnte und seine offizielle feierliche Verleihung hat durchgehend die Aufmerksamkeit des chilenischen literarischen Feldes erregt und bot im gleichen Zuge einen öffentlicher Anlass, den Wert der Literatur auf verschiedenen Ebenen neu zu denken und zu diskutieren. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist, ausgehend von dieser vielseitigen Diskussion eine Analyse der Inhalte und Grundlagen der Debatte über den Stellenwert von Literatur und von SchriftstellerInnen sowie deren Veränderungen in Chile vorzunehmen. Die Arbeit ist diachronisch angelegt und basiert auf der Sammlung und Kategorisierung offizieller Berichte, individueller Aussagen und öffentlicher Debatten, die alljährlich rund um die Vergabe des Nationalpreises publik werden. Die Ergebnisse der Forschungsarbeit zeigen, dass seit den 1940er Jahren in Chile Literatur tendenziell anhand der politisch-ethischen Position der AutorInnen astatt der Ästhetik der Texte bewertet wurde. Das heißt, in den meisten Fällen wurde ein Autor anhand seines gesellschaftlichen Engagements anstatt der Qualität seiner Texte ausgewählt. Dieser Sachverhalt erklärt sich durch die große Bedeutung, die der chilenische Staat bis heute als Plattform für Finanzierung, Ausbildung und Förderung künstlerischer Werdegänge, inne hat.
The present dissertation investigates the Chilean National Prize for Literature ("Premio Nacional de Literatura"), founded in 1942, which has been awarded to 48 male and 4 female authors to date. Its existence for more than seven decades and the solemnity of the official award ceremonies has attracted the attention of the Chilean literary field, offering a public occasion and forum to rethink and discuss the value of literature on different levels. The main objective of this research is to present and analyze the arguments that were used in this context to explain why writers and literature are important. The dissertation is diachronic and based on the collection and categorization of official reports, individual statements, and public debates, which were held annually around the awarding of the national prize between 1942 and 2014. The results of this investigation show that, since the 1940s, the arguments used to talk about the importance and value of literature tended to give more importance to the political-ethical profile of the writers, rather than an esthetic dimension. This means that in most of the cases writers were valued for their social engagement rather than the quality of their books. This has happened because of the State’s importance both as financial source for Chilean writers and as network for the development of their intellectual and artistic careers.
La presente investigación está dedicada al Premio Nacional de Literatura en Chile, fundado el año 1942 y que, hasta el año 2014, condecoró a 48 escritores y 4 escritoras. Su fundación hace más de 7 décadas, y su entrega y ceremonia oficiales han logrado concentrar año a año la atención del medio literario chileno, ofreciendo de paso una instancia pública y periódica donde discutir y reflexionar en torno al valor de la literatura y los escritores. El objetivo de esta investigación es, a partir de la organización y análisis de estas discusiones, presentar los argumentos que han fundado un discurso sobre la importancia de la literatura en Chile, y explicar cómo es que esos fundamentos se han transformado. La estructura de este trabajo es diacrónica y se basa en la exposición y categorización de los motivos recogidos en reportes oficiales, declaraciones de los escritores y la diversidad de artículos de prensa surgidos a propósito de la entrega del Premio Nacional. Los resultados de esta pesquisa informan que en el medio cultural chileno desde los años ’40 en adelante los criterios de valoración de lo literario tendieron a privilegiar la dimensión político-ética de los escritores, antes que la estética; es decir, que en la mayoría de los casos se les valoró por su compromiso social, antes que por la calidad de sus obras. Esto, a su vez, se ha explicado por la importancia que el Estado ha tenido hasta el día de hoy como plataforma de financiamiento, formación y acción para las carreras artísticas y literarias en Chile.

The subject of the intervention, a curious example of Italian-Spanish translingualism of the late 16th Century, the tragedy La Reyna Matilda, written in Naples in Spanish by an Italian writer, Giovanni Domenico Bevilacqua, secretary of the Prince of Conca, Matteo di Capua, and preserved in a single, very rare Neapolitan edition of 1597. It necessarily precedes a brief overview of the other few previously printed works by the author, all in Italian, including the renown octave-rhyme translation of the De raptu Proserpinae by Claudiano. Set in the city of Tarragona at the time of Reconquista, the fabula ficta is characterized by the contamination of tragic plot and novelistic themes, the representation and exaltation of Spanish values and customs, with some reflections of contemporary Neapolitan reality, the pietistic and edifying motivations. Through detailed findings, both formal and intertextual, the analysis focuses, in particular, on the debts that the tragedy has, even before the contemporary Spanish developments of the genre, towards the 16th Century Italian tragic grammar, along the entire arc of its codification, from Trissino’s Sofonisba to Tasso’s Re Torrismondo.

Among the manuscripts in Italian kept in the National Library of Vienna, a comedy in prose of Spanish derivation has recently come to light, hitherto neglected by theatrological and Hispanistic studies. The title page of the booklet declares at the beginning the nature of the content with a laconic "La forza del naturale translated from Spanish », which identifies the text as a translation and revision of La fuerza del natural by Agustín Moreto and Jerónimo de Cáncer (perhaps with the collaboration of Juan de Matos Fragoso), probably composed between 1644 and 1654 and printed for the first time in 1661. Where and when was written the text passed down by the Viennese witness? Was it imported from Italy or written beyond the Alps? Finally, is it possible to trace the exact hypotext starting from the twenty sources known today of the Spanish comedy? This study answers these questions and sheds light on the adaptation techniques that emerged from the comparison between the Italian text and its Spanish hypotext, also by taking into account the elements relating to music distributed throughout the comedy: dances, singing and musical instruments on stage.

The collector and independent scholar Emilio Cueto provides a historical inventory of seventeen graphic art images depicting Cuba, printed during the late Spanish colonial period (1762–1898). These images—primarily authored by Dutch, English, French, and German, not Spanish or Cuban artists—became the most widely circulated visual representations of the island, particularly the capital of Havana. Despite their fanciful and often inaccurate character, these prints depicted the landscape, architecture, people, and customs of the island. They became part of a well-known visual repertoire that fixed Cuba as an exotic tropical location in the global imagination. As Cueto underlines, “It was through engravings and lithographs that Cuba first became known both inside the island and abroad. Colonial Cuba was defined by its prints.”

In a comparative perspective between Spanish and Italian literature, it is considered a possible intertextual dialogue between Lazarillo de Tormes and the figure of the medium giant Margutte, proposed by Luigi Pulci in his Morgante (published between 1478 and 1483). This figure is actually examined as it appears in the Spanish translation of Pulci's work by Jerónimo de Aunés. This translation is divided into two volumes, both published in Valencia, the first in 1533 by the printer Francisco Díaz Romano (canti from I to XVII of the Italian original); the second in 1535 by the printer Nicolás Durán de Salvanyach (canti from the XVIII to the XXV). With regard to the second volume, which includes Margutte's episode, there are no modern editions and therefore I used a its facsimile. My research tries to highlight some points of contact between Lazarillo and the translation of Aunés, both at content and linguistic level. Therefore, this study also tends to integrate the corpus of literary knowledge of the anonymous author of Lazarillo.

Abstract:
This paper is about a didactic action model named VIQTORIA that intervenes in the process of pluricultural competence acquisition. This work aims to characterize how the postulates of the VIQTORIA model are fulfilled on printed and digital learning systems commonly used in Spanish as a Foreign Language teaching. In order to achieve that, five criteria support the creation of a corpus that classifies 10 learning systems into two categories. The systems are characterized using a diagnostic tool composed of 338 items grouped in 60 parameters, which are distributed in 9 blocks. These blocks capture the four postulates of VIQTORIA: the qualification of the competition, the structuring of the thematic core, the didactic iteration and the operativization of the skills acquisitions device, as well as the constructs that operationalize the pluricultural competence: the Sociocultural Proximity and the Linguistic Posture. The quantitave nature of the diagnostic tool favors the triangulation of results. However, this work is part of a broader heuristic investigation in which the emergence of theory is predominant. Even though the results suggest a considerable room for improvement, the systems analysed, by their digital nature, are involved in constant evolution which could lead to them overcoming the limitations of the traditional teaching-learning paradigm.
