Abstract:
Seventy-nine training directors of internship programs based in prisons, jails, and selected forensic settings received surveys concerning several aspects of their programs. Fifty-three responded for a return rate of 67%. Whereas these programs are seen to exist on a continuum with few sharp lines of distinction between them, there are enough differences to warrant applying the term correctional psychology internship specifically to those programs offering training experiences primarily in general population prison/jail settings. Different training emphases and staffing patterns were among factors distinguishing corrections-based internships from their more traditionally forensic counterparts. Both forensic and prison programs offer a wide variety of training experiences and continue to enjoy administrative support.

Abstract:
Scholarship on prison music-making projects and programmes to date has largely overlooked the perspectives of prison music facilitators, who form an integral part of many prison music activities. The aim of the study, which was exploratory in nature, was to contribute to a better understanding overall of the relationship between music and imprisonment by focusing on the perspectives of prison music practitioners. Drawing from data collected in four Norwegian prisons through ethnographic research, data was analysed thematically with four key themes emerging: interpersonal communication and emotional connection; social responsibility; prison system and environment, and (in)difference and exclusion. The findings highlight the fact that the range of prison music activities offered in many Norwegian prisons affects music facilitators deeply in a number of ways, and support existing studies that find that prison music practices can contribute to creating a community of caring individuals both inside and outside prisons. Notably, the emergence of the (in)difference and exclusion theme demonstrates a more critical and nuanced view of prison music facilitators’ experiences as going beyond simplistic, romantic notions of music’s function in social transformation. Concerns raised for those who appear to be excluded or differentiated from music-making opportunities in prison – in particular foreign nationals and women – suggest that (even) in the Norwegian context, music in prisons remains a “reward” rather than a fundamental “right.” This study marks a step towards a richer and more critical understanding of prison musicking and aims to inform future research, practice, and the processes involved in the possibilities for offering music in prisons.

Abstract:
In many countries, there has been growing academic attention towards the activities of street and prison gang members. However, while much of the American literature explores the experiences of prison gang members, such investigation has been notably absent in the English context. This article seeks to address this deficit in the literature. Through gathering data from interviews with active prison gang members, it shows how reduced staffing levels in English prisons has led to an increasingly ‘ungovernable’ prison space. This, in turn, has led to an increase in levels of gang membership. Most notably, the high numbers of street gangs ‘imported’ into prisons has had the unintended effect of creating several ‘in prison’ gangs, which form for the first time in prison, with their members seeking protecting from more established gangs. This proliferation of gangs has had a significant impact on rates of in-prison violence, and how prisons are managed.

Abstract:
Correctional institutions in the United States witness higher rates of suicide compared with the general population, as well as a higher number of attempted suicides compared with completed cases. Prison research focused little attention on investigating the combined effects of inmate characteristics and prison context on suicide, with studies using only one level of analysis (prison or prisoner) and neglecting the nested nature of inmates in prisons. To extend this literature, multilevel modeling techniques were employed to investigate individual- and prison-contextual predictive patterns of attempted suicide using a nationally representative sample of 18,185 inmates in 326 prisons across the United States. Results revealed that several individual-level factors predicted odds for attempted suicide, such as inmate characteristics/demographics, prison experiences, having a serious mental illness, and symptoms of mental health issues. Some prison-contextual variables, as well as cross-level interaction effects, also significantly predicted odds for attempted suicide. Policy and research implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to highlight the impact that Covid-19 has had on the quality of education in prisons. This study considers the restrictive approaches taken by Her Majesty’s Prison Service during this challenging time, to argue that prisoner education is not being adequately prioritised. This study highlight issues relating to the digital divide in prisons and the lack of technological advancement, which could improve educational continuity and in-cell learning. Design/methodology/approach This study provides an examination of the broad impact the national pandemic has had on prisons and punishment, Covid-19 National Frameworks and policies relating to prison restrictions, the movements within prisoner education policy, scholarship and reflections from delivering Learning Together in HMP Full Sutton, to argue that prisoners are at the bottom of the educational hierarchy in terms of delivery, innovation and prioritisation of learner needs. However, this study proposes that some of the technologically enhanced learning is a potential solution, to transform educational equity and to reduce the digital divide. Findings This study highlights that education in prisons has taken a sudden and substantial deterioration. Findings suggest that there are few signs of this improving in the immediate future due to ongoing national restrictions. The Covid-19 prison restrictions further demonstrate the neglect of prisoners' educational needs. In addition, the national pandemic has highlighted the lack of use of technology within educational delivery in prisoners. However, findings suggest that through engaging digital learning platforms and the greater inclusions of technology in prisons, they can enhance educational opportunities and inclusive experiences for isolated learners. Research limitations/implications This is a study piece with support from a review of policy and scholarship. This is not based on data collected with serving prisoners during the national pandemic. Originality/value This study provides an overview of the current restrictions and lockdowns in prison associated with the national pandemic. Contemporary consideration to this underexplored area is essential to highlight the severe deprivations of prisoners and the fundamental impact this has had on educational delivery and much anticipated progression. Nuanced approaches to increase the use of technology within prison education are considered, in light of the challenges the pandemic has spotlighted.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to explore prisoners’ perception of legitimacy of prison staff and examine the compliance of prisoners with the authority of prison staff to highlight the differences between instrumental and normative compliance of prisoners. This study draws on data collected from a random sample of 193 prisoners in all Slovene prisons. Using a qualitative approach based on structured interviews, our findings suggest that distributive justice, procedural justice, the quality of relations with prison staff, and the effectiveness of prison staff influence prisoners’ perception of legitimacy in a prison environment. Several prisoners comply with prison rules because they fear sanctions, which indicates their instrumental compliance, while normative compliance was reported by prisoners who perceived the legitimacy of prison staff in a more positive manner. Overall findings indicate that both instrumental and normative compliance of prisoners can be observed in Slovene prisons.

Abstract:
There has been growing acknowledgment among scholars, prison staff and policy-makers that gender-informed thinking should feed into penal policy but must be implemented holistically if gains are to be made in reducing trauma, saving lives, ensuring emotional wellbeing and promoting desistance from crime. This means that not only healthcare services and psychology programmes must be sensitive to individuals’ trauma histories but that the architecture and design of prisons should also be sympathetic, facilitating and encouraging trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive practices within. This article problematises the Trauma-Informed Care and Practice (TICP) initiatives recently rolled out across the female prison estate, arguing that attempts to introduce trauma-sensitive services in establishments that are replete with hostile architecture, overt security paraphernalia, and dilapidated fixtures and fittings is futile. Using examples from healthcare and custodial settings, the article puts forward suggestions for prison commissioners, planners and architects which we believe will have novel implications for prison planning and penal practice in the UK and beyond.

Intelisano, Sabrina. "Happiness in prison." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7094/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I am going to explore the relationship between happiness and imprisonment. I will discuss three theories of happiness - hedonism, life satisfaction theories and emotional states theories. I will argue that the main problem of these theories is that they take happiness to consist only of psychological states. Because of this, I will turn my attention towards those theories that evaluate happiness in terms of how well life is going for the person who is living it. I will argue that my Aristotelian account is the most plausible way to understand the relationship between happiness and imprisonment. This is because it takes into account both the external circumstances and the psychological and emotional life of pnsoners. Through this thesis, I will show that my account of happiness in prison accomplishes three tasks: i) it solves the problems encountered by the other theories of happiness in the evaluation of prisoners' happiness, ii) it does not suffer from two of the main objections to the other objectivist theories of happiness, and iii) it can help us to investigate the happiness of prisoners empirically more accurately.

Hagedorn, Neva E. "Prison reentry from a psychological perspective| A study of the interfacing ecological factors that impact prison reentry outcomes." Thesis, Union Institute and University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3642763.

Full text
Abstract:

The research question posed within this study is "What are the primary ecological factors that impact successful reentry of ex-offenders from incarceration to civil society?". This question is answered through a thorough study of the literature that investigates the complex relationship between the individual ex-offender and their interfacing ecological system(s). Information gleaned from secondary research will be analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Thematic analysis is a research approach that provides a framework for identifying relevant resources and outcome information, comparing and contrasting these sources of information, and reporting on themes discovered within this extant literature. For the purpose of this study, thematic analysis was used to describe and organize the data collected and provided a framework to interpret the multifarious factors influencing prison reentry outcomes. Against the current trends of deficit-based and fragmented explanations for the growing trends in poor prison-reentry outcomes, this study introduces and promotes alternate explanations that offer a holistic approach which includes both the ex-offender and ecological system factors as relevant influences to be considered when addressing the social problem of prison reentry. Future recommendations emphasizing the vital role that psychologists play in developing policies and practices that improve prison reentry outcomes are offered, including efficacious approaches that are relevant to each level of the espoused ecological system.

Tweedale, Moira. "Interpersonal problem-solving and deterrence: Effects on prison adjustment and recidivism." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/5982.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the relationships between problem-solving ability, perceived aversiveness and deterrence of sanctions for institutional misbehaviour, and subsequent institutional and community adjustment in convicted adult offenders. Subjects completed a battery of tests designed to assess certain interpersonal problem-solving skills. They also provided subjective ratings of aversiveness and deterrence value of 10 common institutional sanctions. Institutional conduct was subsequently monitored for 3 months following testing. In addition, further criminal activity was monitored for a period of 1 year following release from incarceration. The results reveal a modest relationship between problem-solving ability and institutional adjustment and a much stronger relationship between problem-solving ability and subsequent recidivism. Poorer problem-solvers incurred more institutional charges in the early phase of incarceration and more followup criminal charges. In contrast, ratings of aversiveness or deterrence were more strongly related to institutional adjustment and in general were not predictive of subsequent criminal recidivism. Perceptions of aversiveness or deterrence of sanctions, though positively correlated, were not identical. For example, a number of subjects rated the sanctions as aversive but not deterrent, indicating that to some extent these factors are independent. Of the two, perceived aversiveness appeared to be a more accurate predictor of actual institutional behaviour, especially where there was a discrepancy between perceived aversiveness and perceived deterrence. There was some evidence of a relationship between problem-solving ability and perceptions of aversiveness. Good problem-solvers tended to rate sanctions as more aversive than poor problem-solvers. Thus, the greater cognitive flexibility that results from well-developed problem-solving skills may potentiate perceptions of aversiveness. In addition, subjective perceptions of aversiveness and deterrence of sanctions were found to be unstable over time. This was unrelated to whether or not subjects had actually experienced the sanction in the interim between pretesting and posttesting. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for deterrence theory and treatment-rehabilitation.

Hendricks, Edyth Zada. "The Experiences of Witnesses to Prison Sexual Violence: A Case Study." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7389.

Abstract:
Prison sexual violence is prevalent and impacts the witnesses to it. Previous literature has fully discussed the victims of prison sexual violence; however there remains an important gap in the current literature regarding the experiences of witnesses. The purpose of the present qualitative case study was to explore the lived experiences of witnesses to prison sexual violence. The theoretical foundation of this study was the self-categorization theory linked to the prison code of silence. Four ex-inmates answered semi structured interview questions. Transcripts were coded and themes developed. Five themes that emerged were exposure (to prison sexual violence), ineffective guards, avoidance (of witnessing prison sexual violence), distress, and violence. The themes of this study add more information to the literature regarding witnessing prison sexual violence by expanding information beyond aggression and violence. Recommendations from this research can assist prison administrators with assisting to break the prison code of silence; which would enhance social change.

Abstract:
The sentencing and use of mandated treatment policies throughout the country have heightened the number of inmates incarcerated for drug related offenses. The purpose of this quasi-experimental, archival, correlational descriptive study was to determine whether motivation changes during therapeutic community (TC) treatment among a group of incarcerated adult male offenders, as measured by differences in pre and post levels of motivation. The hypothesis that was tested was that there would be significant differences between levels of motivation as measured upon entry and discharge from treatment. The theoretical framework that guided the study was the stages of change theory. Data were collected from archived pre and post treatment Texas Christian University, Treatment Motivation scale (MOT) scores. The target population comprised adult males, who were incarcerated in the state of New Jersey between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2016, and had completed a TC program. A paired sample t test was completed, which indicated that there was a significant difference between levels of motivation from admission to discharge in the TC program. Discharge MOT scores for motivation were determined to be higher than admission scores, which answered the research question regarding levels of motivation change during a TC program. The study findings lend support to the utility of TC programs in changing offender behavior, thereby making inmates more productive members of society and strengthening public safety.

Mikolon, Tricia M. "The Impact of Prison Social Climate on Corrections Fatigue Syndrome." Thesis, Regent University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10281958.

Full text
Abstract:

Denhof et al. (2014) defined corrections fatigue as “a collection of negative an inter-related consequences upon the health and functioning of corrections professionals and the workplace culture as a whole due to exposure to traumatic, operational, and organizational stressors and their interacting consequences” (p. 5) resulting in socially dysfunctional ideology and negative changes in personality, health and functioning, resulting in an average age of mortality established at 59 years (Brower, 2013a, 2013b; Cheek, 1984). Group differences were examined utilizing multivariate statistical tests with archival data. Findings indicate that variables within the correctional environment (age, tenure, gender of staff, security level of the institution and perceptions of assaults and safety) influence the experience of corrections fatigue symptoms. Counselor, administration, and staff implications are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
A cross-cultural comparison of how constructs overlapping with cause, will (human cause), and free will (human cause of a controversial kind) have evolved from concrete origins reflected by Chinese pictographs and the Indo-European etymologies of Greek written words. Cause-related constructs compared are Zhang Dainian’s 元 (yuán), 因 (yīn), 故 (gù), and 所以 (suóyǐ) and the Greek terms aitia (αιτια; “cause”), archē (αρχε; “origin”) and genesis (γενεσις, “genesis”). 因 (yīn) is said, for example, to show a man enclosed (by determinants, possibly prison walls), while aitia (“cause”) is said to be related to aisa (“fate”) and ultimately to the Indo-European root *aito- (“share,” “allotment,” what fate has—concretely, it is contended here—allotted to a person). Reflections on cause lead to interpretations of the more specific cause called will, encountered as 志 (zhì) and 意志 (yìzhì) in Mandarin. Whether the ancient Greeks relied on a construct like will has been debated, but volition in some sense underlies the hekusion (εκούσιον), the voluntary. Volition immediately raises the much debated issue of whether the will is “free.” i.e., whether there is a subset of willed acts without antecedents, spontaneous, emerging ex nihilo. Examination of the etymologies of the characters used to translate the term free will into Chinese—自由的意志 (zìyóu de yìzhì, “freedom of the will”)—and of the Indo-European etymologies of Greek terms like hekusion and prohairesis (προαιρεσις, “deliberated choice”), suggest that neither the Chinese nor the ancient Greeks postulated the existence of free will.

Abstract:
Psychology as a science investigates the most common mental health problems during childhood and adolescence, including anxiety disorders. When the child begins to doubt his abilities in a subject, anxiety can become a factor that prevents him from learning or reproducing the acquired knowledge. Sometimes this can be confused with a learning disorder when it comes to just anxiety. Left untreated, anxiety disorders can affect both students' ability to study and personal relationships. In severe cases, anxiety disorders can make it difficult to go to school. Anxiety is the first intrinsic answer to the requirement of functioning and performance in conditions at least different from the conditions in which we formed our usual techniques.

Abstract:
Teaching research methods and statistics in Psychology is a known pedagogic challenge due to students’ varied mathematical aptitude, prior knowledge and attitudes towards modules. The aim of this investigation was to study student perspectives of an interactive learning approach for the first year practical class of a “Research Methods and Statistics” psychology module based on problems and games. The approach was developed by integrating problem-based learning and games supported by Kahoot and PollEverWhere (Web 2.0 applications). Two groups of first year psychology students (20 persons per group) attended practical classes based on an interactive and a traditional approach but following a different attending order (1. interactive and 2. traditional approach or vice versa) and completed two online surveys. Overall, the interactive approach was perceived to significantly improve student learning experience by promoting active and collaborative learning though the use of real research study applications and formative feedback.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Breastfeeding is the process of giving breast milk to infants from birth to 2 years of age. Breastfeeding twins requires more dedication than breastfeeding a single baby and there are many challenges in breastfeeding twins. This study aimed to review the psychological impact of mothers on breastfeeding twins. Subjects and Methods: This study used a scoping review study by using the Arksey & O’Malley framework. Article identification was using 4 databases, namely Pubmed, Wiley, Sciene Direct, and Ebsco from 2004 to 2019. Keywords selected related to this study and based on the criteria of inclusion are mothers who have twins, full text, in English and Indonesian. The data were reviewed using the Preferred Reporting Items For Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) flowchart guidelines. Results: Nine articles were reviewed out of 1015 extracted. Nine of these articles were screened using the Joanna Briggs Institute. Articles were come from developed and developing countries. Based on the article, there were 2 themes, namely the psychological impact of mothers who breastfeed twins and the support provided by their families. The mother becomes stressed when caring for twins, feels physical exhaustion and the mother feels that the production of breast milk is not sufficient for the baby’s needs. Husband or family support regarding care for newborns during breastfeeding, caring for older children, helping with household chores and encouraging or supporting mothers to continue breastfeeding. Conclusion: The psychological impact that occurs in the mother of twins is that the mother feels stress and the support of her husband or family greatly influences the mother to overcome the psychology of the mother of twin babies. Keywords: experience, breastfeeding, twins Correspondence: Mellysa Wulandari Tasripin. ‘Aisyiyah University Yogyakarta. Jl. Siliwangi, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Abstract:
Neuroscience is an “umbrella” concept which incorporates more scientific domains that permit the accomplishment of transdisciplinary study at the crossroads of biochemistry, physiology, and psychology. The theoretical study concentrates on the analysis of several scientific point of views and research of the main 3 hormones/ neurotransmitters, which define the characteristics of human personality situated in the brain and the spinal cord, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. The above-mentioned hormones/neurotransmitters have beenm studied through the prism of biochemistry and physiology, however, much less through that of psychology. More studies have proven the direct connection between the variation of an individual’s personality and the levels of neurotransmitters present in the system. The previously stated facts highlight the necessity of deepening this study, especially in the domain of correlation between the abundance/absence of a certain hormone/neurotransmitter in the human body and the traits of personality.

In International Association of Cross Cultural Psychology Congress. International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.4087/tgjl6832.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter links macro-level social cohesion to individual value preferences. It explores the predictive, concomitant, and consequential character of cohesion in relation to individual value preferences. Is it that prior cohesion predicts later value preferences? Or is it that certain earlier value preferences impact later social cohesion? Or is there, if at all, only contemporaneous covariation? To answer these research questions, ESS values data from rounds 1-4 (2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008 waves) were separately linked with country-level social cohesion scores from (1) a prior time period, (2) the same time period, and (3) a later time period [e.g., ESS values data from 2008 were linked with social cohesion scores from (1) 1996-2003, (2) 2004-2008, and (3) 2009- 2012]. Multilevel regression analyses show that conservation and self-enhancement values are negatively related to social cohesion, whereas self-transcendence and openness values exhibit a positive relationship. Evidence remains inconclusive with respect to the causal direction. If one wants to interpret small differences between the obtained coefficients, it seems that security values are rather a consequence than a concomitant or cause of cohesion whereas for self-direction we rather find a vice-versa relationship.

Matveev, Alexei, and Miwa Yamazaki Merz. "Intercultural Competence Assessment: What Are Its Key Dimensions Across Assessment Tools?" In International Association of Cross Cultural Psychology Congress. International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.4087/fbqh1446.

Full text
Abstract:
Prior research has identified different dimensions of intercultural competence (IC). However, its focus remains inconsistent across different disciplines and contexts. Existing assessment tools do not focus on all dimensions of Intercultural Competence. Instead, each focuses only on a subset of the IC dimensions. To fill this gap, this study aims (1) to provide a review of currently available assessment tools for IC and (2) to identify a comprehensive list of the key dimensions of IC. This will help researchers agree on a unified definition of IC and develop a measurement of IC that is applicable across contexts and disciplines. The authors find that a comprehensive IC definition and measurement should take into account cognitive (culture-specific knowledge, attitude, open-mindedness/ flexibility, critical thinking, motivation, and personal autonomy), affective (cultural empathy and emotional stability/control), and behavioral (experience, social initiative, leadership, and communication) dimensions.
