Abstract:

A new model of astronomical observatory is presented, small and versatile, capable of satisfying the demands of professional and amateur astronomers: The PROAM Observatory. An auto-installing, low cost and easy to transport observatory has been designed, with light and resistant materials. It can house astronomical material, and auxiliary equipment in a reliable and safe way. It has a specific software, that allows us to control the observatory and to operate with all the equipment in remote or in automatic form.

Abstract:

ZusammenfassungIn einer offenen Beobachtungsstudie sollte der Einfluss einer leitliniengerechten Beratung migränebetroffener Arbeitnehmerinnen und Arbeitnehmer (Migränepatienten) durch den Betriebsarzt auf die Arbeitsfähigkeit erfasst werden. 489 Migränepatienten wurden beobachtet (92% mit mittelschweren und schweren Kopfschmerzen, 69% waren stark oder völlig eingeschränkt). 50% waren bisher ohne ärztliche Hilfe ausgekommen, 47% therapierten sich selbst mit rezeptfreien Arzneimitteln. Der Betriebsarzt beriet die Migränepatienten entsprechend der Migräneleitlinie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Neurologie (DGN). War eine Änderung der medikamentösen Therapie erforderlich, empfahl sie der Betriebsarzt an den behandelnden Arzt. Die Beratung durch den Betriebsarzt führte insgesamt betrachtet zu keiner nennenswerten Verringerung der Fehlzeit pro Migräneattacke. Bei neu auf Triptane eingestellten Patienten verringerte sich die Fehlzeit (mittlere Abwesenheit von der Arbeit) um 1,4 Stunden pro Attacke und bei bis zu 25% von ihnen sogar um mindestens 4,2 Stunden pro Attacke. Bei den bereits vorher mit Triptanen behandelten Migränepatienten ergab sich keine Veränderung bei der Arbeitsunfähigkeit.

Abstract:

This project deals with possibilities of using the software defined radio conception for radio amateur use in a short wave band and its subsequent implementation into properly designed hardware. The aim of this work is to design a transceiver that would be capable of working in AM, FM, SSB, and CW modes. Within a theoretical part of the project the architectures of software defined radios and their components are discussed. This part was focused mainly on analog parts of the chain, such as amplifiers, filters and converters. Signal processing algorithms for both receiver and transmitter working in desired modes are studied subsequently and their computer models are built. Designed algorithms are implemented into FPGA structure (Virtex -5).

Uma porção significativa do nosso conhecimento quotidiano sobre a África Subsaariana provém do trabalho dos repórteres internacionais. Contudo, e ainda que estes actores desempenhem um papel crítico na comunicação do Outro distante, frequentemente criticado pelos seus défices representacionais, a investigação académica sobre o trabalho dos correspondentes internacionais tem sido consideravelmente negligenciada: encontra-se desactualizada em décadas, carecendo de um exame sistemático das realidades efectivas do jornalismo em África e da evolução do trabalho de Pro-Ams e organizações de media dos cidadãos, suportados por meios digitais ligados em rede. Esta tese tem como objecto a caracterização e análise sociodemográfica destes indivíduos, das suas culturas profissionais e trabalho noticioso. Inspecciona trajectórias de longo curso no jornalismo internacional, combinando-as com desenvolvimentos de curto prazo baseados nas transformações na microelectrónica e digitalização. São delineadas três linhas de inquérito: quem está realmente a reportar em todo o continente, quais são as principais características das culturas ocupacionais e os constrangimentos que impendem sobre as rotinas de produção dos trabalhadores noticiosos. Avaliamos como estão os repórteres internacionais a reposicionar-se num ambiente comunicacional em transformação, como interpretam a sua própria ocupação e o papel dos actores emergentes na esfera mediática transnacional. Simultaneamente, contribuímos com uma investigação exploratória sobre as actividades das organizações de media dos cidadãos. Para cumprir estes objectivos, conduzimos o primeiro questionário online Pan-Africano de que há registo sobre o trabalho dos repórteres internacionais, recolhendo respostas de 124 participantes em 41 países. Estes resultados são complementados através de entrevistas semiestruturadas com 43 jornalistas profissionais, em Nairobi, Dakar e Joanesburgo. Os resultados obtidos desafiam a narrativa que apresenta a reportagem internacional como uma espécie em extinção. Ao invés, suportam uma visão diferenciada entre continuidades localizadas e rupturas localizadas na contemporânea e pós-industrial esfera mediática: a sua sociodemografia expressa uma nova economia da correspondência internacional caracterizada por uma considerável precariedade, particularmente no caso dos trabalhadores independentes (freelance), enquanto a utilização de media digitais ligados em rede conduz o campo a uma confederação de correspondências com múltiplas camadas. O campo não é já um território exclusivo de profissionais e estes têm agora de lidar com a escala sem precedentes de conteúdos gerados pelos utilizadores e reacções directas. Os profissionais despendem uma muito considerável porção de tempo diário na Internet, o que sugere uma mudança de paradigma nas práticas de recolha informativa e, em última análise, na sua cultura epistemológica.

Actualmente estamos a trasformar-nos numa sociedade cada vez mais ligada ao mundo digital, nas suas mais diversas formas, através dos dispositivos avançados que a tecnologia disponibiliza no mercado. Este tipo de sociedade, exactamente por viver no digital grande parte da sua vida, irá também atribuir um grande valor e importância aos conteúdos. Os conteúdos modificam-se constantemente, mas são a base da Web 2.0 e, por isso, são o que a define e aos seus utilizadores; de tal modo que acabam por influenciar culturas e a forma como o utilizador escolhe relacionar-se com os seus pares. Esta troca de conteúdos e informações entre diversos utilizadores de diferentes culturas é potencializada pelo aparecimento das Redes Sociais, que juntam em comunidades online uma enorme quantidade de indivíduos ávidos por produtos e serviços que incluam “personalização”, “proximidade” e “participação”. A Web 2.0, com todos os seus meios de divulgação e produção democratizados e as suas Redes Sociais deu origem a práticas de trabalho e produção em conjunto, que vieram mudar a forma como são hoje desenvolvidos variados projectos. O “conteúdo gerado por utilizador”, a “angariação de multidão” (“crowdsourcing”) e o “financiamento por parte da multidão” (“crowdfunding”) são algumas das actividades melhor sucedidas neste novo panorama. O conteúdo devolve o papel de produtor ao utilizador, criando-se assim uma enorme variedade de conteúdos individualizados, enquanto a angariação e o financiamento provam que, em conjunto, a multidão pode produzir de forma eficaz e organizada, aliviando marcas e empresas de custos económicos, ou até mesmo juntando recursos para que possam investir noutros utilizadores. Envolvidos nas práticas acima descritas, aparecem diversos tipos de figuras, e utilizadores, tais como os “prosumidores”, os “pro-am” e os “carreiristas em série”; munidos de meios com qualidade mais do que suficiente para produzir produtos e conteúdos por parâmetros profissionais, estes utilizadores modificarão o contexto em que se procura e exerce uma profissão.
Currently, we’re becoming a society more connected to the digital world, in its various forms, through the advanced devices that technology places on the market. This kind of society, exactly for living a big part of its life in the digital, will also assign a great importance to content. Contents change constantly, but they’re the basis of Web 2.0 and for that what defines it and its users, so that they define their culture and the way they’ll choose to relate with others. This exchange of content and information between several users from different cultures was potentiated by the appearance of Social Networks that put together in online communities a huge quantity of avid individuals for “customization”, “proximity” and “participation”. Web 2.0, with all its democratized means of divulgation and production and its Social Networks, gave rise to work and production as a group, that came to change the way projects are developed today. “User generated content”, “crowdsourcing” and “crowdfunding” are some of the activities that succeeded in this new perspective. The first one gives back to the individual the role of producer, creating a lot of new individualized contents, whereas the others prove that in a organized group a crowd can produce effectively, relieving brands and companies of economic costs, or even putting together resources so they can invest in other individuals. Involved in the practices described above, different types of users appear : “prosumers”, “proams” and “serial-careers” are some examples; bearing means with more than enough quality to produce products and content by professional parameters, this will modify the context in which we search and practice a profession.

Abstract:

With the rapid increase in demand for more high-value customized products and a more sustainable approach to manufacturing, companies are focusing on being more flexible while also trying to minimize environmental impact. As it is not possible to meet these current demands using traditional manufacturing techniques, manufacturing industries are searching for better manufacturing alternatives to address these issues in order to stay competitive. In this thesis, the two issues of manufacturing complex, low volume parts and environmental sustainability were investigated with the use of the additive manufacturing (AM) technology and possible improvements/recommendations were suggested. The conclusions drawn suggested that AM could be used to produce complex parts more efficiently and also proved to be a more sustainable alternative with decreased energy and resource consumption when compared to traditional methods.

A Bacia do Rio Negro-AM possui características particulares de biodiversidade, temperatura e umidade e um importante fator a ser considerado nesta região é a grande quantidade de substâncias húmicas presentes nos sistemas aquáticos e terrestres. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se a influência da sazonalidade nas características estruturais das substâncias húmicas aquáticas (SHA) extraídas de amostras coletadas no Rio Negro-AM e sua interação com íons mercúrio. Os parâmetros razões atômicas C/H, C/N e C/O, grupos funcionais, radicais livres do tipo semiquinona, pH, índices pluviométricos e fluviométricos, concentrações de mercúrio foram interpretados por análise hierárquica de cluster (AHC) e análise de componentes principais (ACP). As análises estatísticas mostraram que, quanto maior o índice pluviométrico e menor o índice fluviométrico maior o grau de humificação das substâncias húmicas aquáticas. A seguinte ordem decrescente do grau de humificação das SHA coletadas mensalmente pode ser estabelecida: Novembro/02 a Fevereiro/03 > Março/02 a Maio/02 > Junho/02 a Outubro/02. As maiores concentrações de mercúrio foram determinadas nas amostras mais humificadas, sugerindo que devido a rearranjos inter e/ou intramoleculares, quanto maior o grau de humificação maior a afinidade dos íons Hg(II) pelas substâncias húmicas aquáticas. A capacidade de complexação das substâncias húmicas aquáticas por íons Hg(II), nas diferentes frações indicaram que quanto maior o teor de carbono, menor é a capacidade complexante das substâncias húmicas, podendo inferir que a capacidade complexante não está diretamente relacionada com o teor de carbono, mas com a disponibilidade dos grupos funcionais nas substâncias húmicas aquáticas. The Rio Negro Basin has particular characteristics of biodiversity, temperature, humidity and an important factor to be considered is the great amount of humic substance in aquatic and terrestrial systems of this region. In this work, the influence of seasonalness on the structural characteristics of aquatic humic substances (AHS) extracted from samples collected in the Rio Negro-AM and its interaction with mercury ions were evaluated. The C/H, C/N and C/O atomic ratio parameters, functional groups, concentration of semiquinone-type free radicals, pH, pluviometric and fluviometric indices, and mercury concentrations were interpreted using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). The statistical analyses showed that when the pluviometric index was greater and the fluviometric index was smaller, the degree of humification of aquatic substances was greater. The following decreasing order of the degree of humification of the AHS collected monthly was established: Nov/02 to Feb/03 > Mar/02 to May/02 > Jun/02 to Oct/02. The greatest concentrations of mercury were detected in more humidified samples. These results suggest that due to inter and/or intra-molecular rearrangements, the degree of humification of aquatic humic substances is related to its affinity for Hg(II) ions. The complexing capacity of humic substances by Hg(II) ions in different fractions indicated that the greater the carbon content the lower the complexing capacity of humic substances, allowing one to infer that the complexing capacity is not directly related to the carbon content, but to the availability of functional groups in aquatic humic substances. Multivariate statistical analyses indicated that the fractions were grouped as a function of the collection months and not of the molecular size. Abstract:

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a popular style of additive manufacturing (AM) where a 3D object is fabricated by a molten material deposited into successive 2D layers. Multi-material 3D printing is particularly challenging due to poor adhesion between dissimilar plastics. The majority of currently available multi-material printers use separate nozzles for each material. Therefore, they are incapable of producing devices made of functionally gradient materials (FGM). FGM is a special class of engineering material exhibiting spatially inhomogeneous content, which tailors the material for specific functional and performance requirements. In this work, we present the design and characterization of a bi-material co-extruder system. This specialized extruder is capable of printing two thermoplastic materials through a single nozzle and is also capable of altering the composition of the deposited material while printing. It is also exceptional in that the internal structure of the hot end can be easily accessed and is a more adaptable design than previously reported co-extruders. The extruder was installed on a Geeetech PI3 Pro C printer. Then, some simple structures were printed using pairs of materials including polylactic acid (PLA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Without any internal mixing features, the composition of the output (for instance, different colored PLA) was determined from microscopic images of cross-section of the extrudates.

Demand for a highly skilled workforce in the field of additive manufacturing (AM) is growing but is underserved due to limited academic course offerings and high barriers for incorporating industrial AM systems into education. Virtual reality (VR) is proposed as a medium to help teach introductory concepts of AM to a broader audience in an interactive, scalable manner. Before implementing VR as a standard tool to teach the concepts of AM, we must evaluate the effectiveness of this medium for the subject. Our research aims to answer the question: can VR be used to teach introductory concepts of additive manufacturing in a way that is as effective as teaching the same concepts in a physical setting? The research looks at the learning differences between two groups: (1) students exposed to an interactive AM lesson in a traditional physical setting and (2) students exposed to the same lesson within a virtual environment. The study assesses participants’ AM knowledge through pre-/post-AM lesson evaluation. AM conceptual knowledge gained and changes in self-efficacy are evaluated to make an argument for the effectiveness of VR as an AM learning tool.

Abstract:

A rapidly increasing body of data indicates that the vascular endothelium plays an active role in the development of inflammatory and thrombotic processes. Our laboratory has focused on the modulation of certain endothelial cell functions by inflammatory/immune mediators. Initially, we demonstrated that human monocyte derived interleukin-1 (hmIL-1) can act directly on cultured human endothelial cells (HEC) to increase the expression of tissue factor procoagulant activity in a time- and protein-synthesis dependent fashion (J. Exp. Med. 160:618, 1984). Increased expression of HEC tissue factor was also elicited with recombinant IL-1α (rlL-lα), rIL-1 β, and recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (rTNF), as well as with bacterial endotoxin (1 ipopolysaccharide, LPS) (Am. J. Pathol. 121:393, 1985; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 83:4533, 1986). The kinetics of the HEC tissue factor responses to these stimuli were similar, demonstrating a rapid use rise to peak activity at ~ 4 hr, and a decline toward basal levels by 24 hr. This characteristic decline in tissue factor PCA after prolonged incubation with IL-1 or TNF was accompanied by selective endothelial hyporesponsiveness to the initially stimulating monokine. Interestingly, the effects of IL-1 and TNF were found to be additive even at apparent maximal doses of the individual monokines. We have also examined the effects of IL-1 and other mediators on HEC production of fibrinolytic components (J. Clin. Invest. 78:587, 1986). HEC monolayers which had been treated for 24 hr with IL-1 or TNF exhibited decreased tissue type plasminogen activator (tPA) and increased plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) as assessed in functional and immunological assays. Thus, certain inflammatory mediators such as IL-1 and TNF can act on vascular endothelial cells to induce the expression of tissue factor in a rapid and transient fashion, and to decrease the expression of fibrinolytic activity in a more prolonged fashion. In a parallel series of studies, we have demonstrated that IL-1, TNF and LPS also act on HEC to increase the adhesion of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), monocytes and the related cell lines HL-60 and U937 (J. Clin. Invest. 76:2003, 1985; Fed. Proc. 46:405A, 1987). The kinetics of this modulation of HEC adhesiveness parallel that of the change in tissue factor PCA. Recently, we have developed two monoclonal antibodies (mAb), H4/18 and H18/7, which identify a surface antigen expressed on monokine- and LPS-stimulated HEC but not on unstimulated HEC. The mediator specificity, kinetics, and protein synthesis-dependence of the expression of this antigen correlate with increased HEC adhesiveness for leukocytes. Neither mAb binds to unstimulated or stimulated PMN, HL-60 cells or dermal fibroblasts. H18/7 inhibits the adhesion of PMN (>50%) and HL-60 cells (>60%) to stimulated HEC by comparison to isotype matched control mAb; H4/18 also inhibits HL-60 adhesion but to a lesser extent. H4/18 and H18/7 immunoprecipitate the same polypeptides from biosynthetically-1abeled monokine-stimulated HEC, but not unstimulated HEC. We have designated this inducible endothelial cell surface protein, endothelial-leukocyte adhesion molecule-1 (E-LAM 1). Thus, vascular endothelium can be activated by inflammatory/immune mediators to express both prothrombotic and pro-inflammatory functions. In vivo, these endothelial responses may contribute to a variety of pathophysiologic processes.

Sistemas de Detecção de Intrusão (IDSs) baseados em aprendizado de máquina (AM) vêm sendo amplamente utilizados para detectar tráfego malicioso e ataques às redes. Entretanto, essas abordagens ainda apresentam grandes dificuldades para detectar os diferentes tipos de ataques que vêm se aprimorando. Neste contexto, dentre os passos requeridos para uma avaliação baseada em AM, a seleção de características tem grande importância para propiciar maior eficiência na detecção de anomalias e ataques de rede, sendo ainda um problema em aberto. Este artigo propõe uma abordagem que realiza a seleção de características baseada em clusters para melhorar a detecção de ataques e tráfegos anômalos na rede. A proposta cria também um ranque com as características de tráfego que mais contribuíram para o incremento nos acertos dos algoritmos. Os resultados mostraram um desempenho superior às demais propostas avaliadas para cinco diferentes tipos de ataques, considerando a métrica F1 score.

La movilidad urbana vertical (MUV) ha estado relacionada con el transporte de pasajeros desde su origen. Escaleras mecánicas, cintas transportadoras y elevadores son elementos que hacen accesibles las estaciones tren, de metro o de autobuses. Su función es que estos medios de transporte sean accesibles, que se reduzcan los tiempos de viaje y que se mejoren las conexiones entre los diferentes medios. En las ciudades de un tamaño medio como el Área Metropolitana (AM) de Pamplona, en las que, por sus distancias, gran parte de la población puede realizar sus itinerarios caminando, es fundamental estudiar las barreras urbanas que pueden existir, tanto las generadas por la propia topografía como por el diseño de los espacios públicos. Los elementos de MUV no solo resuelven los problemas de accesibilidad del entorno, sino que, según su posición, en ocasiones son capaces de generar nuevos ejes urbanos que modifican en parte la movilidad urbana. Como veremos, estos elementos de MUV pueden plantear una alternativa al transporte público en zonas de peor accesibilidad o pueden complementarse con la red de transporte público urbano como intercambiador. Para analizar la movilidad peatonal del AM de Pamplona se tomarán como base los datos de la Encuesta Domiciliaria de Movilidad de 2013.
