This paper aims to analyze the relationship between listening techniques and technologies and forms of subjectivation in our current auditory culture compared to mid-20th century practices. Applying a media archaeological approach in order to unearth underlying histories of knowledge of the discussed technologies and practices offers a way of understanding how subjectivations and the constitution of environments in the context of large power regimes are intertwined. Against the theoretical backdrop of Gilles Deleuze’s text on “societies of control” and Erich Hörl’s notion of “Environmentalization”, the paper outlines conceptualizations of environments in different forms of sonic control that are inherent in practices and technologies of noise-cancelling headphones and specifi c Spotify playlists. The listening spaces that emerge in the analyzed practices/technologies reveal continuities as well as discontinuities when compared to their historical predecessors. Both the current phenomena are characterized by a process of advancing cybernetization and thus the formation of controllable environments. The depicted transformation corresponds to Deleuze’s observation of a new paradigm of power which he characterized as a shift from “molding” to “modulation”, i.e. a shift from a form-imposing to a self-regulating mode of power. Spotify’s concentration playlists and noisecancelling headphones both operate based on the principle of modulation and represent modes of environmental technologies. In the consideration of the subject-environment relationship on the other hand, current forms of subjectivation become apparent in cybernetic visions of control and environmental power. It is thus shown that listening spaces offer an approach to analyzing power and subjectivation.

This article highlights the impasses of anti-racist struggles that understand racism as an opinion or a prejudice and use education as their only means for addressing it. Racism should rather be understood as a socio-historical subjective structure rooted in the process of constitution of the division of labour on a global scale through colonialism, a process that was crucial to the institution of capitalism. This is why we will put forth the importance of rejecting the narrations that camouflage colonization with the idea of civilization, and the necessity to produce decolonial counter-histories. We will thus claim that such an endeavor should start from the struggles of racialized peoples against the different forms of coloniality—that is, from the refusal by racialized peoples of the representations that are imposed on them, and from their repositioning on the basis of their alterity. Only the position of a powerful alterity can in fact make possible a real equality.Cet article met en évidence les impasses des luttes antiracistes qui conçoivent le racisme comme une opinion ou un préjugé et utilisent l’éducation comme le seul moyen d’y remédier. Le racisme devrait plutôt être compris comme une structure socio-historique subjective qui s’enracine dans le procès de constitution de la division mondiale du travail par le colonialisme, un procès qui a été décisif pour l’institution du capitalisme. C’est pourquoi nous mettrons en avant le caractère problématique des récits qui recouvrent la colonisation de l’idée de civilisation et la nécessité de produire des contre-histoires décoloniales. Il s’agira alors de montrer que, pour ce faire, il faut partir des luttes des racisés contre les différentes formes de colonialité—c’est-à-dire du refus par les racisés des représentations qui leur sont adressées et de leur repositionnement à partir de leur altérité. Seule la position d’une altérité puissante peut, en effet, rendre possible une égalité réelle.

The model of capitalist subjectivation determines the generalization of competition as a norm of conduct, intimate individuals to conceive of themselves and behave like a company, order social relations according to the market model and change the logic of public policies. The present essay aims to understand, from the theoretical reference of P. Dardot C. Laval (2016a, 2016b, 2010), F. Guattari (1985, 1996), G. Alves (2008, 2011), D. Mancebo (2007, 2003), among others, how the subjectivity of the teaching worker of higher education is constituted, in the face of the current hegemonic expansion process of toyotista / neoliberal rationality, and how this process of capitalist subjectivation has interfered with working conditions and the mode / life project of education professionals. It is an exploratory study regarding the objectives and bibliographical information about the procedures of hermeneutic-analytical character. Initially, the essay deals with the transformations in the political-economic, cultural and productive structure inherent to the expansion of flexible capitalism, which underpinned the construction of a new model of "governance" and the formation of a new (self-governing) productive subject. Then, it presents the mechanisms and movements used by the toyotista / neoliberal rationality in the formation of a productivist and competitive subjectivity and its implications on the rhythms and working conditions. Finally, it intents to understand the metamorphoses of the teaching work, including the phenomenon related to the intensification and precarization of its working conditions, due to the process of capitalist subjectivation.

Abstract The author explores the socialist emancipation of women in Montenegro during World War II and its aftermath, using the example of the 8 March celebrations. The social life of this ‘holiday of the struggle of all the women in the world’ speaks powerfully of the strength and fortitude involved in the mobilization of women during the war and during the postwar building of socialist Yugoslavia, as well as the sudden modernization and unprecedented political subjectivation of women. The emancipatory potential of these processes turned out to be limited in the later period of stabilization of Yugoslav state socialism and largely forgotten in the postsocialist period. The author argues that the political subjectivation of women needs to be thought anew, as a process that does not take place in a vacuum or outside of a certain ideological matrix, whether socialist or liberal.

Seamus Heaney’s “Station Island” occupies an important place in Heaney’s work as it is an allegory of self-creation and subjectivation. It introduces a subject whose attempts at discovering and creating the self and identity are challenged by the socio-political atmosphere of Northern Ireland. This study sheds a new light on the process of aesthetic subjectivation, tracing the development of the subject’s personal and artistic abilities. Informed by different views about the art of self-creation, from philosophy, asceticism and art, including the ideas of Foucault and Deleuze, it traces the archaeology of personal and collective identities in this poem. The subject advances through a constant “curved” movement in order to unfold and reveal the fragments of his self. This movement is part of a strategy to circumvent social obstacles as he confronts a hostile space, the Other. Moreover, it positions him in various points of view, the sites that help him reveal the fragments of his self, once put together, constitute a complex mosaic representing a new and strong identity.

Abstract The definition of the self is a complex process which unfolds in everyday life though the use of objects and the performance of practices. Among others, food and culinary objects and practices contribute to the material foundation of subjectivation. Starting from De Certeau’s analysis of everyday life (1984) and adopting Warnier’s praxeological approach to subjectivation, our article aims at studying how two Moroccan women living in Milan’s suburbs make themselves through the materiality of food and related practices in a migration context. They move in peculiar ways among the constraints imposed both by the new local context and the country of origin food cultures. Through everyday food practices, women define a proper Moroccan “style” (Gell, 1998) made of diverse life stories as well as of an embodied collective memory anchored to materiality; they witness of different manners of being Moroccan, and of being it abroad.

The treatment includes several different steps in the process of the admittance and release of patients and the subjectivation involved in the process is considered very important. A clinical vignette is presented at the end of the article.

The new advent of digital, recurrently called by some authors as Web 2.0, Web 3.0 and Internet of Things, less than a mere technological change, con-sists of a new communicational paradigm. Mobile technologies, such as smartphones, have gained increasing prominence as means and tools of communication and mediators of interaction, in such a context. In this work, we intend to discuss mobile technology, especially smartphones, as media-tors of social practices and modes of subjectivity today. For the analysis, the notion of remediation by the Spanish sociologist Amparo Lasén was used, which, in a general scope, concerns the reconfiguration of mediations on the self-practices due to the adoption of new technologies as mediators of social practices. Among the results, the subjectivity process mediated by mobile technologies can be divided into two axes of analysis: one referring to identi-fication, knowledge sharing and self-awareness, and the other to control and dependence. The use of this type of digital mobile technology, such as smartphones, does not consist merely of just 'one more' media technology, which would minimally influence the processes of constituting subjectivities, on the contrary, it relates to an effective device for intermediating self and social-practices.

Para lograr êxito nesse processo hermenêutico e investigativo, será utilizado como procedimento metodológico a revisão de literatura, embasada nos seguintes autores: Lemos (2007a, 2007b, 2008, 2009), Rivière (2006) e Tuan (2003). A intenção é de não só discutir as implicações entre mobilidade versus comunicação de massa, o processo de configuração e a reconfiguração do território informacional, mas também empoderar o coenunciador a tornar-se um “bricoleur” da transmodernidade, com o intuito de discutir o conceito de identidade na contemporaneidade e, assim, ressignificar o seu olhar no momento em que participa, colabora no processo de construção de novas maneiras de estabelecer vínculos e laços de pertencimento.

 ABSTRACT:
 The unplugged cities, in the age of Supermodernity, lead us to discuss the term informational mobility in this article, aiming at denaturalizing it and bringing up underlying adversities to this new manner of subjectivation, individuation and mobility. In order to succeed in this hermeneutic and investigative process, the literature review will be used as methodological procedure, based on the following authors: Lemos (2007a, 2007b, 2008, 2009), Rivière (2006) and Tuan (2003). The intention is not only to discuss the implications between mobility and mass communication, the configuration process and informational territory’s reconfiguration, but also to empower the co-enunciator to become a “bricoleur” of the transmodernity, make possible to discuss the concept of identity in the contemporary society and, thus, to resignify his look at the time he is part of, collaborating in the building process of new ways of establishing links and the belonging feeling.

This article addresses some fundamental affinities between theatre and teaching and is based on emerging work in a long-term experiment which we began in the conference ‘Weber/Simmel Antagonisms: Staged Dialogues’, held at the University of Edinburgh on December 2015. Aimed at exploring the possibilities of the theatrical and dialogical forms for teaching the classics of social and cultural theory, it is a risky experiment whose initial results are presented in this special issue. In order to introduce the dialogues and situate them in the context of the broader project, the article does three things: first, it expounds the process of subjectivation at work in both theatre and teaching and explores some of the modalities of the subjective shift sought for in the public and students. Second, it explains the specificity of this experiment by contrasting it with other uses of theatrical dialogue in teaching. Finally, before briefly introducing each of the dialogues, the article clarifies the fundamental difference between the dialogical form and debate, as radically separating them is at the heart of any experiment in subjectivation, away from the stirring of opinions.

The present paper intends to closely explore the process of identity formation in the characters of Jeanette Winterson’s novel Gut Symmetries in light of Catherine Malabou’s notions of plasticity, destructive plasticity or trauma, and trans-subjectivation. Identity as an inconsistent procedure of becoming would be intensely explicated in Gut Symmetries through the viewpoint of the characters, in particular Alice. Identity as a mere space or crack, which constantly provides the opportunity for the subject to observe himself/herself, could be introduced as Catherine Malabou’s notion of plasticity of the subjectivity or trans-subjectivation in the novel. The juxtaposition of the pliability of quantum physics and trans-subjectivity in the novel would be highlighted to emphasize that presence, time, identity, and even being could be nothing other than plasticity or ever-fluctuating matter and non-matter. Plasticity as the absolute nucleus of existence, identity, and love would be manifested as perceptible in the form of trans-subjectivity. Sadism as a form of destructive plasticity would be spotlighted as the death drive in the novel and it corroborates the plasticity of love, which could betransformed into hate. Spotlighting femininity as essenceless, Alice and Stella would be represented as the instances of femininity that is mutable and erratic.

Descrevo, antes, a convergência entre as proposições psicanalíticas e a tradicional memória do passado, que consiste na reprodução passiva do que foi objetivamente percebido. Finalmente, acompanho os enunciados freudianos sobre o primado do afeto, onde a memória do imemorável abre as portas do futuro à subjetividade. Conservando seus efeitos na estruturação simbólica, a compreensão da memória do futuro libera uma descrição mais singularizada do processo de subjetivação em psicanálise.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Memória.  ABSTRACT In this article, on the one hand, I follow the movement of Freudian theory in order to understand its association with the thought of the memory of the present, significant organization based on the differences among mnemonic traces. Before that, I indicate the psychoanalytical propositions that merge with the traditional memory of the past, passive model that consists of the reproduction of what was objectively perceived in the past. Finally, I follow Freudian arguments about the primal importance of the affect (force, drive), based on the argument that the memory of the immemorial times opens the doors of the future to subjectivity. Keeping its effects in the subjective symbolic organization, the understanding of the memory of the future frees a more singular description of the process of “subjectivation” in psychoanalysis.KEYWORDS: Memory. AbstractIn this paper we analyze the contemporary uses of three equivalent adverbs in French and Spanish (sérieusement, seriamente and en serio) in order to characterize them by some salient linguistic properties. We will also establish the emergence of these uses in the history of the French and Spanish languages and try to determine the historical links between them. To achieve these goals we have created a personal corpus with more than 200 occurrences of each adverb from very diverse types of texts (novels, journals, Internet, oral, data bases such as Frantext, Corpus Le Monde Diplomatique, Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual and Corpus Diacrónico del Español, etc.). Our main hypothesis is that those three adverbs are the result of a similar complex process of grammaticalization.

Based on a sociohistorical description of the emergence of animal assisted care practices, this research note explores the link between professional dynamics and the recent evolution of human-animal relationships. A joint process of professionalization and subjectivation is observed: the more these practices are defined as “therapy,” involving healthcare professionals, the more animals are seen as singular beings, even persons. It is argued that looking at human-animal relationships can bring to light the ontological dimensions of professional dynamics, and, symmetrically, that looking at professions can be relevant to understand the evolution of human-animal relationships, and contribute to reflections on animal work.

In this article, I explore the ways in which friendship contributes to shaping the boundaries of men's and women's sexual experiences. Using inputs from the sociology of experience and the sociology of friendship, I explore qualitative data from a research about sexuality in Portugal, in which I collected sexual biographies of 35 men and women, aged 30-55. In the in-depth interviews, these adult participants, possessing secondary and tertiary education, and living in urban areas, reflected retrospectively about their sexual biography, including their childhood and youth. The main thesis is that the practices of friendship (which structure those relationships as social facts) also help to structure sexual practices and representations and, through them, to construct the contemporary sexual self. Those practices may be discursive (‘talking’ and ‘chatting’), or rather oriented to action (‘doing things together’). In this article, I focus on discursive friendship practices, and how they contribute to shaping contemporary sexual experience. Drawing on F. Dubet's sociology of experience, I argue that this relationship is defined in the tension along three dimensions: integration, strategy and subjectivation. This process is cross-cut by gender, as discursive friendship practices interact differently with the dimensions of sexual experience, in that strategy mainly reinforces definitions and enactment of hegemonic forms of masculinity, while subjectivation helps to challenge them and to build plural gender experiences (both feminine and masculine).

The development of skill requirements and VET constitutes a central field of hegemonic struggles under Postfordism. This development is linked to far reaching economic changes and transformations in the labour process, which lead in part to a replacement of taylorist tendencies of deskilling and strict bureaucratic control of labour through a partial reintegration of planning and execution and an alleged rehabilitation of skilled work. The postfordist understanding of skill conceptualizes the capabilities of workers as human capital which constitutes endogenous growth factors. This understanding is accompanied by an expansion, dynarnisation and subjectivation of the socially dominant concept of skills, which leads to new forms of subordination of workers under capital.

This essay problematizes the resistance processes present in art school curricula. Some curricula are legitimized by the constant emphasis on sequentiality and chronological succession grounded in the history of art, which often comes only from a scholarly conception centered on the work and life of consecrated artists over the centuries, or rereading of works of art. Besides that most of the school curricula are guided by textbooks that legitimize the continuity of these practices, privileging elitist, ideological, sequential aspects that may exclude other artistic manifestations. There is an imposition of good or bad art. There are several discourses in Art that can produce operations and subjectivations of bodies in and out of school, demanding new ways for subjects to be in and out of the classroom in order to produce resistance in curricula and school spaces as a whole. This essay calls these processes urgencies. It is understood that these urgencies are in conflict and have the power to create reliefs with what is legitimized by the school system as a curriculum in Art. In this process, there is a flow of forces between what is put, the status quo and the urgencies, implying lifestyles, aesthetic choices and the construction of discourses, people, bodies, as well as attitudes, actions and ways of walking, speak and behave, that is, ways of managing life that operate in the processes of subjectivation. This essay deals with the resistance that permeates the art curriculum at school, in view of the curricular conceptions already legitimized by the system.

The crisis does not seem to have reached the consciousness of subjects. However, the alleged immunity of subjectivities against it does not result from affirmative internalisation of ‘entrepreneurial’ interpellations, but from the mobilisation of ‘wayward’, non-market compliant practices and dispositions. Rather than as a linear, subsuming process of “subjectivation”, this is to be interpreted as the subjective dimension of capitalist accumulation by dispossession. As our empirical data illustrates, the crisis is indeed present as a permanent state in the daily lives of many people. While there is a widespread critical consciousness of the crisis and of capitalism in general, it fails to result in collective action due to the lack of a political frame of reference that action could relate to.

This article adds to contemporary studies of neoliberalism by offering an empirical investigation of the production of subjectivity in the context of coworking spaces’ sociality. Coworking spaces are exemplary milieux in which to explore the organisation and significance of work. Drawing on the life history of a creative worker and member of a leading coworking space, I unveil the ethical labour that is required to access coworking’s sociality. Using a Foucauldian framework, I conceptualise this process as a process of subjectivation and concentrate on its ambivalent character, signalling the inherent intertwinement of self-commodification and self-improvement. This article contributes to the scholarly debates on the organisation and significance of work in two key ways. First, it expands our understanding of how the production of subjectivity is experienced at the level of the self. Second, it argues that coworking spaces function as apparatuses for the production of subjectivities in neoliberal culture industries.

The publication reveals and experimentally confirms key opportunities of using a case method for developing reflection, which include: organization of personal experience awareness and learning new subject identifications, identities, and positions. It is shown that the process of developing reflection is unfolding through the organization of decentration, reconstruction, subjectivation, objectification and approbation of new experience. Two versions of reflection development (toward self-development (reflection of the reflection) and toward system informa tion processing) received experimental confirmation. It was determined that due to organized work with the case, a reflection tendency toward distortions, characteristic of youthful age, was significantly changed toward the subject's true representation of his reflection. The diagnostic, developmental and control characteristics of the matrix reflexive form, which represents the modal-intentional model of reflection, were indicated.

Suite à ces considérations, la seconde partie de l’article cherche à démontrer que la théorie de l’agir de Ricœur peut favoriser le passage d’une reconnaissance de type objectale à une reconnaissance des capacités du sujet à se tenir pour responsable. Ce passage sera opéré directement sur le modèle d’analyse du “dernier Foucault,” c’est-à-dire son concept-clé de “processus de subjectivation.” In his later work, Michel Foucault manifested a strong interest for the “hermeneutics of the subject.” Yet this history of the constitution of the subject (or subjectivity) does without any reflection on the role of understanding, even though Foucault characterizes his project as a historical ontology of ourselves. The power of mediation emphasized in the work of Paul Ricœur may help us redefine an ontology of understanding through a hermeneutics of the self. Following this, the second part of the article aims to show that Ricœur’s theory of action can facilitate a transition from the recognition of the self, first described as “objectivation,” to a recognition of the subject’s capacity to be held responsible. This passage will draw on the model of analysis in the later Foucault, specifically, on his key concept of the subjectivation process.

Nona Fernández's work has been catalogued within what is known as the "generation of the children" to refer to those narrations by authors who were children during the Chilean dictatorship. The work of the Chilean writer Nona Fernández will be analyzed to understand how the writing process, its relationship with the event and the processes of subjectivation of the characters, from a narrative perspective towards the autobiographical and autofictional genres, have been crossed by fiction to question the constructed certainties and the failures of memory. We will focus mainly on two works which have a thread of narratological and historical continuity, such as Space Invader (2013) and La dimensión desconocida (2016). Both works are related by the terrible events that happened during the Chilean dictatorship. Everything narrated in a cyclical time, like an unknown dimension, living in the present the horrors that we thought were past.

This article focuses on how the violation of female bodies in the case of mass harassment of women is rendered intelligible by the Western media and the refugees. Violation of female bodies is approached as a site for politicizing possibilities of becoming a subject in the Western media. Informed by Deleuzian notion of “becoming” and the subjectivation of the refugees, I argue that the understanding of “violation” is a central component in contributing to possibilities of becoming affirmed as a subject in the Western media. Empirical material subjected to critical text analysis includes a key text form the Finnish daily newspaper <em>Helsingin Sanomat </em>and refugee interviews. The analysis suggests that the repression of irreducible conceptions of “violation,” and the subsequent erasure of the uncertainty of a “self” in the process of becoming, yields to offering possibilities of becoming primarily in Western terms and the affirmation of Western ideological certainty in understanding mass harassment of European women by the refugees.

In debates concerning recent developments in the sphere of work, Taylorized and subjectivated forms of work (where workers coordinate tasks on their own, and indirect forms of control are employed) are considered to oppose each other. There almost seems to be a consensus that Taylorized and subjectivated forms of control belong to two distinct domains of the sphere of work: Manufacturing work involving little skill on the one hand, highly skilled and service work on the other. This article argues that the subjectivation process of work also takes place in low-skill jobs. Particularly in work environments structured by information technologies, both ideal types of work organization become intertwined and constitute a distinct mode of work organization: subjectivated Taylorization. A prominent example is call center work. On the basis of own empirical case studies, both management strategies of subjectivated Taylorization and reactions on the workers' side are analyzed. The paper concludes with a reflection on general changes the logic of control, and domination of workers.

Its regime is studied through its social imaginary and its totalitarian character: the discourse of advertising, as a global hegemon, absorbs all forms of discourse and signification, thereby actualizing capitalism's telos - the colonization of the Lebenswelt under a great imperative: everything must become a commodity, especially the subject. A process of totalization of subjectivity occurs under a commodification logic centered on the representation: every image must be transformed into commodity-signs. Thus the consumption imaginary appears as a totalizing ideology, functioning as archaic représentations collectives (Durkheim) and simulating a religious imaginary. It mass-produces subjectivity through participation mystique (Lévy-Bruhl) with its commodity-signs (and their fetish) and the whole imaginary. Its subject is defined as a bricolage of consumable commodity-signs, being therefore eternally fluid, performative, and ethereal. Thus it produces an anthropological mutation, the commodity-subject: a disposable, empty, thoroughly commodified self.

AbstractThe changes that have taken place in religious and ecclesiastical life in Western Europe are characterised as a process of secularisation. Secularisation encompasses three different processes, namely a decline in the religiosity of people, the restriction of the range of influence of religion and the adaptation of religion to the values of society. By means of these processes on three levels the developments with relation to religious life in its entirety can be described. Since changes in religious life are connected with changes in society and the culture of the society in which that religion functions, a better understanding of what secularisation entails demands that we look at those developments in society which have promoted changes in religion and the church. Developments in society that are discussed include the changed organisation of society and processes of rationalisation, democratisation and subjectivation. Finally, it is shown how these developments resulted in the diminishing significance of religion and the churches in and for society.

This article examines the emergence of a ‘financial subject’ in the transformation of the UK economy since 1979, using a critical realist approach to subjectivity that investigates underlying causal mechanisms and structures as they affect daily life. Financial restructuring, including widespread borrowing and increasing personal investment, has forged links between finance markets and personal finance, as workers’ wages are financialized. This engenders entrepreneurial subjectivity, with individuals interpellated to be self-reliant in managing possible risks. It argues that the process of subjectivation, where individuals recognize themselves and their goals relative to financial markets, exemplifies the development of financialization itself, since it gives an insight into the successful reproduction of social relations of finance. It illustrates the instability related to wages and inequality, as some subjects have to contend with unpredictable employment prospects as potential future risks that complicate the practices of personal investment and borrowing, creating new hierarchies bound up with the financialization of the economy.

Within the workerist tradition the concept of general intellect theorised by Marx in the “Fragment on Machines” has framed a socio-political interpretation of Simondon capable of questioning the ongoing process of valorisation and subjectivation of living labour under capitalism. According to Virno (2003), Leonardi (2010) and Pasquinelli (2015), Simondon’s philosophy can provide the theoretical foundation for thinking new forms of political agency and cooperation. Their accounts rely on the concepts of transindividuality, individuation, and mecanology, in order to explore Post-Fordist concepts such as multitude, cognitive capitalism, and algorithmic governmentality. Through my reading of Simondon’s philosophy of technics, I will assess these interpretations and situate the issue of general intellect at the intersection of his notions of “technicity” and “information.” Hence, I aim to integrate workerist and post-workerist interpretations through the concepts of living information incorporated into machinery, and invention-power implied in the concept of technicity. This will eventually lead to the replacement of the Marxist opposition between living and dead labour by a conception of the machine as neither living nor dead.

Abstract What kind of functions does a theory carry out in the analyst’s mind at work? The author tries to describe, using a few analytic trailers, how Bion Field Theory (BFT) can become an oneiric psychoanalytic tool in the mind of the analyst working with inaccessible states of mind and the violence of nameless turbulences. The hypothesis expressed is that BFT, as described in the works of its principal authors (Ferro, Grotstein, Ogden et.c), seems to evoke a psych-O-analysis that chooses O as psychoanalytic vertex, developing the bionian idea of unconscious as psychoanalytic function of the mind. BFT introduces explains and illustrates an oneiric model of the mind and of the analytic cure. The priority given by this theory to the contact with emotional experience and the capacity to stay at one ment with the unknown emotional experience circulating in the hic et nunc, seems, in author’s analytical experience, to promote both the development of an authentic analytic Self and analytic ethic and a process of subjectivation in analyst, patient, analytic experience.

This article constructs a dialogue between Alain Badiou's philosophy of evental subjectivation and anthropology as an empirical social science. Elaborating on the few existing anthropological engagements with Badiou's theory by bringing in his more recent writing, it aims to familiarise anthropologists with some key dimensions of his approach and conceptual apparatus and to consider its use for anthropological theorisation of political struggle and process. Reflecting ethnographically on the (after)life of one happening in Bosnia and Herzegovina (the 2014 Winter Revolt) in light of another happening (the 1992–1995 war), I investigate the conditions under which happenings may or may not come to function—and be recognised—as events, as catalysts of change. Substantially departing from Badiou's normative-universalist approach, I nevertheless argue that a core dimension of his project—an effort to conceptualise subject formation processually in relation to events—can inspire interesting avenues for anthropological theorising. Particularly in addressing questions of perspective, intensity and duration, I contend that anthropologists are well-placed to trace modalities of what Badiou calls ‘fidelity' and its refusal.

This article examines the education reform enacted in the earlier half of the 1970s in Mexico, as a paradigmatic case of the effect of criticism and social movements on the formation of government programs. The historical process is reconstructed on the basis of the concept of regimes of governmentality, developed by Foucault (1991) and the so-called Anglo-Foucauldian scholars Burchel, Gordon and Miller (1991); Rose (1999); Dean (1999); and Rose, O’Malley and Valverdes (2006). The text discusses the formation and development of a mentality of government that reflects on the educational movements of 1968 and 1971 as expressions of the growing illegitimacy of the institutions of political control, school, family and political authority. In response to that burgeoning rejection, it became necessary to overhaul and refashion the intervening authorities, the purposes, media and institutions of biopolitical control. In particular, the educational reform of 1973 was an attempt to reshape the processes of subjectivation that had been being employed since the 1968 crisis, and to integrate controls over citizens’ daily lives into the powers of the State security apparatus.

This paper examines the essential yet ambivalent role of the law, i.e. of limits and prohibitions, within the subjective experience of desire. In order to investigate the dialectics between limit and desire, it firstly focuses on the perspective of George Bataille and his analysis of eroticism. Moreover, the contribution takes into account the perspective of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, who focus on the relationship of desire to capitalist society, in order to affirm a different revolutionary economy of desire, celebrating immediate libidinal transgressions against any limitations. On the contrary, the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan shows the absolute need of the law for the experience of desire and the process of subjectivation, since only through the Symbolic order the subject can join a sociolinguistic community. The final part of the contribution aims at enlightening possible correspondences among these perspectives, focusing on the Letters of the Apostle Paul and his profound understanding of the dialectics between law and desire. The Pauline Epistles offer a significant paradigm to understand the necessary but not sufficient role of the law in the experience of the Christian believer as well as of the subject as such.

ABSTRACTThe vast majority of the work done on educational inequalities have focused on the educational system called "traditional." In this context, little research has been done on the effects of "alternative" pedagogical experiences. This work proposes to study the case of an alternative school in Ecuador, analyzing how social inequalities are reproduced or limited within this school structure. We will show how these pedagogy can reduce the influence of the normative social categories through a process of subjectivation shared by their former students. On the other hand, we will analyze how an active school structure, focused on the respect of individual school rhythms, in the same way allows the reproduction of some social inequalities and gender stereotypes.RESUMENLa gran mayoría de los trabajos realizados sobre las desigualdades educativas se han centrado sobre el sistema educativo llamado “tradicional”. En este contexto, pocas investigaciones se han realizado sobre los efectos de las experiencias pedagógicas “alternativas”. Este trabajo se propone estudiar el caso de una escuela alternativa en Ecuador, analizando cómo se reproducen o se limitan las desigualdades sociales dentro de esta estructura escolar. Mostraremos así, cómo estas pedagogías pueden reducir la influencia de las categorías sociales normativas, a través de un proceso de subjetivación compartido por sus antiguos/as alumnos/as. O objetivo deste artigo é, de forma geral, discutir a noção de acontecimento enquanto uma das principais categorias para a leitura da obra de Michel Foucault, o que nos permite, a partir de uma determinada operacionalização, compreender todo seu projeto como uma acontecimentalização da história. A fim de especificar este processo, estabelecemos o diagnóstico foucaultiano da Insurreição Iraniana como mote de nossa verificação do acontecimento, em que atentaremos para dois aspectos que convergem no nexo principal do événement: o “poder pastoral” e a “espiritualidade política” conduzindo às novas proposições teóricas sobre a formação do sujeito. Será, assim, a partir do grande eixo da subjetivação que desenvolveremos nossa hipótese de leitura, referente à economia da obra foucaultiana, no que diz respeito ao acento espiritual do poder pastoral e o episódio iraniano como estando já inseridos em um movimento que deveria tentar pensar, continuamente, um sujeito outro. Desta forma, tais temáticas, abarcando a questão de um governo dos outros, carregarão igualmente a necessidade conceitual do governo de si, desenvolvida por Foucault através do “cuidado de si” durante a década de 1980. Para percorrermos este caminho, de uma acontecimentalização do levante no Irã, abordaremos primeiramente o poder pastoral e as contra-condutas no contexto do curso proferido no Collège de France em 1978, Sécurité, territoire, population. Em seguida enfocaremos a noção de “espiritualidade política”, utilizada em sua análise sobre o Irã, a partir de um cruzamento conceitual advindo de estudo pontual de L’Herméneutique du sujet, curso de 1982, a fim de poder explicitar, ao final, como a própria metodologia de uma filosofia do acontecimento procura atingir seu principal alvo, o sujeito, ao pensá-lo enquanto processo, através de um questionamento singular: “como se tornar sujeito sem ser assujeitado?”. Abstract: The aim of this essay is to discuss the notion of event as one of the main categories for reading the work of Michel Foucault. In terms of the way it operates, the event allows us to understand Foucault’s entire project as an eventalization of history. In order to specify this process, we establish Foucault’s diagnosis of the Iranian Insurrection as a verification of the event, in which we attend to two aspects that converge in the main nexus of événement: “pastoral power” and “political spirituality”. Both of these lead to new theoretical propositions on the formation of subject. It is thus from the large axis of subjectivation that we develop our reading hypothesis. With reference to the economy of Foucault’s work, the spiritual tone of pastoral power and the Iranian episode are already inserted in a movement that should attempt to think continuously of an other subject. Such themes, by dealing with the question of a government of others, also bear the conceptual need of the government of self, developed by Foucault through the “care of the self” during the 1980s. To cover the path of an eventalization of the Iranian uprising, we first consider pastoral power and counter-conducts in the framework of the course given at the Collège de France in 1978: Security, Territory, Population. Then we focus on the notion of “political spirituality”, using Foucault’s analysis of Iran, from the conceptual crossing that emerges from the study of the Hermeneutic of the subject course given in 1982. Finally, we seek to explicate how the specific methodology of a philosophy of event aims to reach its main target, the subject, by thinking it as a process by means of a singular question: “how to become a subject without being subjected?”. The paper addresses the problem of continuing education of teachers in early childhood education in contemporary times, asking how to elaborate formative pathways that do not focus exclusively on the models/standards of professionalization predetermined by academic production, and later adopted by government policies. It is organized from the investigative movement traced with the teachers who participate in the extension-research project UERJ-EDU-DEDI, coordinated by the author. It critically analyzes the main causes that justify the failure of the training projects established based on the aforementioned models of professionalization and points out conceptual possibilities to think more immanent formative processes, that is, produced from the experiences that unfold itself in the curricular movement, experiences in which teachers try to build more ethical educational relationships with childhood. It concludes that the formative movement needs to be configured as space-time for the expression and collective evaluation of the ethical-educational potentialities engendered in these experiences. The work is conceptually aligned with Gilles Deleuze's philosophy of difference, especially the reading he performs of Baruch Spinoza's "Ethics". It is methodologically guided by the monitoring the modes of subjectivation cartography traced by the teachers in the process of curriculum production for early childhood education, according to the theoretical guidance provided by Suely Rolnik and Felix Guattari.

In this paper, we argue that the normative concept of modernity as self-referentiality, self-subsistence, autonomy, endogeny and independence of reason is based on the correlation of anthropology and science in a double, however correlated, point: on the one hand, it is rooted on the idea of the natural world as a purely technical, physical, chemical and biological triad of structure, dynamics and object, which obeys to quantitative and definite-invariable material laws; on the other, it is grounded on the idea of human mind or human nature as a normative subject that is able to interpret in an objective way this purely technical nature and, more importantly, to construct the epistemological-moral-ontological objectivity from the modern self’s capability of creating its own axiology and rationalizing the epistemological-moral foundation and the anthropological-ontological place-belonging in the world and in society. As a consequence, the normative concept of modernity, associated to a technical view of nature and to a political-profane-historical notion of society-culture-consciousness, of socialization-subjectivation, enables the idea that modernity is a very singular anthropological-societal-cultural-cognitive process of evolution in human history, as its paradigmatic basis (reason between natural science and secular culture) represents directly universalism in itself, so as to construct a barrier and an opposition between modernity and the other of modernity, as well as to institute the process of modernity-modernization and its comprehension as a self-referential, self-subsisting, autonomous, closed and endogenous process, and as a principle of movement, dynamics and explanation. Here, modernity can be explained only by its internal processes, subjects, principles, values and multiple dynamics, as it signifies a self-constructive movement in itself and by itself, as an overcoming of traditionalism as a minority and a consolidation of modernity-modernization as a majority due to the intersection of reason, science and culture.
