This thesis deals with the problem of estimating the probability of failure of a system from computer simulations. When only an expensive-to-simulate model of the system is available, the budget for simulations is usually severely limited, which is incompatible with the use of classical Monte Carlo methods. In fact, estimating a small probability of failure with very few simulations, as required in some complex industrial problems, is a particularly difficult topic. Polygonella myriophylla (Polygonaceae) is a clonal shrub listed as endangered and narrowly endemic to pyrogenic scrub ecosystems in central Florida. It is almost restricted to gaps within the matrix of shrubs in the scrub but also occurs along adjacent road-side habitats. This thesis bridges the gap between two popular methods of achieving more efficient online experiments, sequential tests and variance reduction with pre-experiment data. Through simulations, it is shown that there is efficiency to be gained in using control-variates sequentially along with the popular mixture Sequential Probability Ratio Test. More efficient tests lead to faster decisions and smaller sample sizes required. The technique proposed is also tested using empirical data on users from the music streaming service Spotify.
