Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to introduce an information and communication technology (ICT) artifact that uses text mining to support the innovative and standardized assessment of professional competences within the validation of prior learning (VPL). Assessment means comparing identified and documented professional competences against a standard or reference point. The designed artifact is evaluated by matching a set of curriculum vitae (CV) scraped from LinkedIn against a comprehensive model of professional competence. Design/methodology/approach A design science approach informed the development and evaluation of the ICT artifact presented in this paper. Findings A proof of concept shows that the ICT artifact can support assessors within the validation of prior learning procedure. Rather the output of such an ICT artifact can be used to structure documentation in the validation process. Research limitations/implications Evaluating the artifact shows that ICT support to assess documented learning outcomes is a promising endeavor but remains a challenge. Further research should work on standardized ways to document professional competences, ICT artifacts capture the semantic content of documents, and refine ontologies of theoretical models of professional competences. Practical implications Text mining methods to assess professional competences rely on large bodies of textual data, and thus a thoroughly built and large portfolio is necessary as input for this ICT artifact. Originality/value Following the recent call of European policymakers to develop standardized and ICT-based approaches for the assessment of professional competences, an ICT artifact that supports the automatized assessment of professional competences within the validation of prior learning is designed and evaluated.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to synthesize prior user-centered research to develop and present a generalized framework for evaluating visual, i.e. both image and video digital libraries. The primary objectives include comprehensively examining the current state of visual digital library research to: develop a generalized framework applicable for designing user-centered evaluations of visual digital libraries; identify influential experimental factors warranting assessment evaluation as part of specific contexts; and provide examples of applied methods that have been used in research, demonstrating notable findings. Design/methodology/approach – The framework presented in the present study depicts a set of user-centered methodological considerations and examples, synthesized from a review of prior research that provides significant understanding of users and uses of visual information. Findings – Primary components for digital library evaluation, pertaining to user, interaction, system and domain and topic, and their implications for interactive research are presented. Methods, examples and discussion are presented for each primary evaluation component of the framework. Practical implications – Previously applied evaluations and their significance are described and presented as part of the developed framework, providing the importance of each component for practical application in future research and development of interactive visual digital libraries. Originality/value – Visual digital libraries warrant individual assessment, apart from other types of digital collections, as they offer users more ways to retrieve and interact with collection items. The present study complements prior digital library evaluation research by demonstrating the need for a separate framework due to variations influenced by visual information and reporting on evaluations from different perspectives.

Abstract:
A prospective study of 29 patients with diabetic neuropathy and 47 nondiabetic patients with tarsal tunnel syndrome were evaluated with computer-assisted neurosensory testing at three sites on the foot. The sensitivity and specificity of one-point static touch thresholds for identifying the presence of large fiber axonal loss was done using the calculated thresholds for monofilaments derived from their markings. The sensitivity for one-point static touch in identifying axonal loss was 33% for the 5.07, 38% for the 4.93, 50% for the 4.17, and 60% for the 4.08 monofilament-equivalent, with a specificity of 100% at each level. Therefore, one-point static touch testing, even using monofilaments thinner than 5.07, has a high percentage of false-negative results in identifying patients with axonal loss. Abstract:
Hartmann’s procedure is the gold standard surgical intervention in a variety of emergencies. Hartmann's Reversal is a complex procedure and has high rates of intra-operative and post-operative complications. There are no clear guidelines or recommendations for pre-operative evaluation of the remnant colorectal pouch prior to restoration of intestinal continuity. We present two patients who underwent Hartmann reversal. In both cases, during pre-operative endoscopic evaluation of the Hartmann colorectal pouch, a stricture was incorrectly thought to be the pouch’s blind end and the anastomosis was formed proximal to that stricture. In case 1, a partial obstruction developed that was successfully treated with endoscopic balloon dilatation. In case 2, a complete obstruction occurred, requiring emergent re-operation with formation of a bypass around the stricture. Surgeons and gastroenterologists should be aware of this diagnostic pitfall, and consider pre-operative evaluation that includes both endoscopic and radiologic evaluation in patients being considered for reversal.

Abstract:
Abstract The evaluation of children for cochlear implantation requires a multidisciplinary effort among several groups of professionals. Given the recent trend towards very early identification of hearing loss, clinicians have begun to evaluate these children and make intervention recommendations in the first few months of life. In addition to an accurate audiological assessment, a search for the etiology of the hearing loss as well as associated medical conditions is critical and frequently affects the management paradigm. The evaluation usually requires a number of studies, including imaging of the temporal bones and brain, electrocardiograms, genetic testing, and careful review of medical records. The timely identification, and management of, confounding otological problems such as otitis externa and otitis media is frequently needed. This presentation will focus on an otologist's perspective in the multidisciplinary evaluation prior to the implantation process.

Full text
Abstract:
Calibration is the rate-determining step in every molecular clock analysis and, hence, considerable effort has been expended in the development of approaches to distinguish good from bad calibrations. These can be categorized into a priori evaluation of the intrinsic fossil evidence, and a posteriori evaluation of congruence through cross-validation. We contrasted these competing approaches and explored the impact of different interpretations of the fossil evidence upon Bayesian divergence time estimation. The results demonstrate that a posteriori approaches can lead to the selection of erroneous calibrations. Bayesian posterior estimates are also shown to be extremely sensitive to the probabilistic interpretation of temporal constraints. Furthermore, the effective time priors implemented within an analysis differ for individual calibrations when employed alone and in differing combination with others. This compromises the implicit assumption of all calibration consistency methods, that the impact of an individual calibration is the same when used alone or in unison with others. Thus, the most effective means of establishing the quality of fossil-based calibrations is through a priori evaluation of the intrinsic palaeontological, stratigraphic, geochronological and phylogenetic data. However, effort expended in establishing calibrations will not be rewarded unless they are implemented faithfully in divergence time analyses.

Abstract:
The Bayesian method of phylogenetic inference often produces high posterior probabilities (PPs) for trees or clades, even when the trees are clearly incorrect. The problem appears to be mainly due to large sizes of molecular datasets and to the large-sample properties of Bayesian model selection and its sensitivity to the prior when several of the models under comparison are nearly equally correct (or nearly equally wrong) and are of the same dimension. A previous suggestion to alleviate the problem is to let the internal branch lengths in the tree become increasingly small in the prior with the increase in the data size so that the bifurcating trees are increasingly star-like. In particular, if the internal branch lengths are assigned the exponential prior, the prior mean μ 0 should approach zero faster than but more slowly than 1/ n , where n is the sequence length. This paper examines the usefulness of this data size-dependent prior using a dataset of the mitochondrial protein-coding genes from the baleen whales, with the prior mean fixed at μ 0 =0.1 n −2/3 . In this dataset, phylogeny reconstruction is sensitive to the assumed evolutionary model, species sampling and the type of data (DNA or protein sequences), but Bayesian inference using the default prior attaches high PPs for conflicting phylogenetic relationships. The data size-dependent prior alleviates the problem to some extent, giving weaker support for unstable relationships. This prior may be useful in reducing apparent conflicts in the results of Bayesian analysis or in making the method less sensitive to model violations.

Abstract:
The study demonstrates the methodological approach to the determination of the upper limit of land value and analyzes the influence of the mode of determination of the economic effect of land use and the level of ground waters on its amount. A model was developed based on the business results of an agricultural enterprise involved in a field crop/livestock production over the past few years, which had planned to erect a drainage system in order to manage the excess of water on the available land area. In addition, a methodological approach to the determination of the land output value, i.e. the upper limit of its value was used as well. The need was stressed to start from the maximal economic effect obtained by optimizing production when determining the level. The mode of its determination under the conditions prior to and following land drainage was given as well.
