Abstract:
Traditional audio description (AD) is giving way to integrated audio description in which media accessibility is no longer an add-on but built in from the start in collaboration with the artistic team. As directors and producers take a greater interest in making their work accessible to audience members with a sensory impairment, how are the power dynamics altered between the stakeholders? The idea of abusive forms of translation advanced by Lewis (1985) and Nornes (1999) is reconsidered, together with the sanctity of the source text (ST). Also assessed is the impact on the role and hence the training needs of the professional audio describer. Using data from research projects developed by Extant, the UK’s leading professional performing arts company of visually impaired people, and from the European research project ADLAB PRO, this paper concludes that a describer’s skills and competences are still required even with the evolution of integrated AD.

In post-production process, there is one process that is not as well known as the video editing process, the addition of animation, special effects enrichment, motion graphics or audio editing and audio mixing, an important process which is rarely realized called Color Correction or Color Grading. Various software have been made to handle this process, ranging from additional filters are already available for free in any editing software, to high-end devices worth billions of dollars dedicated for specifically conducting Color Correction. Apple Color is one of the software included in the purchase of Final Cut Studio package which also include Final Cut Pro for Video Editing, Soundtrack Pro for Sound Editing and Mixing, and Motion for compositing. Apple's Color is specially designed for color correction tasks after previously edited in Final Cut Pro. This paper is designed to introduce Apple's software as well as analyze the feasibility of Apple Color as a professional device in the world of production, especially post-production. Some professional color correction software will be compared briefly with Apple Color to get an objective conclusion.

Abstract:
Karen Smith (1966–2017) had long been interested in altered states of consciousness. In seeking help with her own psychiatric illness, she came across Agrippa’s works on occult philosophy and the use of spoken-word formulas for entering and exiting differential states of being. These steps over the psychic threshold are known as adorcism and exorcism – the summoning and banishing of demons or spirits. Over the course of a week in 1999, she decided to try out some of Agrippa’s techniques. She chose to be possessed and then dispossessed by the seven spirits associated with the planets of classical antiquity. She documented one ritual per day. For each action, she used the same devices – a bathtub filled with water, a lamp and an audio cassette player with a tape featuring incantations pre-recorded by a ceremonial magician. Published here are the results of these ontological experiments.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explores the phenomenon that pro-adverbs of manner are cross-linguistically used to mark transitions from one activity to another. In Estonian, the pro-adverb nii is used for this purpose. Among Estonian refugees in Sweden, an activity transition is frequently marked with soo. Both nii and soo originally had the same semantic meaning ‘like this/that, in this way, so’, even though soo merely in its source language German. The article argues that the deictic pro-adverbs of manner are especially suitable for the task of marking activity transitions because they can be applied at the boundaries of verbal as well as non-verbal activities. The reason for the existence of this pattern seems to lie in the general necessity in human interaction to jointly move from one activity to another and the exophoric deictic capacity of pro-adverbs. The study explores audio- and video-recorded examples with regard to the sequencing of social actions accomplished by the participants in the verbal as well as the bodily domain.

Abstract:
In this article we show how it is possible to use Channel Theory (Barwise and Seligman, 1997) for modeling the process of information extraction realized by audiences of audio-visual contents. To do this, we rely on the concepts pro- posed by Channel Theory and, especially, its treatment of representational systems. We then show how the information that an agent is capable of extracting from the content depends on the number of channels he is able to establish between the content and the set of classifications he is able to discriminate. The agent can endeavor the extraction of information through these channels from the totality of content; however, we discuss the advantages of extracting from its constituents in order to obtain a greater number of informational items that represent it. After showing how the extraction process is endeavored for each channel, we propose a method of representation of all the informative values an agent can obtain from a content using a matrix constituted by the channels the agent is able to establish on the content (source classifications), and the ones he can understand as individual (destination classifications). We finally show how this representation allows reflecting the evolution of the informative items through the evolution of audio-visual content.

Abstract:
Background: The bone conduction implant (BCI) is an active transcutaneous bone conduction device where the transducer has direct contact to the bone, and the skin is intact. Sixteen patients have been implanted with the BCI with a planned follow-up of 5 years. This study reports on hearing, quality of life, and objective measures up to 36 months of follow-up in 10 patients. Method: Repeated measures were performed at fitting and after 1, 3, 6, 12, and 36 months including sound field warble tone thresholds, speech recognition thresholds in quiet, speech recognition score in noise, and speech-to-noise thresholds for 50% correct words with adaptive noise. Three quality of life questionnaires were used to capture the benefit from the intervention, appreciation from different listening situations, and the ability to interact with other people when using the BCI. The results were compared to the unaided situation and a Ponto Pro Power on a soft band. The implant functionality was measured by nasal sound pressure, and the retention force from the audio processor against the skin was measured using a specially designed audio processor and a force gauge. Results: Audiometry and quality of life questionnaires using the BCI or the Ponto Pro Power on a soft band were significantly improved compared to the unaided situation and the results were statistically supported. There was generally no significant difference between the two devices. The nasal sound pressure remained stable over the study period and the force on the skin from the audio processor was 0.71 ± 0.22 N (mean ± 1 SD). Conclusion: The BCI improves the hearing ability for tones and speech perception in quiet and in noise for the indicated patients. The results are stable over a 3-year period, and the patients subjectively report a beneficial experience from using the BCI. The transducer performance and contact to the bone is unchanged over time, and the skin area under the audio processor remains without complications during the 3-year follow-up.

Abstract:
Worldwide ecosystem decline is a pressing issue that has led governments to sign up to biodiversity-related targets, but little is known about what drives individuals’ conservation behaviour. This study uses a qualitative methodology (grounded theory) to understand what leads to pro-nature attitudes and behaviours. Twenty participants (10 men; 10 women) underwent semi-structured interviews and audio files were transcribed and coded to form the basis of theory. The authors propose a model based on interview material in which species with intrinsic value (i.e., deemed valuable in their own right, not for their usefulness to humans) are within the bounds of moral consideration. Individuals with generalised beliefs about the intrinsic value of non-human species expressed moral concern for human-caused impacts on nature. External prompts, including social messages, were associated with sporadic pro-nature behaviours. Individuals engaging in sustained behaviour showed evidence of having internalised moral standard of pro-nature actions and also appeared to fashion a social environment that would sustain and enhance their moral views. We discuss the implications of our findings with respect to conservation campaign messaging and government policy.

Abstract:
The article states that the reform of contemporary vocal education based on the principles of civilization integration of different, sometimes quite distant from each other, musical cultures, traditions and practices on the one hand, and the necessity for free access to the world vocal-performing and vocal-pedagogical experience on the other. In this regard, information and communication technologies (ICT) are becoming one of the most effective components of the educational process in primary specialized artistic educational institutions in the context of non-classical contemporary vocal. In the article, this issue is considered from the attitude of activity and culture appropriate approaches to learning. Based on the analysis of scientific and pedagogical sources on contemporary vocal pedagogy in the context of the use of ICT, the following methods and their respective means are separated: the methods of familiarization (3D technology, animation technology, audiovisual ICT); methods of work on vocal techniques (audio, visual and audiovisual ICT, computer, synthesizers, dictaphone, etc.); methods of work on the features of musical language and improvisation (audio, visual and audiovisual ICT, computer, video content, synthesizers, iReal-Pro, etc.); methods of preparing vocal repertoire (software for downloading, editing and storing information, notes and audio editors, etc.); methods of preparation and implementation of public performance (3D technology, animation technology, graphic and audio editors, video camera, voice recorder, dictaphone, video content, computer, mobile devices, etc.); methods of communication (computer, mobile devices, e-mail, instant messaging technology, social networks, messengers, video and audio conferencing systems, Internet, etc.), monitoring methods (video camera, dictaphone, memory cards and storage devices, etc.) The conclusions state that the methodological findings regarding the use of ICT in teaching of contemporary vocal are fragmented and do not constitute systematic methodological knowledge, what actualizes the problem of further research on the use of ICT and protection from artificial intelligence threats in the process of formation a contemporary non-classical vocal-performing thesaurus at pupils of specialized art educational institutions and institutions of non-formal art education.

Abstract:
This article presents an exploratory, empirical investigation of one under-studied type of user-generated content: independent audio podcasting. While other forms of user-generated content, particularly blogging, have received significant attention from scholars, research on podcasting, particularly on podcasters themselves, is still uncommon. I address this gap through the development of a preliminary profile of independent podcasters and their motivations for podcasting. Results from a web-based qualitative questionnaire indicate that podcasters fit the profile of Pro-Ams (older, educated, professional males) working primarily in the niche markets of the long tail. The study found six major categories of motivations for podcasting: technology/media, content, interpersonal, personal, process, and financial. Comparisons are also drawn between motivations of the podcasters reported in this study and previous research on the motivations of bloggers.

Abstract:
Objective. To validate an audio-video (AV) method of food journaling, in a free-living scenario, compared to direct, weighed food assessment. Design and Setting. Data were collected in a cafeteria. Meals, selected by participants (n=30), were documented using the AV method: participants video-recorded their tray while audio-recording a description of their selected meal, after which the research team digitally weighed each food item and created an itemized diary record of the food. Variables Measured. Data from the AV method and from the weighed food diaries were transcribed and entered into a nutrition software analysis program (Nutribase Pro 10.0). Nutrient outputs were compared between the two methods including kilocalories, macronutrients, and selected micronutrients. Analyses. Using mean scores for each variable, Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman’s correlation coefficients were conducted. Interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated for absolute agreement between the two methods to assess interrater reliability. Results. With the exception of Vitamin E and total weight, nutrient values were highly correlated between methods and were statistically significant given alpha = 0.05, power = 0.95, and effect size of 0.70. Conclusions. The AV method may be a meaningful alternative to diary recording in a free-living setting.

Abstract:
Early popular and theoretical work in popular music studies often bestowed implicit or explicit legitimacy on forms of music cultivating or preserving a ‘live’, ‘unplugged’, ‘acoustic’ and hence ‘authentic’ sound. Over the past fifteen years, much popular music scholarship (Frith 1986; Goodwin 1992; Cutler 1984) has rightly problematised this approach. It is important to note, however, that interpretations of popular music texts or scenes that depict the electrification or digitalisation of sound as uncomplicatedly pro-social or progressive remain problematic themselves. Within popular music production today, few areas exist where these aesthetics of recorded music have failed to penetrate. But there is one sub-field of popular music where the characteristic sounds of recording studio technology are still relatively new. It warrants the attention not only of those engaged in the study of popular music, but also of those involved in the exploration of virtual environments. This sub-field is the contemporary stage musical.

Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) is a course that is required during the third year in the mechanical engineering curriculum at Binghamton University. The primary objective of the course is to educate students in the procedures of computer-aided engineering design. The solid modeling and analysis program Pro/Engineer™ (PTC®) is used as the basis of this course. As a means to this objective, students must be trained to use the Pro/Engineer™ software. We created a series of video lectures using Camtasia Studio (TechSmith®) to accomplish the Pro/Engineer™ training. As the literature for the software says: “Camtasia Studio is a complete solution for quickly creating professional-looking videos of your PC desktop activity.” Thirteen videos were created for this course, which incorporated audio combined with PowerPoint™ slides. The video files (avi's) are distributed to students on five CD's. This article describes the structure of the course and how the videos are integrated into it. Also included is a brief overview of the creation of the videos. Results of a survey of student satisfaction with the video format that was used in the course are presented.

Abstract The purpose of this research is to make a 3D animated video that is used to provide information about the ethics of driving at intersections and roundabouts in accordance with the rules that apply to the public or vehicle users, in order to reduce the level of traffic accidents. The making of this 3-dimensional animated video starts with the initial stage, namely determining the idea, the data collection stage, to designing the storyboard. After that, the modeling, texturing, rigging animating, and rendering stage are carried out, using the Blender and Makehuman applications which then produce several 3-dimensional animated video pieces. After the rendering process is complete, the next stage is final editing by providing text, images, transition effects using the Adobe Premiere Pro application and adding audio as voice over to the story script. The last stage is the final rendering which produces a 3-dimensional animated video in the MP4 file format. A casual listener may not have the relevant cognitive tools to relate to electroacoustic music as an independent art form. Even music students who have had several years' formal training may not know how to listen purposefully to it. The authors investigate the hypothesis that by engaging in the composition of musique concrète, students will become more informed listeners to electroacoustic music in general. This study describes a teacher and ten 16-year-old high school students who use a digital audio editor (Cool Edit Pro) to manipulate sound and to structure sound events. A variety of teaching approaches are tested. Having experienced the creative process, the participants display a growing ability to engage in higher-order critical thinking skills in relation to electroacoustic music.

Abstract:
Purpose Evidence suggests that patient-reported outcomes (PROs) from randomized trials in oncology may not influence clinical decision making and patient choice. Reasons for this are currently unclear and little is known about patients' interpretation of PROs. This study assessed patients' understanding of multidimensional PROs in a graphical format. Patients and Methods Semistructured interviews in which patients interpreted a series of graphs depicting simple, then multiple different hypothetical PROs associated with two treatments with identical chances of survival were audio recorded. The interviewer and a blinded observer (listening to audio recordings) scored patients' understanding of the graphs. Logistic regression examined the associations between patient understanding of the graphs and clinical and sociodemographic details. Results One hundred thirty-two patients with esophageal and gastric cancer were interviewed and 115 understood the first two graphs depicting different PROs of two treatments (87%; 95% CI,81 to 93). Simultaneous interpretation of adverse and beneficial treatment effects was achieved by 74 (66%; 95% CI, 57 to 75). Graphs showing complex, longitudinal data were correctly interpreted by 97 (73%; 95% CI, 66 to 81) and 108 (81%; 95% CI, 75 to 88), respectively. Univariable analyses demonstrated associations between patient understanding and patient age, educational level, and cancer site (P ≤ .02 for all); however, in a multivariable model each of these associations was attenuated. Conclusion Most patients understand graphical multidimensional PROs, although a smaller majority were able to interpret more complex, or simultaneous, presentations. Additional work is needed to define methods for communicating clinical and PRO data from trials to allow patients to make informed treatment choices.

Every year, the US government detains thousands of noncitizens in removal proceedings on the basis that they might pose a threat to public safety if released during the pendency of their removal proceedings. Using original audio recording data on immigration bond hearings, this study examines immigration judges’ determinations regarding which noncitizens pose a danger to the community. My multivariate analysis that controls for a variety of detainee background characteristics and criminal-conviction-related measures produced three main findings. First, I find that Central Americans are more likely to be deemed dangerous than non-Central Americans. Second, I find that detainees with attorneys are less likely to be deemed dangerous than pro se detainees. Finally, my analysis shows that whereas felony and violent convictions are associated with higher odds of being deemed dangerous, the recency of criminal convictions and the total number of convictions are not predictive of danger determinations. Together, these findings provide new insights into the socio-legal construction of immigrant criminality.

Abstract:
“Protestant Supremacy,” the phrase that evoked the majority of commentary in this forum, is a neologism. I began researching Christian Slavery in 2005, but I did not coin “Protestant Supremacy” until 2013. I have an audio recording of the first time I used the phrase. It was during my dissertation defense and I was explaining why I felt it was wrong to use the terms “pro” or “antislavery” to describe the slavery debates of the seventeenth century. “Spiritual equality does not equal antislavery,” I said at the time, when I refusing to draw a straight line from Quaker founder George Fox to later Quaker abolitionists. I needed a new way to frame the conversation. “I could call it ‘Protestant Supremacy,’” I said. “It isn't White Supremacy in the seventeenth-century. … [Instead,] you have a contest between the ideology of Protestant Supremacy and the ideology of Christian Slavery. … That's the conversation that's important.”

Abstract:
Objective: The goal of treatment for individuals with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is to improve physical, psychological, and social health. Outcomes of treatment are rarely measured from the patient’s perspective. The aim of the study was to develop a conceptual framework for a patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument for individuals with clefts (CLEFT-Q) by developing an in-depth understanding of issues that individuals consider to be important. Design: The qualitative methodology of interpretive description was used. Setting, Participants, and Intervention: We performed 136 individual in-depth interviews with participants with clefts of any age, presenting for cleft care, across 6 countries. Parents were involved if the child was more comfortable. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and coded using constant comparison. The data were used to develop a refined conceptual framework. Results: Participants described concepts of interest in 3 top-level domains, each of which included subdomains: appearance (face, nose, nostrils, teeth, lips, jaw, cleft lip scar), health-related quality of life (psychological, social, school, speech-related distress), and facial function (speech, eating/drinking). Participants were able to describe changes over time with regard to the 3 domains. Conclusions: A conceptual framework of concepts of interest to individuals with CL/P formed the basis of the scales in the CLEFT-Q. Each subdomain represents an independently functioning scale. Understanding what matters to patients is essential in guiding PRO measurement.

Abstract:
Background and Objectives: The prognostic impact of ventricular fibrillation (VF) recurrences after a successful shock in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA) is still poorly understood, and some evidence suggests a potential pro-arrhythmic effect of chest compressions in this setting. In the present analysis, we looked at the short-term and long-term prognosis of VF recurrences in OOHCA. And their potential association with chest compressions. Materials and Methods: The Progetto Vita, prospectively collecting data on all resuscitation efforts in the Piacenza province (Italy), was used for the present analysis. From the 461 OOHCAs found in a shockable rhythm, only those with optimal ECG tracings and good audio recordings (160) were assessed. Rhythms other than VF post-shock were analyzed five seconds after shock delivery and survival to hospital admission, hospital discharge, and long-term survival data over a 14-year follow-up were collected. Results: Population mean age was 64.4 ± 16.9 years, and 31.9% of all patients were female. Mean time to EMS arrival was 5.9 ± 4.5 min. Short- and long-term survival without neurological impairment were higher in patients without VF recurrence when compared to patients with VF recurrence, independently from the pre-induction rhythm (p < 0.001). After shock delivery, VF recurrence was higher when chest compressions were resumed early after discharge and more vigorously. Conclusions: VF recurrences after a shock could worsen short and long-term survival. The potential pro-arrhythmic effect of chest compressions should be factored in when considering the real risks and benefits of this procedure.

Abstract:
Speech-based web search where no keyboard or screens are available to present search engine results is becoming ubiquitous, mainly through the use of mobile devices and intelligent assistants such as Apple's HomePod, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. Currently, these intelligent assistants do not maintain a lengthy information exchange. They do not track context or present information suitable for an audio-only channel, and do not interact with the user in a multi-turn conversation. Understanding how users would interact with such an audio-only interaction system in multi-turn information seeking dialogues, and what users expect from these new systems, are unexplored in search settings. In particular, the knowledge on how to present search results over an audio-only channel and which interactions take place in this new search paradigm is crucial to incorporate while producing usable systems [9, 2, 8]. Thus, constructing insight into the conversational structure of information seeking processes provides researchers and developers opportunities to build better systems while creating a research agenda and directions for future advancements in Spoken Conversational Search (SCS). Such insight has been identified as crucial in the growing SCS area. At the moment, limited understanding has been acquired for SCS, for example, how the components interact, how information should be presented, or how task complexity impacts the interactivity or discourse behaviours. We aim to address these knowledge gaps. This thesis outlines the breadth of SCS and forms a manifesto advancing this highly interactive search paradigm with new research directions including prescriptive notions for implementing identified challenges [3]. We investigate SCS through quantitative and qualitative designs: (i) log and crowdsourcing experiments investigating different interaction and results presentation styles [1, 6], and (ii) the creation and analysis of the first SCS dataset and annotation schema through designing and conducting an observational study of information seeking dialogues [11, 5, 7]. We propose new research directions and design recommendations based on the triangulation of three different datasets and methods: the log analysis to identify practical challenges and limitations of existing systems while informing our future observational study; the crowdsourcing experiment to validate a new experimental setup for future search engine results presentation investigations; and the observational study to establish the SCS dataset (SCSdata), form the first Spoken Conversational Search Annotation Schema (SCoSAS), and study interaction behaviours for different task complexities. Our principle contributions are based on our observational study for which we developed a novel methodology utilising a qualitative design [10]. We show that existing information seeking models may be insufficient for the new SCS search paradigm because they inadequately capture meta-discourse functions and the system's role as an active agent. Thus, the results indicate that SCS systems have to support the user through discourse functions and be actively involved in the users' search process. This suggests that interactivity between the user and system is necessary to overcome the increased complexity which has been imposed upon the user and system by the constraints of the audio-only communication channel [4]. We then present the first schematic model for SCS which is derived from the SCoSAS through the qualitative analysis of the SCSdata. In addition, we demonstrate the applicability of our dataset by investigating the effect of task complexity on interaction and discourse behaviour. Lastly, we present SCS design recommendations and outline new research directions for SCS. The implications of our work are practical, conceptual, and methodological. The practical implications include the development of the SCSdata, the SCoSAS, and SCS design recommendations. The conceptual implications include the development of a schematic SCS model which identifies the need for increased interactivity and pro-activity to overcome the audio-imposed complexity in SCS. The methodological implications include the development of the crowdsourcing framework, and techniques for developing and analysing SCS datasets. In summary, we believe that our findings can guide researchers and developers to help improve existing interactive systems which are less constrained, such as mobile search, as well as more constrained systems such as SCS systems.

Abstract:
Abandoned children is one of the problems faced by Padang city. Many reasons make the number of abanded children still high. Although, the news about abandoned children have been posted in newspaper, magazine even online and social media, but seen that they just inform in partially. Therefore the researchers conducted a project on presenting the data on the picture of abanded children in padang in form of radio feature. It is expected that this radio feature can give useful information about the reason why they “work on the street”, the life that they run everyday. Hence it is hope that it can touch the human care of people and government to find the best solution for them. The data was gotten from the result of interview by using recorder tools. Then Cool Edit Pro 2.1 application was used to edit and mix the voice . Moreover this project applied the stages of making radio feature likes pre-production, production and post-production. The result of thisl project were in form of audio, radio feature with 15 minutes duration, and the English script with 756 word.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As part of its Digital Single Market strategy, the European Commission envisages to take action aimed at eradicating the practice of blocking one’s website to persons established or residing in a particular EU Member State. To that extent, a 2015 proposal for a regulation on the portability of online streaming services and a 2016 proposal for a regulation on geo-blocking outside the audio-visual context have been presented, the scope of which will be analysed in this paper.Although the proposed Regulations would tackle topical problems in EU e commerce and thus offer a necessary step forward in enhancing cross-border trade in the European Union, their envisaged regulatory approach raises important concerns from enforcement and rules’ circumvention points of view.Taking stock of those two concerns, the paper will reflect upon ways to mitigate their detrimental effects. Arguing that the geo-blocking proposals already contain the basic tools for such mitigation, the paper advocates the adoption of a more streamlined EU competition law and e-commerce regulation enforcement strategy, complemented by a “technologically more pro-active” EU law interpretation stance to e-commerce at the EU level.

Abstract:
In today's modern era, online information technology is widely used by companies or other institutions to convey information and serve as promotional tools, using audio-visual media with a 2-dimensional animation-based method that is able to attract audiences. To get this information, you can access it in various social media. SMK Kartika X-1 West Jakarta is a private vocational education institution that still uses printed media such as benner, brochures, banners in the form of images and text as information media. However, using this print media to provide information is less effective because of its less extensive reach. Based on the above problems, a study is needed to design a video company profile to complement the school's information media. This research uses methods such as: problem analysis, data collection, SWOT analysis, media production concept (KPM). The design of this video is assisted by editor software such as Adobe Illustrator (Ai), Adobe After Effects (Ae) and Adobe Premiere Pro (Pr). This information video will be implemented through YouTube and social media of the Official SMK Kartika X-1. With this video company profile it can help this school in introducing the school profile.
