Résum Dans cet article, l'auteure démontre à l'aide d'exemples cliniques que la thérapie familiale ne doit pas uniquement considérer le symptôme comme l'expression d'un problème familial. Elle doit se centrer sur celui-ci, s'il compromet sérieusement le développement de l'enfant ou est le seul moyen d'obtenir la coopération de la famille dans le traitement, par exemple, des cas de phobie de l'école, de cysténose et d'anorexie nerveuse. Dans les cas où le symptôme ne compromet pas le développement immédiat de l'enfant, celui-ci peut être considéré comme un signal de détresse et l'intervention du thérapeute portera alors sur les modèles transactionnels et les règles familiales sous-jacentes.

Cet article présente un programme d'aide aux parents qui éprouvent de la difficulté dans l'éducation de leur adolescent. S'inscrivant dans une perspective interactionnelle et orientée vers les solutions, une attention y est apportée à l'identification de solutions concrètes à mettre en œuvre dans la famille. L'exploration du problème dans le cadre des interactions qui y ont cours et l'analyse minutieuse de moments d'exception où ce problème ne se manifeste pas, de même que l'identification de moments privilégiés partagés en famille, sont à la base de la démarche. Afin d'améliorer les relations familiales, ce programme préconise d'éviter la répétition des solutions inopérantes tout en encourageant ce qui fonctionne déjà bien. Par cette attention accordée à ce qui est positif, l'intervenant met en évidence, voire amplifie les forces et ressources présentes dans le répertoire familial.

Depuis plusieurs décennies, nombre d'études et de rapports aussi bien privés que publics posent le problème du placement des enfants au Québec et formulent l'hypothèse du recours excessif à cette mesure. On aurait trop souvent retiré des enfants de leur milieu familial pour les placer en institution ou en famille d'accueil, alors que, dans bien des cas, des mesures de soutien à domicile auraient pu préserver la cohésion familiale. Le présent texte retrace l'évolution du placement au Québec depuis les années 1930, tant du point de vue qualitatif que quantitatif, et propose quelques éléments juridiques et socioculturels explication de la situation particulière du Québec dans ce domaine.

Si la famille est en général synonyme d’intimité et de relations de confiance, elle peut également être un lieu d’abus, de contrôle ou de violences. Les diverses formes de violences qui se déroulent dans la sphère privée ont été dénoncées dès les années 1970 par les mouvements féministes. Elles ont alors fait l’objet d’une variété de politiques et d’actions publiques ayant pour vocation de défendre et d’accompagner les victimes, de punir et soigner les agresseurs ou de rétablir des liens familiaux distendus. En s’attachant à la façon dont ces violences ont été définies dans des contextes différents, en Europe, en Amérique du Nord et en Amérique latine, cet article a pour ambition de donner à voir les perspectives variées que recouvrent des catégories d’action publique aussi diverses que violences conjugales, violences domestiques, violences intrafamiliales ou encore féminicides ou fémicides, et les conséquences que ces différentes visions du problème ont sur sa prise en charge. Largement influencé par les études genre et la sociologie des problèmes publics, cet article, notamment à travers la présentation des contributions qui composent ce numéro de la revueEnfances Familles Générations, entend questionner les notions de violences de genre dans le cadre familial, dont les frontières sont fluctuantes et investies de façon variée, ainsi que les formes d’institutionnalisation du problème et les solutions qui sont envisagées.

Résumé À l'aide de son expérience clinique, l'auteur essaie, dans cet article, d'illustrer comment le thérapeute familial construit un système thérapeutique. Pour ce, il s'attarde à trois aspects particuliers : 1) il décrit d'abord en présence de quoi se trouve le thérapeute au départ. Il a affaire à un système (la famille) ouvert ou fermé. Pour évaluer son degré d'ouverture, il observe les règles de survivance, les schemes de comportement et le fonctionnement homéostatique. 2) il explique comment débuter la première entrevue à la lumière de la démarche tracée par Shirley Luthman. Il insiste aussi sur l'importance d'explorer la problématique de la famille selon une logique circulaire. 3) il montre comment il est important de redéfinir le problème, la relation thérapeutique et le contexte qui peut être judiciaire, de protection, de folie ou d'attente. Il conclue en insistant sur le fait que le thérapeute familial doit se préoccuper essentiellement du processus : comment se passent les choses entre les personnes?

Les intervenants sociaux considèrent en général la grossesse à l’adolescence comme un problème important, un point de vue appuyé par de nombreuses recherches qui soulignent les conséquences négatives de la maternité à cet âge de la vie. Le présent article cherche à approfondir cette question en analysant les parcours d’insertion professionnelle de jeunes femmes n’ayant pas terminé leurs études et ayant donné naissance durant l’adolescence ou au début de la vingtaine. Fondés sur une enquête rétrospective conduite par entretiens semi-dirigés, les résultats montrent que ces jeunes mères ne sont pas nécessairement condamnées à l’avance, puisque le soutien familial et les aides à l’insertion permettent à nombre d’entre elles de se stabiliser en emploi. Les aides à l’insertion demeurent cependant défaillantes à plusieurs égards, ce que ne peut résoudre systématiquement le soutien familial.

Résumé Dans cette recherche exploratoire sur les représentations sociales des gestionnaires d’entreprises, deux logiques naturelles ont été repérées à l’origine des pratiques liées à l’embauche de personnes aux prises avec des problèmes de surconsommation de substances psychoactives. D’un côté, le discours dominant est structuré autour de l’importance de la productivité pour l’entreprise et autour de la toxicomanie, considérée comme un problème de l’individu. De l’autre côté, un discours périphérique apparaît comme fondé sur l’idée que l’entreprise a une certaine fonction sociale à assumer et que la source de la toxicomanie est aussi externe à l’individu, c’est-à-dire qu’elle provient de son milieu familial, social ou de travail. Les représentations sociales de l’entreprise et de la toxicomanie, qui organisent ce discours des gestionnaires, indiquent une dynamique de changement.

Jack Goody a mis en lumière l'importance, dans les élites de propriétaires fonciers, du phénomène familial consistant dans le manque d'enfants et d'héritiers directs. D'un point de vue démographique, c'est généralement environ un cinquième des couples qui restent sans enfants, et un autre cinquième qui n'ont que des filles : ce sont donc de l'ordre de 40 % des familles qui n'ont pas de fils. Il en résulte une discontinuité qui pouvait poser divers problèmes sociaux. Déjà les sociétés antiques avaient créé toute une gamme d'institutions et de pratiques permettant de suppléer les fils manquants. La première forme du problème est qu'il n'y ait pas d'enfant du tout. Si le mari était mort sans en laisser, en Israël le lévirat obligeait le frère du défunt à prendre la veuve pour épouse dans le but de relever le nom du premier.

Cette thèse, en portant une attention particulière sur les entreprises familiales turques et par l'utilisation d'une approche fondée sur la théorie de l'agence, a pour objectif de mettre en lumière les implications du capital familial sur la performance, la distribution de dividendes et les avoirs étrangers. Elle étudie premièrement en s'appuyant sur une méta-analyse, la relation entre l'impact net du capital familial sur la performance de l'entreprise et l'effet de modérateurs sur cette relation. Ensuite, elle examine si, en Turquie, le capital familial comble ou profite des lacunes institutionnelles et étudie comment les entreprises familiales diminuent les préoccupations relatives à l'expropriation des actionnaires minoritaires. Enfin, elle explore comment dans le cas turc, les investisseurs étrangers perçoivent le capital familial et les pratiques de gouvernance appliquées par les entreprises familiales pour éliminer les préoccupations de ces investisseurs concernant l'expropriation de leurs droits. Les principaux résultats de cette thèse démontrent que l'impact du capital familial sur la performance des entreprises est positif mais faible. Le niveau de développement des institutions formelles du pays dans lequel les entreprises familiales opèrent, modère la relation entre le capital familial et la performance des entreprises. En Turquie, un niveau modéré de détention du capital par la famille est bénéfique car la performance comptable atteint un pic à ce niveau de détention et les investisseurs valorisent un tel niveau de détention du capital par la famille. En outre, lorsque les familles détiennent un niveau substantiel de droits de vote et participent activement au management de l'entreprise, le versement de dividendes se réduit et la gouvernance familiale profite des lacunes institutionnelles pour exproprier les autres actionnaires de leurs droits. Enfin, en Turquie, le recours effectif par les entreprises familiales à des pratiques de gouvernance diminue les inquiétudes des investisseurs étrangers concernant l'opportunisme de la famille
Using insights mainly from agency theory, this dissertation intends to shed light on performance, dividend payout and foreign holdings' implications of family involvement in firm with an emphasis on Turkish family firms. The dissertation first investigates the net effect of family involvement on firm performance and the effect of moderators on that relationship by conducting a meta-analysis. It then shifts the focus on Turkey to examine whether family governance fills or abuses institutional gaps and look into how family firms alleviate concerns of expropriation of minority shareholders. Finally, it investigates how foreign investors perceive family involvement in firm and firm-level governance practices of family firms to mitigate investors' expropriation concerns in Turkey. The main findings of this dissertation show that the impact of family participation on firm performance is positive but modest. The development level of formal institutions in countries in which family firms operate moderates the relationship between family involvement and firm performance. In Turkey, moderate levels of family involvement in ownership are beneficial since accounting profitability reaches a peak at these levels and foreign investors value these levels of family participation in firm. On the other hand, when families have substantial voting rights and actively participate in management, dividend payouts reduce and family governance abuses institutional voids by expropriating other shareholders. Additionally, the effective use of firm-level governance practices by family firms mitigates foreign investors' concerns about family opportunism in Turkey

Abstract:
This study examined parent engagement, child engagement, and quality of problem solving in a sample of families engaged in a trial of parent management training intervention. Data were collected for treatment and control groups at preintervention and 2, 4, and 6 months after the initial assessment. Variables in this study were measured utilizing a global coding scheme used to categorize parent-child behavioral observations. The coding scheme was developed by Forgatch, Knutson, and Mayne. Preliminary analyses led to scale changes due to lack of variance in observations. Results show that treatment group showed a gain in problem solving skills at T2; however those gains were not retained at T3. There was a gain between T3 and T4. The control group showed an increase at T4 from baseline in problem solving skills. Both parent and child engagement decreased for both groups, with the lowest time point occurring at T3.

La thèse aborde les problèmes de gouvernance interne d'un groupe familial tunisien, de taille moyenne et qui connaît plusieurs transformations. Un premier chapitre est consacré à la définition du groupe familial, notamment dans la mise en œuvre d'un mode de gouvernance spécifique. Un deuxième chapitre, relatant l'histoire du groupe depuis ses origines jusqu'aux évènements les plus récents, permet de comprendre comment il est passé historiquement par plusieurs états. Un troisième chapitre reprend les interviews réalisées auprès des dirigeants des sociétés membres. Un quatrième chapitre propose une analyse globale et interprétative sur le mode de fonctionnement du groupe. Cette recherche contribue à mieux comprendre le mode d'évolution et de fonctionnement de ce groupe, et à approfondir la notion de structure de groupe, en dépassant les typologies classiques. La méthodologie étant exploratoire et descriptive, l'approche historique permet d'interpréter les évolutions, en mettant en évidence à la fois l'interaction des logiques d'actions et des degrés de contrôle, et l'impact conjugué des choix de diversification et des facteurs contingents.

Abstract:
Over the last few decades, phylogenetics has emerged as a very promising field, facilitating a comparative framework to explain the genetic relationships among all the living organisms on earth. These genetic relationships are typically represented by a bifurcating phylogenetic tree — the tree of life. Reconstructing a phylogenetic tree is one of the central tasks in evolutionary biology. The different evolutionary processes, such as gene duplications, gene losses, speciation, and lateral gene transfer events, make the phylogeny reconstruction task more difficult. However, with the rapid developments in sequencing technologies and availability of genome-scale sequencing data, give us the opportunity to understand these evolutionary processes in a more informed manner, and ultimately, enable us to reconstruct genes and species phylogenies more accurately. This thesis is an attempt to provide computational methods for phylogenetic inference and give tools to conduct genome-scale comparative evolutionary studies, such as detecting homologous sequences and inferring gene families. In the first project, we present FastPhylo as a software package containing fast tools for reconstructing distance-based phylogenies. It implements the previously published efficient algorithms for estimating a distance matrix from the input sequences and reconstructing an un-rooted Neighbour Joining tree from a given distance matrix. Results on simulated datasets reveal that FastPhylo can handles hundred of thousands of sequences in a minimum time and memory efficient manner. The easy to use, well-defined interfaces, and the modular structure of FastPhylo allows it to be used in very large Bioinformatic pipelines. In the second project, we present a synteny-aware gene homology method, called GenFamClust (GFC) that uses gene content and gene order conservation to detect homology. Results on simulated and biological datasets suggest that local synteny information combined with the sequence similarity improves the detection of homologs. In the third project, we introduce a novel phylogeny-based clustering method, PhyloGenClust, which partitions a very large gene family into smaller subfamilies. ROC (receiver operating characteristics) analysis on synthetic datasets show that PhyloGenClust identify subfamilies more accurately. PhyloGenClust can be used as a middle tier clustering method between raw clustering methods, such as sequence similarity methods, and more sophisticated Bayesian-based phylogeny methods. Finally, we introduce a novel probabilistic Bayesian method based on the DLTRS model, to sample reconciliations of a gene tree inside a species tree. The method uses MCMC framework to integrate LGTs, gene duplications, gene losses and sequence evolution under a relaxed molecular clock for substitution rates. The proposed sampling method estimates the posterior distribution of gene trees and provides the temporal information of LGT events over the lineages of a species tree. Analysis on simulated datasets reveal that our method performs well in identifying the true temporal estimates of LGT events. We applied our method to the genome-wide gene families for mollicutes and cyanobacteria, which gave an interesting insight into the potential LGTs highways.

Abstract Analogical design and invention is a central task in human cognition. Often during the process the designer/inventor gets stuck; backs off from the problem; and only later, after having put the problem aside, discovers that some familiar plan can be used in a novel way to solve the problem. We describe a system which uses a causal case memory to check the side effects, preconditions, etc. of incoming events in order to model this phenomenon.

The need to cost effectively introduce new generations of product families within ever decreasing time frames have led manufacturers to seek product development strategies with a multigenerational outlook. Co-evolution of product families and assembly systems is a methodology that leads to the simultaneous design of several generations of product families and reconfigurable assembly systems that optimize life cycle costs. Two strategies that are necessary for the implementation of the co-evolution of product families and assembly systems methodology are: (1) The concurrent design of product families and assembly systems and (2) Assembly system reconfiguration planning (ASRP). ASRP is used for the determination of the assembly system reconfiguration plans that minimize the cost of producing several generations of product families. More specifically, the objective of ASRP is to minimize the net present cost of producing successive generations of products. This paper introduces a method for finding optimum solutions to the ASRP problem. The solution methodology involves the generation of a staged network of assembly system plans for all the generations that the product family is expected to be produced. Each stage in the network represents a generation that the product family is produced, while each state within a stage represents a potential assembly system configuration. A novel algorithm for generating the states (i.e. assembly system configurations) within each generation is also introduced. A dynamic program is used to find the cost minimizing path through the network. An example is used to demonstrate the implementation of the ASRP methodology.

Advocates have long raised concerns about the potential for partner violence after a spouse’s or partner’s return from prison, but few programs or policies exist to prevent it. In an era in which experiences of incarceration and reentry—and by extension, experiences of a partner’s or coparent’s incarceration and reentry—are commonplace in low-income urban communities, the safety of families reuniting after a prison stay merits serious attention. The current study examines qualitative data from 167 reentering men and their partners to identify contextual influences on post-prison partner violence. Insights from the data offer a valuable starting point for future research and for considering how prevention could effectively target economic, physical, social, and cognitive conditions at multiple social-ecological levels.

The enormous individual, familial, and societal burden of child sexual abuse has underscored the need to address the problem from a public health framework. Much work remains, however, at the first step of this framework — defining and understanding the scope of the problem, or establishing incidence and prevalence estimates. In this occasional paper, we provide an overview of the ways researchers have defined and estimated the scope of child sexual abuse, focusing on agency tabulations and large-scale surveys conducted over the last several decades. More precise estimates of the number of children affected by child sexual abuse would improve the ability of the public health, child welfare, pediatrics, and other communities to prevent and respond to the problem. We recommend using a comprehensive surveillance system to assess and track the scope of child sexual abuse. This system should be grounded by common definitional elements and draw from multiple indicators and sources to estimate the prevalence of a range of sexually abusive experiences.

The lack of motivation and sense of community within schools have proven to be the two most relevant factors behind the decision to drop out. Despite the notable progress made in school access in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, dropping out of school has still been a problem. This paper explores Scholas Occurrentes pedagogical approach to address these dropouts. Scholas focuses on the voice of students. It seeks to act positively on their motivation by listening to them, creating spaces for discussion, and strengthening soft skills and civic engagement. Scholas aims to enhance the sense of community within schools by gathering students from different social and economic backgrounds and involving teachers, families, and societal actors. This will break down the walls between schools and the whole community. This paper presents Scholas work with three examples from Paraguay, Haiti, and Argentina. It analyzes the positive impacts that Scholas' intervention had on the participants. Then, it focuses on future challenges regarding the scalability and involvement of the institutions in the formulation of new public policies. The approach highlights the participatory nature of education and the importance of all actors engagement.

In the decade after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, African Americans made historic gains in accessing employment opportunities in racially integrated workplaces in U.S. business firms and government agencies. In the previous working papers in this series, we have shown that in the 1960s and 1970s, Blacks without college degrees were gaining access to the American middle class by moving into well-paid unionized jobs in capital-intensive mass production industries. At that time, major U.S. companies paid these blue-collar workers middle-class wages, offered stable employment, and provided employees with health and retirement benefits. Of particular importance to Blacks was the opening up to them of unionized semiskilled operative and skilled craft jobs, for which in a number of industries, and particularly those in the automobile and electronic manufacturing sectors, there was strong demand. In addition, by the end of the 1970s, buoyed by affirmative action and the growth of public-service employment, Blacks were experiencing upward mobility through employment in government agencies at local, state, and federal levels as well as in civil-society organizations, largely funded by government, to operate social and community development programs aimed at urban areas where Blacks lived. By the end of the 1970s, there was an emergent blue-collar Black middle class in the United States. Most of these workers had no more than high-school educations but had sufficient earnings and benefits to provide their families with economic security, including realistic expectations that their children would have the opportunity to move up the economic ladder to join the ranks of the college-educated white-collar middle class. That is what had happened for whites in the post-World War II decades, and given the momentum provided by the dominant position of the United States in global manufacturing and the nation’s equal employment opportunity legislation, there was every reason to believe that Blacks would experience intergenerational upward mobility along a similar education-and-employment career path. That did not happen. Overall, the 1980s and 1990s were decades of economic growth in the United States. For the emerging blue-collar Black middle class, however, the experience was of job loss, economic insecurity, and downward mobility. As the twentieth century ended and the twenty-first century began, moreover, it became apparent that this downward spiral was not confined to Blacks. Whites with only high-school educations also saw their blue-collar employment opportunities disappear, accompanied by lower wages, fewer benefits, and less security for those who continued to find employment in these jobs. The distress experienced by white Americans with the decline of the blue-collar middle class follows the downward trajectory that has adversely affected the socioeconomic positions of the much more vulnerable blue-collar Black middle class from the early 1980s. In this paper, we document when, how, and why the unmaking of the blue-collar Black middle class occurred and intergenerational upward mobility of Blacks to the college-educated middle class was stifled. We focus on blue-collar layoffs and manufacturing-plant closings in an important sector for Black employment, the automobile industry from the early 1980s. We then document the adverse impact on Blacks that has occurred in government-sector employment in a financialized economy in which the dominant ideology is that concentration of income among the richest households promotes productive investment, with government spending only impeding that objective. Reduction of taxes primarily on the wealthy and the corporate sector, the ascendancy of political and economic beliefs that celebrate the efficiency and dynamism of “free market” business enterprise, and the denigration of the idea that government can solve social problems all combined to shrink government budgets, diminish regulatory enforcement, and scuttle initiatives that previously provided greater opportunity for African Americans in the government and civil-society sectors.
