Abstract:
The capture and reuse of design decisions and their rationale is increasingly being recognized as very important in increasing software development and maintenance productivity. By using these concepts, the DOD has recognized the ability to achieve a significant reduction in development and maintenance costs on all software development projects. The REMAP model provides the primitives and mechanisms for a structured representation of this information. Our thesis implements a graphical user interface for the REMAP model to facilitate easy acquisition and reuse of process knowledge. Much of the 'informal' components of design decision and rationale may he represented using multimedia documents. The ability to link such documents and search for 'relevant' components of process knowledge from these is a key attribute of the HyperPKM model. HyperPKM provides the capability to link and search multimedia documents distributed in the WWW to the REMAP objects displayed in the graph browser.

The theoretical part will be focused on presenting information within the process management. Some of the pieces of this theoretical information will be were slightly modified by internal Continental procedures and applied in the practical part of the thesis in order to redesign current purchasing process of non production material. The contents of the practical part of this thesis are the analysis of the current purchasing process of non-production material in the plant of Continental. The intention is to identify the waste and obstacles in the process. The main target is to improve the process in consideration of efficiency, lead time reduction and, if applicable, cost savings. Once the waste in the process is identified, the 100% value added ideal state is going to be developed, under consideration of implementing the improvements, which have been identified in the current state. Based on the differences between the current state and the ideal state of the process, the future state is going to be mapped.

Abstract:

The growing competitiveness in distribution market has led organizations to rethink each one of its processes and question their mode of operation for the sake of better results. This dissertation develops an empirical study about the price tag modification process within a large distribution company operating in Portugal. Based on a survey performed in four hypermarkets and one supermarket, through direct observation, it was possible to map out the physical process of price tag modification. The retrieved data made way for a detailed mapping about the way the activities relate to one another within the process, the people they involve, their duration and costs. This is a regular process in the company, prompting human and physical resources and with a large room for improvement. In that sense, the present dissertation drafts two solutions that aim mainly at cost reduction, increase of productivity and the improvement of customer service based on greater price reliability.

Maxwell, Nicola Claire. "Mapping the inflammatory process in neonatal lung disease." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54354/.

Full text
Abstract:
Chronic lung disease (CLD) of prematurity is a significant complication of preterm birth in which the neutrophil appears to be the key cell of inflammation. Lack of resolution of neutrophilic inflammation, due to delayed or dysregulated neutrophil apoptosis, is thought to be an important component of the pathogenesis of CLD. In this thesis, I sought to examine the inflammatory process in the lungs of ventilated newborn infants. I have established a reliable method for the use of flow cytometry, a technique not previously reported in the study of neonatal bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples, and have described both the cellular and supernatant components of BAL from term and preterm infants, paying particular attention to the role of infection. I found higher peak neutrophil counts in infants developing CLD, as well as more immature, monocyte-like, macrophages and higher rates of detection of microbial DNA when compared to term infants and infants whose respiratory distress syndrome resolved. I focused more specifically on the role of neutrophil apoptosis in CLD and sought to understand the mechanism for the delay in neutrophil apoptosis in newborn infants and how this may impact on lung disease. BAL supernatants from term infants showed more pro-apoptotic activity against adult neutrophils than BAL from preterm infants. I found a delay in apoptosis in lung neutrophils in preterm infants and confirmed this delay in blood neutrophils of term infants compared to adults. I have shown that this delay might be due to differential expression of anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-xl and Mcl-1 between cord and adult neutrophils, which has not previously been described.

Abstract:
The topic of this thesis is occupancy mapping for mobile robots, with an emphasis on a novel method for continuous occupancy mapping using Gaussian processes. In the new method, spatial correlation is accounted for in a natural way, and an a priori discretization of the area to be mapped is not necessary as within most other common methods. The main contribution of this thesis is the construction of a Gaussian process library for C++, and the use of this library to implement the continuous occupancy mapping algorithm. The continuous occupancy mapping is evaluated using both simulated and real world experimental data. The main result is that the method, in its current form, is not fit for online operations due to its computational complexity. By using approximations and ad hoc solutions, the method can be run in real time on a mobile robot, though not without losing many of its benefits.

Abstract:

Abstract:
An unexpected biological removal of phosphorous in IVL Hammarby Sjöstadsverket pilot membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment process was investigated by three distinct methods. a) Investigation and quantification of the biological phosphorous uptake (bio-P) capacity by phosphate release tests (PRT), b) validation of bio-P occurrence by granular polyphosphate (poly-P) staining and microscopy and c) metagenomic community structure analysis to map the sludge habitat. Validation of phosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) was successfully performed using the Neisser Methylene Blue Metachromatic staining protocol. Quantification by a novel staining protocol gave indications of the relative activity of bio-P in the bioreactor process line. The bio-P activity by PRT showed high capacity of phosphate accumulation in the treatment process. Furthermore, the use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to induce stressful conditions was successfully shown to increase the release rate and depletion of intracellular poly-P of PAO. Finally, the impact of temperature dependency in PRT was investigated.A metagenomic community structure analysis by 16S rRNA successfully prepared 28 samples for sequencing and analysis. The project has successfully validated and quantified bio-P with an improved methodology as a foundation for upcoming studies of the treatment process.
Slutligen undersöktes temperaturberoendet i PRT.

Abstract:
While the maturity of process mining algorithms increases and more process mining tools enter the market, process mining projects still face the problem of different levels of abstraction when comparing events with modeled business activities. Current approaches for event log abstraction try to abstract from the events in an automated way that does not capture the required domain knowledge to fit business activities. This can lead to misinterpretation of discovered process models. We developed an approach that aims to abstract an event log to the same abstraction level that is needed by the business. We use domain knowledge extracted from existing process documentation to semi-automatically match events and activities. Our abstraction approach is able to deal with n:m relations between events and activities and also supports concurrency. We evaluated our approach in two case studies with a German IT outsourcing company.

Full text
Abstract:
Bakgrund: Företag arbetar dagligen i processer.

Full text
Abstract:
In an existing process, Rapid 3D Mapping datasets are automatically generated and converted to a format suitable for simulators and mission support systems. However, this high level automation does not allow manual error fixes and the addition of important features to the map data. The aim of this thesis is to create a process that allows the editing of a number of R3DM tiles with an existing 3D modeling tool and, after editing, to propagate the changes to the lower levels of detail in the data. Two solutions for the propagation, a standard solution and an alternative, are presented in this thesis. The motivation behind the alternative solution is to keep the original geometry of the R3DM data to retain the good rendering performance which those data sets permit. To achieve this the new model will be added to the R3DM data at only the highest level of detail, and this model is then simplified before propagation to the lower levels of detail. The resulting procedure to fix errors and add new important features is very effective, and reduces the time required for users to edit the many levels of the R3DM data.

Kurul, Esra. "Re-using listed buildings through conversion : a process mapping approach." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2003. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1382928/.

Full text
Abstract:
Re-use is the fundamental means of sustaining and thus conserving modest architectural heritage (Grade II listed buildings). Currently, it remains a marginal activity within property development as the direct agents perceive the re-use process to be more complex, construction and project costs to be higher, and the project duration to be longer than new built projects. As a result, the risk of vacancy and obsolescence in architectural heritage Increases. The author asserts that understanding the actual dynamics of the process, and identifying the factors that increase the chances of overcoming challenges associated with re-use, and thus achieving a successful outcome, would be Instrumental In firstly evaluating the validity of the above perceptions, which are widely published in the related literature, and then proposing a 'good practice re-use process' that can be adopted to similar projects. Hence, agents would become equipped with the know-how of carrying out re-use projects. Eventually, re-use would move towards the centre of the property development domain, and subsequently our capacity for sustaining architectural heritage would have increased. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the process of re-using listed buidings. It adopts a process mapping approach m a case study context. The development processes of three re-use projects in London are mapped. The process mapping approach adopted is novel to the property development sector. Its novelty lies in two areas. Firstly, it maps the actual processes instead of proposing a normative process protocol. Secondly, it devises a methodological approach, which is both flexible enough to allow data to 'speak for itself', and systematic enough to allow for rigorous and consistent analysis of rich and extensive qualitative data. Comparative analysis of the maps follow process mapping. Here, the aim is to assess process performances and project outcomes. Then a 'good practice guide for re-use process' is proposed. This is based on the findings of the comparative analysis. The research has shown that the re-use process is complex, but is still possible to achieve success if the development team is competent in managing complexity, flexible and responsive, and adopts a holistic project perspective. Even if the development teams do not have these attributes, they can successfully complete a re-use project if the market is buoyant. The buoyancy of the market can thus counter-balance the direct agents' reluctance to get involved and increase the opportunities of re-using listed buildings. The challenge is to establish and sustain the attributes the development team needs to possess to achieve success in the development/construction industry where short-termism still overrides. Until this is achieved, re- - use is likely to continue to be a marginal activity dominated by a small number of development teams with expertise in the field at locations and times of market depression.

Abstract:
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) continues to be the most accepted approach for the treatment of addictions in the United States. However, due to recent evidence questioning the effectiveness of AA, the need for alternative approaches to the treatment of addictions has become clear. The following research addresses the efficacy of one such alternative, Rational Recovery (RR). Node-Link Mapping (NLM), a graphic communication technique which uses links and nodes as building blocs to facilitate and enhance communication of information as well as awareness in a counseling environment, was implemented to enhance the recovery process. Three groups of ten (10), chemically dependent, adjudicated subjects were exposed to three different treatment approaches at an outpatient counseling center. The Experimental group received RR with NLM, the Comparison group was exposed only to RR, and the Control group continued in treatment according to the protocol of the counseling agency. All subjects were given the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-2 (SASSI-2) as a measurement of symptoms associated with chemical dependency. The subjects were also administered the Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (Rotter I-E Scale) to determine locus of control prior to treatment and any change after treatment.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the global economy imposes great competition between companies that creates an intense pressure. Due to this increasing competition, companies have to keep improving their process for becoming more efficient to lower costs while improving their quality level and providing a better service. A company that does not improve every year is a company that is dying. Although Kraft Foods Inc. is the world’s second largest food company, they also need to keep improving in order to maintain its competitive position on the market and this is why they have been implementing the Lean culture in France since 2007. They want to become more efficient by eliminating all the activities that the customer is not willing to pay for, defined as waste. Providing more value with fewer resources, goal of Lean manufacturing, should make Kraft Foods France even more competitive. However, in order to become Leaner, the nine plants of Kraft Foods Biscuit needed a structured method because the first difficulty of eliminating wastes lies in identifying them. The main purpose of this thesis was to develop one of the most important Lean tools to identify wastes called “Value Stream Mapping”. This master thesis will therefore explain and describe how mapping the value stream can help identifying and eliminating the wastes but also can be a priceless support to share a common vision of the value stream among managers. This tool should be seen as the starting point of any improvements projects since it allows identifying opportunities for improvement that will improve the bottom line of the company. VSM should be used to challenge the status quo and the behaviors of all employees in order to improve Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, Sustainability and Morale. This master thesis will deal with the two main missions I led in order to reach this goal. The first mission was to develop a standard of the Value Stream Mapping for Kraft Foods France. I was asked to participate in the structuralizing and in the standardization of the VSM tool for the company. The tool was first analyzed and then a taylor-made VSM tool was developed to meet the characteristics and needs of the food industry. The last step of this mission was to train managers and engineers so that they can lead VSM projects themselves, in any plants, that can help them identifying improvements to be done. The second mission was to apply this method in different production lines to show managers the effectiveness of the tool for identifying rooms for improvement that could increase the productivity of theses studied production lines. For example, the project at Granville’s plant, described in the last part of the thesis, shows what types of improvements can be identified thanks to a Value Stream Mapping project since this project led to a productivity improvement of 40 k€. On completion of this thesis, I wish to have contributed to the emergence of the good use of Value Stream Mapping tool at Kraft Foods that will help the company to keep improving and focusing on customers.

This report shows the value of knowing your processes inside a company. The methods used in to do this have been first of all through process mapping and for in depth study, process cards were used to measure the process time and total lead time. This showed the location of bottlenecks and overall process capacity. With the data collected, suggestion on how to decrease storage, throughput time and total lead time is given. The study has been conducted at Intelbras in San Jose, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Intelbras is a telecommunication company which produces telephones, security cameras and switchboards. Two production processes is studied, the Telefone Sem fio, SFL, which produce cordless telephones and Central, CAL, which produce switchboards.Through simulation this paper shows improvement suggestions on how to better handle the flow of material by introducing sequencing into the production and FIFO in the storage handling, everything in order to decrease total lead time and increasing throughput time.Process mapping has proved to be a great tool in order to understand how a production process works and integrates with other departments. In supplement of process cards, valuable data is collected and used for analysing further improvements such as making a balancing program and calculating where and how big buffers is needed at different processes.

Qu, S. "Demolish-IT : the development of a process management tool for the demolition industry." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6375.

Full text
Abstract:
Today most demolition projects undertaken are complex and involve many parties who must comply with a myriad of regulations as well as other constraints (e.g. finance). The management of demolition projects requires individual team members to have a wide range of skills and knowledge in addition to practical experience. Demolition processes currently operated are frequently performed in an unstructured, intuitive manner with considerable reliance on experience, skill, knowledge or subjective judgement of the demolition engineer or other individual responsible for a demolition project. Research on demolition ‘process management' is a new area that has rarely been addressed. However, within the building design and construction management sectors, there are a number of intelligent solutions that have been developed to assist in the management of business processes and business process re-engineering. Process management systems and process mapping through the use of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) technology have been applied to help the construction industry significantly improve performance. In an attempt to provide intelligent support to the management of dynamic demolition processes, this research reports upon that was developed using ICT applications a management system prototype entitled “Demolish-IT”. The prototype of Demolish-IT utilises four tiers of information which includes: (1) the standard demolition process map; (2) user-defined demolition process map; (3) demolition task manager; and (4) database of demolition process requirements. The prototype provides on ICT platform that unifies demolition processes and requirements to achieve improved process management. The research involved a combination of face-to-face interviews with demolition experts; real projects document reviews and site observation to produce the generic demolition process map. Other products of the work included: database solutions to store demolition process requirements; and process modelling to manage demolition task compliance flow within relevant industry standards. Evaluation of the research work proved its validity, acceptance and applicability within industry. Future work will aim to transpose the outputs into commercially viable software.

Brown, Cody Ryan. "Supporting a process-oriented model in MPI through fine-grain mapping." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42152.

Full text
Abstract:
The need for intuitive parallel programming designs has grown with the rise of modern many-core processors. Process-oriented models promote high scalability by using small isolated components that interact to produce complex applications. Such models are intuitive by forcing scalability to be a design requirement. The popular MPI messaging library has not exploited fine-grain models due to its coarse-grain implementations. The binding of processes often uses a coarse-grain management system, which is done by sequentially assigning ranks to a list of machines. This may be suitable for coarse-grain applications, but inadequate for fine-grain applications with large process grouping demands; a more flexible, manageable and scalability specification is necessary to support a process-oriented model. The use of FG-MPI exposes additional concurrency through a new layer of mapping by providing smaller units of parallelism: a desirable feature in function-level programming. This collocation layer requires a fine-grain mapping mechanism to optimize communication. A graph specification is proposed that allows communication patterns, collocation of MPI processes, and binding optimizations to be extracted from such a structure. The work presented extends and evaluates MPI to a fine-grain process-oriented model and provides a graphical mapping and binding specification. Evaluation of function-level applications is done through Pilot, a CSP-like library for MPI. The smallest unit of parallelism in this architecture is evaluated and shows that small communication overheads occur when comparing hundreds of large tasks to hundreds of thousands of fine-grain tasks. The graph representation is based on Kahn Process Networks. This provides a simplistic and intuitive model to represent and organize large function-level applications. A tool is developed that reads in a graph structure and performs operations such as auto-constructing wiring diagram code, determining optimal collocated maps based on communication, and producing a binding specification. This tool is modular and extensible to other graph related operations.

Benkhalti, Abdellah. "Mapping the Desertification Process in Southern Morocco Using Remote Sensing Data." TopSCHOLAR®, 1987. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2149.

Full text
Abstract:
Desertification is a problem occurring in arid and semiarid zones all over the world. It is a consequence of mismanagement of the land. Human activities and livestock pressure on such fragile ecosystems lead to a deterioration of the soil by increasing its salinity, lessening its moisture, and covering it with sand and dust. Aerial photographs and satellite images constitute a tool for mapping and monitoring the desertification process. Multispectral data can assist in detecting the indicators of desertification in early stages in order to plan adequate action. The improvement of the resolution of satellite images and the fact that they are available on a periodic basis make the use of these data suitable for mapping the evolution of desert patches at large scales. The green band of Landsat MSS is used in this study. Two images taken, respectively, in 1976 and 1985 and covering the province of Ouarzazate in southern Morocco are used to map the desertification process and its evolution in the region. At the scale used and given the ground resolution of the MSS (80 meters), significant changes were found between the two images. However, changes occurring at scale smaller than 80 meter square were impossible to detect by visual interpretation of this band.

Abstract:
The importance of building a robust oil and gas company is currently more relevant than ever. Volatile oil prices, challenging governmental relations and uncertain outcomes of exploration activities are all elements affecting operating companies in the global oil and gas industry. Another important element is the cost of upstream services, which has increased dramatically since the beginning of the new millennium. There are no reason to believe that future challenges will be any easier to overcome. Simultaneously, the global community is in need of more energy to meet the predicted increase in demand. It is therefore important for operating companies to focus on increased recovery and secure safe and effective operations. By emphasizing quality in the well delivery process (WDP) operating companies can reduce time spent on planning wells, accelerate pro- ject development and increase focus on safety. A high quality WDP can secure proper technology assessment, process ownership, staff accountability, improve allocation of key resources and secure continuos improvement. With a properly functioning WDP future well projects can be delivered in an improved manner, thus helping operating companies build a robust organization able to meet an uncertain future. This study has analyzed the WDP of an operating company located in the Middle East with emphasis on revealing existing challenges. The findings have been compared to a base case WDP of an operating company located on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Based on analysis and lessons learned from the NCS improvements have been suggested. The WDP defines the set of activities in place to plan, execute and deliver a well. The process is important as it secure the presence of several critical elements during well planning and drilling operations. It must be able to secure participation of experienced employees, cooperation between important departments, use of technical solutions and documentation of lessons learned. The difference between a well functioning and poorly functioning WDP can be severe. A poor process will reduce HSE focus, fail to secure use of new drilling technology, increase costs and lead to an inecient allocation of resources. Several challenges reducing the quality of the WDP of the OME were revealed during the analysis. A high number of change orders combined with a lack of processes to deal with change reduce the quality of the WDP significantly. Other important challenges discovered include lacking interdisciplinary communication, insucient focus on conti- nuos improvement and absence of process ownership among employees in the drilling and well department. In addition, a lack of formal decision points to support the WDP was revealed. The study also found similar challenges between the WDP’s of the two companies. It was revealed that both operating companies use deviating targets and performance indicators that compromise cooperation. Companies also experience difficulties in com- municating lessons learned, challenges with an insucient supply of drilling rigs and a scarcity of qualified personnel. This reduceS quality of the WDP and increase risk. A greater number of challenges in the WDP were discovered for the operating company in the Middle East. As oppose to the operating company on the NCS, the operator in the Middle East has little or no focus on implementing lessons learned and lack process ownership among employees. The OME also lack a dynamic planning regime and has an insucient focus on HSE. Several opportunities for improving the WDP of the operator in the Middle East were discovered during the study. Suggested improvements include establishment of cooperation forums to enhance flow of information and increase collaboration between the field development and drilling and well department. It is also suggested to implement rigid processes and revise the use of targets and performance indicators. KPI’s that favor cooperation across departments should also be established. Based on lessons learned from the NCS it is suggested to implement decision gates to support existing processes. It is also recommended to establish post activities and implement dedicated change management process steps. This will support lessons learned and increase the focus on managing risk and uncertainty in the WDP. The suggested improvements will increase the quality of the WDP. They will help secure process ownership and staff accountability, reduce time spent on planning the well and accelerate project development, increase safety aspects, improve allocation of key resources and secure continuos improvement. The study also analyzed future opportunities and challenges in the two regions using a PESTEL-analysis. Future opportunities in the Middle East include elevated political influence as an increasing part of remaining global oil and gas resources will be located in the region. Future challenges include an increase in resource complexity, volatility in the political environment and diculties in attracting the necessary expertise and technology. Common opportunities for the two regions include future predictions of high oil prices, technological progress making previous unavailable resources available, improved carbon capture and storage (CCS) methods to mitigate the environmental impact of the industry and opportunities as a result of an increased focus of the importance of providing energy to the global community. Common challenges include the chance of oil and gas becoming redundant and a strong dependency on prices of hydrocarbons. This makes regions vulnerable for a decline in oil and gas prices. Suggested future work includes analysis of the WDP in an increased number of operating companies to confirm or invalidate the presented findings. It would also be interesting to investigate the use of incentives and performance indicators and analyze their effect the WDP. Studies investigating methods to improve eciency in drilling and well operations are also interesting. It is also suggested to compare average recovery rates in oil and gas regions and investigate reasons for any existing differences.

Chandesa, Tissa. "Visual tracking : detecting and mapping occlusion and camouflage using process-behaviour charts." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13444/.

Full text
Abstract:
Visual tracking aims to identify a target object in each frame of an image sequence. It presents an important scientific problem since the human visual system is capable of tracking moving objects in a wide variety of situations. Artificial visual tracking systems also find practical application in areas such as visual surveillance, robotics, biomedical image analysis, medicine and the media. However, automatic visual tracking algorithms suffer from two common problems: occlusion and camouflage. Occlusion arises when another object, usually with different features, comes between the camera and the target. Camouflage occurs when an object with similar features lies behind the target and makes the target invisible from the camera’s point of view. Either of these disruptive events can cause a tracker to lose its target and fail. This thesis focuses on the detection of occlusion and camouflage in a particle-filter based tracking algorithm. Particle filters are commonly used in tracking. Each particle represents a single hypothesis as to the target’s state, with some probability of being correct. The collection of particles tracking a target in each frame of an image sequence is called a particle set. The configuration of that particle set provides vital information about the state of the tracker. The work detailed in this thesis presents three innovative approaches to detecting occlusion and/or camouflage during tracking by evaluating the fluctuating behaviours of the particle set and detecting anomalies using a graphical statistical tool called a process-behaviour chart. The information produced by the process-behaviour chart is then used to map out the boundary of the interfering object, providing valuable information about the viewed environment. A method based on the medial axis of a novel representation of particle distribution termed the Particle History Image was found to perform best over a set of real and artificial test sequences, detecting 90% of occlusion and 100% of camouflage events. Key advantages of the method over previous work in the area are: (1) it is less sensitive to false data and less likely to fire prematurely; (2) it provides a better representation of particle set behaviour by aggregating particles over a longer time period and (3) the use of a training set to parameterise the process-behaviour charts means that comparisons are being made between measurements that are both made over extended time periods, improving reliability.

Abstract:
The mining industry is an old industry with established traditions and ways of working. Even though digitalisation has been well established in many other industries, has the mining industry just started adopting it. Digitalisation has impacted the types of products created and creating complex products that consist of electronic components and software that collect and share data. These products influence the development and create a complex development process when combined. However, the digital and the physical development processes need to be considered the limiting factors of the other.  This thesis is exploring the field of digital-physical development through mapping the development at a small case company in the lead of the digital transformation of the industry. The map sets the foundation to examine how agile practices are adopted at the case company in the purpose of exploring the effects on the complex development. This is a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews as primary data, and literature within the research field of product development, process theory and agile adoption as a theoretical framework.  The resulting process map can be found in Chapter 4.2 The Development Process. The map is visualising the dependencies between the different functions by describing activities, input, output, information, and resources of each function. The maturity of the processes found was low due to the ad hoc nature of the development. The structure and artefacts are considered to be agile practices that affect the studied process the most. The size of the organisation, the individual drive and minimal documentation allows fast communication and problem solving between the functions. This was a study of a small company with a low maturity level in their development process, which made it difficult to make any assumption about the efficiency of their process. Since this is a single case study in a growing research field, can a generalisation not be considered. Though, the results of this study can be found valuable for the case company for developing their processes and general practices.

Abstract:
Knowledge and its acquisition are seen to be an increasingly important aspect of business management. Universities, through initiatives such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP), are influential in the effective co-production and transfer of business management knowledge, however the mechanisms of knowledge acquisition within KTPs have been under researched. This thesis explores the acquisition of knowledge in three KTPs where process mapping was used in order to deliver business process improvements. It utilises Activity Theory as its research framework, adopting a Participatory Action Research approach with multi-site triangulation and employing cyclic data capture and analysis. Data is captured using semi-structured interviews and instantaneously sampled field notes. The research identifies the organisational community in which the KTP is conducted to be the most significant source of tensions or disturbances that impinge upon the work that is being undertaken. It makes a contribution to knowledge by classifying a source of tensions or disturbances that are not currently identified by Activity Theory and proffers an extension to the framework to include the ‘Tacit Skills’ of the individual undertaking an activity. It also identifies issues of governance, such as the stewardship of public funds that pervade KTPs and threaten to undermine the stated aims of the KTP initiative. Furthermore it highlights the complexities of KTPs and emphasises the need to support the psychological, emotional and training needs of those that are involved in their execution.

Abstract:

This Master thesis sets its goals in researching and understanding the structure of different educational systems. The main goal that this paper inflicts is to develop a middleware aiming at translating courses between different educational systems.

The procedure is to find the meaning of objects and courses from the different educational systems point of view, this is mainly done through processes such as identifying the context, semantics and state of the objects involved, perhaps in different activities. The middleware could be applied, with small changes, to any structured system of education.

This thesis introduces a framework for using ontologies in the translation and integration of course aspects in different processes. It suggests using ontologies when adopting and structuring different educational systems on an international level. This thesis will, through an understanding of ontologies construct a middleware for the translation process between different courses in the different educational systems. As an example courses in Sweden, Germany and Tajikistan have been used for the mapping and constructing learning goals and qualifications.

Abstract:
BillerudKorsnäs is a manufacturer of fiber-based cartonboard and liquid packaging board. Microbial growth occurs at several steps in cartonboard production due to favourable environment and the good access to nutrients from the raw material, and additives such as starch. Vegetative bacteria are usually not harmful in the production and die in the hot drying end of the cartonboard machine. The most abundant microflora at paper- and cartonboard factories consists largely of sporeforming microorganisms from the genera Bacillus and Paenibacillus. The endospores are highly resistant and can stay in the final end product, which is undesirable. Levels of endospores from these species at BillerudKorsnäs production unit KM5 are usually low, but an occational increase can be seen when a new cartonboard product, KW1 is produced. Today, the method used for controlling the microbiology is by adding biocides to broke towers. This has shown to be both expensive and non-effective at KM5. A new method is needed for controlling the microbiology at KM5 that is more effective, costbeneficial and environmental friendly. The aim of this project was to test a hypothesis for spore formation at a paper board factory in lab-scale experiments. A suggestion of a technical change in the process would be made that could minimize spore formation and the use of biocides at KM5. A model organism Bacillus licheniformis (E-022052) was used to study effects of environmental conditions on spore formation. Experiments were also performed in controlled bioreactor trials, where methods to minimize spore formation were tested. The experiments showed that nutrient deficiency of a primary carbon source was the major reason for spore formation and should be avoided at KM5. Further, the experiments showed that oxygen limitation significantly decreases the endospore formation. The conclusion reached, was that spore formation could be minimized by a feed addition of glucose to Broke tower 1 during the few days production of KW1. A second alternative includes using a feed of concentrated pulp that could be used to minimize spore formation without the use of biocides and without the need for rebuilding of the mill.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to understand, define and map the weave-room performance decision-making process, and to develop an Information Engineering methodology for studying and analyzing decision-making processes in textile manufacturing departments. A preliminary Decision Cycle Model was developed using knowledge management principles, resulting in a definition of Information Engineering, which was ?a technique for extracting the meaning contained in the information so as to allow the understanding needed by the user to make an informed decision?. A case study approach, in conjunction with a process-modeling tool called IDEF0, belonging to the IDEF (Integrated Definition language) family of modeling techniques, has been used. Case studies were conducted at three weaving plants, resulting in the development of the three AS-IS models. These case studies provided the framework to compare with, and become the underlying basis for, the proposed Best Practices TO-BE model of the weave-room performance decision-making process. Additionally, both the AS-IS and TO-BE models lead to the development of ten key performance-improving tasks that could potentially assist in enhancing the decision process as well as providing the background for analyzing the usability of IDEF0 as an effective process-mapping tool, by means of a SWOT analysis. Finally, a generic Information Engineering methodology was developed that could be used for mapping manufacturing-related decisions. The research deliverables resulting from the Information Engineering methodology would eventually lead to the development and creation of a kind of Digital Decision Dashboard (D3), which could potentially prove to be a valuable tool for decision-making in textiles, thus addressing a critical need presently facing the textile industry.
