Abstract:
Widely differing theoretical expectations exist concerning the economic performance of labor-managed firms or producer cooperatives (PCs). While a good number of theoretical studies of these firms by economists have been undertaken, there remain considerable gaps in the empirical record. This is especially true in the case of American PCs. In general, theoretical controversies have not been tempered by enough empirical analysis. While some expect good performance from PCs, others are much less sanguine. This study compares the economic performance of a group of eight worker-owned producer co-op plants with that of eight conventional mills in the Pacific Northwest softwood plywood industry. The purpose is to test the validity of several propositions that are typically maintained in the analysis of PCs suggesting that this type of organization basically lacks the incentive to utilize labor inputs efficiently, and is therefore less productive when compared to conventionally organized producing units. Using secondary data, pooled time-series cross-section equations are estimated. Results indicate that growth in annual output per employee per year is 18 percent greater in the co-ops than in their conventional counterparts. The study provides strong evidence that the two groups of plants differ significantly in their behavior. The major conclusion that emerges is that worker-owned co-ops are a viable and productive form of economic organization that utilize labor inputs efficiently and in doing so can achieve higher worker productivity than their conventional counterparts. In a public policy context, government support of employee ownership and establishment of worker-owned co-ops is viewed as a viable policy option to plant closings.

Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) is national milk marketing cooperative. DFA’s primary focus is to market the milk of the cooperative’s 17,000 members. In addition, DFA offers its membership a number of farm services. The sole purpose of these services is to make it easier for DFA members to operate their businesses. One of the services offered provides members access to forward contracting alternatives for pricing their milk. The objective of this research is to utilize demographic and other information related to the characteristics of individual dairy producers and determine how these characteristics impact the use (or lack thereof) of risk management marketing tools. More specifically, the focus of this research is to identify what types of dairy producers are most likely to use the DFA’s forward contracting program. The logit model estimated indicated that regional and demographic differences impact the use of DFA’s forward contracting program. Members in the Mountain Area are most likely to use the program followed by members in the Central Area. Demographic differences that significantly impacted the use of forward contracting include age (older producers use forward contracts less than younger operators) and the size of operation, as measured by milk produced per year (larger operators were more likely to use forward contracting services). While the estimated logit model did identify several factors related to the use of forward contracting services, relationships are not particularly strong and the percent of producers using the services is relatively low. Thus, the model is limited in its ability for identifying key factors and thus it will be difficult for DFA to base a targeted marketing effort at certain producers. DFA would need additional information about their members to successfully target for this farm service.

Abstract:
In 2001 the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) was created by some of the world’s leading natural gas producing and exporting countries in order to promote their mutual interests through cooperation, in particular with regard to extracting the maximum value from their natural gas exports. My core research question is: Does cooperation among GECF member countries explain those exporters’ market power in highly import-dependent natural gas consuming countries? To determine the influence of the GECF’s cooperative actions and policies, I study the GECF’s cooperative behaviour and measure the role of (collusive) producer conduct in terms of its contribution to achieving the main GECF objective: attaining gas prices that are measurably above the cost of production and hence help producers earn significant economic rents. I employ a variety of methods from the international relations literature on cooperation and cartelisation, collective action theory and an economic measurement model in three case studies. I find that cooperation among GECF members partly explains their market power in a number of import-dependent gas markets. This is so despite the GECF’s weak degree of institutionalisation. The reasons for the GECF’s influence on effective cooperative results are: first, conducive structural conditions in many gas importing markets favouring cartelisation; second, GECF members use methods such as artificial market entry barriers (e.g. long-term term contracts negotiated in a non-transparent way) to secure their market power and third, the GECF faces less severe internal procedural challenges that plague other cartels such as collective action problems, especially cheating. Cooperation among GECF exporters hence contributes to high(er) prices of natural gas. This causes economic inefficiencies and a transfer of wealth—and political power—from gas consumers to producers. It also hinders climate change mitigation as cleanerburning gas remains too expensive to replace ‘dirty’ coal in power generation.

Abstract:
This study investigated the impact of government support on growth, survival and performance of agricultural cooperatives in selected areas of Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The objectives of this empirical study were to examine (1) the impact of government support on growth of cooperatives, (2) assess the impact of government support on the performance of cooperatives, (3) reviewing the impact of government support on survival of cooperatives. A total sample of 157 agricultural cooperatives which consisted of poultry, maize, goat, nursery, sheep and vegetable coops was used. Stratified random sampling technique was used and a self-administered questionnaire used to gather primary data. The primary data of the study was gathered from the cooperatives managers only as they were the targeted respondents. Gathered data went through factor analysis, anova test and correlation analysis for the statistical analysis purposefully to arrive in study findings and conclusion. The findings of the study drawn from the 66% response rate concluded that government support has a statistical significant impact on growth of cooperatives. The study also indicated that government support has a significant impact on the survival of cooperatives. It is also reported that the performance of cooperatives is significantly impacted positively by government support. The findings of the study also indicated that agricultural cooperatives are not satisfied with the present government support.

Abstract:
Independent developers and large-scale development studios - commonly seen as the Davids and Goliaths of the video game industry - are moving closer together. Powerful software frameworks, traditionally reserved for professional developers and only available through expensive licenses, are becoming free to use for consumers. By sharing their tools instead of keeping them for themselves, companies can utilize the combined talent of whole communities and monetize on that talent through royalties and other indirect fees. This paper describes how the video game industry has developed in recent years to allow for this change in business strategy and examines how the industry can continue to evolve because of this. The result of a Delphi study based on interviews with game developers both inside and outside the industry point toward a future of increased intermingling and sharing of knowledge and resources, characterized by more producer-consumer collaborations and closer relationships between companies and their communities. By adopting free-to-use business models and sharing powerful, proprietary software with their consumers, companies are lowering the point of entry for aspiring developers and thereby dissolving the traditional narrative of “we and them” that has existed between independent developers and established studios in the past.

Waste generation is a global challenge to be faced, especially in industrializing countries such as Brazil, where high waste generation in line with structural problems and inadequate waste management can result in environmental, economic and social problems. Thus, recycling can be considered as an important strategy to face this challenge in order to develop practices focused on the triple bottom line (sustainability). The recycling chain in Brazil is considered complex involving multiple actors, among them we can highlight the activities of scavengers as fundamental agents on viability of recycling. However, the scavengers are not always recognized, they are the ones that benefit least in the chain and they face several difficulties. In seeking to overcome the difficulties and achieve better positioning in the chain, scavengers have organized into cooperatives, networks and materials processing centers. From the environmental point of view, recycling processes, especially of post-consumer plastics, can also have an impact on the environment, if management is not established from the collection until the final disposal of the same. It is therefore important to adopt environmental management tools such as Cleaner Production (CP), for example, that result in benefits to the environment, society and organizations. This research aimed to identify opportunities for improvement in plastics recycling process in a cooperative of Sorocaba-SP, through the use of the CP tool. The research consisted of a case study in a cooperative that performs the recycling process of Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP), transforming them into flakes and / or pellets. The steps of the CP adopted in this research were based on the Centro Nacional de Tecnologias Limpas (CNTL, 2003) and complemented by SEBRAE guidelines (2005) and by the study of Silva et al. (2013). The following steps were carried out: awareness and general characterization of the cooperative, mapping of the recycling process, quantification of input and output streams, definition of indicators, selection of the evaluation focus, identification of causes of waste generation, effluents and emissions, and identification of CP opportunities. The study revealed that the recycling process of the cooperative is passive to generate environmental impacts, mainly due to the lack of standardization of the raw material and the high consumption of water in the washing stage and consequent generation of effluents. 25 improvement opportunities were identified, focusing mainly on level 1 of housekeeping. In addition, barriers to CP in the cooperative were identified, especially those related to financial issues and lack of government support. Thus, it is necessary to overcome these barriers to an effective implementation of the CP and obtain the consequent economic, environmental and social benefits.

Trupo, Paul. "Agricultural Cooperation and Horticultural Produce Marketing in Southwest Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36871.

Full text
Abstract:

Agricultural production in Southwest Virginia is characterized by numerous small, geographically disperse farms dedicated to traditional practices of producing tobacco and cattle. Community leaders have expressed the desire to diversify the region's agricultural production base to include potentially more profitable commodities such as horticultural crops. In order for the small growers to penetrate the fresh horticultural market and compete with the larger production regions, they must organize themselves into a farmer cooperative that allows them to pool resources, reduce costs, and share risk.

A successful cooperative will increase farm incomes for the region's producers. The co-op will strive to obtain a higher price for the commodities produced than that price which can be obtained by growers acting independently. The increase in farm incomes should offset forecasted decreases in agricultural incomes resulting from declines in the region's traditional production activities. Increased farm incomes for a large number of small growers should have a substantial impact on agricultural producers, marketers, and equipment suppliers and lead to economic development for the region as a whole.

Several past horticultural cooperative efforts have been publicly financed and eventually failed for a wide variety of reasons. The methodology used in this research include surveying and interviewing marketing specialists, co-op managers, growers, extension agents, horticulturists, and other experts involved with both successful and failed cooperative efforts. The data gathered from these interviews has been used to identify key factors that have contributed to the success or failure of the other cooperative efforts.

Based on the key factors identified from the research, a specific cooperative structure has been developed for the Southwest Virginia growers. This organizational structure incorporates into its legal documentation (bylaws, business plan, and marketing agreement) the critical factors that must be carried out by members, management, extension, and marketers in order to increase the probability for the cooperative's long-term survival and profitability.

Abstract:
Agricultural cooperatives are intermediary economic structures that allow the creation of more favorable conditions of relationship with the markets. According to Cook (1995), these organizations have diffuse or vaguely defined property rights leading to management difficulties and economic inefficiency. From the mentioned aspects, this dissertation proposed to analyze and discuss the existence of the problem of the horizon and the hitch in cooperatives of milk producers familiar in Rio Grande do Sul, cooperatives with a different profile of the organizations analyzed by Cook (1995) and later by Brazilian authors. For this purpose, a non-probabilistic intentional sample was used in which 2 cooperatives of family milk producers were surveyed. Thirty-one semi-structured interview scripts were applied to the cooperative milk producers, officials and presidents of the organizations selected for the study. Interviews were conducted in the second half of 2016. The results indicate that producers have a short-term view of the enterprise, ie producers are not willing to take risks in the organization and are more concerned with their agricultural property than with the cooperative organization. In relation to the strategies used to minimize these problems, these were presented in a different way from the strategies proposed by Cook (1995) It was also noticed that the respondents do not have a clear perception of the strategies that are used in the organization. In addition, cooperatives do not have a clear vision of their role within the organization, this lack of definition generates space for opportunistic actions that undermine the management of cooperatives. It can be considered that problems stemming from diffuse property rights interfere and may lead to inefficiencies in the management of cooperative organizations of milk producers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Therefore, for the survival of these organizations it is necessary that some strategies be adopted and others intensified to minimize observed governance problems.

This study is a sociological analysis of participatory-democratic organisations in 'third world' contexts. Firstly, it assesses the degree of participatory democracy in each enterprise studied. Secondly, it explores whether cooperative development is a process. Thirdly, it assesses the applicability of existing theory in the field for organisations in 'third world' contexts. The data used is predominantly qualitative, though quantitative information is utilised. Qualitative data is gathered from in-depth interviews using semi-structured questionnaires, observation and the examination of primary sources. Empirical information is analysed in the light of theoretical constructs reviewed and practical constraints identified by other researchers in the field. The key construct is an 'ideal-type' participatory-democratic organisation. Significant findings include the following: (a) cooperatives in 'third world' contexts are formed and joined primarily for material reasons; (b) specific constraints include a severe lack of basic education among cooperators, relationships of dependency between co-ops and service organisations, and a 'survival' consciousness among cooperative members; (c) the nature of relationships between cooperatives and service organisations have significant implications for co-op development; (d) there is a relationship between organisational structures and viability as an economic unit and (e) members in different positions in the enterprise have different conceptions of cooperation. The study concludes that cooperative development is a process involving different stages characterised by different degrees of participation in decision-making, viability, organisational development and cooperative consciousness.

Abstract:
The success of cooperatives depends increasingly on the opportunities of people to integrate the cooperative environment to be valued to ensure a quality service to its members and customers. It is known that with the fierce market competition, cooperatives seek to improve the quality of care, loyalty to their members. It is observed that the services remain competitive in the market and the quality is a prerequisite for competitiveness, so it is necessary to provide a better service to members and customers. This paper, case study, presents a study that is also characterized as a research uses exploratory and qualitative method approach to data collection and analysis. The objective was to identify the quality necessary to maintain the assets members for their loyalty in a cooperative agroindustrial located in western Santa Catarina. To achieve the objectives it was necessary at first, perform a literature search on Cooperatives and Cooperative Services, and Quality services, and, second, conducting empirical research with the members and customers. To gather data Questionnaires were administered and was later drafted the text and the theoretical calculation and analysis of data. The results indicate that the cooperative is a strong ally of its members and provides a good level of customer loyalty and satisfaction among the different age groups and levels of education, where loyalty is directly linked to satisfaction, quality of care and services provided.

Abstract:
Reflecting the fact that the cooperative sector in the U.K. has experienced record growth over the past fifteen years, this thesis forms an investigation of the organisation and behaviour of producer cooperatives. The theoretical literature surrounding the labour — managed firm is examined and subjected to testing and empirical observation. In this way a fuller understanding of the cooperative sector and of participatory arrangements in general is achieved. The theory and issues underlying this approach are based on Williamson's (1980) notion of hierarchy, the neoclassical literature surrounding perverse supply effects and extensions of that, examining the nature of the cooperative objective function, growth, managerialism and degeneration, and the nature of self— exploitation in an economy dominated by large capital. The empirical contributions are derived from a data set of 78 producer cooperatives collected by the author. In the analysis contained in this thesis it has been possible to question accepted theory, to offer some alternative modelling approaches, largely based on the use of probit analysis and to seek to describe and explain more fully certain aspects of the organisation and behaviour of U.K. cooperatives. In doing so some attempt has been made to extend the analysis beyond the boundaries of pure economics and to consider facets of participation provided in other disciplines. Many different measures have been used in the thesis which indicate that whilst cooperatives, like many small businesses, will face problems surviving in the market place, they nevertheless seem largely successful in pursuing their stated objectives. Many of the 'accepted' negative aspects of the cooperative form of organisation, such as perverse supply — side responses, have been shown to be based on restrictive assumptions about the labour — managed enterprise. Assertions about the existence and survival of cooperatives based on ideas of degeneration and self— exploitation have been shown to be questionable. Perhaps surprising to some, it is shown that management does play an important role in the organisation and behaviour of many cooperatives. For example, the existence of some sort of management structure seems important in those firms with high growth aspirations. Much of the discussion in this thesis suggests that worker involvement can bring about productivity increases. In effect, it is argued that participation can lead to augmentation of the production function. Traditional businesses in general might therefore be advised to consider adopting participation in the workplace. On the other hand cooperatives should also realise that success in conventional terms can often enable them to better pursue their political motivations.

The environment of the research were the health branch of the cooperatives in the State of Paraiba, which were registered in SESCOOP -PB. For the comparative analysis of the data was used the statistical test nonparametric Mann -Whitney test (U test), it was adopted the significance level of 5 % (α = 0.05) whose data processing happened with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences - SPSS. From the application of U test can be concluded that Values, Transparency and Governance Cooperative approach cooperatives of Cooperatives Socially Responsible status. In contrast dimensions: Workforce, Environment, Suppliers, Users and Cooperative, Community, Government and Society do not have practices with features that enable the approximation of Socially Responsible status of cooperatives.

Abstract:
Worker co-operatives, meaning firms producing goods or services that are owned and managed by their workers, have been a marginal and problematic form of production in Britain since their first period of substantial growth in the 19th century. They have recurrent difficulties attracting capital, developing business expertise among their members, sustaining long-term commitment and growing to the size required to compete efficiently in many industries. Yet there has been a remarkable upsurge of interest in co-operatives during the past decade, and their many successes in diverse industries demonstrate that co-operatives can offer their members a powerful combination of strong business performance and a highly satisfying work life. This thesis asks whether the weaknesses apparent in co-operatives historically, and present in many still today, are inherent in the co-operative form. Is the co-operative sector bound to remain basically marginal, or could it, with the aid of some practical reforms, come to play a significant role in the British economy? Recognising that any answer to this question is speculative, the thesis concludes that co-operatives are not inherently flawed indeed they fail at about the same rate as traditionally organised small businesses but that they do place an unusual range of demands on members which, in a legal, financial and political climate not yet geared to co-operatives, mean that democratic firms are likely to remain a small portion of the economy. The plan of the thesis is as follows: After a brief introductory chapter, Chapter Two surveys the present state of British co-operatives and examines the external economic and legal environment in which co-operatives function. Chapter Three surveys recent research in organisational behaviour, especially about small group behaviour in traditional businesses, to assess whether the high productivity frequently asserted for co-operatives has theoretical foundation, whether co-operatives commonly violate any established principles of good organisational design and whether large co-operatives can be run efficiently and democratically. Chapter Four presents the economic status of women in the British workforce and looks at whether the attributes of co-operatives are congruent with women's needs. Two mini-case studies are presented, of a bookselling and a cleaning co-operative, each composed entirely of women. Chapters Five, Six and Seven present the results of the field research conducted for this thesis. Each is a case study of a functioning co-operative based on extensive interviews with its members, reviews of the co-operative's files, and a brief analysis of its financial performance. The goal was to understand as much as possible about the consequences of choosing the co-operative form: for the members' job satisfaction and for the firm's productivity, market sensitivity, ability to grow, ability to employ women, and internal dynamics. Chapter Eight sets out the conclusions suggested by comparing the case studies in light of the literature examined in Chapters Two through Four.

Abstract:
The initiation of more cooperative relations between the companies and the union (IWA-Canada) in the B.C. solid wood products sector, on the one hand, and between these two and the federal government, on the other hand, appears to signal an end to the "exceptionalism" which precluded the establishment of "corporatism" in Canadian industry. As the sector has been under tremendous pressure from various structural and technological changes, as well as interest groups both inside the forest industry and outside of it, does this change in industrial relations provide a model for the future forest industry or is it an impediment to change, as many critics contend. This thesis will explore the formation of "Fordist" industrial relations in the sector and the present "crisis" in Fordism as it relates to the sector, in order to understand the factors impelling cooperative industrial relations, and how these factors will affect these relations in the future. As these factors are undermining Fordism, they might also undermine the tentative, defensive cooperation between the three parties. In place of this exclusive policy-making regime a new, broad-based, decentralized, and more democratically controlled forest sector might emerge which will encourage cooperative industrial relations, but without the dominance of the old Fordist structures. The ensuing changes will widely affect economic, political and social relations throughout the province.

Abstract:
This Thesis documents an exploratory investigation into the effect of poor information management on successful job and organisation design in workers' co-operatives. It was hypothesised that lack of availability and poor distribution of information militate against successful job and organisation design. Since sound information management is imperative for decision making and successful job and organisation design ensures workers satisfaction this study is fully justified. It is important that workers' co-operatives are economically successful and that people enjoy working in them. The topic is particularly important for the workers' co-operative movement because little research has been conducted on the links between information management and job and organisation design. The Thesis summarises the main issues and concepts relevant to the research topic and describes the implications of information management for job and organisation design in workers' co-operatives. The purchasing processes in four workers' co-operatives in Scotland were chosen as the information systems to be studied. Research field work, in the form of a Job Diagnosis Survey was also carried out to establish the links between information management and job and organisation design. Research results have been examined in relation to the participative arrangements one associates with workers' co-operatives. It was found that in addition to information management, other issues have an effect on successful job and organisation design. These include: objectives of each business; Argyris's Theory in Action; Lack of management skills; and poor systems design. This led to a comparison of the four co-operatives studied with the very successful Mondragon Group. Finally the implications of the research results have been discussed in relation to the workers' co-operative movement and to future research by those interested or involved in the movement.

Abstract:
The present doctoral dissertation deals with the transformational impact that information and communication technologies are generating in the field of cooperativism in the network society era, and how these technologies, through an online platform, are restructuring how organizations operate. This new platform cooperativism takes advantage of digital commons as an instrument of technological infrastructure tied to the values that define it and, possibly, an essential instrument for its scalability. This research focuses on studying the fit of consumer cooperatives 1) in the promotion of local economic and social development, through so-called short circuits of commercialization, 2) under the umbrella of a fairer economic model based on the values of the social and solidarity economy, and 3) participating in social movements with the will to establish themselves as political subjects. This threefold intersection of areas allows for a holistic understanding of its social, economic and political dimensions tying it to the values and action of platform cooperativism.

This dissertation discusses the construction of the operational methods in the conveyor belt of sorting recyclable materials in a collectors' cooperative. Cooperatives represent not only a way out of the problems of management of municipal solid waste, but also a possibility of integration and income generation for people who are outside the formal work. Nevertheless, the search for income and better life clashes with precarious working conditions. In this context, the aim of this study is to understand how the cooperative regulate their activity against the difficulties in the conveyor belt of sorting recyclable materials. The applied methodology includes a case study outlined by the Activity Ergonomics. The results indicate both an intense physical and mental effort associated with the collection of recyclable materials. During the activity, the cooperative members face few situations which may affect the objectives and regulate their activity without risking their internal state. Collective joints emerge from the conveyor belt as a possibility of collective regulation of the difficulties arising from the instantaneous overlapping variations (volume, variety and condition of materials) and ascending and descending requirements. These results indicate that the collection of recyclable materials is only possible through the inventiveness of the cooperative members to use perceptual exploration and solve problems facing the pace of work.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes towards understanding the role of production and labor cooperatives in urban and industrial Catalonia between 1864 and 1936, providing a panoramic overview of their development. The first section provides a status of the issue that certifies the scant attention received by this phenomenon in the historiography. Then, according to their chronological development, there have been stablished three big periods. The first period, we have called the "cooperative myth", corresponds to the second half of the nineteenth century. In that moment were founded the first production and labor cooperatives in Catalonia due to the theoretical approaches of pre-Marxist socialists. The second period analyzed is entitled "Marginalization" (1898-1930). Through the available documentation it has rescued the history of some of the production cooperatives formed during this period. Also it has been analyzed the difficulties, both intrinsic and extrinsic, that motivated the poor development of production and labor cooperatives during this period. In the third and last section, entitled "Eclosion" (1931-1936), it has been assisted to the effective development of production and labor cooperatives during the Second Spanish Republic. Through a comprehensive analysis of all the documentation generated by the Production and Labor Cooperatives Federation and the cooperative and trade union press, it has been analyzed their evolution and problems; their implementation by industrial sectors and crafts; their relations with the rest of the labor movement and the municipal and regional government and, additionally, it has made a quantitative assessment of the phenomenon of production and labor cooperatives taken as a whole. In view of this research it has been possible conclude that more than one hundred production and labor cooperatives were founded during the Second Spanish Republic in Catalonia. Also had an unequal distribution, considering their concentration mainly in the production of glass and trades of the construction sector. These cooperatives proliferated thanks to the collective survival instinct developed by manual workers, whose struggle was focused on avoiding extinction in an economic crisis context.

Abstract:
This plan aims to: Propose a Business Plan to introduce the Credit-Agreement Product in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Lima through a Savings and Credit Cooperative, and with the aim of increasing the number of partners, reinforce the brand and provide a better service according to the market In this sense, the work begins with the analysis of the external and internal environment of the company, finding opportunities linked to the growth of demand, the use of new information and communication technologies, the current legislation that contributes to the growth of cooperatives. Likewise, threats related to the entry of new competitors (Multiple Banking) in the micro-financial segment, the high level of informality in SMEs and the political instability of the country Regarding the market, the opportunity was found to introduce the product (Credit-Agreement) in 1,079 companies (SMEs) that have between 50 and 100 workers, which due to their size are not attractive for Cooperatives that offer the same service, such as: Cooperatives Level 1, Level 2, CMAC and CRAC. When developing the fieldwork (Employer and worker), three main variables that influence the purchase decision were obtained: 1- Shorter time of attention of the credit application. 2- Completion of the procedures digitally. 3- Electronic payment of the loan in the client's account, as long as an average market rate is maintained. Additionally, 400 surveys were taken of workers who work in the target segment companies, determining that 49% accept the concept of Credit - Agreement (Discount per payroll) Within the 49% group that prefers the payroll discount, 68% accept the proposed advantages: fast service (24 hours), digital processing and an average market rate of 21%, in such a way that our target market is 34%. Finally, with the application of the proposed Business Plan, the five-year cash flow results in a NPV of S / 468,508 with an IRR of 42%, values that allow the project to be accepted.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The knowledge required for decision making in a firm is distributed across various departments. In practice cross functional teams are used to integrate this distributed knowledge. Incentive schemes are of crucial importance to encourage departments to share knowledge. In this paper, we study different incentive schemes by means of a two stage model. In the first step departments have to choose between learning and sharing knowledge, in the second stage, they bargain about a new product feature. The outcome of the bargaining process in the second stage depends on the capabilities of the agents and their uncertainty about the opponent. The result of the second stage determines the agents' payoffs which in turn influence the time allocation. In a simulation study, we investigate different incentive systems and show to which extent a firm has to reward the sharing of knowledge in order to reach its overall objectives. Furthermore, we are able to derive an analytical solution for the bargaining process under uncertainty and compute Nash equilibria for a discrete set of possible actions. (author's abstract)

The objective of this study was to identify the rate of seed usage (RSU) of soybean seeds from Cotrija members of the crop years of 2008/09 to 2012/2013. To obtain the RSU the seed acquisition file from the cooperative electronic system was used. The cultivation area was generated by the technical department of Cotrijal by mapping system. The results showed a low RSU varying according to crop and units. The Cotrijal farmers with cultivation areas up to 160 ha bought more seeds. some suggestions were made to increase the RSU as: deliver the seed via industrial treatment; diffusion field days; establish marketing goals; marketing plan; campaign to combat pirate seed; identify the actual size of the seed business, through seed utilization rate; training; encourage producers to purchase certified seed at the cooperative; promote access to new technological events and new soybean cultivars. The trend over the crops is that members of Cotrijal wil give preference to certified soybean seeds, when they realize that it generate positive results with good field stand.

This dissertation analyzes the productive activities related to the wool culture in the county of Jaguarão - RS, directing the research to two local organizations: the Association of Artisans of Jaguarão - RS and the Cooperative of wool Mauá. The objective of this research was to identify the comercialization strategies and value aggregation used by the social actors who are part of this supply chain, as well the way as the social relations are maintained in this context. In addition, the research approaches the effects of the income, generated with these labors, on the lives of social actors and their expectations related to the future of these activities. This research is a case study, with three units of analysis (Association of Artisans, Cooperative of Wool and Center of Solidarity Economy). For this, 16 semi-structured interviews were accomplished with the social actors involved in the production of sheep wool and in the handcrafts, which were systematized and analyzed through content analysis. The information collected in the field reveals difficulties of organization and cooperation in the sector as a whole, which also reflects in the analyzed groups. Individualistic practices prevail over collective interest, making difficult to delimit and to achieve common goals. From the point of view of the cooperative, one of the main difficulties is the lack of trust and participation of the partners. The immediatist acting of the cooperative members, who deliver their wool production to the "barraqueiros", on detriment of the organization which they are partners, weakens the action both in terms of commercialization volume as well as in collaborative aspects and union between producers. The Association of Artisans also experiences problems. Disagreements between the members led to the departure of some artisans and the foundation of another group. Dialogue problems and collaboration between the two groups, that have different, but complementary skills, create obstacles for developing the wool handcraft in the city. In addition, the current scenario of sheep production is dealing with a complicated situation, where the monocultures (especially soybeans) have been progressed, taking the space of the livestock farming in the region. Another critical factor is the cattle steal, which has frequently affected local sheep producers. In this context, local ators seek for strategies of distinction to increase value to their products. The sheep producers has the challenge of bringing the members of the cooperative back together and encouraging their participation. Also there is the intention to implement a new method of packing the wool, which would make it possible attest the fiber purity and thus valorize it. The local artisans, on the other hand, are expecting to implement some certification method for their products with help of the State, as the recent case when they tried the recognition of IPHAN as immaterial patrimony.Despite this conjucture unfavorable, the income generated by these activities has great importance for the social actors lives who find in it an tool to expand their capabilities, promoting individual freedoms.

Abstract:
Significant changes in market behavior arouse the need to adopt new processes and management tools in order to make organizations more competitive and sustainable. Tálamo and Carvalho (2004) to denote the creation of a new economic order based on the structuring of different ways regarding the management and organizational control. In this perspective Pinheiro and Silva (2010, p. 3) indicate that the cooperative has evolved and conquered their own space, defined by a new way of thinking man's labor and social development . Thus, the overall goal of this work is to identify and analyze the system management tools and internal control of a cooperative in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, proposing a theoretical model applicable to that type of organization . In order to provide the framework for knowledge needed to develop this work, we took the theoretical model of cooperative management proposed by Oliveira (2006). Associated with the management, we investigated the internal control procedures, defined by Crepaldi (2007). The methodological contribution this study was a qualitative study, based on field research procedures, descriptive and exploratory. The method was case study allowed investigation of deep theoretical and its practical applicability in the context of a cooperative. The techniques were adopted methodological collection, analysis and organization of data. To obtain answers regarding the issue were used interviews, questionnaires, document analysis and direct observation. Primarily for the analysis of the results were taken as some techniques: classification, categorization, tabulation, statistical quantitative percentage and essentially content analysis. Finally, based on this detailed account of the results, on the model of cooperative management and internal control tools practiced by Cooperative, concluded categorically that the methods, routines, procedures, activities, as well as all organizational assembly caters largely to the theoretical model proposed by Oliveira (2006) and, to a lesser degree, related to a medium degree, the model Crepaldi (2007) as being necessary and crucial for organizations embedded in dynamic and competitive markets, aiming at sustainability of its business in all fields. This all gave effective conditions so that one could propose a theoretical model applicable to cooperative that included the cooperative doctrine, organizational management and internal control.

Abstract:

The growing demand for empirical and theoretical research in relation to the evaluation of the sustainability in the performance of agricultural cooperatives operations, besides the need for economic, social and environmental balance in the strategic planning and management of agricultural cooperatives operations, leads to the objective of the research to develop a model evaluation of sustainability performance of agricultural cooperatives operations. In order to meet the proposed objective, a systematic survey of the scientific literature on sustainability assessment models of agricultural cooperatives operations was carried out, which enabled the identification of the characteristics and functionalities of the existing models and a conceptual map of the most commonly used indicators and principles. To refine and systematize this set of universal guiding principles applicable to the thematic experts were interviewed and delimited the scope of the evaluation and identified measures of performance of sustainable operations for agricultural cooperative operations which was named Sustainability Assessment for Agriculture Cooperatives (SAAC). And through multiple case studies using a common methodology with interviews, observations and documentary analysis was refined and tested the SAAC model it was verified that the indicators used in the proposed model are adequate to the reality of sustainability practices in the operations of agricultural cooperatives and in formulating their strategies. The model proved to be feasible, relative ease to use and useful and can be based on the evaluation of the sustainable performance of agricultural cooperatives operations and source for the elaboration and development of policies on sustainable development in agricultural cooperatives, improving their strategic management. Thus, the research contributes both to the theoretical and empirical evolution for the theme, as well as to the agricultural cooperatives, providing an auxiliary base to initiate a process of evaluation of sustainable performance in agricultural cooperatives or to feed an existing one; while for society, it facilitates the verification of sustainable actions carried out by the sector; and for Production Engineering provides the understanding regarding the subject and arranges the SAAC model for assistance in the strategic management of operations of agricultural cooperatives.

Abstract:
This study examines the impact of technological complexity on the commercialization objectives of cost, time to market, and rate of new product introductions in the jet aircraft industry. It shows how technological complexity interacts with other dimensions of the technology, namely maturity and a high need for reliability, to generate distinctive product-development challenges. The study also shows how one firm - the lead firm - has overcome the challenges posed by these three technological characteristics through managing a decentralized design-build network composed of suppliers who have significant levels of design responsibility.

This study aims to evaluate the technical and economic performance of dairy cattle, identify the main barriers in activity, indicating the possible causes by identifying the technological profile of milk producers. In order to achieve this goal, it was made with data collected through survey questionnaires to the producers of milk Quixeramobim, Cearà State. Based on the literature review, we divided the system of milk production to conduct the evaluation of the technological level of the producers, in three components: management of the activity, system infrastructure of production and herd management. We analyzed to plot the producersthe following factors: marketing, productivity, racial profiling of herds, expenses incurred and gross revenues from the activity. Next, we determined the technological indices for each component separately and for all of them, based on its recommended technology, creating the mean rates of technology and technology index for dairy cattle. The producers were stratified by means of cluster analysis, presented as the technological level and used to analyze the individual contribution of each and every indicator in the index constituents. The evaluation of cost was performed using the methodology of the Integrated Agricultural Costs - CUSTAGRI. We identified four levels of technology which were subsequently laminated and used for the analysis of technological, economic, cost estimates and assessment of profitability. The survey showed that the main deficiency of the producers is to adopt appropriate management practices. Access to credit, labor, unskilled and lack of public policies aimed at promoting the dairy industry also adversely affect the results. The dairy industry in the region proved to be a profitable activity, with levels of profitability appropriate to the region and capable of delivering sustainable development in rural areas.

Abstract:
In this thesis, competitive and cooperative newsboy problems for two substitutable products are analyzed by using game theoretic concepts. The demands of the products are assumed to be dependent and normally distributed. Competition is handled for Nash and Stackelberg games. Nash and Stackelberg games are compared in terms of the order quantities and the expected profits. Cooperative newsboy problem is analyzed for the products having equal costs and revenues. The effect of demand correlation on the order quantities and the expected profits in all of the games is investigated through numerical experiments. Optimal solutions of the Nash, Stackelberg and the cooperative games are examined analytically when the demand correlation is 1.

Abstract:
We investigate the incentive to provide goods of high quality in a vertically related market for different types of business organizations, a farmer-owned cooperative and an investor-owned firm. Contrary to the firm, the cooperative is characterized by decentralized decision making, which gives rise to overproduction and problems coordinating the quality decisions of its members (free riding). Comparing both manufacturers acting as monopolists we show that the cooperative will never supply final goods of higher quality than the firm, and that the problem of quality coordination is mitigated if the cooperative succeeds in preventing overproduction. When a cooperative faces competition of an investor-owned firm (mixed duopoly), it will - except in one limit case - never produce final goods of a higher quality than the firm and will deliver lower quality in a number of scenarios.

Lopez, Carlos Ramiro. "An Exploration of Cooperation during an Asymmetric Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma Game." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2020. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1707264/.

Abstract:
Researchers investigated how the contingent delivery of a cultural consequence on target culturants in an asymmetric iterated prisoner's dilemma game (IPDG) affected players' choices. The asymmetric IPDG creates an analogue to income disparities created by wage gaps and other cultural practices that create wealth inequalities between different members of the population and allows researchers to explore how these inequalities affect cooperation between players. Six undergraduate students divided into three dyads participated in an ABABCDCD reversal design. An asymmetric IPDG was arranged in Condition A and C such that one player received a greater number of points regardless of the second participants' selections - analogue to contingencies that produce income inequalities from wage gaps. In Condition B and D, a metacontingency was arranged such that delivery of a cultural consequence (CC; bonus points equally distributed among the dyad) was contingent on the oscillating production of target aggregate products (AP) across two consecutive cycles. When participants' coordinated responding and contacted the target AP→ CC relation, the wage gap was reduced. However, individual contingencies are in direct competition for the "wealthier" player, reducing the probability of cooperative responding. Results showed the CC selected certain oscillations between target APs resulting in a decrease of a point disparity between the players while also establishing equal points between the players during certain conditions.
