A general and systematic approach for investigating the interfacial behaviour of tyred systems has consequently been proposed. Abstract The passive protection of pipelines through the application of coatings, represents a fundamental situation in industry, above all in the oil and gas sector, particularly where the working environment is marine and therefore highly corrosive. Operational performance mainly depends on the correct preparation of the technical design specifications, both during construction projects and during maintenance, as well as on the use of highly qualified staff, in particular the Painting and Coating Inspectors. In this paper the solutions to the problems are discussed, beginning with the severa

Abstract Gaskets have been used for many years to disrupt the electrochemical pathway between anodes and cathodes in bolted joints. However, the gasket must maintain its primary objective which is providing a leak tight seal, while being electrically insulating. Many of the most commonly used gaskets for critical service are semi metallic, that is, spiral wound gaskets, Kammprofile gaskets etc. These products are excellent at providing a leak tight seal, when well designed, but being largely metallic they allow charges to conduct between flanges in the bolted joint. Non-metallic gaskets such a

The difficult environmental situation in the world is largely a consequence of the huge volume of production and consumption waste and its constant growth. In this regard, the problem of waste placement, neutralization and utilization comes to the fore. One of the most controversial methods that contribute to a significant reduction in the amount of garbage and the production of energy is waste incineration plants. The main argument of opponents of this method of disposal is the assertion about the pollution of the atmosphere by exhaust gases, which are waste from waste incineration plants. Me

Abstract Artificial Neural Networks are being used increasingly in many fields of industry and commerce. Their ability to “learn by example” and to generalise this knowledge so as to give correct predictions to previously unseen data make them extremely attractive. There is great potential for applying this technology to corrosion problems as, in principle, artificial neural networks can ‘learn’ the behaviour of materials in a range of corrosive environments and thereby predict their behaviour. In practice, data in the literature is derived from differing sources, it is often of poor quality a

The logistics industry is one of utmost relevance and principally serves as a motor of private sec-tor development and growth of the economic sectors of a country or region. A logistics industry that is efficient and accessible to everyone is a key element for companies in a country or region in general, and its small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular, to successfully compete in this new global context. Despite improvements in Latin America and the Caribbean in recent years, structural logistics problems persist, creating obstacles to exports for firms in the region, particula

Environmental taxes have been discussed as one of the main mechanisms to deal with environmental problems. Nonetheless, instruments of this type have rarely been implemented, and the adoption of new or higher environmental taxes has faced resistance in some countries. The purpose of this work is to identify one possible political answer to why adoption of environmental taxes varies. One explanation is that legislatures' ideological position affects the degree of usage of taxes generally and environ- mental taxes in particular. For example, right-wing parties tend to be less associated with env

During recent pipeline construction seasons, there have been reported difficulties in cold field bending different joints of line pipe produced by the same manufacturer during a particular production run. These difficulties were typically manifested as an inability to achieve bends of one to one-and-a-half degrees per diameter in the pipe without forming ripples. Some of these problems could be traced to poor bending practices, i.e., inappropriate bending machine set-up and operator inexperience. However, it was observed that even with proper machine set-up and experienced operators, some "bad

Over the last two decades undergraduate students have been encouraged to problem solve in ‘the real world’ in order to construct their own subject knowledge. This generally means that students are required to carry out research in their disciplines, a process which inevitably leads to the production of quantities of data. Once their findings are reported back to faculty and have been graded, they are largely ignored, as they are ‘only’ the product of undergraduate research. However, since 2000 there has been a move to bring this type of work into the open through undergraduate research confere
