Abstract:
Traditional audio description (AD) is giving way to integrated audio description in which media accessibility is no longer an add-on but built in from the start in collaboration with the artistic team. As directors and producers take a greater interest in making their work accessible to audience members with a sensory impairment, how are the power dynamics altered between the stakeholders? The idea of abusive forms of translation advanced by Lewis (1985) and Nornes (1999) is reconsidered, together with the sanctity of the source text (ST). Also assessed is the impact on the role and hence the training needs of the professional audio describer. Using data from research projects developed by Extant, the UK’s leading professional performing arts company of visually impaired people, and from the European research project ADLAB PRO, this paper concludes that a describer’s skills and competences are still required even with the evolution of integrated AD.

Abstract:
Karen Smith (1966–2017) had long been interested in altered states of consciousness. In seeking help with her own psychiatric illness, she came across Agrippa’s works on occult philosophy and the use of spoken-word formulas for entering and exiting differential states of being. These steps over the psychic threshold are known as adorcism and exorcism – the summoning and banishing of demons or spirits. Over the course of a week in 1999, she decided to try out some of Agrippa’s techniques. She chose to be possessed and then dispossessed by the seven spirits associated with the planets of classical antiquity. She documented one ritual per day. For each action, she used the same devices – a bathtub filled with water, a lamp and an audio cassette player with a tape featuring incantations pre-recorded by a ceremonial magician. Published here are the results of these ontological experiments.

This diploma thesis discusses methods of dictionary learning to inpaint missing sections in the audio signal. There was theoretically analyzed and practically used algorithms K-SVD and INK-SVD for dictionary learning. These dictionaries have been applied to the reconstruction of audio signals using OMP (Orthogonal Matching Pursuit). Furthermore, there was proposed an algorithm for selecting the stationary segments and their subsequent use as training data for K-SVD and INK-SVD. In the practical part of thesis have been observed efficiency with training set selection from whole signal compared with algorithm for stationary segmentation used. The influence of mutual coherence on the quality of reconstruction with incoherent dictionary was also studied. With created scripts for multiple testing in Matlab, there was performed comparison of these methods on genre distinct songs.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to design an architecture of the embedded device that will be used for controlling DAW software in recording studio. First of all, attention is given to a brief summary of the necessary knowledge which is needed to design such kind of device. Af- ter that follows short survey of the existing solutions and description of protocols which can be used for communication with the recording software. Then, subsequent part of the thesis builds upon these foundations and further elaborates the device architecture by me- ans of decomposing it into several modules. In fact, two hardware modules are designed and manufactured, when each of them is conceived on a separate PCB with its own microcon- troller. Then the control firmware has been implemented for each of the modules. At the end of the work an aluminium enclosure, which holds both modules, is designed. The result of this work is a functional prototype of the assembled controller which can be used for the purpose of controlling DAW software.

Abstract:
While travelling to new places, maps are often used to determine the specifics of the route to follow. This helps prepare for the journey by forming a cognitive model of the route in our minds. However, the process is predominantly visual and thus inaccessible to people who are either blind or visually impaired (BVI) or doing an activity where their eyes are otherwise engaged. This work explores effective methods of generating route overviews, which can create a similar cognitive model as visual routes, using audio. The overviews thus generated can help users plan their journey according to their preferences and prepare for it in advance. This paper explores usefulness and usability of auditory routes overviews for the BVI and draws design implications for such a system following a 2-stage study with audio and sound designers and users. The findings underline that auditory route overviews are an important tool that can assist BVI users to make more informed travel choices. A properly designed auditory display might contain an integration of different sonification methods and interaction and customisation capabilities. Findings also show that such a system would benefit from the application of a participatory design approach.

Abstract:
For patients with ineffective auditory nerve and complete hearing loss, Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) presents diversity of hearing sensations to help with sound consciousness and communication. At present, during the surgical intervention, surgeons use pre-operative patient images to determine optimal position of an ABI on cochlear nucleus on brainstem. When found, the optimal position is marked and mentally mapped by the surgeon. Next, the surgeon tries to locate the optimal position in patient’s head again and places the ABI. The aim of this project is to provide the surgeon with maximum clinical application accuracy guidance to store the optimal position for the implant, and to provide intuitive audio guidance for positioning the implant at the stored optimal position. By using three audio methods, in combination with visual information on Image-Guided Surgery (IGS), surgeon should spend less time looking at the screen, and more time focused on the patient.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The surface roughness between the wheel and rail has a huge influence on the rolling noise level. The presence of the third body such as frost or grease at the wheel-rail interface contributes towards change in adhesion coefficient resulting in the generation of acoustic noise at various levels. Therefore, it is possible to estimate adhesion conditions between the wheel and rail from the analysis of audio patterns originating from wheel-rail interaction. In this study, a new approach to estimate adhesion condition is proposed which takes rolling noise as input. Acoustic sensors (Behringer B-5 condenser microphone) for audio data acquisition were installed on a scaled bogie test rig. The cardioid configuration of the sensor was chosen for picking up the source signal while avoiding the surround sound. The test rig was operated at the speed of 40 and 60 rpm multiple times in both dry and wet friction conditions. The proposition behind running the setup several times was to get a large set of acoustic signals under different adhesion conditions because there exists no such dataset in the public repositories. 30 seconds interval of rolling noise data from the continuous audio signal was extracted as samples for the training W-RICE model. Each sample was pre-processed using the Librosa python package to extract seven basic features/signatures: zero-crossing rate, spectral centroid, spectral bandwidth, spectral roll-off, MFCCs (Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients), RMS (root-mean-square) energy and Chroma frequencies. These features were used as input to an MLP (Multi-Layered Perceptron) neural network and trained for four different classes (dry and wet conditions with speed of 40 rpm and 60 rpm each). MLP model training and testing were implemented in Keras deep learning library. MLPs can automatically learn useful and meaningful relationships among the input features for classifying the input audio sample to one of the output classes/categories. For four output categories considered, 100% classification accuracy was achieved on the test set while accuracies of 99.56%, 73.24%, and 63.59% were achieved for three validation sets consisting of audio samples of varying noise levels.

Abstract:
School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) remains difficult to measure because of high sensitivity and response bias. However, most SRGBV measurement relies on face-to-face (FTF) survey administration, which is susceptible to increased social desirability bias. Widely used in research on sensitive topics, Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interview (ACASI) allows subjects to respond to pre-recorded questions on a computerized device, providing respondents with privacy and confidentiality. This brief contains the findings from a large-scale study conducted in Uganda in 2019 where primary grade 3 students were randomly selected to complete surveys using either ACASI or FTF administration. The surveys covered school climate, gender attitudes, social-emotional learning, and experiences of SRGBV. Through this study, we find that although most survey responses were comparable between ACASI and FTF groups, the reporting of experiences of sexual violence differed drastically: 43% of students in the FTF group versus 77% of students in the ACASI group reported experiencing sexual violence in the past school term. We also find that factor structures are similar for data collected with ACASI compared with data collected FTF, though there is weaker evidence for construct validity for both administration modes. We conclude that ACASI is a valuable tool in measuring sensitive sub-topics of SRGBV and should be utilized over FTF administration, although further psychometric testing of these surveys is recommended.
