Abstract:

ABSTRACT Cormac McCarthy has stated that tragedy is central to human experience and that “the core of literature is the idea of tragedy.” Furthermore, he maintains that the tragic genre probes how humans “deal with” the bad things that happen to them. McCarthy’s duology, The Passenger and Stella Maris, locates its main narrative concerning Alicia and Bobby Western’s taboo love within the framework of romantic tragedy. Incest has been a much-revisited topic within Western tragedy. Consider the dramas of Sophocles, Euripides, Seneca, John Webster, John Ford, Henrik Ibsen, and Eugene O’Neill. In McCarthy’s treatment, incest is an impediment to reciprocal love. This tragic fatedness crosses any expectations Alicia and Bobby court of mutual happiness and fulfillment. The duology explores the siblings’ ways of dealing with their tragic condition, the romantic Alicia’s all-or-nothing, self-destructive passion and the ascetic Bobby’s attitude of self-denial and endurance. Two tragic antecedents further inform McCarthy’s examination of forbidden love: William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1597) and the Nahua myth of the warrior Popocatépetl and the princess Iztaccíhuatl. The article concludes by proposing that, despite the duology’s preoccupation with the tragic human condition, the narrative tentatively gestures to a state of being that might, perhaps, lie beyond tragedy.

Abstract:

AbstractΛιβανωτός is a rare word in the Biblia graeca and means ‘frankincense’. It appears once in the canonical Septuagint in 1 Chron 9.29 as part of a list of ingredients which were under the care of the Levites: flour, wine, olive oil, incense and spices. In the Apocrypha, it appears in 3 Macc 5.2 as a drug, together with unmixed wine, for maddening or running elephants wild. Then it is used only in Rev 8.3, 5 in constructions which made lexicographers unanimously define λιβανωτός as a container (censer or brazier). However, when one examines the usage of this noun in Greek writing at large, he or she observes, not without surprise, that λιβανωτός exhibits impressively stable semantics. Virtually everywhere in the history of Greek, the term is a spice (frankincense). Why then should Rev 8.3, 5 be an exception? The study probes into the claim that λιβανωτός means ‘censer’ in the Johannine Apocalypse, shows how well the regular meaning of incense fits in the scene John witnesses, and draws important implications for the understanding of the text and the lexicographical task.

Abstract:

Indoor air quality has become a topic of great concern. Burning incense has recently been identified as one of the primary sources of volatile organic compounds, specifically benzene, in an indoor setting. The current paper aims to evaluate volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, particularly benzene, within indoor environments through the utilization of an experimental clean room. Experimental findings showed that 10 types of incense sticks emitted benzene in concentrations between 11.1 and 66.5 μg m−3, which were 2.5 lower than the limit suggested for non-occupation indoor exposure (160 μg m−3), identified by the American Association of Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). Furthermore, a correlation between the dimensions (diameter and length) of the combustible parts in an incense stick was investigated and indicated a slight influence on the release of benzene. Taking into consideration the substantial influence benzene has on human health, coupled with a lack of precise legislation regarding indoor air quality in residential settings, this research serves as an initial investigation into the noteworthy effects of burning incense in private and public indoor settings.

Abstract:

This study investigated the effect of substituting cement with incense ash on material properties and hydration of cement-based composite materials. Test specimens with incense ash replacing up to 30% (volume) of cement were produced and cured at 25 °C and 75 °C for up to 120 days. The researchers of this study observed the effect on setting time, heat conduction, compressive strength, and water absorption, and conducted a microanalysis to observe the structural change of hydration products. The results indicated that by substituting cement with incense ash, the hydration reaction was hastened, and the setting time shortened. When 5% of cement was replaced, incense ash had the effect of filling the voids between particles. At a higher curing temperature, the frequency of particle collisions increased, expediting the hydration reaction and improving the strength of the specimens. At a longer curing time, voids in the specimens were gradually filled by colloids, and pozzolanic reaction caused the amount of Ca(OH)2 to diminish and C–S–H gel to increase, which in turn improved the structural cohesion, reduced the water absorption, and increased the strength and thermal conductivity of the specimens.

Abstract:

With the global #Metoo movement yet to arrive in Nigeria, Jude Dibia’s Unbridled reflects an emblematic moment for the underrepresented to occupy their stories and make their voices heard. The study analyzes patriarchy’s complicated relationship with the Nigerian girl child, significantly reviewing the inherent prejudices in patriarchy’s power hierarchies and how radical narratives explore taboo topics like incest and sexual violence. Contextualizing the concepts of hypersexualization and implicit bias to put in perspective how women, expected to be the gatekeepers of sex, are forced to navigate competing allegiances while remaining submissive and voiceless, the article probes the struggles of sexual victims and how hierarchies in a patriarchal society exacerbate their affliction through a culture of silence. Arguing that Dibia’s Unbridled confronts the narrative of silence in Nigerian fiction, the article explores ways the author empowers gender by challenging social values and traditional gender roles, underscoring gender dynamics and the problematic nature of prevalent bias against the feminine gender in Nigeria.

A diferencia del enfoque en la «negrura» y el «pesimismo» favorecido por algunos críticos en sus análisis del primer poemario de César Vallejo, en este ensayo utilizo la ecocrítica para investigar el papel desempeñado por «lo verde» en Los heraldos negros. Inicio mi análisis con los poemas juveniles, tales como «Fosforencia» y «Transpiración vegetal», y propongo que son importantísimos para entender la fascinación primordial que tenía Vallejo por la naturaleza, como también son cruciales aquellos poemas de Los heraldos negros en los cuales Vallejo plantea «lo verde». Luego paso a una investigación de cómo Vallejo describe su relación incestuosa con su sobrina por medio de la metáfora de la narrativa herética de la relación sexual entre Cristo y María Magdalena en poemas como «Nervazón de angustia», «Comunión» y «Setiembre», y sugiero que revelan un lado «verde» del yo poético de Vallejo. Finalmente, recurro a las teorías del antropólogo francés Claude Lévi-Strauss sobre lo «cocido» y lo «crudo», y la prohibición del incesto como la piedra angular de la cultura humana para proponer que el yo poético de Vallejo buscaba la dulzura en un mundo en que pudiera prescindir de la necesidad de comunicarse con los demás al mismo tiempo que rehusaba cambiar de mujeres, para así poder, citando las palabras de Lévi-Strauss, «vivre entre soi».

Abstract:

La Batalla de l’Ebre (1938) va ser la més decisiva de la Guerra Civil espanyola. La desfeta de l’Exèrcit Popular va provocar l’ocupació de Catalunya i la victòria definitiva de les forces del general Franco sobre la República espanyola. Els vencedors van ubicar sobre el camp de batalla monuments per escenificar la seva victòria, però les accions de patrimonialització van tenir un desenvolupament limitat, mentre que la II Guerra Mundial i el seu desenllaç van obrir perspectives incertes per al règim del general Franco. La mort del dictador l’any 1975 va provocar canvis polítics a Espanya, i els espais històrics de la Batalla de l’Ebre van conèixer noves intervencions a l’entorn del seu patrimoni, subsidiàries dels imaginaris socials i polítics del procés de democratització. Nous monuments i instal·lacions museals convidaven a una interpretació de la batalla compatible amb l’imaginari de reconciliació desenvolupat pel nou règim constitucional. Dècades després dels combats, la batalla de l’Ebre continuava, però ara la pugna s’establia entre models i accions per fixar la memòria al territori, a partir d’intervencions patrimonials, museus, monuments i escultures. En el context d’emergència democràtica de principis del segle XXI, les iniciatives de la societat civil, sumades a les dinàmiques de recerca i socialització del coneixement impulsades en clau d’història pública i arqueologia pública, obrien noves perspectives en la recuperació d’una memòria republicana de la batalla. En aquest context destaquen les iniciatives del grup de recerca «Didàctica del Patrimoni» (DIDPATRI) de la Universitat de Barcelona. L’estudi aproxima les diferents fases d’apropiació, en clau de memòria històrica, del camp de batalla de l’Ebre, i les iniciatives i casuístiques principals de patrimonialització generades, al seu entorn, en els diferents moments històrics.

Abstract:

Studien har undersökt vad behandlare upplever är specifikt i behandlingsprocessen, i alliansskapandet samt hur behandlarna påverkats affektivt av mötet med barn och ungdomar i åldrarna 4 till 18 år som blivit utsatta för incest. Fem legitimerade psykologer med erfarenheter från barn och ungdomspsykiatrisk verksamhet intervjuades. Tematisk analys användes vid bearbetning av data. Behandlarna poängterade i resultatet brister i struktur och skyddsaspekt i behandlingsprocessen samt behov av gränser i alliansskapandet. De affekter som oftast framträdde hos behandlarna var negativa affekter som ledsnad och förakt. Resultatet visade även på att behandlarna efterfrågade riktlinjer och vårdprogram specifikt inriktade mot barn och ungdomar som utsatts för incest. Forskning är nödvändig med fokus på evidensbaserade behandlingsmetoder som kan skapa riktlinjer för behandlare inom området. Vidare behövs det forskning med fokus på hur behandlarna påverkas av affekter som uppkommer i terapi med barn och ungdomar som blivit utsatta.
This study has investigated what therapists experience is specific in the treatment process, in the alliance creation and how therapists were affected by affects in meeting with children and adolescents aged 4 to 18 years who were exposed for incest. Five licensed psychologists with experience from child and adolescent psychiatry were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used in data processing. The result showed that therapists underlined a lack of structure and protection in treatment process as well as need for limits in the alliance creation with children exposed for incest. Effects that often emerged from the therapists were negative effects that led to sadness and contempt. The results also showed that the therapists requested guidelines and care programs specifically aimed for children and adolescent who are exposed for incest. Research is needed to produce evidence-based treatment methods that can create guidelines for therapists in the field.More research is needed focusing on how therapists are affected by affects that occur in treatment with child and adolescent who are exposed for incest.

Due to incest incidents are usually concealed by families, which is not easy to discover, incest victims continually being abused and isolated; meanwhile, the repeated abuse incidents and numerous dark figures which exist cannot be ignored. While incest incidents brought serious physical and psychological trauma to victims, the purpose of this research is to find out the victim experience of incest victims, such as the criminal situations, the reaction interpretations, the incident’s revelations, the motivation of help-seeking, and the coping process. This research is completed by qualitative research method, through interviewing the social workers whom directly provide services to incest victims. By social workers’ treatment experience via abusers, victims, and other family members, the researcher could discover the full image of the family and the family dynamics. At the same time, the researcher use WinMax qualitative analysis system to increase the reliability of this research. There were some findings as listed below: incest incidents have development timing order, and the previous stage will impact the next stage. The researcher classified the timing order to four stages, omen stage, victim stage, impact stage, and recover stage; and the order could overlap each other. Omen stage includes the personality, family structure, criminal situations, and other factors of abuser and victim. Omen does not lead to crime, but if professional authority did not prevent it in-time, the person whom is in the disadvantage situation has highly potential become a victim. Victim stage means the incest incident happened when the criminal situation elements are sufficient. Impact stage means the influence and coping reaction of victims. Recover stage includes the beneficial elements and disadvantage elements which impact the recovery of victims. The result of this research is similar to Routine Activities Theory. This research result supported the situational crime prevention strategy. If we view the victim experience as a coherent process, once the process was interrupted, the incest incident could be prevented. If we decrease the sufficiency of criminal situation elements, the frequency of incest incidents could be decrease at the same time. Therefore, this research provided suggestions of prevention strategy, also mention the importance of prevention for related authorities.

Abstract:

In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic was the centre of the world trade in exotic drugs and spices. They were sought after both as medicines, and as luxury objects for the bourgeois class, giving rise to a medical and moral anxiety in the Republic. This ambivalent view on exotic drugs is the theme of the poetry of Joannes Six van Chandelier (1620-1695). Six, who himself ran the drug shop ‘The Gilded Unicorn’ in Amsterdam, addresses a number of exotic medicines in his poems, such as musk, incense, the miracle drug theriac, Egyptian mumia, and even the blood of Charles I of England. In Dangerous Drugs, these texts are studied for the first time. The study shows how Six, through a process of self-presentation as a sober and restrained merchant, but also as a penitent sinner, thirsting for God’s grace, links early modern drug abuse to different desires, such as lust, avarice, pride and curiosity. The book shows also how an early modern debate on exotic drugs contributed to an important shift in early modern natural science, from a drug lore based on mythical and fabulous concepts, to a botany based on observation and systematic examination.

Abstract:

The ninth chapter presents Examples of good practice for the creation of accessible urban space, which have been practiced by multiple actors in Brno city under specific circumstances and which can serve as inspiration and motivation for other municipalities in their barrier-free policies and practice. While being the source for inspiration can be their principal goal, another goal is to archive the good practice. The authors start the chapter defining themselves against methods guidelines for barrier-free space; methods are introduced as a certain conceptual tool for strict, systematic and universal creation of barrier-free/accessible space, which can be too binding and less open to eventual changes. On the other hand, Examples of good practice represent a different approach, open to eventual developments, unexpected phenomena and trying to inspire for creation of accessible space everywhere and every time, in pragmatic, unprecedented and diverse ways. As has been indicated above, Methods guides for barrier-free space can be bound by three universalities, which usually prevent experimenting and creativity. Examples of good practice aim to inspire and incent creativity, and thus represent a universal “will” to be creative, unhinged and active. Each example consists of several parts: Illustrative story presenting the barriers and related pitfalls by describing the original situation and the need for intervention; Analysis concentrating on the pitfalls; Suggested solution with a discussion; a Concrete realization in Brno city, showing the concrete process of dealing with the so-far describe accessibility; then Solution limits are presented; Conclusion, which offers insight for future application, and Time axis outlining the whole process from a chronological perspective. Each Example is also documented by photographs showing the original state full of barriers and pitfalls, and the state when a chosen solution has been realized.

Abstract:

In his selections for Tales from Ovid (1995) Hughes includes several incest narratives: ‘Myrrha’, ‘Venus and Adonis (and Atalanta)’, ‘Pygmalion’, and ‘Tereus’. In arguing that they, in addition to other ‘late’ Hughes poems, develop dialogic relationships with Plath’s earlier texts, the chapter builds upon Lynda K. Bundtzen’s observation that Hughes’s Birthday Letters (1998) is centrally informed by Ovid’s tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. Analysing the self reflexiveness of aspects of Ovidian narrative, Philip Hardie has commented upon the ‘narcissistic and incestuous relationship between author and his book.’ The complexities that Hardie outlines in Ovid’s relationship with text are extended in the chaoter to consider the relationships of the two poets, Plath and Hughes, with their own and each other’s texts. In the process of pursuing this idea across key poems by Plath and Hughes, the chapter further explores ways in which Ovidian mythology is transformed not only through translation but also through its proper and improper relation with other mythologisations and metaphorisations. These range from the Garden of Eden, and different versions of the Underworld, and return us to Shakespeare.

The legal continuities from the Bible to the Qur’an described in Chapters 1 and 2 largely point to a continuity of practice, coupled with the type of broader lexical and conceptual continuity, amidst partial change, one can expect if laws develop over centuries and pass several cultural and linguistic boundaries in the process. Yet in the case of the Qur’an’s legislation on prohibited marriages (in Q 4 Sūrat al-Nisāʾ 22–23), law as formulated in the Hebrew Bible seems to have been accorded a more palpable presence. This chapter will argue that the nature and order of the qur’anic prohibitions suggests that the Scripture of Islam integrates and updates a catalogue very similar to the one preserved in the Hebrew Bible (in Lev 18:6–18), which, once again, is addressed to Israelites and gerim alike. The Qur’an, in this case, can be argued to stand closer to the Bible than Latin, Greek, and West Syrian law, which evidently reflect their Roman legal context. In focusing on the Bible, the Qur’an could even be said to share an attitude with the East Syrian tradition on this matter, yet even here we can find manifest echoes of Byzantine legal reforms. The Qur’an’s general leniency for certain types of first-time offenders, along with its dispensations for marriages contracted prior to a couple’s joining the qur’anic community, is argued to stand in conversation with both West and East Syrian as well as with Byzantine marriage law. We will see that the qur’anic incest laws equally maintain a demonstrable pagan Arabian heritage.

Abstract:

Jeffrey Eugenides’s 2002 epic Middlesex uses its intersex narrator, Callie/Cal, to interrogate the process of radically changing identity. Cal is a guevedoce, possessing a rare but real genetic condition that transforms apparent girls into men at puberty. From butch schoolgirl to effeminate patriarch, never simply male or female, Cal’s life is passing. The novel questions, however, whether any categories need be so exclusive. Cal’s ambiguous identity echoes myriad others, in plot lines concerning incest, immigration, Islam, and more. Through shifting genres, secret identities, and dramatic plot twists, the novel demonstrates that when society demands strict categories, we are all essentially passing. The chapter gestures forward to a time when the pretense of passing will disappear, and we will all embrace our multifarious, uncategorizable selves.

Since the coming of the so-called Arab Spring, there has been a mounting controversy on whether the dismissal of authoritarian regimes in the Arab world has effectively paved the way to democratization. In this vein, the reflection on political consensus or the transition to a new political order becomes pertinent and requires academic investigation on political change which can avoid uncertainties and “the fears of the unknown”. The main contention of this study, devoted to the Algerian case, pertains to the fact that in the light of domestic demands and external pressures, a move towards a consensus based on gradual political and economic reforms which were incepted in 2011, may avoid this country to be drawn into political turmoil, terrorism and social chaos as it happened in other Arab countries.

This chapter examines some of the themes of David Cronenberg's Shivers (1975). Cronenberg's impetus to make horror films had initially come from his recognition of mortality in the ageing process. His identity had been bound up with a youth-identified culture; on some level, losing youth meant a loss of identity. If the bourgeois stability of Starliner Tower was not appealing to him on some level, it would not be a tomb he could imagine being sealed up in — Shivers' fear of Starliner life is a kind of claustrophobia. Meanwhile, the film's later scenes of rape, paedophilia, and incest, however blackly comic, all evoke the audience's horror and acknowledge the taboos they transgress; Cronenberg's awareness of the gravity of his visions is not in doubt. The chapter then looks at the comedy of Shivers.

This chapter reflects on the evolution and construction of African women bodies as racialised, eroticized, and exoticised objects of desire, repudiation, and control, giving justification to colonisation. Before European contact with Africa, human sexuality and sexual services were sacred and highly valued. Africa had a well-organised and consistent socialisation process where elders initiated young members of society into the concepts and the acts of sexuality without shame, ridicule, or condemnation. Most sexual energies in pre-colonial Africa were expressed differently through multiple sexual behaviours including incest, concubinage, public sexual services, and ritual sex, among others. Nevertheless, these behaviours rarely involved direct payment for the sexual services rendered. With the advent of colonialism in Africa, women who innocently engaged in these various sexual services were demonised, sexualized, and most of them labelled and integrated into a system of regulated prostitution.

This chapter focuses on the experience of a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist, who was invited by a Neurologist to help his team with the process of Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizure (PNES) diagnostic disclosure. Often, their patients are aware of trauma, such as physical or emotional abuse, incest, and rape; patients report they told a parent, usually their mother, but often they were told it did not happen and never to speak of it again. Other times, there is little or no memory of their childhood at all. The patients also report poor treatment in their local emergency room. Anytime family members have the perception that their loved one is “faking” the events, this will likely result in a lack of family support. Family members can be very helpful as the patient may minimize the sadness/anger felt about a loss. The chapter then offers advice to aid patients’ and family members’ acceptance of the psychogenic diagnosis.

Las formas de vida que podemos observar en las comunidades monacales cristianas responden a una regla que determina las divisiones del tiempo y la acción de sus miembros. Es precisamente en estas dos dimensiones donde en palabras de filósofo Giorgio Agamben se desarrolla una práctica incesante de su ser monacal. Es decir, la indivisibilidad entre tiempos de ocio y de oficio. Ora et labora, literalmente: «reza y trabaja», significa también buscar a Dios en cualquier momento del día: en tiempo de labores, en el sueño, en el cuidado, mientras se come etc. Desde 2016 este ha sido el objeto de estudio del grupo de trabajo que conformo. Para traer esto a una reflexión sobre mi práctica artística, se hace necesario despojar a la cuestión del monacato de toda ortodoxia religiosa, de toda búsqueda en el orden divino. Lo que hemos de tomar es una gran metáfora, la idea agambeniana de la «práctica incesante» que me ayuda a hacer comprender en qué consiste, bajo mi punto de vista, la tarea del arte. Con el presente artículo se quiere abordar, desde una investigación basada en la práctica, las implicaciones que este proceso ha tenido sobre mis modos de hacer, respecto a la adopción de la escritura como praxis, ―cuestión que actualmente desarrollo en la tesis doctoral que escribo―; o respecto a la opción de hacerme un tanto perdidizo o recóndito en el sistema del arte. Este texto pretende ser una aportación desde una mirada situada a las reflexiones contemporáneas sobre la práctica artística. Como propone el lema del congreso ANIAV 2022, Devenir monje/a trata sobre una serie de conexiones, reconexiones y desconexiones que han dado cuenta de un proceso vital indiscernible entre arte y vida.

Abstract:

In Aotearoa New Zealand, as a consequence of colonisation, generations of Māori have been alienated from both their language and culture. This project harnessed an artistic re-consideration of pūrākau (traditional stories) such that previously fractured or erased stories relating to Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga were orchestrated into a coherent narrative network. Storytelling is not the same as reading a story aloud or reciting a piece from memory. It also differs from performed drama, although it shares certain characteristics with all of these art forms. As a storyteller I look into the eyes of the audience and we both construct a virtual world. Together the listener and the teller compose the tale. The storyteller uses voice, pause and gesture; a listener, from the first moment, absorbs, reacts and co-creates. For each, the pūrākau is unique. Its story images differ. The experience can be profound, exercising thinking and emotional transformation. In the design of 14 episodes of the Māui narrative, connections were made between imagery, sound and the resonance of traditional, oral storytelling. The resulting Māui pūrākau, functions not only to revive the beauty of te reo Māori, but also to resurface traditional values that lie embedded within these ancient stories. The presentation contributes to knowledge through three distinct points. First, it supports language revitilisation by employing ancient words, phrases and karakia that are heard. Thus, we encounter language expressed not in its neutral written form, but in relation to tone, pause, rhythm, pronunciation and context. Second, it connects the Māui narratives into a cohesive whole. In doing this it also uses whakapapa to make connections and to provide meaning and chronology both within and between the episodes. Third, it elevates the pūrākau beyond the level of simple children’s stories. The inclusion of karakia reinforces that these incantations are in fact sacred texts. Rich in ancient language they give us glimspes into ancient epistemologies. Appreciating this elevated state, we can understand how these pūrākau dealt with complex human and societal issues including abortion, rape, incest, murder, love, challenging traditional hierarchies, the power of women, and the sacredness of knowledge and ritual. Finally, the presentation considers both in theory and practice, the process of intergenerational bowdlerisation.
