Abstract:
Some research on the causes of bank failure finds that failing institutions had large proportions of problem loans prior to failure, and that the extra costs of administering these loans reduced the bank performance. At this moment, if bank management goes after maximizing one’s utility, not the bank performance, in addition confronting from rising competitive environment, it would be quite dangerous. So, this article studies the impact of problem loan, ownership structure, and market structure upon the bank performance with the basis of cost efficiency. Empirical results show that problem loan, ownership structure, and market structure have a significant effect upon the bank performance

Abstract:
Research have been done based on KSP management and KSP performance. Problem loan increased in some KSP. The study proposed to further explore why this condition happened by analysis relationship between performance loan management, liquidity and funding. Research result presents liquidity rate of entity 68,81% as expected, funding rate 64,23% as expected and Loan management rate of the entity is 65,05% as expected. Result of result also present that the rate of three variables still under value as expected (more than 80%) thatswhy still need to be improve. Correlation rate between liquidity and loan management is 0,212, determination coefficient is 0,0449 or giving impact more or less than 4,49%. There is no correlation between Funding and loan management (rate is -0,0276). T-calculate is less than T-table. Correlation rate between liquidity, funding and loan management simultaneously is 0,093. This shows that liquidity factor together with funding factor giving impact to loan management more significant than partially. Impact of the two variables is 9,3%. As a result, to increase loan management rate will be more effective if increasing liquidity rate and funding rate to be implemented together other than partially instead.

Abstract:
A 2016 article in the Nation outlined that in the United States the average Black family would need 228 years to build comparable wealth to the average white family. Today, achieving the dream of higher education has posed many threats to the Hispanic and African American communities. In order to achieve the dream, many minority students receive student loans to fund their higher education pursuits with hopes that future employment will afford repayment. However, most do not realize the risks. Student loan debt is a severe and mounting problem in the United States. In the United States, seven million student loan borrowers are now in default. Forty-five percent of college students obtain some sort of credit card debt. Lack of knowledge on financial literacy and student loan debt management is a serious issue. This article presents findings that support making financial literacy courses mandatory for college students just like Mathematics and English courses, especially at minority-serving colleges and universities.

Abstract:
AbstractEnterprises use working capital to meet the needs of the organizations in order to perform operational activities. Hence, in order to produce optimal results, companies require sufficient working capital. Medium-scale industries have great potential in driving the economy through output and employment. As such, the purpose of this research is to analyze the working capital management policy of mediumsized business. This research employs literature study method by compiling relevant literature on the research problems. The data analysis process of this research is divided into three stages: (1) data reduction, which includes summarizing, classifying main points, focusing on important facts, and finding patterns; (2) data display, which includes data compilation and systematic data presentation; and (3) conclusion drawing and verification, which presents the research conclusions on the problem statements. Research findings suggest that working capital policy is dependant upon loan term and interest rate, which means that longer loan period leads to higher interest. Long-term loan of working capital requires debtors to pay bigger interest than short-term loan, because creditors must take into consideration the risks of uncertain future. Companies with short cash conversion cycle suggest fast retrieval of accounts receivable, good inventory management, and slower payment to supplier while maintaining corporate credibility.

Abstract:
For bank, loan is one of its core business. In addition to profitability, loan also contains credit risk. Accordingly, Financial Services Authority (OJK) as the supervisory authority of Indonesian banks enforces the credit regulation in Indonesia. This is understandable given that improper credit management may result in bank’s revenue from credit sector, which may disturb the bank’s health due to the decrease of bank's revenue. Therefore, resolution of problem loan is priority for banks. The present study was categorized as normative legal study, the data were analyzed qualitatively. Various attempts were maed to resolve problem loans. One of them is through the filing of small claim court. A number of easiness can be chosen because small claim court is relatively quick and cheap. In the future, the government is expected to provide more pathways to make small claim court, including increasing the maximum nominal of the charge.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of institutional investors on the cost of bank loans using US bank loan data from 1995 to 2012. Design/methodology/approach – The cost of bank loans is analyzed with regard to loan spreads, collateral requirements, and the number of prepayment covenants. Findings – This paper finds that, first, holding institutional ownership constant, institutional control is positively related to the cost of bank loans, implying that strong institutional control intensifies conflicts between large shareholders and lenders. Second, institutional holdings are negatively related to the cost of bank loans. These results indicate that institutional monitoring reduces the agency problem between shareholders and managers. Originality/value – This paper suggests that the trade-off between institutional monitoring and institutional control jointly determines the effect of institutional investors on the cost of bank loans. Moreover, lenders should consider large shareholders and their influence when making lending decisions.

Abstract:
For traditional perpetual American put options under regime-switching models with positive risk-free interest rates, optimal stopping usually can occur in any regime. Nonetheless, if the risk-free interest rates are allowed to equal zero (the interest rate may drop to zero sometimes in reality), there may exist “continuation regimes” within which optimal stopping can never occur, that is, within which stopping is never optimal. A natural problem is “regime classification,” that is, determination of all continuation regimes. In “Regime Classification and Stock Loan Valuation,” Ning Cai and Wei Zhang develop a unified, fixed point approach to solving this regime classification problem under general regime-switching exponential Levy models with any finite numbers of regimes and general Levy types. Applying this result, they also provide a unified framework for the valuation of infinite maturity stock loans under general regime-switching exponential Levy models.

Abstract:
This paper studies the responses among different types of mortgage brokers to occupational licensing regulations. By explicitly accounting for heterogeneities between sole and corporate brokers, we find evidence that sole brokers respond to financial regulatory oversight by applying a more stringent screening process in conducting brokerage activities, hence achieving better loan performances. Specifically, loans originated through sole brokers exhibit higher quality on an array of credit-relevant characteristics, including those reported and unreported to future investors. By contrast, we find no such regulatory effect on corporate brokers who tend to rely extensively on reported characteristics that are critical to the subsequent loan securitization at the expense of unreported information despite the latter indicating potential risks. Hence, the agency problem among sole brokers can be mitigated by the consolidated financial requirement for occupational licensing. However, such provision is ineffective in governing corporate brokers. Additionally, welfare gains associated with the occupational licensing regulation are achieved at the expense of prospective borrowers paying a higher loan price and having reduced credit access. Stricter licensing regulations may induce welfare loss related to credit rationing as reasonable loan applications are not funded, including those with potentially lower default risk. Eroglu, Fatma Esra. "Service Models For Airline Revenue Management Problems." Master's thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613490/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the seat inventory control problem is studied for airlines from the perspective of a risk-averse decision maker. There are only a few studies in the revenue management literature that consider the risk factor. Most of the studies aim at finding the optimal seat allocations while maximizing the expected revenue and do not take the variability of the revenue and hence a risk measure into account. This study aims to decrease the variance of the revenue by increasing the capacity utilization called load factor in the revenue management literature. In addition to expected revenue, load factor is an important performance measure the state companies work with. For this purpose, two types of models with load factor formulations are proposed. This thesis is the first study in the revenue management literature for the airline industry that uses the load factor formulations in the mathematical models. It is an advantage to work with load factor formulations since the models with load factor formulations are much easier to formulate and solve as compared to other risk sensitive models in the literature. The results of the proposed models are evaluated by using simulation for a sample network under different scenarios. The models we propose allow us to control the variability of revenue by changing the used capacity of the aircraft. This is at the expense of a decrease in the revenue under some scenarios. The models we propose perform satisfactorily under all scenarios and they are strongly recommended to be used especially for the small-scale airline companies and state companies and for scheduling new flights even in large scale, well established airline companies.

Celebi, Emre. "MODELS OF EFFICIENT CONSUMER PRICING SCHEMES IN ELECTRICITY MARKETS." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/811.

Full text
Abstract:
Suppliers in competitive electricity markets regularly respond to prices that change hour by hour or even more frequently, but most consumers respond to price changes on a very different time scale, i. e. they observe and respond to changes in price as reflected on their monthly bills. This thesis examines mixed complementarity programming models of equilibrium that can bridge the speed of response gap between suppliers and consumers, yet adhere to the principle of marginal cost pricing of electricity. It develops a computable equilibrium model to estimate the time-of-use (TOU) prices that can be used in retail electricity markets. An optimization model for the supply side of the electricity market, combined with a price-responsive geometric distributed lagged demand function, computes the TOU prices that satisfy the equilibrium conditions. Monthly load duration curves are approximated and discretized in the context of the supplier's optimization model. The models are formulated and solved by the mixed complementarity problem approach. It is intended that the models will be useful (a) in the regular exercise of setting consumer prices (i. e. , TOU prices that reflect the marginal cost of electricity) by a regulatory body (e. g. , Ontario Energy Board) for jurisdictions (e. g. , Ontario) where consumers' prices are regulated, but suppliers offer into a competitive market, (b) for forecasting in markets without price regulation, but where consumers pay a weighted average of wholesale price, (c) in evaluation of the policies regarding time-of-use pricing compared to the single pricing, and (d) in assessment of the welfare changes due to the implementation of TOU prices.

Abstract:
A key challenge of the learning sciences is moving research results into practice. Educators on the front lines perceive little value in the outputs of education research and demand more “usable knowledge”. This work explores the potential instead of usable artifacts to translate knowledge into practice, adding scientists as stakeholders in an interaction design process. The contributions are two effective systems, the scientific and contextual principles in their design, and a research model for scientific research through interaction design. College student study practices are the domain chosen for the development of these methods. Iterative ethnographic fieldwork identified two systems that would be likely to advance both learning in practice and knowledge for applying the employed theories in general. Nudge was designed to improve students’ study time management by regularly emailing students with explicit recommended study activities. It reconceptualizes the syllabus into an interactive guide that fits into modern students' attention streams. Examplify was designed to improve how students learn from worked example problems by modularizing them into steps and scaffolding their metacognitive behaviors though problem-solving and self-explanation prompts. It combines these techniques in a way that is exceedingly easy to author, using existing answer keys and students' self-evaluations. Nudge and Examplify were evaluated experimentally over a full semester of a lecture-based introductory chemistry course. Nudge messages increased students’ sense of achievement and interacted with students’ existing time management skills to improve exam grades for poorer students. Among students who could choose whether to receive them, 80% did. Students with access to Examplify had higher exam scores (d=0.26), especially on delayed measures of learning (d=0.40). A key design decision in Examplify was not clearly resolvable by existing theory and so was tested experimentally by comparing two variants, one without prompts to solve the steps. The variant without problem solving was less effective (d=0.77) and less used, while usage rates of the variant with problem solving increased over time. These results support the use of the design methods employed and provide specific empirical recommendations for future designs of these and similar systems for implementing theory in practice.

Abstract:
This study intends to assess determinants of nonperforming loans. The mixed research approach was adopted for the study. Survey was conducted with professionals engaged in both private and state owned Banks in Ethiopia holding different positions using a self administered questionnaire. In addition, the study used structured review of documents and records of banks and in-depth interview of senior bank officials in the Ethiopian banking industry. The findings of the study shows that poor credit assessment, failed loan monitoring, underdeveloped credit culture, lenient credit terms and conditions, aggressive lending, compromised integrity, weak institutional capacity, unfair competition among banks, willful default by borrowers and their knowledge limitation, fund diversion for unintended purpose, over/under financing by banks ascribe to the causes of loan default.

This study aims at the management of elements in designing instructional materials for translating word problem into a system of linear equations in two variables according to the theories of cognitive load and multi-media learning. Both the experimental group and the control group were given the instruction integrated with step-by-step and signaling guidance but varying in the presentation arrangement. The presentation to the experimental group was given with previous semantic splitting and horizontal symmetric arrangement. But the presentation to the control group was given with streaming arrangement in accordance with problem-solving steps to gradually relate with the subject and get the semantic meanings. This study is to investigate the effects of different arrangement for a review on the students’ performance and cognitive load. This study was carried out with a quasi-experimental design. The participants were 154 7th graders enrolled in seven classes in a junior high school in New Taipei City. Two-way ANOVA is applied for data analysis. The independent variables are "presentation arrangement" and "mathematical ability" with 3 levels (high, medium and low), while "performance" and "cognitive load" are the dependent variables. The results are as follows: (1) there’s no interaction effect contributed by different "presentation arrangement" on "performance" of students with different ability levels. There is no significance found on the main effect test for the two arrangements. (2) The experiment groups and the control groups both perform better in the posttest than in the pretest no matter on total score, combine type, compare type or change type. The results of both groups also show significant differences. As for the delayed posttest, only change type in the experiment group shows better retention effect. Each type in the control groups shows no differences on retention effect when comparing with the pretests. (3) There’s no interaction effect contributed by different instruction design on "cognitive load" of students with different abilities, either. There isn’t any significance found on the main effect test for the two arrangements. (4) No expertise reversal effect is found in either of the arrangements.

Adeogun, Margaret Olufunke. "Managing resource sharing in selected Seventh-day Adventist tertiary institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa: problems and prospects." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1910.

Abstract:
Universities in the new millennium find themselves in a knowledge-driven economy that is challenging them to produce a qualified and adaptable work force if they are to contribute to societal development. Owing to the structural change in the economy, entrepreneurs require high level scientists, professionals and technicians who not only have the capability to create and support innovations by adapting knowledge to local use but also people with managerial and lifelong learning skills. Such are they who can accelerate changes and make organizations more productive and efficient in the services they render. Consequently, universities in Sub-Saharan Africa are challenged to transform learning so as to produce graduates who have both knowledge and competencies. Such a system will create a balance between university education and the changing labour market. Satisfying these new educational demands are only possible through research and unhindered access to global information resources. Paradoxically, some private university libraries, because of limited funding, find themselves fiscally constrained in the provision of unhindered access to global stores of information particularly at a time of exponential growth both in number and cost of information resources. This had led libraries to re-examine resource sharing as a viable option to meeting the new demands placed on universities. It is for the reasons above that this study examines the practice, problems and prospects of resource-sharing in selected Seventh-day Adventist university libraries in Sub-Saharan Africa. It examines scientifically the causes of poor sharing practices that are unique to each library, the situational and environmental factors that can enhance resource sharing. It provides also research-based information that will help to determine the best ways by which each library can have greater access to information resources. There are proposals for resolving the problems, and there are recommendations for dealing with the matter on a more permanent basis. The study advances resource-sharing model called Consortium of Adventist University Libraries in Africa (CAULA) as a resource sharing network for Seventh-day Adventist libraries in Africa. The organizational structure for CAULA are outlined and discussed. The proposed cooperation is not only sustainable but also structured to provide efficiency and greater regional cooperation of SDA libraries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The article is a reflection on the legal regulation of property management of a contributory organization established by a territorial self-governing unit and the practical problems that the current legislation brings. It deals with the various legal relationships that these organizations may have to the long-term assets, which the contributory organizations use most often due to the transfer to the founder, but also due to the right of ownership, and very often also on the basis of a loan agreement. In the article I will deal with the legal regulation of these institutes and their mutual comparison.

Abstract:
AbstractAgainst the backdrop of the economically and ecologically optimal management of electrical energy systems, accurate predictions of consumption load profiles play an important role. On this basis, it is possible to plan and implement the use of controllable energy generation and storage systems as well as energy procurement with the required lead-time, taking into account the technical and contractual boundary conditions. The recorded electrical load profiles will increase considerably in the course of the digitization of the energy industry. In order to make the most accurate predictions possible, it is necessary to develop and investigate models that take account of the growing quantity structure and, due to the significantly higher number of observations, improve the forecasting quality as far as possible.Artificial neural networks (ANN) are increasingly being used to solve non-linear problems for a growing amount of data that is affected by human and other unpredictable influences. Consequently, the model approach of an ANN is chosen for predicting load profiles. Aim of the thesis is the simulative investigation and the evaluation of the quality and optimality of a prediction model based on an ANN for electrical load profiles.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the issue of non-performing loans (NPLs), which is critical in the home and host dilemma because of the significant level of cross-border banking that exists at the European level. Indeed, the NPL problem is one of the negative consequences of the push and pull factors of cross-border banking. The move towards consistent practices in the management of NPLs is exemplified by regulatory measures concerning loan loss provisions. In particular, the interlinkages between loan loss provisioning and capital requirements and how they interact with banks and their balance sheet combine a multitude of regulatory decisions directly and indirectly at the accounting and prudential supervisory level. The dynamics of private and public forms of regulation require a systematic discussion of how best to combine and interpret the reforms at European level.

Abstract:
In the last two to three decades, use of credit cards is increasing rapidly due to fast economic growth in developing countries and worldwide globalization issues. Financial institutions like banks are facing a very tough time due to fast-rising cases of credit card loan payment defaulters. The banking institution is constantly searching for the perfect mechanisms or methods to identify possible defaulters among the whole set of credit card users. In this chapter, the most important features of a credit card holder are identified from a considerably large set of features using metaheuristic algorithms. In this work, a standard data set archived in UCI repository of credit card payments of Taiwan is used. Metaheuristic algorithms like particle swarm optimization, ant colony optimization, and simulated annealing are used to identify the significant sets of features from the given data set. Support vector machine classifier is used to identify the class in this two-class (loan defaulter or not) problem.

Abstract:
The author argues that the student loan debt crisis is, in fact, a shortage of public interest professionals. Solving this problem requires replacing the Becker Human Capital Model with a new post-secondary finance model, based on a suggestion of Carolyn Hoxby. The new model says that if the social benefits exceed the upfront costs, get the education. This is in contrast to the previous model that says if the lifetime income exceeds the upfront costs, get the education. The new model suggests counseling to help students be efficient in their college careers and back end debt forgiveness for people recruiting to public interest professions. Pell Grants tied to particular career paths would be used to attract non-traditional students to prepare for public interest careers.

Abstract:
Abstract Electricity suppliers have introduced time-of-use (TOU) metering and pricing in residential buildings in recent years. By increasing the price of electricity during on-peak hours (e.g., 2 pm to 7 pm in summer months), suppliers expect to regulate the energy usage from homeowners when the grid is near capacity. Therefore, homeowners are motivated to shift the load by moving their home electricity use from on-peak hours to off-peak hours for utility cost savings. However, peak load management is another factor that needs to be considered, since a higher peak load might cause other penalties, such as making suppliers change their current tariff policy in the next paying period since the grid needs to fulfill a higher demand. In this paper we explore the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) Strategy for homeowners who are considering saving money by reducing/avoiding the on-peak hour electricity usage while reducing peak load. A multi-goal scheduling problem is solved by constructing a coupled compromise decision support problem in which a water heater is coupled with flexible, non-thermal appliances such as a washing machine. To address these multiple goals, we use Decision Support Problem (DSP) construct. A use case simulation shows that our scheduler can make a reasonable tradeoff between two conflicting goals, helping the homeowner save money while maintaining low peak demand.

Abstract:
With the crisis that started in our country in 2000s, those who owe the bank could not complete their payment obligations, the collection process was damaged and thus the number of problematic loans increased. However, as a result of structural deterioration, bank mergers were experienced, banks' capital was strengthened and many of them were seized by TMSF. This situation has created a distrust of the banking system. In order to change the negative perception, problematic loans which prevent the flow of funds should be solved. At this stage, Asset Management Company has become a need and started to operate in the financial markets of our country. The Asset Management Companies were established in the 1930s to solve the financial problems arising from the global economic crisis. Nowadays, these companies are formed according to the needs and shortcomings and become legal institutions which are effective in eliminating the negative effects of problem loans on banks. In this study; the effects of problem loans, solutions, the process of emergence of companies in the world and in our country, its importance, aims, types, positive and negative aspects of banks and credit customers are examined. As a method of the study, domestic and foreign literature has been utilized and as a result of the study, it has been concluded that this problem has a positive effect on credit customers and banking system upon the transfer of problem loans to asset management companies.

Abstract:
The use of Remaining Useful Life (RUL) predictions as a decision support tool has increased in recent years. The RUL predictions can be obtained from Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) systems that monitor the health status and estimate the failure instant of components and systems. An example of a decision-making problem that can benet from RUL predictions is the load distribution problem, which is a common problem that appears in many industrial applications. It consists in dening how to distribute a task among a set of components. In this paper, a model to solve load distribution optimization problems is proposed. The proposed model considers the RUL prediction of each component in its formulation. Also, the proposed model assumes that the predicted RUL of each component is a function of the load assigned to that component. Thus, it is possible to distribute the load to avoid multiplecomponents to fail in a short interval. An approach based on the MMKP (Multiple-choice Multidimensional Knapsack Problem) is adopted. The proposed model nds a load distribution that minimizes the operational cost subject to a maintenance personnel capacity constraint, i.e. there is a maximum number of components that can be simultaneously on repair. A numerical case study considering a gas compressor station is presented to illustrate the application of theproposed model.

Abstract:
Research objectives were: 1) To study the effect of diet energy density, level of exercise, thermal conditions and reproductive state on cardiovascular function as it relates to oxygen (O2) mobilization. 2) To validate the use of heart rate (HR) to predict energy expenditure (EE) of ruminants, by measuring and calculating the energy balance components at different productive and reproductive states. 3) To validate the use of HR to identify changes in the metabolizable energy (ME) and ME intake (MEI) of grazing ruminants. Background: The development of an effective method for the measurement of EE is essential for understanding the management of both grazing and confined feedlot animals. The use of HR as a method of estimating EE in free-ranging large ruminants has been limited by the availability of suitable field monitoring equipment and by the absence of empirical understanding of the relationship between cardiac function and metabolic rate. Recent developments in microelectronics provide a good opportunity to use small HR devices to monitor free-range animals. The estimation of O2 uptake (VO2) of animals from their HR has to be based upon a consistent relationship between HR and VO2. The question as to whether, or to what extent, feeding level, environmental conditions and reproductive state affect such a relationship is still unanswered. Studies on the basic physiology of O2 mobilization (in USA) and field and feedlot-based investigations (in Israel) covered a , variety of conditions in order to investigate the possibilities of using HR to estimate EE. In USA the physiological studies conducted using animals with implanted flow probes, show that: I) although stroke volume decreases during intense exercise, VO2 per one heart beat per kgBW0.75 (O2 Pulse, O2P) actually increases and measurement of EE by HR and constant O2P may underestimate VO2unless the slope of the regression relating to heart rate and VO2 is also determined, 2) alterations in VO2 associated with the level of feeding and the effects of feeding itself have no effect on O2P, 3) both pregnancy and lactation may increase blood volume, especially lactation; but they have no effect on O2P, 4) ambient temperature in the range of 15 to 25°C in the resting animal has no effect on O2P, and 5) severe heat stress, induced by exercise, elevates body temperature to a sufficient extent that 14% of cardiac output may be required to dissipate the heat generated by exercise rather than for O2 transport. However, this is an unusual situation and its affect on EE estimation in a freely grazing animal, especially when heart rate is monitored over several days, is minor. In Israel three experiments were carried out in the hot summer to define changes in O2P attributable to changes in the time of day or In the heat load. The animals used were lambs and young calves in the growing phase and highly yielding dairy cows. In the growing animals the time of day, or the heat load, affected HR and VO2, but had no effect on O2P. On the other hand, the O2P measured in lactating cows was affected by the heat load; this is similar to the finding in the USA study of sheep. Energy balance trials were conducted to compare MEI recovery by the retained energy (RE) and by EE as measured by HR and O2P. The trial hypothesis was that if HR reliably estimated EE, the MEI proportion to (EE+RE) would not be significantly different from 1.0. Beef cows along a year of their reproductive cycle and growing lambs were used. The MEI recoveries of both trials were not significantly different from 1.0, 1.062+0.026 and 0.957+0.024 respectively. The cows' reproductive state did not affect the O2P, which is similar to the finding in the USA study. Pasture ME content and animal variables such as HR, VO2, O2P and EE of cows on grazing and in confinement were measured throughout three years under twenty-nine combinations of herbage quality and cows' reproductive state. In twelve grazing states, individual faecal output (FO) was measured and MEI was calculated. Regression analyses of the EE and RE dependent on MEI were highly significant (P<0.001). The predicted values of EE at zero intake (78 kcal/kgBW0.75), were similar to those estimated by NRC (1984). The EE at maintenance condition of the grazing cows (EE=MEI, 125 kcal/kgBW0.75) which are in the range of 96.1 to 125.5 as presented by NRC (1996 pp 6-7) for beef cows. Average daily HR and EE were significantly increased by lactation, P<0.001 and P<0.02 respectively. Grazing ME significantly increased HR and EE, P<0.001 and P<0.00l respectively. In contradiction to the finding in confined ewes and cows, the O2P of the grazing cows was significantly affected by the combined treatments (P<0.00l ); this effect was significantly related to the diet ME (P<0.00l ) and consequently to the MEI (P<0.03). Grazing significantly increased O2P compared to confinement. So, when EE of grazing animals during a certain season of the year is estimated using the HR method, the O2P must be re measured whenever grazing ME changes. A high correlation (R2>0.96) of group average EE and of HR dependency on MEI was also found in confined cows, which were fed six different diets and in growing lambs on three diets. In conclusion, the studies conducted in USA and in Israel investigated in depth the physiological mechanisms of cardiovascular and O2 mobilization, and went on to investigate a wide variety of ruminant species, ages, reproductive states, diets ME, time of intake and time of day, and compared these variables under grazing and confinement conditions. From these combined studies we can conclude that EE can be determined from HR measurements during several days, multiplied by O2P measured over a short period of time (10-15 min). The study showed that RE could be determined during the growing phase without slaughtering. In the near future the development microelectronic devices will enable wide use of the HR method to determine EE and energy balance. It will open new scopes of physiological and agricultural research with minimizes strain on animals. The method also has a high potential as a tool for herd management.
