Abstract:
This chapter discusses the issues of designing desirable socioeconomic networks. Such networks permeate our lives. Evidence of this has generated increasing interest in dynamic processes in complex networks, especially the interplay between processes and the influences of network structure on performance and robustness. Performance optimization and robustness are important issues of socioeconomic networks. Diffusion is the process by which new products are invented and successfully introduced into a society (good diffusion) or infectious diseases spread (bad diffusion). Many studies shed light on how network topology interacts with the structure of social networked systems such as financial institutions to determine systemwide crises. In this context, entire classes of optimization problems range from maximizing the diffusion of innovations to minimizing risk distributions and cascade failures. The structure of interconnections influences network performance.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how desi activism reimagines the Indian immigrant location and seeks to mobilize the politics of citizenship around issues of race and class. Using drumnyc.org, the homepage of New York-based organization Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM), as a case study, it foregrounds a particular mode of citizenship among South Asian immigrants wherein belonging and rights are negotiated through technologies of race and immigration and through network cultures. The site represents its immigrant members as active political subjects in the U.S. homeland who craft a cultural location for themselves by engaging, resisting, and responding to the disciplinary strategies of the technologized racial state. In doing so, the activists of DRUM reveal how belonging is produced and enacted through the transnational online media and through immigrant, labor, and racial coalitions. Desi is here articulated to labor struggles, racial alliances, and immigrant collectives to produce desi networks as brown, working-class spaces of political leadership.

Abstract:
This chapter describes how the activity of neurons produces electrical potentials that can be recorded at the levels of single cells, small groups of neurons, and larger neuronal networks. It outlines how the movement of ions across neuronal membranes produces action potentials and synaptic potentials. It considers how the spatial arrangement of specific ion channels on the neuronal surface can produce potentials that can be recorded from the extracellular space. Finally, it outlines how the layered cellular structure of the neocortex can result in summation of signals from many neurons to be large enough to record through the scalp as evoked potentials or the electroencephalogram.
