Abstract:
The combination of Hyper-Automation, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a game-changing method for improving business processes from start to finish in the quickly changing field of business technology. The important definitions, foundations, evolution, significance, research gaps, and the need for this study in the contemporary corporate climate will all be covered in detail in this extensive introduction. The use of cutting-edge technology, such as RPA and AI, to automate processes in a way that goes beyond the scope of conventional automation is known as hyper-automation. Hyper-automation is the process of automating any repetitious work that may be done so that businesses can become more efficient, cut expenses, and simplify their operations. The term "robotic process automation," or RPA, describes the use of software "bots" to automate regular and highly repetitive processes that are normally completed by human personnel. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is the study of how computers, especially computer systems, can mimic human cognitive functions including learning, reasoning, and self-correction.

Abstract:
Abstract Automation in agricultural machinery is a crucial driver of productivity and sustainability. Some automation features like automated steering and real-time data analytics are already state-of-the-art. On the other hand, a human driver performs the optimization of the working speed manually, and the automation of this is an ongoing challenge. Process quality and process efficiency are the two main targets in this optimization. Agricultural soil tillage requires achieving both. Therefore, the correlation between process quality optimization and process efficiency is fundamental, and vice versa. The approach presented in this paper shows how the two optimization targets of efficiency and process quality can be optimized and aligned together. Optical sensors determine various parameters to describe and model the process quality. The measured machine state determines the characteristics of the interaction forces between the machine and the environment. A machine learning algorithm describes the relationships in the drivetrain. The two process targets are each predicted for different working speeds and are combined in the form of a boundary target and an optimization target to identify one optimized target speed value.

Abstract:
This research study investigates the influence of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) on operational efficiency and business process optimization. The study adopted a systematic literature review approach to collect and analyze relevant academic articles, industry reports, and conference proceedings. Findings reveal that RPA implementation significantly improves operational efficiency by automating repetitive and rule-based tasks. This automation reduces manual effort, minimizes errors, and speeds up process execution, leading to increased productivity, faster response times, and cost savings for organizations. RPA also contributes to business process optimization by streamlining workflows, eliminating bottlenecks, and standardizing processes. Standardized execution of tasks through RPA improves process efficiency, quality, and visibility, allowing organizations to make data-driven decisions and continuously optimize their operations. However, challenges such as process complexity, employee resistance to change, integration issues, and data security concerns need to be addressed for a successful RPA implementation. Organizations must develop a comprehensive implementation plan, establish a governance framework, and foster a culture of collaboration to overcome these challenges. The practical implications derived from this research offer guidance for organizations that are considering or implementing RPA solutions. Recommendations include conducting a thorough process analysis, developing a comprehensive implementation plan, establishing governance mechanisms, encouraging collaboration, and continuously optimizing processes. While this study provides valuable insights into the impact of RPA on operational efficiency and business process optimization, it acknowledges the limitations of the research, such as the reliance on literature up to September 2021 and the subjectivity of the data analysis.

Abstract:
Market globalization and mass customization requirements are forcing companies towards automation of their product development processes. Many task-specific software solutions provide localized automation. Coordinating these local solutions to automate higher-level processes requires significant software maintenance costs due to the incompatibility of the software tools and the dynamic nature of the product development environment. Current automation methods do not provide the required level of flexibility to operate in this dynamic environment. An autonomic product development process automation strategy is proposed in order to provide a flexible, standardized approach to product development process automation and to significantly reduce the software maintenance costs associated with traditional automation methods. Key elements of the strategy include a formal approach to decompose product development processes into services, a method to describe functional and quality attributes of services, a process modeling algorithm to configure processes composed of services, a method to evaluate process utility based on quality metrics and user preferences, and an implementation that allows a user to instantiate the optimal process. Because the framework allows a user to rapidly reconfigure and select optimal processes as new services are introduced or as requirements change, the framework should reduce burdensome software maintenance costs associated with traditional automation methods and provide a more flexible approach.

Abstract:
The present work is concerned with the advancement of the knowledge of structural optimization in engineering design while focusing on efficient and easy to use ways of setting-up the required automated processes as well as the problems arising from it. Three industry examples are considered. In the first example a software tool that serves as a hands-on decision guidance for many occurring design situations for structured wall PE pipes is developed. In order to avoid licensing fees only public domain software or in-house code are used. It offers the efficient and automated simulation of the ringstiffness test as well as the most common pipe installation scenarios. In addition, an optimization feature is implemented for the design of optimum pipe profiles with regards to the ringstiffness test. In the second example a framework for the optimum design of carbon fibre mountain bike frames is developed. An extensively parameterized and automated simulation model is created that allows for varying tube shapes, paths and laminate ply thicknesses as well as joint locations. For improved efficiency a decomposition approach has been employed that decomposes the original optimization problem into a size optimization sub problem and a shape optimization top level problem. The former is solved by the built-in optimization tool in OptiStruct and the latter by means of surrogate based optimization where each experiment in the DoE is a full size optimization. The third example is concerned with the optimum design of a blade for a novel vertical axis wind turbine. A design approach similar to those with horizontal axes is chosen. The altered design requirements are accounted for by creating a parameterized simulation model and performing size optimization runs for 32 models with different material settings and shear web locations where the model creation process has been automated.

Abstract:
This dissertation describes the design and optimization of a CO2-capture unit using aqueous amines to remove of carbon dioxide from the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant. In particular we construct a monolithic model of a carbon capture unit and conduct a rigorous optimization to find the lowest solvent regeneration energy yet reported. Carbon capture is primarily motivated by environmental concerns. The goal of our work is to help make carbon capture and storage (CCS) a more efficient for the sort of universal deployment called for by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to stabilize anthropomorphic contributions to climate change, though there are commercial applications such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR). We employ the latest simulation tools from Aspen Tech to rigorously model, design, and optimize acid gas systems. We extend this modeling approach to leverage Aspen Plus in the .NET framework through Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM). Our work successfully increases the efficiency of acid gas capture. We report a result optimally implementing multiple energy-saving schemes to reach a thermal regeneration energy of 1.67 GJ/tonne. By contrast, the IPCC had reported that leading technologies range from 2.7 to 3.3 GJ/tonne in 2005. Our work has received significant endorsement for industrial implementation by the senior management from the world's second largest chemical corporation, Sinopec, as being the most efficient technology known today.<br>Ph. Abstract:
As many tasks considering structural design in civil engineering become digitalised, the possibility of creating a more effective workflow increases. The development of computer programs that can handle large amounts of data and assist the decision making during design process increases the requirement of the data management to fully utilize the potential of a digital workflow. The design of reinforcement layout of concrete structures is time demanding and often performed manually. These characteristics of a workflow indicates that it may be suitable to be subject to automation. The aim of this thesis is to highlight the potential and the difficulties of using automated design procedures in civil engineering with focus on reinforcement layout design. Specifically, the selection of straight rebars and their placement within concrete structures has been studied with respect to buildability and the amount of reinforcement used. A computer program has been developed to select rebar diameters and arrangement, satisfying the required amount of reinforcement as well as some of the rules according to the Eurocode standard. In order to find feasible solutions, an optimization of the amount of reinforcement as well as different measures of buildability is performed, using a genetic algorithm. The result from two case studies showed that the program managed to perform tasks similar to an engineer and create design solutions which reduced the amount of reinforcement and the number of rebar types. Furthermore, it was shown that consideration to the identified buildability parameters played an important role in finding an optimal solution. The findings indicate that the design of reinforcement layout may be automated and that a more effective workflow can be achieved.<br>I takt med att fler delar av projekteringen av anläggningskonstruktioner blir digitaliserade ökar möjligheterna för att effektivisera arbetet.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The industrial economy has been dominated by a one-way production and consumption model. Closing loops for materials has seen an upswing in popularity. The focus though has been on the environmental aspects instead of the economic benefits from implementing closed loops. With an increasing PVC consumption, the interest of implementing a closed loop of material management is increasing. PVC is a highly desired thermoplastic material because of its low cost and high performance. The high performance of PVC causes the materials to have a long lifetime which delays the end-of-life waste management. The option to utilize landfilling to deal with the accumulating waste has become a less acceptable option because of higher costs, environmental dangers, and decreasing availability of landfilling areas. When recycling PVC, it is important to ensure a high accuracy within the sorting process. A lower purity in the recycling process could lead to a lower quality of the material. With the increasing worldwide demand for PVC, which exceeds 35 million metric tons per year, the demand for a robust waste material management is high. Objectives: The objective with this master thesis is to provide a deeper understanding of the affects of introducing a closed loop of material management of PVC by optimizing the upscaling sorting process based on a maximization of the savings and the CO2 emission savings. Methods: An optimization model was developed based on previous literature regarding optimizing sorting processes and recycling processes. Different scenarios were set up to try to optimize the savings and CO2 emission savings for an upscaling sorting process of PVC. The scenarios were based on different changes in different variables. The model and the scenarios were implemented at a case study. The case study was made at the PVC-floor company Tarkett in Ronneby. Results: The different scenarios were compared based on their monthly savings and monthly CO2 emission savings. The results showed that when dealing with a larger volume of incomed material, a more capital-intensive solution should be implemented. It also showed that an upscaling of a sorting process in PVC-floor recycling can be financially feasible while implementing a closed loop of material management. Conclusions: The recent trend in waste material management indicates that many companies are implementing a closed loop of material management through capital-intensive sorting process to manage the increasing availability of waste. The comparisons of the different scenarios revealed that, if the monthly savings is to be optimized, there should be an increase in incomed material and the sorting process should implement a more capital-intensive solution utilizing automated sorting machines. If the monthly CO2 emission savings should be maximized, the incomed material should be maximized and handled by a labor-intensive solution.<br>Bakgrund: Den industriella ekonomin har dominerats av en enkelriktad produktions- och konsumtionsmodell.

Abstract:
<p>The hot rod and wire rolling process is widely used to produce rolled iron alloys in different shapes and dimensions. This industry has been under a constant development during the last decades. Today, complex geometries are produced at a high speed since it is possible to use several stands in each mill at the same time. A reason for the development is rising demands from customers. The most important demands are to save energy, to get better material properties and higher dimension accuracy. To meet these demands on speed and accuracy, a better control of how the material behaves in the process is needed. There is also a need to be able to quickly find a new setup of the mill in order to be able to produce other geometries.</p><p>The purpose with this Master Thesis is to model and simulate the hot rod and wire rolling process with the modeling language Modelica. The model is given the known inputs and the desired final result in order to compute the unknown inputs to the mill. To meet these goals, a model that depends on for example the gap between the rolls, the roll speeds and the tensions between different stands is needed. It should be possible to make simulations to find roll speeds or to calculate the tensions caused by known roll speeds.</p><p>With the help of models of the steps in the process, a model has been developed in Modelica. The model can be expanded to a mill with an arbitrary number of stands. In the search for the best way of modeling a hot rod and wire rolling mill, several algorithms have been simulated and analyzed in Modelica. The results from all simulations show that the billet and the groove should be described by different functions for the upper and the lower half. Furthermore, it is not a good solution to use only polynomials to describe the shapes in the process. A function with infinite derivative in the endpoints is needed to describe the billet in an acceptable way. The problem has also been solved using Matlab. In this work it is shown that the Modelica solution is preferred, compared to solving the optimization problems in Matlab. An advantage with the Modelica solution is that the model can be split into several easily connected sub models. Unfortunately it was even hard for Modelica to solve general problems. The describing functions made it hard to find the intersections and to keep the area constant during the rotation.

Abstract:
Companies that deliver products and services do not usually have a clear picture of the processes within the company itself. Such an approach leads to a situation in which the company's growth is limited and the possibility of non-compliance increases significantly. In addition, a large number of organizations function without any sector, department, or at least an employee dealing with processes and management systems as a whole. The cause of such a phenomenon is an underdeveloped awareness of process management and the concept of quality as a company's primary activity. Therefore, in this paper, an analysis will be performed to show the impact of optimization and automation of business processes on quality improvement. Then, by reviewing the literature, an operational model will be generated to determine its impact on increasing the speed of business processes and reducing variations, process errors, and business costs.

Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers’s (USACE) Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) rainfall-runoff model is widely used within the research community to develop both event-based and continuous rainfall-runoff models. The soil moisture accounting (SMA) algorithm is commonly used for long-term simulations. Depending on the final model setup, 12 to 18 parameters are needed to characterize the modeled watershed’s canopy, surface, soil, and routing processes, all of which are potential calibration parameters. HEC-HMS includes optimization tools to facilitate model calibration, but only initial conditions (ICs) can be calibrated when using the gridded SMA algorithm. Calibrating a continuous SMA HEC-HMS model is an iterative process that can require hundreds of simulations, a time intensive process requiring automation. HEC-HMS is written in Java and is predominantly run through a graphical user interface (GUI). As such, conducting a long-term gridded SMA calibration is infeasible using the GUI. USACE Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) has written a workflow that utilizes the existing Jython application programming interface (API) to batch run HEC-HMS simulations with Python. The workflow allows for gridded SMA HEC-HMS model sensitivity and calibration analyses to be conducted in a timely manner.
