The practice of gardening and growing-your-own (GYO) produce in urban areas, has been associated with many potential benefits to health from increased fruit and vegetable consumption and exercise, but also health risks arising from exposure to potentially toxic elements (such as cadmium: Cd, and lead: Pb) in urban soils. However, the potential health benefits of gardening are currently overlooked by authorities during assessments of contaminated land, which may result in access to urban gardens and allotments being incorrectly restricted or removed because of concerns over the impact to human

Control of pathogens by means of plant-derived plant protection products (PPPs) can be an effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly method of crop protection in organic agriculture. Larix decidua (European larch) bark is a by-product of the wood processing industry and provides a readily available, low cost and sustainable raw material. It was therefore planned to commercialise Larix extracts, containing two highly active diterpenoids (larixyl acetate and larixol) into a marketable PPP, Larixyne®, to combat grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) in organic farming. Gene transcripts that are upregulated during stress are normally involved in protection and/ or adaptation, leading to stress tolerance. The genomic organisation of XvAld1 was characterised using Southern blot analysis and DNA sequencing. The results revealed more than one copy of the gene with a complex banding pattern that was partially resolved by sequencing. The sequencing of PCRamplified genomic clones showed that the

Objective: To establish stable transgenic non-toxic plants as a platform for plant-based vaccine production as well as potential oral delivery system of vaccine antigens for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The concept is to immunize the mucosal immune system present in the gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT). HIV-1 p24 subtype C protein has been used as the main antigen model, in parallel with an engineered unique chimeric MOMP antigen from Chlamydia trachomatis serovar E. Methods: Chimeric MOMP and p24 vaccine antigens were successfully inserted into the nuclear genomes of Arabidop

Abstract:
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to be the cause of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers as well as genital and common warts. There are currently three prophylactic virus-like particle (VLP) based vaccines. These vaccines, however, do not offer protection against all HPV strains and cannot act therapeutically and so further vaccine development is still needed. The burden of HPV is also highest in low-income countries for which the vaccine costs are still quite high, and therefore alternative methods of vaccine production and testing are needed. HPV pseudovirions (PsVs) are synthetic viral p

Risk assessment process is complex because it requires a multidisciplinary approach. In official European procedures, risk is assessed on standardised scenarios, where the territory, at different scale levels is described without taking into account the spatial variability of parameters. These approaches represent a powerful tool to characterize potential risk, anyway results obtained are not representative of actual site-specific conditions. The aim of this research was to analyse the main critical issues of agrochemicals risk assessment in terrestrial ecosystems. Different steps of agrochemi
