Abstract:
The actuality of the research is justified by the lack of serious scientific, social and politically engaged interest in the subject of books and reading among prisoners, which could reflect on the whole society, with negative consequences. This topic has been neglected even at state level in the former socialist camp. A comprehensive picture of the reading in the penitentiary establishments in the world is absent. There is no empirical study on the reading in the places of imprisonment in Bulgaria after the end of the totalitarian period (after 1989). A research interest of the library keepers and of the experts from the public libraries to the problems of the reading in the prison libraries is absent. The aim of the study is to answer the question what is the level of the readers activity in the prisons in Bulgaria and what are the perceived material needs of the prison libraries to meet the reading right of the prisoners. The subject of the study is the access to books and libraries in Bulgarian prisons and the accompanying risk of information discrimination of the prisoner – the feeling of intellectual isolation from the books, the world is reading. Subject of a direct interest is the right of happiness through reading and the opportunities for the welfare of the imprisoned reader. For the first time, a recap of the status of the prison libraries and the readers activity among prisoners in Bulgaria after the democratic changes of 1990 to 2015 is presented. Keywords: penitentiary law; prisoners' rights; right to read; prison reading; access to books in prison; prison library; psychology of readers; sociology of reading

Abstract:
Abstract The charity Reading Force encourages Forces families to read together in order to build social, emotional, and mental well-being and offset the impact of the changes and separations routine in military life. They distribute reading scrapbooks and free books and encourage families to work on them together. It was suggested that a version of the project might usefully be developed for veterans in prison, whose families experience many of the same issues. Scrapbook Dads was developed for veterans housed in the Endeavour Wing at Parc Prison, South Wales. The materials were adapted for use by prisoners and their families. They had just been distributed when the pandemic struck, visiting and social/educational activities were cancelled, and the prison went into lockdown. With the materials readily available, the project was heavily used by prison staff to seek to maintain prisoner morale and support family connectivity. This paper charts the process, comments on what was learned, and makes recommendations for how shared reading can be used in prisons in future.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this article is to explore the influence of books, libraries and reading on the experience of time within the prison environment.Design/methodology/approachUsing semi-structured interviews with Australian adult prisoners, and a phenomenological data analysis method, the researcher has been able to identify lived experiences that explain how books, libraries and reading influence the experience of time, within a prison environment.FindingsPrisoners' experience of time differs from the experience of time outside prison. Unlike readers and library users outside prison, prisoners are motivated to use books, libraries and reading to pass time. They are using books, libraries and reading to assist in their struggle to manage the negative effects of excessive quantities of unstructured time.Research limitations/implicationsResearch regarding the motivation to read and use libraries in the general population does not identify the desire to pass time as a factor. In contrast, the current study identifies readers and library users in prisons are strongly motivated to read and visit libraries as a means of passing time. This study adds a new understanding of the motivation to read and visit libraries within prison environments and provides insight into the beneficial influence of prison libraries on prisoner wellbeing.Originality/valueThis research contributes valuable new knowledge regarding the experience of time in prison, and the influence of books, libraries and reading on this experience.

Abstract:
This essay introduces the concept of “carceral hermeneutics,” the art of interpreting Scripture from within prisons as, or alongside, incarcerated persons. Reading the Bible in prison reframes the Bible as a whole, highlighting how the original sites of textual production were frequently sites of exile, prison, confinement, and control. Drawing on the work of Lauren F. Winner, the author explores the “characteristic damages” of reading the Bible without attention to the carceral and suggests that physically re-locating the task of biblical interpretation can unmask interpretative damage and reveal alternative, life-giving readings. The essay concludes with an extended example, showing how the idea of cruciformity is a characteristically damaged reading that extracts Jesus’ execution from its carceral context. Carceral hermeneutics surfaces a Gospel counter-narrative in which Jesus flees violence and opts for his own safety. Jesus as a refugee (Matt 2), a fugitive (Matt 4:12–17), and a victim escaping violence (Luke 4:14–30) stand alongside Jesus as an executed person to offer a wider range of options for a “christoformity” in which people can image God while fleeing from violence in order to preserve their own lives and freedom.

Abstract:
Readership of prisoners in the Rawicz prisonA prison library is an institution intended to provide convicts with access to literature, culture, and education. In Poland, the approach to functions of prisons and prison libraries changed with political system transformation. After 1989 the penology was modified from the repressive model to the rehabilitative one. Prisoners can participate in cultural events, such as theatre performances, book clubs and prison newspapers publishing. Such involvement should be based on well-equipped library supervised by aqualified librarian. The reality is different, but statistics of Central Statistical Office of Poland GUS reveal that prison libraries in Poland are constantly developing. The author of the work conducted the survey in the prison in Rawicz aimed at the exploration of prisoners’ readership. The analysis involved 50 individuals. According to the study’s results, convicts consider the library as anecessary institution, which they use willingly. Most of the respondents admitted that they read books, while almost all of them reported reading the press. The most popular literary genres among the surveyed turned out to be fantastic and detective stories.

Abstract:
This article presents reflections on teaching work, bringing together narrative reports about the reading of literary works in the context of prison. It is a report of professional experience based on the mediation of reading literary works in prison. Its general objective is to analyze how reading contributes to the reading development of people deprived of liberty in the Resocialization Prison Unit in the city of Codó, in the east of the state of Maranhão. To support the report, it was necessary to understand the historical context of education in the Brazilian prison system through theorists who discuss the meaning that reading can assume in penitentiary systems, to narrate what are the challenges and possibilities of reading literary works in prison, in order to report a professional experience as a project advisor for the Interactive Reading Project - reading habits as a condition for sentence remission. In this sense, we carried out a narrative research, of a bibliographical and exploratory nature, listing ideas, discussions, reflections and their contributions to teaching practice. From this experience, we found that reading, especially literary books, contributes to a change in the mindset of many participating inmates, which can be seen in the activities proposed in the project. Because of this, it is necessary to reflect on the role of educational institutions in offering and encouraging the reading of literary works in prisons, given that reading is one of the main means for building knowledge and socioeconomic, political and cultural transformation of the individuals who participate in this educational process.

Abstract:
This paper unpacks the contradiction between the benefits of literacy and the punitive prison policies that seek to curb or regulate reading by beginning with the complicated historical relationship between incarceration and literacy. I then turn to the testimonies of two prominent incarcerated autodidacts who I now regularly teach within my prison literature classes both on my university campus and at a men’s prison. The writings of Malcolm X and Etheridge Knight model the difficulties of negotiating the institutional risks and personal and political rewards of learning to read and write behind bars—particularly while Black. What is more, while literacy may provide an “on-ramp” toward higher education, barriers for incarcerated people continue to proliferate in our current era in the form of book bans, paywalls, and the material conditions of prisons themselves.

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and it is estimated that about 53 percent of men and 61 percent of women in the US prison population are parents of minor children. As the number of people incarcerated in US prisons and jails grows, so too does the number of children affected by their parents’ absence. Recent estimates suggest that more than 2.7 million US children now have a parent in prison or jail.

Abstract:
This essay problematizes the transformations of punishment in societies of control. To do so, it reconstructs the hypothesis, current in contemporary literature, that we are living in a prison era. The problem is that this hypothesis takes the disciplinary prison as the model for controls, imagining the economy of penality as a historical invariant. As a result, it describes contemporary social formations as “portable prisons”, “prison capitalism”, “open-air prison societies”. In order to correct what we believe to be a misunderstanding, we propose a re-reading of the main contributions of the debate on societies of control in order to reposition both the meaning of penality in these emerging social formations and to take up the abolitionist debate, in a his-torically situated way, on the obsolescence of prisons.

Abstract:
This thesis introduces the study of inmate marginalia as a method for understanding inmates’ uses of texts in prison libraries and for understanding the motivations for these uses. Marginalia are the notes, drawings, underlining, and other markings left by readers in the texts with which they interact. I use the examples of the Talmudic projects to set a precedent for the integration of marginal discourses into the central discourse of society. Next, I discuss the arguments surrounding the use of texts in prison libraries, including an outline for an ideal study of inmate marginalia. Finally, I discuss the findings of my on-site research at four prison libraries in Washington State. After scanning evidence of marginalia from forty-eight texts, a relatively small sample, I divided the marginalia by gender of facility, genre of text, address of the marginalia, and type of marginalia and found statistically significant correlations (p < 0.05) between gender and genre, gender and address, gender and type, and genre and type. However, while these correlations are statistically weak and require further investigation, the statistically significant correlations indicate the potential for integrating inmate marginalia studies into the scholarly discussions regarding inmates’ interactions with texts in prison.

Adams, Daniel Clayton. "The formation of the prisoner-theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer: a close reading of Letters and papers from prison, from April 5,1943 to July 20, 1944." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13649.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to take Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s prison experience seriously as a spiritually and theologically formative journey through liminal displacement. Using the anthropological theory of liminality as a lens for analysis, it offers a close reading of Bonhoeffer’s prison writings, examining the porous nature of the sociocultural and metaphorical boundaries of the prison space as expressed in notes, letters, essays, prayers, poetry, and theological letters. In doing so, the thesis suggests that Bonhoeffer’s dramatic transition into the prison space results in an “inbetween- ness” (Palmer et al. 2009) that suspends the prisoner “betwixt and between” (Turner 1967) light and dark, inside and outside, above and below, sacred and profane space, dislocation and located-ness, suffering and hope, life and death. Chronologically examining distinct phases of liminality – separation, transition, anticipation – the study shows a cumulatively transformative movement in which the prisoner is drawn ever more deeply into the reality of his own life, and an ever increasing relationality with others, with God, and with the suffering of those who inhabit the view from below. It is observed that by taking an active role in navigating liminality, Bonhoeffer encounters multiple turning points at the heart of betwixt space, which break up “default modes of perception,” (Wannenwetsch 2012) transforming the prison cell into a privileged place of insight that ultimately catalyses a transformative new vision of reality and the Christian life. Within liminality the borderlines and boundaries of the prison space remain just porous enough to create the possibility for alternative ways of viewing reality. Through theological, poetic, and polyphonic anticipation, Bonhoeffer risks imaginative resolve by reframing liminality as a Gethsemane-like displacement, stations on the way to freedom, and participation in the polyphonic nature of life. In it is concluded that Bonhoeffer’s prison experience represents a uniquely formative space in which he was drawn into participation in the life, sufferings, and death of Jesus Christ.

The significant increase in crime and the level of imprisonment of the Brazilian penal system has led scholars, the government and civil society to reflect on strategies that reverse this extremely fragile situation. In this perspective, this research was started with the general objective of describing how the language classes of the. (PB) have been developed and their possible contributions to the construction of competences related to reading directed towards the social reintegration of prisoners. It is justified to carry out this study the desire to investigate this reality that presents its own characteristics and specificities, bringing to light the effects of the critical reading in favor of the social reintegration of the victims. Based theoretically on the modern trends of the Public Educational Policy of Young and adult implanted in the prison schools allied to the central concepts of Freirean pedagogy and of the areas of reading and critical literacy will be made a reflection on the pedagogical practices and the incentive to the reading in this educational environment using as methodology the qualitative research of an ethnographic nature, with support in a bibliographical research. Data were collected through systematic observations of reading classes, informal conversations and structured questionnaires. The results obtained point to a deficiency in the reading training of the subjects involved, due to a traditional pedagogical practice that prioritizes reading teaching as a mere decoding of letters and phrases, without instigating the critical reading by the learner, constituting an obstacle to criminal resocialization, much although the prisoners see prison education as a fundamental instrument in their social reintegration, taking into account the expectations of improving living conditions at the time of their return to society and contributing to improve expectations regarding employability, which indicates urgency in the implementation of public policies that contribute to teacher education for the development of critical reading training.

The research topic was defined in reading the literary genre tale. Justify the choice of narrative, tale feature as a permanent dialogue with life. The tale excites and stimulates ideas in discussions. The research geral objective I propose is to (re)signification of reading stories to young people and adults deprived of freedom. How to (re)signified, I understand a new reading with positions and a meaning that goes beyond the text of the speech and interact with life and with others. Some questions guided this research: How to include in the pedagogical practices, sociointeractional reading conception as social practice? How to propose pedagogical practices that enable the student to (re)signify the story read? As from the reading of short stories motivate writing, giving voices to these students? Initially, I made a short theoretical base on literature as a human right, essential in the process of humanization of people, dialoguing with authors such as Candido (2004) and Cosson (2012). In theoretical basis, I sought to analyze the different conceptions of reading, based on Bakhtin (2003); Koch and Elias (2012); Sole (1998) and Geraldi (1997). As conception of reading to support both classes taught, as the analysis of these, I have chosen one sociointeractional and reading as a social practice design. For this purpose, the authors that dialogue are: Rojo (2004); Kleiman; Moita Lopes (1995) and Fairclough (2001). The research method focused on Applied Linguistics guidelines following a qualitative-interpretative approach. To this end, I performed a didactic intervention project in the perspective proposed by Gasparin (2012), in other words, the Plan for Teaching Work (PTD). Analysis of the classes was carried through my diary and student written productions. As a result, the application of lessons shows the voices of the students in both oral (in listening moments of his interpretations) as in times of writing in which students produce other stories, poems, phrases and illustrations. The students were able to (re)signify the reading of tales read in accordance with the relations established with their impressions of the world, as well as listening to their own colleagues and realizing that we can weave different understandings about what we read. Thus, students extend this continuity of meaning out of school sphere and this implies the reading as a social practice

Abstract:
Abstract There are many opinions about adding water to the soil when obtaining the potential readings for cathodically protected underground pipelines and above ground tank bottom. The study is aimed to determine if this procedure is essential and if it is affected by different soil types. The study covered five petrochemical plants operating in the coastal region of Saudi Arabia. In this study we will compare the potential readings for the underground pipelines and aboveground tank bottoms which are cathodically protected by impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system or by sacrificial anode cathodic protection (SACP) system were compared The results showed that it is necessary to add water to the soil prior to taking potential readings of the structure.

Abstract:
Abstract Ambient conditions can be critical to the success or failure of a coatings project. It has generally been assumed by the industry that a sling psychrometer is more accurate in determining Relative Humidity and Dew Point than electronic sensors. While this may be true for meteorological sling psychrometers that meet the criteria of ASTM E337 “Measuring Humidity with a Psychrometer (the measurement of Wet- and Dry-Bulb Temperatures)”1, the sling psychrometers in use in most coating applications appear to lose accuracy as temperatures increase above 80°F. In the 80°F range and above, electronic sensors appears to provide much more consistent data. When “red spirit” thermometers are slung in these temperature ranges, the dry bulb temperature may vary by ± 10 °F or more from the reading observed prior to slinging it.

Abstract:
Abstract Aluminum finned copper-tube heat exchanger coils at an industrial facility experienced localized corrosion after a few months of operation. Initial testing indicated that the potential cause of corrosion was due to a process known as formicary corrosion. The source of the corrosion was investigated by performing air sampling of the location prior to and during the floor cleaning process as a way to determine whether the chemical cleaners used in the facility were potentially responsible for the accelerated corrosion. While some aggressive species were identified prior to the floor cleaning including formate, the measured levels of formate during the cleaning process were elevated from the initial baseline readings. Furthermore, acetate was not measured in the baseline readings, but was measured during the cleaning process. Two types of chemicals are used to clean the room containing the heat exchangers. Cleaner A is composed of two chemicals, one being alcohol based and the other chemical contains acetate groups. Cleaner B is composed of a long chained carbon molecule and oxygen organic component. Based on the air sampling results, the corrosivity of the two cleaners was examined. The experimental test consisted of filling a clean jar with the individual cleaning solutions diluted to ratios of either a 1:1, 6:1, or 12:1 with deionized water (DI). In addition, jars containing DI were used in the study. Copper tubes were maintained in the vapor space of the jars and exposed to a cyclic temperature between room temperature (≈24 °C) and 40 °C. The samples were exposed for 30 days. The results of the test showed minimal pitting on all samples, yet the material exposed to Cleaner A at a dilution ratio of 1:1 showed deep penetrating corrosion. The degradation was roughly halfway through-wall on the tubes exposed to the 1:1 Cleaner A to DI. From these results, it appears that the chemicals in the Cleaner A solution have the ability to lead to significant degradation in the copper tubing.

Abstract:
Abstract Steel surfaces are frequently cleaned by abrasive impact prior to application of protective coatings. The resulting surface profile creates complications when measuring the thickness of an applied coating using a coating thickness gage. The effect on gage measurements increases with profile depth and also depends on the design of the probe and the thickness of the coating. Various international standards propose different, and often times dissimilar, methods to correct for the effect of surface profile on dry film thickness (DFT) readings. This study intends to analyze and compare different adjustments methods, including those provided in ASTM1 D7091 (1) and ISO2 19840 (2) to determine their accuracy and similarity. A number of different coating thickness gage models will be used to better determine the applicability of each method, and to determine how well the methods apply for varying instruments, probe designs, and measurement range capabilities.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper addresses both safe cathodic protection limits for pre-stressing steel in concrete given the concern of hydrogen embrittlement (HE) and the adequacy of cathodic protection using established criteria. Impressed current cathodic protection was applied to laboratory scale pilings at current densities ranging from 0.1 to 2.5 μA/cm2 via a skirt anode located at the waterline. Adequate cathodic protection was achieved at positions ranging from 25 cm above to 50 cm below the waterline, according to the 100 mV depolarization criterion, at an apparent applied current density of 0.33 μA/cm2. However, the -780 mVSCE criterion was not met for currents as high as 1.33 μA/cm2 for these positions. Hydrogen production, absorption, and permeation in steel was first observed via embedded hydrogen sensors, located 50 cm and 25 cm above the waterline, at an applied current density of 0.33 μA/cm2. The observation of hydrogen production verifies the concerns that the local oxygen concentration may be readily depleted at modest cathodic protection levels and that local pH levels may be below 12.5. Experimentation presented here, as well as within the literature, has demonstrated that steel crevice corrosion is readily initiated within chloride contaminated concrete prior to the application of cathodic protection, and that this corrosion is accompanied by an acidification of the local environment to a pH of 6 or below due to ferrous ion hydrolysis. The mobile subsurface hydrogen concentration present within the steel reinforcement was determined for each applied cathodic current density. Although hydrogen production and uptake occurred at current densities as low as 0.33 μA/cm2, the critical hydrogen concentration for embrittlement (2x10-7 mol H/cm3, as determined in prior research for bluntly notched pre-stressing steel) was not exceeded at area averaged current densities as high as 1.33 μA/cm2.

Abstract:
Abstract Conductivity testing, via Bresle patch analysis, was performed on F-5 aircraft in Key West, FL, Fallon, NV, and Yuma, AZ to compare the level of salt contamination present at each location. The inspection locations were selected based on the observations of the pilots and maintenance staff of VFC-111, the squadron stationed in Key West, FL. The selected locations represented the areas of highest concern and recurring problem areas noticed by maintenance staff. Testing was performed at several points during the flight schedule: before the first flight of the day, following a flight, and prior to and following a scheduled clear water rinse event. The results obtained from Key West, FL and Fallon, NV indicate a large discrepancy in the amount of salt contamination present in the two locations, with Key West yielding much higher readings. These results lead the researchers to believe that the aircraft in residency in Key West should be treated in similar fashion to those maintained aboard aircraft carriers, including more frequent wash and inspection cycles, and potentially proper marinization of the aircraft with marine specific coatings.

Abstract:
Abstract The determination of the concentration of soluble salts on a surface prior to the application of paint is a key inspection task for most protective coating processes. The entrapment of soluble salts, particularly on a steel surface can lead to premature coating adhesion failure and corrosion cells being established. This leads to a severe reduction in the expected life of the protective paint system. SSPC Guide 15 describes the saturate special filter paper conductivity meter methodology amongst others for the retrieval and analysis of soluble salts from steel and other nonporous surfaces. There have been recent developments in the design and features of the equipment available for this specific test. This test method has been used for many years and the basic method for extracting the soluble salts from the surface using a cleaned filter paper and pure water is unchanged. However, the electronic conductivity meter has been redesigned to include a menu structure with the measurement sequence displayed and a reading memory to store the values obtained using this test. The data contained in the memory can be transferred to Data Management Software to automate the presentation of the results in reports. This paper describes the measurement method and presents a case study of the analysis of test panels to demonstrate the performance of the method.

Abstract:
Chemical engineering is a highly complex interconnected major. Just as chemical engineers have broken complex processes into unit operations, the chemical engineering curriculum has been broken up into courses. The organization of these courses vary among institutions and are based on years of prior teachings and research. Despite this, there have been calls to revaluate the curriculum from both industry and academia. We propose a graph-based representation of curricula in which topics are represented by nodes and topic dependencies are represented by directed edges forming a directed acyclic graph. This enables using graph theory measures and tools to provide formal ways of evaluating a curriculum. Additionally, the abstraction is readily understandable meaning conversations between instructors regarding the curriculum can occur within a department and even across institutions. This abstraction is explained with a simplified curriculum and applied to the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Highly and lowly connected topics are identified and approaches for grouping the topics into modules are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Nickel-chromium alloys for service at elevated temperatures are generally solution annealed prior to service to coarsen their grain size to enhance their high temperature strength and resistance to creep and rupture. Alloys for high temperature are often supplied from the producing mill as solution annealed. However, this large grain condition is not optimum for fabrication as it can compromise weldability and the large grain material is subject to stress relaxation cracking when annealed after heavy cold forming. Ideally these alloys are supplied after a lower temperature heat treatment that anneals the product but avoids substantial grain growth. Such fine grain material is more readily formed and much more resistant to stress relaxation cracking when solution annealed after forming. While the example of alloy 800HT is used to demonstrate the advantage of this processing sequence, the technique can be applied to essentially any alloy or stainless steel that is to be used for applications at highly elevated temperatures.

Abstract:
Abstract The corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete highway structures involves electrochemical reactions and as such can be arrested by electrochemical means such as cathodic protection or electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE). The ECE method is typically similar to cathodic protection in that it involves application of current. It requires the installation of a temporary anode (5 - 8 weeks) on the surface of the concrete and the passage of direct current between the anode and the steel reinforcement which serves as the cathode. The current density of the ECE process is approximately 100 times the current density used in conventional cathodic protection. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) first used ECE on an experimental basis in 1989. More recently, the Ministry has specified ECE on conventional contractor-bid contracts to mitigate the effect of corrosion distress on 5 piers and 1 abutment at the Burlington Bay Skyway in Burlington and 12 bridge abutments in North Bay, Ontario. Evaluation of ECE by the Ministry has indicated variable performance. Performance as expected, meeting the −250 mV static potential criterion specified by the Ministry has been documented on some structures but not on others. The reason for this variable performance is not yet well understood. The paper will review variables such as total ampere hours passed, depth of concrete cover, depth of chloride corrosion threshold relative to the reinforcement, steel current density compared to concrete current density and corrosion potentials prior to and after treatment. Rate of corrosion measurements by the linear polarization technique will also be presented as well as concrete resistivity readings prior to and after treatment. The paper will attempt to identify parameters that predict the probability of success of the ECE treatment. Typical costs experienced on the Ministry’s ECE contracts to date will also be reported.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to follow-up on a prior project1 which investigated the use of Questioning-the-Author (QtA) (e.g. Beck & McKeown, 2002; Beck, McKeown, Sandora, Kucan, & Worthy, 1996) with negotiation for meaning (NfM) (e.g. Pica, 1994) in Singapore Primary 4 (P4) reading lessons (OER 29/08 RS). A 2-year collaborative project was undertaken to assist teachers in understanding and using QtA and negotiated discussions. The intervention also intended to lead to sustainable, school-based teacher development through introducing different ‘generations’ of teachers to join the project year-by-year and by encouraging the first generation (Gen 1) of teachers to act as mentors and leaders to the second generation (Gen 2). Research Questions 1. How do teachers understand reading comprehension in the local, P42 school setting (i.e. what do teachers understand reading comprehension to be and how do they understand the development of student reading comprehension)? 2. In what ways do teacher understandings of reading comprehension change through participation in a long-term (3 year) professional development project? Specifically, in what ways do teacher understandings change at different points of time (1 year, 2 years, 3 years) and when engaged in different roles (trainee, trainer, observer, evaluator)? 3. How successful are the different stages of the intervention (Direct Instruction, Reflection & Adaptation, Lesson Study) in changing teacher classroom practices for reading comprehension?

The 2021 National Assessments of English Reading and Mathematics (NAMER) Context Report offers a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing achievement in Second class English reading and Sixth class maths in Ireland. Due to pandemic-related disruptions, NAMER 2021 was postponed from 2020 and adapted to reduce the testing burden. Pupils had experienced approximately two months of remote teaching prior to returning to face-to-face instruction in March 2021. Drawing on data from questionnaires administered to pupils, teachers, and school principals, this report situates performance outcomes within broader educational and socio-economic settings. Key variables examined include, pupil background, language, instructional time and homework, teacher professional development, digital practices in school and home, and school factors such as school gender, planning and COVID-19 impact. Recommendations stress the need to build on existing good practice in schools as well as the strengthening initiatives to improve liking and confidence in reading and mathematics.

Abstract:
The coating porosity as a function of the relative specific gravity and density of plastic coatings is determined readily by float sink criteria in aqueous salt solutions of known densities. The porosity (void content) of plastic coatings is calculated readily from the experimentally found density and the maximum density supplied by the powder manufacturer. This test method may involve hazardous operations and equipment. This test method does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of whoever uses this test method to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Leonard, Talayna, Robert Lemme, Cati Kral, et al. High-Percentage of Early Resectable Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma is Unidentified on Abdominal CT Obtained for Unrelated Diagnosis. Science Repository, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31487/j.aco.2021.02.03.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has the best survival when detected early with 5-year survival near 40% for small, resectable PDAC. We evaluate the undiagnosed PDAC imaging features on routine CT and their impact on resectability. Methods: 76 of the screened 134 CTs from 1/1/2012 to 12/31/2018 using our tumor registry were obtained prior to PDAC diagnosis for other indications at least one month before presentation. Each cross-sectional study was reviewed for features of early PDAC: pancreatic mass, pancreatic ductal dilatation, perivascular/peripancreatic soft-tissue infiltration, omental lesions/ascites, and lymphadenopathy. When such features were detectible by the reviewing radiologists, the original CT readings were classified as concordant/discrepant. Descriptive statistics are reported for discrepant reads, tumor resectability, and tumor size. Results: Of the 76 cases from 46 unique subjects (30 male/16 female), 25 CTs (33%) had undetected PDAC imaging features: masses (15/19 unreported), ductal dilatation (16/20 unreported), and peripancreatic/perivascular soft-tissue infiltration (20/36 unreported). 63% of early PDAC features were not identified initially. One year before clinical diagnosis, 75-80% of the PDAC cases were resectable; at < 6 months before clinical diagnosis, only 29% were resectable. Conclusion: Improving early detection of key PDAC features on routine CT examinations can potentially improve patient outcomes.

Abstract:
The Government of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is undertaking significant primary education reforms, supported by the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through its flagship Basic Education Quality and Access in Laos program (BEQUAL). The Australian Government has commissioned a study to investigate how the BEQUAL program is making a difference to improving teaching quality and student learning outcomes. This research is part of a multi-year study series undertaken by DFAT's Education Analytics Service to investigate teacher and learning development initiatives in three countries: Lao PDR, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. In 2019, the new curriculum for Lao language and other subjects was introduced for Grade 1 and is being phased in across all five primary grades. The new curriculum promotes teaching practices that support pedagogies focused on student-centred approaches, active learning, assessment of student learning progress, and a phonics approach to teaching reading. Teachers are being provided with teacher guides and other teaching and learning resources, and receive face-to-face orientation on the new curriculum. In BEQUAL-targeted districts, education support grants are also available to facilitate additional in-service support for teachers and principals. This study has provided the opportunity to investigate teaching quality and student literacy outcomes in Lao PDR over two rounds of data collection, with another planned for October 2022. The Baseline Report captured ‘state of play’ information in 2019 prior to major curriculum changes, as well as the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This summary provides an overview of findings and recommendations from the second year (2021) of the study, following two years of BEQUAL support for the implementation of the new Grade 1 Lao language curriculum.

Blake, Carolyn, Benjamin P. Rigby, Roxanne Armstrong-Moore, et al. Participatory systems mapping for population health research, policy and practice: guidance on method choice and design. University of Glasgow, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36399/gla.pubs.316563.

Full text
Abstract:
What is participatory systems mapping? Participatory systems mapping engages stakeholders with varied knowledge and perspectives in creating a visual representation of a complex system. Its purpose is to explore, and document perceived causal relations between elements in the system. This guidance focuses on six causal systems mapping methods: systems-based theory of change maps; causal loop diagrams; CECAN participatory systems mapping; fuzzy cognitive maps; systems dynamics models; and Bayesian belief networks. What is the purpose of this guidance? This guidance includes a Framework that aids the choice and design of participatory systems mapping approaches for population health research, policy and practice. It offers insights on different systems mapping approaches, by comparing them and highlighting their applications in the population health domain. This guidance also includes case studies, signposting to further reading and resources, and recommendations on enhancing stakeholder involvement in systems mapping. Who is this guidance for? This guidance is designed for anyone interested in using participatory systems mapping, regardless of prior knowledge or experience. It primarily responds to calls to support the growing demand for systems mapping (and systems-informed approaches more broadly) in population health research, policy and practice. This guidance can however also be applied to other disciplines. How was it developed? The guidance was created by an interdisciplinary research team through an iterative, rigorous fivestage process that included a scoping review, key informant interviews, and a consultation exercise with subject experts. What is the ‘Participatory Systems Design Framework’ included in this guidance? The Design Framework supports users to choose between different methods and enhance the design of participatory systems mapping projects. Specifically, it encourages users to consider: 1) the added value of adopting a participatory approach to systems mapping; 2) the differences between methods, including their relative advantages and disadvantages; and 3) the feasibility of using particular methods for a given purpose. An editable version of the Framework is available to download as a supplementary file. How will this guidance support future use of these methods? Participatory systems mapping is an exciting and evolving field. This guidance clarifies and defines the use of these methods in population health research, policy and practice, to encourage more thoughtful and purposeful project design, implementation, and reporting. The guidance also identifies several aspects for future research and development: methodological advancements; advocating for and strengthening participatory approaches; strengthening reporting; understanding and demonstrating the use of maps; and developing skills for the design and use of these methods.

Kudin, Roman, Prabhat Chand, and Anura Bakmeedeniya. Mitigating Nitrogen Oxides Exhaust Emissions from Petrol Vehicles by Application of a Fuel Additive. Unitec ePress, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/rsrp.083.

Full text
Abstract:
This research has been commissioned by Eco Fuel Global Limited, a New Zealand-based company, to further evaluate the effects of their fuel-additive product on the tailpipe exhaust emissions of petrol cars. At the time this research was conducted (end of 2018), the product was still in development and had not been released to the market. Prior to the testing in this research, an initial pilot test was done for the same product on a single car (Nissan Pulsar 1998), which showed favourable results, with a reduction in hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen at the tailpipe by more than 70%. The current research included five test cars, all running on RON 95 fuel, with the years of manufacture ranging between 1994 and 2006, and the odometer readings between 112,004 km and 264,001 km. The effects of the fuel-additive product were assessed by comparing the emissions from a car running on standard fuel with the emissions from the same car after it completed a road run (250±20 km) on the additive-treated fuel. The exhaust emissions were measured using the AVL series 4000 Emission Tester, which analyses five components: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOX), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxygen (O2). The most noticeable outcome of using the fuel-additive product was the reduction in the concentration of oxides of nitrogen in the tailpipe exhaust (by up to 27.7%), when compared with the same cars running on standard fuel. In addition, the results showed a decrease in residual oxygen concentration, which normally indicates more complete utilisation of O2 as an oxidising agent. Mitigating Nitrogen Oxides Exhaust Emissions from Petrol Vehicles by Application of a Fuel Additive Dr Roman Kudin, Prabhat Chand and Anura Bakmeedeniya 2 The changes for other emission parameters were either relatively small (below 1%) or were not statistically significant. The application of such fuel-additive products could be beneficial for mitigating nitrogen oxides exhaust emissions from petrol vehicles in countries with ageing car fleets. These include New Zealand, which has a relatively high proportion of old cars in use, with no government-run scrappage scheme, and without a mandatory objective emissions testing.

Ellinger, Matt, Francois Ayello, and Guanlan Liu. PR-186-213600-R01 Generic External Corrosion Growth Rate Distributions for Buried Pipelines. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0000059.

Full text
Abstract:
External corrosion growth rates in buried pipelines are influenced by a vast quantity of parameters, and the interaction of these parameters creates complexities that can be challenging to understand. As a result, external corrosion growth rates are difficult to estimate and measure. Further, the detailed actual conditions where external corrosion growth is occurring are often not known. When external corrosion growth rates cannot be calculated (i.e., using a corrosion growth rate model) or measured (i.e., ILI run-to-run comparisons), default corrosion growth rates are frequently utilized in making Integrity Management decisions. Often, these default, or assumed, corrosion growth rates are overly conservative. Using overly conservative external corrosion rates can result in a poor utilization of resources. However, there may be locations of isolated and accelerated corrosion growth in which the assumed rates are non-conservative. Non-conservative assumed external corrosion growth rates can result in lack of awareness of locations that may become critical prior to the next planned integrity assessment. Therefore, it is ideal to evaluate appropriate external corrosion growth rates along the length of a given pipeline. Applied external corrosion growth rates are utilized in making Integrity Management decisions on a pipeline, such as optimizing excavation programs and establishing integrity reassessment intervals, and therefore, it is important to utilize realistic rates that are accurate and not overly conservative. This report describes a methodology for establishing generic external corrosion growth rate distributions based on empirical ILI and corrosion modeling data. The report describes key parameters that affect, or can be utilized to establish, external corrosion growth rates. The identified key parameters include data that should be understood and/or readily available to pipeline operators. The authors of this report have created external corrosion growth rate distribution curves for each combination of the identified key parameters. The results of this project can be utilized by pipeline operators to establish data driven and justifiable external corrosion growth rates on pipelines in which rates are not able to be calculated from historical and/or ILI run-to-run comparisons.

McMahan, Tara, Bill Amend, Ken Evans, Tom Bubenik, and Michael Rosenfeld. PR186-223601-R01 Evaluation of Selective Seam Weld Corrosion Susceptibility. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0000065.

Full text
Abstract:
Selective seam weld corrosion (SSWC) in autogenous welds is characterized by accelerated corrosion of or near the bondline which results in a groove-like feature that often coincides with shallower corrosion that can extend beyond the limits of the longitudinal seam. Historically, SSWC has been referred to as "grooving corrosion", "knife-line attack", or "trench-like corrosion". In 2021, the Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI) funded a project, PRCI Project EC-2-12, to evaluate SSWC as a threat to gas and liquid pipeline systems. The project included a literature review of key parameters influencing the likelihood of SSWC within a particular type of pipe over others, benchmarking of the key parameters using industry experience and data, and the development of a susceptibility process for the threat of SSWC within gas and liquid pipeline segments. From the literature review, a summary of hypothesized influencing parameters was compiled and those considered to more strongly and consistently indicative of susceptibility were identified as key parameters (e.g., longitudinal seam weld type, chemical composition of the plate material, and evidence of a post-weld heat treatment, etc.). The key parameters were then benchmarked against pipeline industry data from confidential as well as public sources. Industry data were collected for line pipe known to be susceptible to the threat of SSWC (i.e., SSWC has been identified within it through direct examination and/or metallurgical analysis). Additionally, mill test reports for line pipe manufactured prior to 1990 and historical line pipe manufacturing specifications that could indicate typical manufacturing practices of the time were collected and compiled. As a result of the benchmarking effort, some key parameters were confirmed, and others were dismissed if industry data indicated it was unlikely they could be relied upon to determine susceptibility to the threat of SSWC individually or in concert with other parameters. Key parameters confirmed as reliable through industry benchmarking and considered readily accessible to most pipeline operators informed the development of a SSWC susceptibility determination process. The process is comprised of 'swim' lanes that consider threat history, line pipe susceptibility, and environmental influences. The project also included an investigation into the Barnacle probe technique as a potential field deployable methodology to determine susceptibility to SSWC. Currently, it is the most common method to test for SSWC susceptibility in the field and is an electrochemical cell that attaches to the exterior of a pipe directly over the bondline after the surface has been properly cleaned. The linear polarization resistance (LPR) technique is used within the Barnacle cell to measure the polarization resistance of the bondline compared to the polarization resistance of the surrounding base metal. The ratio of the polarization resistances, which is a measure of the relative corrosion rates at the bondline and surrounding metal, provides an indication of how susceptible the bondline is to SSWC. The Barnacle probe technique was applied to materials with varying degrees of anticipated susceptibility. The results of the technique were benchmarked using accelerated dissolution tests to measure actual grooving ratios for the same range of materials.
