Full text
Abstract:

Shoji, Satoru, Remo Proietti Zaccaria, and Satoshi Kawata. Holographic laser processing for three-dimensional photonic lattices. Edited by A. V. Narlikar and Y. Y. Fu. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199533053.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
This article describes a holographic laser-processing method for independently controlling the lattice symmetry and lattice constant in three-dimensional photonic lattices. With this approach, optical periodicity is created in lower dimensions and three-dimensional periodicity is obtained by a combination of several lower-dimensional periodic structures. The proposed holographic laser-processing method is compared with the standard four-beam technique. Examples of experimental demonstration achieved in photosensitive polymers are given. The article also introduces a multiphoton direct-writing technique for creating defect structures in lattices towards production of defect cavity-functionalized photonic crystal devices. It shows that all Bravais lattices can be produced by choosing proper incident vectors of laser beams. The lattice constant of the structure can be changed without distorting its lattice symmetry and lattice elements.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the funding of the claims process. Topics covered include the costs of running the Claims Process; the roles, if any, that Secretariat staff and decision-makers play in establishing periodic budgets; the source(s) of funds to pay for the expenses of the Claims Process as a whole; and whether an outside auditor is employed to audit the claims process. An Editors’ Commentary and separate Annotations show how each of these Mass Claims Processes has handled the matter.

Maud, Gonne, Merrigan Klaartje, Meylaerts Reine, and van Gerwen Heleen, eds. Transfer Thinking in Translation Studies. Leuven University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.11116/9789461663726.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of transfer covers the most diverse phenomena of circulation, transformation and reinterpretation of cultural goods across space and time, and are among the driving forces in opening up the field of translation studies. Transfer processes cross linguistic and cultural boundaries and cannot be reduced to simple movements from a source to a target (culture or text). In a time of paradigm shifts, this book aims to explore the potential and interdisciplinary power of transfer as a concept and an analytical tool to account for complex cultural dynamics. The contributions in this book adopt various research angles (literary studies, imagology, translation studies, translator studies, periodical studies, postcolonialism) to study an array of entangled transfer processes that apply to different objects and aspects, ranging from literary texts, legal texts, news, images and identities to ideologies, power asymmetries, titles and heterolingualisms. By embracing a process-oriented way of thinking, all these contributions aim to open the ‘black box’ of transfer in the widest sense.

Abstract:
Pure mathematics provides principles, procedures, and ways of thinking that can be fruitful starting points for music composition, performance, and algorithmic generation. In this chapter, a number of mathematical methods are suggested as useful ways to define and transform underlying musical structures such as metres and scales, and to realize these structures as finished pieces of music. The mathematical methods include the discrete Fourier transform, geometry, algebraic word theory, and tiling, and the chapter explains how these relate to musical features such as periodicity (or lack of periodicity), well-formedness, microtonality, canons, rhythmic hierarchies, and polyrhythms. The chapter closes with a detailed examination of a musical piece derived from the described processes.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a new peer-review procedure that provides scrutiny of each UN member state’s human rights record every five years. The review process culminates in a set of recommendations issued to each “State-under-Review” (SuR). The UPR provides an unprecedented opportunity to routinely hold all states to account for their obligations under international human rights law, including health-related human rights. Health recommendations have featured prominently in the recommendations issued to SuRs and have a comparatively high implementation rate. Empirical data indicate that the UPR could have a potentially, or already, important role in holding states to account for health-related human rights as well as political global health commitments, such as those found in the Sustainable Development Goals. However, certain shortcomings should be addressed, including an uneven spread of recommendations across different health issues and limited engagement of the public health community.

Abstract:
How are human rights put into practice? What does it mean when governments announce that their foreign policy is concerned with promoting and protecting human rights? Where is the enforcement of these rights? ‘Human rights foreign policy and the role of the United Nations’ considers human rights in terms of foreign policy and international law and examines the UN’s Universal Periodic Review process and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It is only recently that governments have actively involved themselves in how another state treats its nationals, but enthusiasm for human rights in foreign policy ebbs and flows.
