Abstract:
Abstract Traffic safety is an important requirement in highway planning and design. Many studies related to accident risk analysis have been carried out, but practical applications are still not widely found, especially for accident risk analysis at priority junctions. This study aims to determine the speed and acceleration of motorcyclist behavior entering a junction. It was conducted by measuring the speed of a motorcycle when entering the junction at 150 m, 100 m, and 50 meters before the point of the potential conflict. If the critical gap is longer than the stopping distance (a combination of the reaction time and braking time), the motorcycle will be safe. The results showed that motorcyclist decelerates the speed when entering the junction. The change in speed starts at 50 to 100 meters before the conflict. Motorcyclists will be safe if the speed is less than 65.8 km/h at 50 meters before entering the junction. Keywords: traffic safety, accident risk analysis, priority junction, speed Abstrak Keselamatan adalah faktor utama dalam perencanaan dan perancangan fasilitas jalan. Berbagai penelitian yang berhubungan dengan analisis risiko kecelakaan telah banyak dilakukan, namun aplikasi praktisnya masih belum banyak dijumpai terutama untuk analisis risiko kecelakaan pada simpang prioritas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perilaku kecepatan dan percepatan sepeda motor saat memasuki simpang, sehingga dapat dilakukan analisis terhadap potensi risiko sepeda motor saat memasuki simpang prioritas. Penelitian dilakukan dengan mengukur kecepatan sepeda motor saat memasuki simpang pada jarak 150 m, 100 m, dan 50 m sebelum titik konflik. Apabila celah kritis lebih panjang dari jarak henti (gabungan dari pengaruh waktu reaksi dan waktu pengereman), maka sepeda motor tersebut dapat dikategorikan selamat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa saat memasuki simpang sebagian besar sepeda motor melakukan perlambatan. Perubahan kecepatan mulai terjadi pada jarak antara 50 sampai 100 meter sebelum titik konflik. Sepeda motor akan aman apabila pada kecepatan sebelum simpang tidak melebihi 65,8 km/jam. Abstract:
India and most of the developing countries have unplanned cities in which roads are narrow and unkempt. Due to increasing vehicular density, repair of roads and traffic rules violation, traffic congestion is increasing at an alarming rate. Delay in arrival of High Priority Vehicles (HPV) like ambulances and fire engines cause severe loss to life and property. Although most HPVs are equipped with sirens, it is not efficient to guarantee a clear road to HPVs due to its audibility range. Hence, we propose a system by which the vehicles near the traffic junction will be alerted about the oncoming of HPV much in advance of its arrival so that they can make way for the HPV. In this system, every HPV is provided with an active RFID tag. Few kilometers before the main signal, an active RFID reader would be placed which would detect the vehicle and send this information to the display screen placed near the traffic junction signal via LoRa wirelessly, starting to make way for the HPV. Therefore, this project proposes to streamline the traffic and allow HPV to pass easily.

clinical method for measuring the distance between cemento-enamel junction and the alveolar crest in lower molars and bicuspids in patients with periodontal bone loss, who underwent clinical probing and vertical bite-wing radiographs. Only areas with probing depth greater or equal to 5 mm were included in the sample. The distance between cemento-enamel junction and the apical portion of 82-bone defect was verified through double-needle compass, digital caliper and the software Dentscan Dentview. The accuracy, correlation and comparison between clinical and radiological variables were recorded. The results showed that when the attachment level was the gold standard, the double-needle compass expressed the best accuracy (71% of sensitivity and 84.5% of specificity), followed by digital caliper (0% of sensitivity and 82.8% of specificity) and Dentscan Dentview (0% of sensitivity and 75.9% of specificity) regardless of testing variable or gold standard’s location, more severe diseases were underestimated than overestimation of onset disease. The systems with digital resources showed greater measurement values than methods without digital resources. The traffic lights control system is broadly implemented to track and control the flow of vehicles through the intersection of multiple roads. Nevertheless, the synchronization of traffic light system at adjacent junctions is an intricate issue given the different parameters involved. Existing traffic light control systems do not control many flows approaching the same junctions. This results in traffic jams and congestion at urban areas or major cities with high volume traffic consisting of various types of vehicles. This includes emergency ambulances travelling on the same traffic junction during peak hour traffic. Thus, an enhanced traffic light control system is imperative to provide a smooth and free flow for an ambulance on the way to its destination. The Smart Ambulance Traffic Control System proposed in this paper is an integrated system of traffic light control for emergency ambulance service. The traffic lights can be controlled in a timely and efficient manner every time an emergency ambulance is approaching. The Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is used as an instrument to communicate with traffic lights during traffic congestion. The emergency ambulance driver needs to activate the RFID tag to allow the detection of RFID readers to control the traffic light operation at the upcoming traffic light junctions. The traffic lights in the path of the ambulance are forced to be green to allow the emergency ambulance to pass through the junction with top priority. Immediately after the ambulance has passed the junction, the control system will reset and return to normal operations.

Abstract We have developed a new hybrid model for an heterogeneous traffic flow, based on a coupling of the Lighthill — Whitham and Richards (LWR) macroscopic model and the kinetic model. On the highways of a road network, we consider the macroscopic description of the traffic flow and switch to the kinetic model to compute the mass flux through a junction. This new model reproduces the capacity drop phenomenon at a merge junction, for instance, without imposing any priority rule. We present some numerical simulations in which we compare the results of the hybrid model with those given by the fully macroscopic model. Furthermore, we illustrate the consequences of the velocity distribution on the flow through a merging junction.

This study develops a predictive model for cycling collisions in London. Specifically, the effects of bus lanes, parking or loading facilities, and multilane roads on the risk of cycling collisions are considered. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first such predictive collision model that develops covariates to measure the characteristics of different types of road infrastructure within zones. A kernel density estimator is used to identify 90 collision hotspots. Each hotspot is populated with information regarding the highway infrastructure within it. A multiple linear regression model tests for the statistical significance of the infrastructure variables. Bus lanes, multilane roads, and 30-mph speed limits are found to affect cycle collision counts, whereas junction density has the largest impact on collision density. Speed limits of 20 mph affect collision counts to a lesser degree than 30 mph, indicating potential safety improvement from reducing speed limits. One-way roads are found to reduce the risk of collisions, along with the provision of priority junctions. This infers that other junction types, such as roundabouts and signalized junctions, present a higher collision risk. The models produce conflicting results on parking or loading provision. The models are expanded to include sociodemographic variables, such as population and employment. The combined model offers no performance improvement over the infrastructure-only model, although a potential link between public transport provision and reducing cycle collisions warrants further investigation.

Untersucht wird die Kapazität von Nebenströmen auf Knotenpunkten, die - mit dem Verkehrszeichen 301 bzw. 306 sowie dem Verkehrszeichen 205 geregelt werden, - keine abknickende Vorfahrt aufweisen, - auf zweistreifigen Stadtstraßen liegen und - eigene Fahrstreifen für Linksabbieger auf der Hauptstraße besitzen. Aufbauend auf vorhandenen Untersuchungen werden Auswirkungen von Fahrzeugstrom- und Straßencharakteristiken auf die Kapazität von Nebenströmen sowie verschiedene Aspekte des unmittelbaren Verkehrsablaufs auf Vorfahrtknoten analysiert. Fahrzeugstrom- und Straßencharakteristiken, die zu einer verstärkten Pulkbildung in übergeordneten Fahrzeugströmen führen, ziehen im Vergleich mit zufälligem Verkehrsfluss eine Kapazitätserhöhung nach sich. Mit Hilfe eines erstellten Bewertungsschemas ist es möglich, die Auswirkungen auf die Kapazität von Nebenströmen zu quantifizieren. Um die Interaktionen zwischen einander untergeordneten Fahrzeugströmen bei der Kapazitätsberechnung zu berücksichtigen, werden - die Wahrscheinlichkeit für rückstaufreien Zustand, - die Zusammensetzung des Hauptstroms von kreuzenden Fahrzeugen und Linkseinbiegern sowie - die Berechnung der Kapazität von Mischströmen mit Hilfe von Simulationen untersucht. Zur Berechnung der Wahrscheinlichkeit für rückstaufreien Zustand wird ein vereinfachtes Verfahren dargelegt, das auf bereits vorhandene Arbeiten aufbaut. Für die Zusammensetzung des Hauptstroms von kreuzenden Fahrzeugen und Linkseinbiegern werden die Ansätze aus früheren Untersuchungen präzisiert, indem die Interaktionen zwischen einander vorfahrtrechtlich untergeordneten Fahrzeugströmen stärker berücksichtigt werden. Eine Präzisierung erfährt ebenfalls der Ansatz für die Berechnung der gemeinsamen Kapazität von Mischströmen in Nebenstraßenzufahrten. Hierbei wird gezeigt, dass die gegenseitigen Behinderungen von Fahrzeugen innerhalb von Mischströmen, im Vergleich mit dem bisherigen Ansatz, zu einer niedrigeren gemeinsamen Kapazität führen.

Bus priority in various forms has become an important application in towns and cities around the world, as Local Authorities seek to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their transport systems by promoting the use of public transport with its high passenger carrying capability. Segregating buses from general traffic, using busways, bus lanes, etc is increasingly being supplemented with priority at traffic signals, where signal timings respond to the approach of a bus to give it priority signalling through the junction. This was first trialled in UK on a significant scale in the 1980’s in an area of south east London containing isolated traffic signals operating under the UK’s ‘D-system’ of Vehicle Actuation (VA). There followed a period of some 20 years where equivalent priority strategies were developed, tested and implemented in the more difficult environment of Urban Traffic Control. These strategies have kept pace with the significant advances in technologies over this period, such as in detection, communications, processing and optimisation. However, this has not been the case with bus priority at isolated VA junctions, where strategies developed in London some 30 years ago still prevail – and even in large cities a significant number of signal controlled junctions operate in this way. This then suggested a research gap which has been taken up in this research – the exploration and development of new strategies for bus priority at isolated VA junctions. Taking existing strategies as the ‘base case’, their effectiveness was first explored through theoretical and mathematical analysis. This led to the first new output from this research – more comprehensive predictive equations for bus priority benefits (delay savings) than existed, covering a range of operational conditions. The limitations of the mathematical approach were identified, so research then progressed to the development of microscopic simulation modelling (VISSIM) for junction modelling and for exploring new strategies. This involved four variants of junction design and scenarios reflecting differences in levels of congestion, bus flows, signal timings, etc. New and improved strategies were then developed through modelling, including (i) re-optimising parameter values for the existing priority methods, (ii) improved bus detector locations taking advantage of new Automatic Vehicle Location technologies and (iii) new strategies for bus priority, including a ‘stronger’ strategy termed ‘always green bus’ and ‘differential priority’, where the level of priority given to a bus depended on its performance (eg regularity) at that time. Strategies were also developed to minimise the impacts on general traffic through various forms of compensation, with total person delay then being used as an evaluation criterion. The research has concluded with a series of recommendations for improved implementation of bus priority at isolated VA controlled junctions, taking advantage of the new technologies which are widely available and used within most bus fleets in the UK.

Dissertação de mestrado em Industrial Engineering<br>Traffic congestion in medium-sized cities such as Braga is increasing and have led to worsened travel conditions for the commuters and a rise in pollution levels that lead to life-threatening conditions. Performance indicators, such as travel time, pollutant emissions, vehicle speed, stop times, etc., have worsened over time. This study aims at reducing congestion by simulating alternative designs (infrastructure additions) suggested by the Municipality of Braga and some traffic management strategies. The study area includes the region around Infias roundabout, the two schools Dom Diogo de Sousa and Escola Secundária de Sá de Miranda and the multi-junction that lies connects the highways N101 with highway A11 and the suburbs of Braga. There are two main issues: first is the heavy input to the Infias roundabout and second is that all the traffic flow towards the multi-junction from all directions thus not being able to serve its purpose. To evaluate the conditions, traffic simulation software Aimsun is used. We use microsimulation process that requires accurate study area definition and simulates different types of vehicle behavior that varies during runtime. Data collection involves demand data prediction (estimation of OD matrices) by collecting vehicle flow data by site visits and counts. System model validation is done by verifying the simulation of real-world model with the data collected from site visits. Simulation results suggest that the re-design options led to a significant improvement of most of the performance indicators as compared to the values obtained for the real-world model. Results suggest addition of bridges to facilitate traffic flow from the connected areas towards the open end of the study area. It is recommended that the re-design route must be taken to solve the issue and the implementation of public transport priority plans.<br>O congestionamento do trânsito em cidades de média dimensão, como Braga, está aumentando e levou já, em muitos casos, à deterioração das condições das viagens, ao aumento dos níveis de poluição e dos riscos de acidentes. Os indicadores de desempenho, como tempo de viagem, emissões de poluentes, velocidade do veículo, tempos de paragem em filas, etc., pioraram com o tempo. Este estudo visa reduzir o congestionamento, simulando projetos alternativos (adições de infraestruturas) sugeridos pelo Município de Braga e algumas estratégias alternativas de gestão do tráfego. A área de estudo inclui a região em torno da rotunda de Infias e de duas escolas, Dom Diogo de Sousa e Escola Secundária de Sá de Miranda, e o cruzamento que liga a rodovia N101 à rodovia A11 e os subúrbios de Braga. Existem duas questões principais: a primeira é grande afluxo de veículos na rotunda de Infias, e a segunda é que todo o tráfego flui para uma zona da rede viária composta por múltiplas interseções de fluxos conflituantes. Como resultado, esta rede não consegue servir o seu propósito de servir adequadamente a procura nas horas de pico da manhã e da tarde. Para melhor avaliar as condições atuais, é usado a componente de microssimulação do software de simulação de tráfego Aimsun. O software requer a definição precisa da área de estudo e simula diferentes tipos de comportamento do veículo que variam durante o tempo de execução. A coleta de dados envolve a previsão de dados de procura (estimativa de matrizes OD), recolhendo dados de fluxo de veículos e contagens no local. A validação do modelo de microssimulação é realizada mediante a simulação do modelo representativo da situação atual (com os dados recolhidos in loco). Os resultados da simulação sugerem que as opções de alterar infrastruturalmente a zona de estudo permitirão uma melhoria significativa da maioria dos indicadores de desempenho, em comparação com os valores relativos à situação atual. Em particular, os resultados sugerem que a construção de novas pontes para facilitar significativamente o fluxo de tráfego entre a rotunda de Infias e a extremidade oposta da área de estudo. Recomenda-se que esta estratégia infrastutural seja implementada para resolver, ou, pelo menos, minorar o problema de congestionamento atual and the implementation of public transport priority plans.

Abstract As DRAM technology extends into 12-inch diameter wafer processing, plasma-induced wafer charging is a serious problem in DRAM volume manufacture. There are currently no comprehensive reports on the potential impact of plasma damage on high density DRAM reliability. In this paper, the possible effects of floating potential at the source/drain junction of cell transistor during high-field charge injection are reported, and regarded as high-priority issues to further understand charging damage during the metal pad etching. The degradation of block edge dynamic retention time during high temperature stress, not consistent with typical reliability degradation model, is analyzed. Additionally, in order to meet the satisfactory reliability level in volume manufacture of high density DRAM technology, the paper provides the guidelines with respect to plasma damage. Unlike conventional model as gate antenna effect, the cell junction damage by the exposure of dummy BL pad to plasma, was revealed as root cause.

Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) are used as thermally conducting media to carry away the heat dissipated by an energy source (e.g. active circuitry on a silicon die). Thermal properties of these interface materials, specified on vendor datasheets, are obtained under conditions that rarely, if at all, represent real life environment. As such, they do not accurately portray the material thermal performance during a field operation. Furthermore, a thermal engineer has no a priori knowledge of how large, in addition to the bulk thermal resistance, the interface contact resistances are, and, hence, how much each influences the cooling strategy. In view of these issues, there exists a need for these materials/interfaces to be characterized experimentally through a series of controlled tests before starting on a thermal design. In this study we present one such characterization for a candidate thermal interface material used in an electronic cooling application. In a controlled test environment, package junction-to-case, Rjc, resistance measurements were obtained for various bondline thicknesses (BLTs) of an interface material over a range of die sizes. These measurements were then curve-fitted to obtain numerical models for the measured thermal resistance for a given die size. Based on the BLT and the associated thermal resistance, the bulk thermal conductivity of the TIM and the interface contact resistance were determined, using the approach described in the paper. The results of this study permit sensitivity analyses of BLT and its effect on thermal performance for future applications, and provide the ability to extrapolate the results obtained for the given die size to a different die size. The suggested methodology presents a readily adaptable approach for the characterization of TIMs and interface/contact resistances in the industry.
