How do elephants achieve their enormous vocal flexibility when communicating, imitating or creating idiosyncratic sounds? The mechanisms that underpin this trait combine motoric abilities with vocal learning processes. We demonstrate the unusual production techniques used by five African savanna elephants to create idiosyncratic sounds, which they learn to produce on cue by positive reinforcement training. The elephants generate these sounds by applying nasal tissue vibration via an ingressive airflow at the trunk tip, or by contracting defined superficial muscles at the trunk base. While the

Abstract:
TThe landscape of naval design is undergoing a transformative revolution through the strategic integration of artificial intelligence, fundamentally reshaping the design process whilst preserving the central role of human creativity. This research, conducted at the University of Genoa, introduces an innovative "Emotional-Enhanced Design" paradigm that leverages advanced AI technologies to amplify designers' natural capabilities rather than replace them. The proposed methodology represents a significant departure from traditional design approaches, introducing a four-phase process that fundamen

Since the advent of real-time computer music environments, composers have increasingly incorporated DSP analysis, synthesis, and processing algorithms in their creative practices. Those processes became part of interactive systems that use real-time computational tools in musical compositions that explore diverse techniques to generate, spatialize, and process instrumental/vocal sounds. Parallel to the development of these tools and the expansion of DSP methods, new techniques focused on sound/musical information extraction became part of the tools available for music composition. Emotional contagion, the process of unconsciously mirroring others’ emotions [6], occurs through various channels including facial expressions, vocal tone, and body language, influencing social interactions and responses to cultural stimuli like music and movies [3], [4], [1]. Facial expressions, analyzed using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), provide insights into emotional transmission [2]. Thermal imaging, a technique for measuring facial temperature changes, offers a noninvasive method to study emotional responses [5]. However, the facial thermal response to emotional contagion rema

Abstract:
Symphonies Reframed recreates symphonies as chamber music. The project aims to capture the features that are unique for chamber music, at the juncture between the “soloistic small” and the “orchestral large”. A new ensemble model, the “triharmonic ensemble” with 7-9 musicians, has been created to serve this purpose. By choosing this size range, we are looking to facilitate group interplay without the need of a conductor. We also want to facilitate a richness of sound colours by involving piano, strings and winds. The exact combination of instruments is chosen in accordance with the features of
