This paper theorizes that a process of identity transformation occurs when individuals enter prisons, whereby individuals become prisoners. I investigate how this identity transformation occurs through interaction with the prison’s architectural design. In the second half of the 20th century, the tendency to abolish the death penalty influenced to an increased use of life imprisonment. According to available data, about half a million people in the world today are serving a life sentences in prison. Out of 216 countries and territories, life imprisonment is imposed in 183.
