Abstract:
The onboard training environment is important for the continuity of cadets’ maritime careers and for the wider industry. Various studies have been conducted with the aim of improving the onboard training environment of cadets in various respects including education, health and safety, and sexual harassment. However, there is a lack of research that details the problems associated with onboard training and how the safety of cadets is managed in the field. Descriptive and non-parametric statistics were used to analyze the data from 284 cadets from maritime universities and 41 shipping company employees in South Korea collected between March and July 2020. The results show that many cadets are not guaranteed enough rest time and the provision of personal protective equipment. In addition, some companies consider cadets to be crew members or temporary workers. To improve the training environment, recommendations include the evaluation of the ship’s environment to establish whether it is suitable for training, constant monitoring of whether the onboard training guidelines are maintained in the field, strengthening of preventive education on human rights violations, and expanding efforts continuously not only to physically improve the onboard training environment but systematically manage cadets as students.

Malinina, Svetlana Mikhailovna. "Methodological technology for improving the English-language terminological competence of maritime university navigation cadets." Pedagogy. Theory & Practice 10, no. 4 (2025): 520–29. https://doi.org/10.30853/ped20250064.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to develop a methodological technology for improving the English-language terminological competence of cadets specializing in 26.05.05 Navigation, based on individual and differentiated approaches. The article identifies and describes four main stages of English-language terminological training for cadets over a 5-year period of study: the preparatory stage, the stage of intro-ducing narrowly specialized terminology, the stage of mastering special terminology and introducing ter-minology from related fields of knowledge, and the stage of improving terminological competence within the framework of an interactive method. The latter stage involves the use of terminology by cadets as a means of professional communication and professional growth. The study reveals the peculiarities of teaching fifth-year cadets of a maritime university and substantiates the need to apply the principles of individualization and differentiation of the educational process at the final stage of terminological compe-tence formation. This constitutes the scientific novelty of the research. As a result of the research, the article justifies the feasibility of combining the principles of individualization and differentiation of training for the optimal organization of the educational process in the 5th year of maritime universities. The introduction of individualized and differentiated learning contributes to the adaptation of cadets to the learning conditions in the 5th year and intensifies the learning activities of each cadet.

Abstract:
Ships are the preferred transportation fleet for export-import activities compared to air transportation, because of their large carrying capacity, making them relatively more profitable. Ships without cargo to sail safely will add ballast water as a stabilizer. Ballast water often carries a variety of foreign microorganisms that can harm the landfill ecosystem. On September 8, 2017, the ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) was enacted, to prevent the spread of pathogenic microbes that are very harmful to health and the environment. The purpose of the study was to determine the understanding of private academy cadets on the provisions of BWMC. Data were collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews, then descriptive analysis was carried out. Respondents were cadets of private maritime academy in Central Java, a total of 35 respondents. 6 respondents were excluded because they gave dishonest answers, so the sample used was 29. From the conclusion that there were still many respondents who did not understand the provisions of BWMC, it was evident from the respondents' answers to several questions that none of them were correct. Such as the question of when the BWMC was promulgated, when Indonesia ratified the BWMC, and the question of the D-1 Standard and the D-2 Standard of the BWMC. However, there are 13.79% of respondents already have a concern about the dangers of ballast water and the importance of immediately handling ballast water. Our suggestion is to disseminate information to private academy cadets through seminars, special training on ballast water, or inclusion in marine pollution course materials.

Abstract:
One of the most important tasks of professional training of cadets at maritime universities is to prepare them for competent actions in any accident and emergency. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) reiterates the importance of naval professional training. IMO normative acts like conventions, codes and resolutions indicate that each crew member should be able to maintain the required safety, objectively assess current conditions, navigate in a difficult situation, prevent an accident from developing into an emergency, correctly apply fire extinguishing equipment, quickly close holes, remove accumulated water that threatens ship stability, etc. Implementation of IMO requirements is the main direction in studying special and conventional academic disciplines. For quality assurance of cadets’ learning achievements in the overall academic discipline, it is advisable to use diagnostic assessments. The paper is geared to investigate the way students develop their professional competency when they master special (conventional) disciplines through education diagnostic assessments. The paper aims to develop a toolkit for providing a reliable assessment of the level of mastery of the academic discipline on Basic Security Training by cadets. The authors creatively applied the method of theoretical analysis of scientific literature; testing method; forecasting method; methods of mathematical verification of the reliability and validity of the developed test. In the end, a new test to assess the level of cadets’ performance in a special (conventional) discipline is a correct and timely action. The developed test will replenish a critical pool of diagnostic education resources and will be in demand for education diagnostic assessments in modern maritime education institutions.

Abstract:
Efforts to implement the concept of autonomous transport in the shipping industry are currently underway with the introduction of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS), which is expected to usher in a new paradigm in maritime trade. However, this requires a stable supply of highly qualified seafarers. Predicting the changes necessary for seafarer education and training in the MASS era is pivotal for the safe and efficient development and operation of autonomous ships. The present study conducted a survey using Q methodology on fourth year students of the Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), to examine their perceptions towards changes in ship organizations, and the competency of seafarers required in the MASS era. From the analysis, we extracted three unique clusters of cadets’ perceptions towards new competencies with the introduction of MASS: “the traditional seafarers’ centric role retainer”, the “ship organizational structure domain achiever”, and the “new technical competences builder”. The emerging findings can predict the educational needs and new competences of seafarers in the MASS era, as well as support managerial implications. These results are expected to serve in establishing the future direction of seafarer education and training in both private and public organisations.

Abstract:
The Training Record Book (TRB) is an essential document cadets use during their shipboard training. The TRB guides the student and the shipboard training officer, ensuring cadets attain the necessary competencies under the STCW Tables A-III/1 and II/1. The limitation of the TRB is that it is dominated by the psychomotor domain of learning. At a forum of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) in 2020, the most in-demand skill by 2050 is soft skills, followed by technological skills. This entails the development of not only psychomotor, but also cognitive and affective domains. In addition, the skills and competencies needed will go beyond the technical competencies stated in the STCW. The methodology utilized a qualitative design with an exploratory concept wherein the Book of Knowledge (BoK) was incorporated in the cross-referencing of the learning outcomes, and the TRB tasks develop a more holistic, comprehensive, and future-proof shipboard training.

Abstract:
Maritime world and industry across the globe employ people from different countries which have a multicultural background. English as the most common second language in the world is really used and important as a language to communicate in the ship. So, English language proficiencies and skills are a must. In order to have common general standards in language (English) for maritime there must be regulation regarding the standardization itself. The requirements for communicative competence of seafarers in STCW present a great challenge to Indonesian seafarers who will struggle to improve their linguistic competences, since in Indonesia English is still known as a foreign language. The research taken place at Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Sulawesi Utara with population of the sample is cadets in Ship Engineering study program. The research aims to evaluate the current Maritime English course curriculum in Indonesian shipping or maritime vocational colleges-universities by analysing communication skills required by seafarers on fishing vessels. Data was gathered from documents and interviews with industry participants. The results indicate that the current exam is inadequate in preparing students for global seafarer standards. The study suggests a genrebased approach for English language courses, including Maritime English (ESP), to enhance cross-cultural knowledge and improve work skills. This approach can help university graduates gain a competitive edge in the labor market by improving communication and work performance.

Abstract:
Boarding universities require students to follow the existing rules quite strictly, starting from waking up in the morning until going back to sleep. Students who live in dormitories must immediately adjust even though it feels difficult. The demands of the new environment must be responded to wisely. Individuals who have a tough personality will be able to adapt to the demands of a new environment wisely. This research aims to look more closely at the emotional regulation of students who live in dormitories in terms of the attachment patterns they develop before becoming students and during their time as students. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods, trying to explore the description of students' emotional regulation during life in the dormitory and the impacts that arise. The results of this research reveal that there are four types of attachment patterns with different self-regulation, namely secure, bound, inbound and anxious attachment patterns. The conclusion from the results of this research is that a secure attachment pattern will give rise to positive emotional regulation. Positive emotional regulation needs to be developed so that students are able to undergo education while in the dormitory with excellent mental health, are able to adapt to their social environment well, are more productive and in the future these individuals will be able to face challenges in their lives better. This research continues research expressed by Fitri (2023), namely that the stressors most often experienced by students living in dormitories are intrapersonal stressors at 62.59%. Without mature intrapersonal abilities, it will be difficult for individuals to face the unexpected and establish good relationships with other people

Abstract:
Freight transport via ships is the cheapest and most effective way to transfer more than 80% of the global cargo volume. Seafarers have always been multinational, and accordingly, non-English-speaking crew members are becoming an increasing presence on board. Although marine engineers comprise half of the crews among all seafarers on board ships, Standard English guides, such as SMCP for navigation officers designed to reduce communication barriers, are unavailable for marine engineers. IMO conventions require marine engineers to possess adequate English skills. However, marine accidents due to inappropriate communication between crew members continue to occur. In this paper, 185 marine engineer cadets enrolled in two universities who had completed 12 months of training on a commercial ship or school training ship were surveyed in terms of the adequacy of English courses for marine engineers in class. This paper investigated whether the marine engineer English subjects are reviewed and analyzed and whether the English examination for the Certificate of Competence is suitable for the content taught in international maritime instruments and for the actual work of engineers. Finally, this paper aimed to establish a need to develop Standard English for engineers.

The profession of a lawyer is very important for the political system of the country and society as a whole, because it covers various segments of the state: economic, political, social, moral, psychological, etc.; how the profession affects the moral and moral values of the society is an urgent issue for the modern world. It is important how future lawyers master the material that they are taught at an educational institution. Besides, during training it is critical whether they realize the significance of their profession, whether they can be held responsible for their actions and acts in the professional environment and in private life. Corruption is one of the global challenges of the humankind around the world. There is no country in which it is absent, because its roots go back to the beginning of the formation of civilization. Corruption is multifaceted and has different forms and types. It drastically affects the moral values of people, including the younger generation, whose boundaries are erased in the understanding what is normal and acceptable. The purpose of the study is to identify how the civil law and anti-corruption legal awareness of future legal professionals is formed. The material of the study was the data of an anonymous questionnaire of cadets of Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University.

Abstract:
The article deals with the problem of improving the quality of training future navigators according to the strategic goals of the modernization of the educational process in Ukraine’s marine higher educational institutions, based on the humanistic paradigm, which requires special attention to the formation of future navigators’ communicative self-efficiency. The study of this problem is of particular relevance, since it is one of the main professional characteristics for representatives of the senior command navigators that enables them to carry out professional activities productively, adequately and at a high level: to organize the coordinated work of the crew, especially consisting of specialists of different nationalities, religious denominations, mentalities; competently and skilfully communicate with seaport employees, representatives of foreign companies, etc. The paper presents the conceptual provisions of A. Bandura, the founder of the theory of self-efficiency, its role and importance in person’s life as well as those of J. Caprari and D. Servon, D. Matsumoto (communication), educators (self-efficiency), (communicative self-efficiency) in the context of importance and the need to develop and form these phenomena for improving the quality of the training aimed at future navigators in higher education institutions of maritime profile. The phenomenon “communicative self-efficiency of the future navigators” has been defined; its essence and structure have been considered, the latter consisting of three components: reflexive (self-identification with navigators as model professionals, the presence of adequate self-assessment of their own actions in the field of professional communication, a stable reflexive position), cognitive-operational (awareness of the communicative sphere of maritime professional activity, skills, professional communication abilities); affective-behavioural (confidence in the possibility of productive communication in professional activities, emotionality, activity, responsibility, ability to self-regulate and self-sustain). The forms and methods for the formation of communicative self-efficiency of cadets of marine universities involved into the experiment have been presented: reflective workshop, keeping a reflective diary, which gave the cadet the opportunity to conduct self-analysis of their own professional actions and enhance self-understanding regarding the presence of the necessary professional personal qualities for performing their future professional activities effectively and building a positive Self-concept of the future navigator; the organizing dialogue “The role of the reflective component in developing future navigators’ communicative self-efficiency”, the technology “Developing confidence in self-efficiency and productive communication of future navigators in their future independent professional activities”, the training module “Communication skills”, etc. Keywords: communication, self-efficiency, communicative self-efficiency, future navigator, marine higher educational institution.

Abstract:
The project EUMARSIN (European MARine Sediment Information Network), is an international scientific project financed by the European Community and its aim has been the development of an internet retrievable metadatabase containing the marine sediment samples collected from the European Seas. The project, with duration of two years, started on November 1998 and ended on October 2000. This paper elucidates the concerted activities of the partners participating in the project and represent the Marine Geology Departments of the Eurogeosurveys (ERG) now called Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) of the European Union maritime countries, with the additional participation of a private company specialized on marine data management. The metadata can be accessed on the EU-SEASED Website through both an alphanumeric search and retrieval interface and by a geographical interface which allows the user to define an area of interest on a scrollable map showing the distribution of the seafloor sample/core locations. The EUMARSIN metadatabase now contains approximately 180.000 seabed samples collected by the Geological Surveys and other research organizations, universities, hydrographie offices and commercial companies in Europe. The metadatabase will be regularly updated by the partners on an on-line data entry system which will allow other organizations to contribute their metadata either retrospectively or as new data. The outcome of the EUMARSIN project, will be the successful establishment of the http://www.eu-seased.net marine sediment metadatabase and the development of analogous databases in each Geological Institute with the same specifications. This constitutes the first pan-European metadatabase in the marine geoscience field.

Abstract:
Coastal ocean observing and modeling systems (coastal observatories), connected with regional and global ocean systems, improve the quality of information and forecasts for effective management of safe and sustainable maritime activities. The public availability of systematic and long-term information of the ocean is an engine for the Blue Economy, boosting economic growth, employment, and innovation. An overview of some Brazilian initiatives is presented in this paper, involving universities, private companies, federal and state agencies, covering institutions from south to north of Brazil. Although these initiatives focus mainly on ocean physics, integrated efforts can extend the scope to include biogeochemistry and marine biodiversity, helping to address interdisciplinary problems. Existing initiatives can be connected, and new ones fostered, to fill in the gaps of temporal and spatial coverage of ocean monitoring in the vast oceanic area under Brazilian jurisdiction (nationally referred to as the Blue Amazon, in reference to the similar richness of the Amazon Forest). The alignment among national and regional initiatives, as well as with international programs, can be promoted if coordinated by a national-level organization, maximizing the return of public investment and socioeconomic benefits. In light of international examples, possible future institutional arrangements are discussed, leveraging from existing national public policies and international cooperation that Brazil is taking part. The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development is a timely opportunity to encourage an institutional arrangement to support and articulate an integrated network of coastal observatories in Brazil.

Abstract:
Indonesian EFL students faced online teaching and learning in such a rapid process. Therefore, this research was carried out to search for EFL students in Indonesia about their responses on teaching and learning online. This research applied the action research method with the paradigm of quantitative descriptive approach. Data for this research was collected via an online questionnaire, distributed to one class size sample consisting of 32 students in the even semester of the 2019/2020 academic year at one of the private colleges in the West Sumatra province of Indonesia. The data were analysed by descriptive statistics, especially the percentage of each item available in the questionnaire. Findings of this research show that the respondents, or the students, had their evaluation toward the online teaching and learning. The significance of this research is that their responses briefly invite us as scholars, teachers, and lecturers, or scholar-practitioners, to think about the feasibility condition of online teaching and learning, that it should be done contextually and prepared carefully. The Covid-19 pandemic situation has forced students to face double challenges in education: learning the materials in such a digitalized situation and handling external issues emerging while learning online.
