Full textThe aging process is characterised by declines in physiological reserves inseveral organic systems, as well as in physical function. These declines are unavoidable, andreduce individuals’ ability to execute daily activities. Several factors interact to determine thedevelopment and progression of these declines. Physical activity and exercise seem toconstitute important tools for delaying the development and progression of physicaldeteriorations. However, certain aspects of the relationship between physical activity/exerciseand physical deterioration during aging are not well-established. The purpose of this workwere (1) to study the role played by physical activity and exercise on physiological andfunctional declines in persons 60 years-old or over, and (2) to investigate the aspects that determine adherence to exercise/physical activity in this population. Methods. To guide our research, we proposed a theoretical framework labelled « processusde dégénérescence physique ». This framework contitutes an extension of another theoreticalmodel, and it is adapted to older adult populations. Furthermore, our framework incorporatedthe concept of frailty. We used different and complementary research designs. A pilot study(n = 54) was developed to examine psychometric properties of certain assessment tools. Afterthat, we developed a postal survey (n = 1000, from which 535 replied to this research) with ayear follow-up (n = 535, from which 384 replied to this research) ; this survey and its followup allowed us to study cross-sectional and predictive relatioships between physicalactivity/exercise and the components of physical deteriorations

Full textThe objective of the project, which title is "Ageing in reaction-diffusion processes without detailed balance", is to arrive at a better understanding of the physical behaviour of strongly interacting many-body systems. In particular, such systems can exhibit a collective behaviour with new qualities which are not present at the microscopic level. It is in this context that we focus on the ageing. As an answer, we could argue that the second law of the thermodynamics might be sufficient to justify the ageing. However, that law alone does not suffice if one wishes to understand more deeply the underlying processes responsible of these ageing phenomena. For this motive, we consider exactly solvable systems in order to obtain precise analytical results on very simple models which later on could help to form a correct physical intuition. A common type of this kind of system is particle-reaction models with reaction-diffusion dynamics. More precisely, we have studied intrinsically irreversible systems, whose dynamics does not satisfy detailed balance and which relax towards non-equilibrium stationary states. Indeed, while for systems that obey the detailed balance relations, the fluctuation-dissipation relationship is well known, that is no longer the case for more general systems. This thesis focuses on two different models; the first one is the bosonic contact process (and also the bosonic pair-contact process) with a long range transport of particules ("Lévy flights") and the second one is the coagulation-diffusion process. In both models, characteristic two-time observables such as the two-time correlations and responses are found exactly and their exact scaling forms are extracted, especially the values of the non-equilibrium exponents characterising ageing are found. Our results suggest a novel generalisation of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio whose applicability is tested in a large set of models. Its physical interpretation remains an open question for future research

Full textMany bacteria have been shown to swarm, that is the cooperative rapid mass migration of cells over a surface. However, the mechanism underlying the control of this developmental process or the basis of coordinated behaviour that facilitates rapid migration, remains completely unclear. Therefore, in my studies, it was important to define precisely the conditions required for swarming in Bacillus subtilis, documenting each stage, both macroscopically and microscopically, by manual and time-lapse photography of the expanding community, in situ, without disturbing the cells. This has yielded many novel features of the swarming process, which in B. Subtilis is particularly remarkable and complex. On a synthetic medium, successive waves of swarming, followed by consolidation, were observed, forming highly intricate branching patterns of dendrites. Packs of closely associated bacteria, advancing cooperatively, were observed at the tips of dendrites. At least three types of cells were observed in the community, including ‘crystalline' arrays of closely packed rafts of cells, at the base of mature dendrites. Using a genetic approach I have demonstrated that surfactin produced in B. Subtilis, is essential for swarming on the synthetic B medium. I also demonstrated a surfactin independent pathway for swarming on a rich medium. Analysis of mutants defective in quorum sensing demonstrated that the surfactin independent pathway is likely dependent on signalling molecules. Finally, in studies concerning the physical properties of surfactin and its role in swarming, the results included the demonstration that pure surfactin when spreading forms ‘dendrites'

Full textMost processes in our daily life are far from equilibrium. The prime example is a cell and the transport occurring within. In this thesis intracellular transport is modeled by means of stochastic processes. For this, two different approaches are applied: the explicit mod- eling of active particles with internal degrees of freedom with characteristics as they were determined experimentally. And secondly, the collective effects occurring in many particle systems are studied in a phenomenological way by means of exclusion processes. In the explicit model one important result is given by the fact that force fluctuations are essential to capture the relevant motion characteristics. Further, the influence of the cellular environment creates counter-intuitive effects, like a possible inversion of the bias. The motion characteristics can be represented in a coarse-grained manner as an exclusion process for particles with internal states. Due to the resulting disorder in the hopping rates a density-dependent condensation occurs. In a second part, a two-lane exclusion model is studied. Two species in a tubular geometry inspired by filamentous fungi are considered. This can be seen as a minimal model exhibiting a phase transition from a low density phase to an intriguing phase with periodically changing particle densities

Full textThese works are based on the study of the structural behaviour of a heterogeneous reactive silica resulting from a natural siliceous aggregate (flint) submitted to a physico-chemical degradation process: the Alkali Silica Reaction. The impact of the reaction on the aggregate depends punctually of the degree of heterogeneousness of the structure; therefore, the appeal to the techniques of punctual analysis is then necessary. So, all the stages of the degradation of the silica on a grain of some microns were realized due to the use of the microbeam of the line LUCIA on SLS. The study of the behaviour of elements calcium and potassium in the structure of the aggregate was realized by EDX and consolidated by the analysis of the atomic environments of the silicon and cations by the interpretation of X-Ray absorption spectrums (XANES). These studies allowed to advance in the understanding of reactions mechanisms involved during ASR

Full textIn this PhD thesis, we study dynamical processes induced by resonant excitation or direct ionization in deep K shell through experimental measurement realized on model systems, the argon atom and the carbonyl sulfide molecule, OCS. We developed a new experimental setup, CELIMENE dedicated to coincidence measurement of charged fragments created after interaction between free atoms/molecules and synchrotron radiation. On Argon ionized at the K shell, the ion recoil of Ar n+ due to Auger electrons emission is measured for each ionic state and is used to disentangle relaxation pathways and the radiative decay rate in one measurement. This measurement performed in coincidence with the photoelectron is then used to estimate the lifetime of the intermediate state. For the OCS molecule ionized at the S1s shell, we used molecular mass center recoil to determine the main relaxation pathways for each fragmentation channel and measurement of the PCI effect on the photoelectron allowed a determination of the lifetime of the intermediate states in a molecular system. The comparison of the experimental and theoretical MFPADs has been done for the first time in the tender x-ray region for the OCS molecule ionized above S1s threshold. Finally, measurements of the momentum of the O+ C+ S+ fragments combined with a Coulomb explosion simulation allowed us to carefully study the dynamics the molecular three body fragmentation

Full textThe study of the practices of intervention convened in this research contributes to the understanding of the processes involved in the development of Secondary school Physical Education teachers’ identity at work. Whether they are specialists in the taught APSA or not, the activity vis-a-vis with the pupils of the "beginner", "experienced" and "expert" is not very comparable and tends to deviate from the common framework of the disciplinary project. In the implicit hierarchy and the power plays which are established between the three levels of the professional experience, the "experts", whose interventions constitute strong identity reference marks, seem to relay at the local level the institutional authority. During his/her identity construction, the "experienced" cultivates the doubt whereas the "beginner", vis-a-vis with the difficulties which he/she encounters, develops a confidence in the future. Lastly, the identity question renews the debates and traditional oppositions between the various didactic schools of thought in PE

Full textAlthough statistical physics has been very successful to describe physical systems at thermal equilibrium (thanks to the Boltzmann distribution, which reflects the maximization of the entropy, and allows one to construct in a systematic way thermodynamic potentials), it remains elusive to provide an efficient framework to study phenomena that are out-of-equilibrium, i.e displaying non vanishing current of physical quantities (energy, charge, particles...).The goal of the thesis is to describe such systems with very simple models which retain nevertheless their main physical features. The models consist in particles evolving randomly on a one dimensional lattice connected to reservoirs and subject to hard-core repulsion. The challenge lies in computing exactly the stationary state of the model, especially the particle current, its fluctuations and more precisely its large deviation function (which is expected to play the role of an out-of-equilibrium thermodynamic potential). In the first part of the thesis we construct models, called integrable, in which we can perform exact computations of physical quantities. We introduce several new out-of-equilibrium models that are obtained by solving, in specific cases, the Yang-Baxter equation and the reflection equation. We provide new algebraic structures which allow us to construct the solutions through a Baxterisation procedure. In the second part of the thesis we compute exactly the stationary state of these models using a matrix ansatz. We shed light on the connection between this technique and the integrability of the model by pointing out two key relations: the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev relation and the Ghoshal-Zamolodchikov relation. The integrability is also exploited, through the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, to compute the fluctuations of the particles current, unrevealing connections with the theory of symmetric polynomials (the Koornwinder polynomials in particular). Finally the last part of the thesis deals with the hydrodynamic limit of the models, i.e when the lattice spacing tends to $0$ and the number of particles tends to infinity. The exact results obtained for a finite size system allow us to check the validity of the predictions of the macroscopic fluctuations theory (concerning the fluctuations of the current and the density profile in the stationary state) and to extend the theory to systems with several species of particles

Full textThe presented work concerns the theoretical studies of (e, 2e), (e, 3e) and ([gamma], 2e) ionization process relative to two-electron targets, notably on : - the description of two-electron atomic or ionic systems, with the construction of a set of states describing the target in its ground state, and taking into account electronic correlations in the target ; - the description of the double continuum associate to the both emergence electrons with the positive energies in a coulomb field, in prolonging the method of Brauner et al. (1989). For (e, 2e) single ionization of helium, we have tempted to cover a large range of the possible kinematics, by showing in each of these regimes the importance of pre- and post-collision interactions, especially near the threshold. At low energy, and taking into account the indiscernability of electrons, we study exchange and capture effects. We have shown for the first time the importance of the capture contribution in the ionization cross sections. Furthermore, the study of dynamic screening effects (Berakdar 1996) has been also investigated. Confrontations of our results to various anterior calculations as well as to experimental data have allowed us, in most cases, to confirm the interest and the validity of our approach. We have also presented the cross sections of double ionization (e, 3e), and showing the correlation effects in the target and these resulting from the post-interactions. Furthermore, the cross sections of type (e,3-1e) have been calculated. Finally, this method has been applied to the study of the process of photo-double ionization ([gamma], 2e). It is worth noting that our results are in good agreement with recent experimental measure

Full textThis thesis deals with four topics related to non-reversible dynamics. Each is the subject of a chapter which can be read independently. The first chapter is a general introduction presenting the problematics and some major results of computational statistical physics. The second chapter concerns the numerical resolution of hypoelliptic partial differential equations, i.e. involving an invertible but non-coercive differential operator. We prove the consistency of the Galerkin method as well as convergence rates for the error. The analysis is also carried out in the case of a saddle-point formulation, which is the most appropriate in the cases of interest to us. We demonstrate that our assumptions are met in a simple case and numerically check our theoretical predictions on this example. In the third chapter we propose a general strategy for constructing control variates for nonequilibrium dynamics. In particular, this method reduces the variance of transport coefficient estimators by ergodic mean. This variance reduction is quantified in a perturbative regime. The control variate is based on the solution of a partial differential equation. In the case of Langevin's equation this equation is hypoelliptic, which motivates the previous chapter. The proposed method is tested numerically on three examples. The fourth chapter is connected to the third since it uses the same idea of a control variate. The aim is to estimate the mobility of a particle in the underdamped regime, where the dynamics are close to being Hamiltonian. This work was done in collaboration with G. Pavliotis during a stay at Imperial College London. The last chapter deals with Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes, which allow measure sampling in high-dimension. We prove the exponential convergence towards the equilibrium of several dynamics of this type under a general formalism including the Zig-Zag process (ZZP), the Bouncy Particle Sampler (BPS) and the Randomized Hybrid Monte Carlo (RHMC). The dependencies of the bounds on the convergence rate that we demonstrate are explicit with respect to the parameters of the problem. This allows in particular to control the size of the confidence intervals for empirical averages when the size of the underlying phase space is large. This work was done in collaboration with C. Full textThis work is concerned with the photostructuration of functionalized polymers for the elaboration of optical memories and temperature tunable microsystems. We have developed a two-photon microscopy setup to reach a high spatial selectivity through two-photon absorption (TPA) and second harmonic generation (SHG) processes. Indeed, the quadratic dependence of TPA and SHG on the excitation intensity allows to confine light-matter interactions to sub-micron volumes. Using Cis-Trans photoisomérisation properties of an azo dye (DR1), and the aforementioned spatial confinement, we have demonstrated the high storage density capacity of our optical memories. We have also used our experimental setup to photo-pattern microsystems in nematic thermoactive elastomers. We have taken advantage of the temperature dependent contraction properties of the material to elaborate some step changing diffraction gratings

Full textIn recent years, a broad number of works have shed light on the nature of irreversibility of nonequilibrium phenomena, have permited to redefine quantities such as work or entropy production at the level of trajectories, and to enlight their symmetries through the fluctuation theorems. During this thesis, we focused on these results in a purely classical and Markovian framework. We have unified the various formulations of the generalized fluctuation dissipation theorem around steady and unsteady nonequilibrium state by identifying the various sources of irreversibility and by making them appear in the system response. We have tried to link the fluctuation theorems with the theory of linear response which was possible using a generalization of the relation of Hatano and Sasa. In doing so, we found that different functionals verified symmetry properties similar to the fluctuation theorem for total entropy production. The study of the generalization of Hatano and Sasa relation led us to an inequality of the same type as the Clausius inequality. This new inequality gives a lower bound for the system entropy production during transition between non-stationary states, as the Clausius inequality do for transitions between equilibrium states. We have illustrated these ideas on a few simple cases analytical or numerical and in an experiment where we manipulate magnetic colloids. In these experiments, a Crooks relation is expected for a system with spacelly dependant diffusion coefficient, allowing to consider new tests of stochastic thermodynamics

Full textThe general problem is to analyze the impact of the choice of a mathematical framework in modeling on model predictions. In this thesis we study the deterministic, stochastic, discrete and time-scale framework. In particular we study the preservation of important structures by these various formalisms such as: the variational structure (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian), symmetries and in particular the first integrals (Noether theorems), the equilibrium points or more generally invariant sets and dynamical properties (stability, positivity, etc. ). These developments use the embedding formalism and in the discrete case, it allows to clarify the construction of variational or non-standard integrators. In the stochastic case, we obtain a modification of the Euler-Maruyama scheme which preserves dynamical constraints such as positivity. Each of these tools and results are illustrated in problems from astronomy and physics. We study a two-body problem with a stochastic perturbation then, a problem on the rotation of a body having stochastic variations of its flattening. The change of nature induced surprising effects such as an acceleration of the precession for the two-body problem, and for the rotation it allows to interpret, for example for the Earth, the effects observed until then unexplained. All this work has led to rethink the modeling and for that we constructed new objects into a framework that we called scale dynamic and allows to study objects and multiscale structures

Full textBifurcations in continuous dynamical systems, i.e., those described by ordinary differential equations, are found in a multitude of models such as those used to study phenomena related to physical, chemical, biological, ecological, economic and social systems. Using this concept as a unifying idea, in this thesis, we apply it to model and explore both Social as well as Physical systems. In the first part of this thesis we apply tools of statistical physics and bifurcation theory to model a problem of binary decision in Social Sciences. We find an scheme to predict the appearance of extreme jumps in these systems based on the notion of precursors which act as a kind of warning signal for the upcoming appearance of these catastrophic events. We also solve a mathematical model of social collapse based on a logistic re-growing equation used to model population grow and how limited resources change grow patterns. This model exhibits subcritical bifurcations and its relation to the social phenomenon of sunk-cost effect is studied. This last phenomenon explains how past investments affect current decisions and the combination of both phenomena is used as a model to explain the disintegration of some ancient societies, based on evidence from archeological records. In the second part of this thesis, we study macroscopic systems described by multidimensional stochastic differential equations or equivalently by their deterministic counterpart, the multidimensional FokkerPlanck equation. A new and alternative scheme of computation based on Path Integrals, related to stochastic processes is introduced in order to calculate the Probability Distribution Function. The computations based on this Path Integral scheme are performed on systems in one and two dimensions and contrasted to some soluble models completely validating this method. We also extended this scheme to the case of computation of Mean Exit Time, finding a new expression for each computation in systems in arbitrary dimensions. It is worth noting that in case of two-dimensional dynamical systems, the computations of both the probability distribution function as well as of the mean exit time validated the Path Integral scheme and the perspective for continuing this line of work are based on the fact that this method is valid for both arbitrary non gradient systems and noise intensities. This opens the possibility to explore new cases, for which no methods are known to obtain them

Full textStochastic differential equations are a powerfull tool of mathematics. Applications range from finance or physics to biology. Those models can be very efficient to modelise numerous phenomenons where uncertainties are involved. In order to have a better understanding of those stochastic differential equations, this work studies the solutions of a subclass, called Bernstein (or Schrödinger) processes. Those processes are linked to the heat equation by construction. Two types of results are presented here. Some are about the heat equation and totally independant from any probabilistic context. For example, we compute the flows associated with the heat equation for three different potential and we study the structure of the Lie algebra of symmetries for those equations. Other results are presented: we show how it is possible to parametrize one factor affine models with Bernstein processes. We also give a necessary condition for the parametrization of -factor affine models with Berntein processes
