Full textThis research focuses on the formation of an urban environment and its organisation as a result of social, political and economic struggle in the city of maceio (1800-1930). I see the urban configuration and design as outputs of the process by which the various classes appropriate the social and physical urban fabric at different stages of the history. This document has been organised in three sections. The first one outlines the elements of the brazilian social formation essential for the analysis developed later. The second section analyses the structural changes which eventually led to the emancipation of the province of alagoas, the constitution of the brazilian nation state and, later, the relocation of the provincial government to maceio (1839). Within this analysis are the demographic dynamics, the catholic church's role and the consolidation of the political groups in their struggle for the hegemony after the province's emancipation. The third section presents further research on the production of maceio's urban form in different circumstances

Full textThis thesis discusses the role of public transports in the production of urban space, through the study of three important periods in the recent story of the brazilian city of rio de janeiro. It desmontrates the complexity of the articulation transports/urban growth which evolution depends of geographic, economic, social, cultural and politic factors. The variety of the elements to consider explains that this activity don't present structural and automatic effects. Impacts of the infrastructures depends greatly of the dynamics which affects urban territories. When the interests of the dominant social actors converge to create instruments dedicated to theirs socioeconomic logical, transports got a main role in the production of the city like it happened in the beginning of the century. On the other hand, public transport can lose their strategic position when the social agents develop new strategies adapted at the new mutations of economy and society. Like this, from the fifties, dominant classes don't control more the peripheral growth dominated by illegal settlements and selfconstruction. The most dynamic economic sectors are turning to the middle class which development provides important benefits. In this context, public transportation is losing is "urban function" in aid of a traditional mission of diary mobilization of working class. Since that period, social actors don't more use it to control urban development or to disconcentrate economic activities in a city where the business center concentrate a big part of metropolitan employment. Public transport stills represented an essential activity which progress mark out advanced of civilization, but their role develop according to the relations between the actors which are dominating urban scene. This thesis invalidates the structuring, automatic and absolute effects rhetoric in terms of production of urban territories

Full textThe city is a system said Beaujeu-Garnier. If this assertion is now a form of tautology because the systemic approach is generalized in geographical science, but in its evolution, any system becomes more and more complex. For the city of Djibouti, the complexity is in its infancy. We can see it in the urban structure and geometric tools can help us. The fractal geometry (invented and popularized by Mandelbrot) confirms an idea purely intuitive use of space requires many resources. Correlation is evident between fractal dimension and quality of neighborhoods. On a larger scale, this is the configuration of districts and configuration of the network that are questioned by law constructal. On the other hand, the human dimension is studied with the memetic theory. If, in line memetic, urban production is primarily a mental production, studying the city returned to work the ideas of the inhabitants. So the thesis is shaped as a dialogue between the object of study (the city of Djibouti) and theoretical tools. We’ll make a good diagnosis of the current state of the city and a second time we’ll sketch some ideas for urban development

Full textThis research proposes to study existing interactions between scenic space and madness in contemporary theater. By studying scenography and locations where they occur, we wish to question the use of insanity, not as a theme or dimension of a character, but as a tool to question and renew theatrical space. Madness, a subject of debate whose very existence is regularly questioned, appears for certain directors and/or set designers as a way to radically question illusionist realism and as a pathway to a "theatrical reality" as perceived by Antonin Artaud. These interactions may be exploited by the site chosen for staging but also through the use of madness (hallucination, delirium, dreams) as a disruptive element of scenic space. Madness is then used to disorient the spectator : he is no longer exposed to a representation of his daily life, or a representation of the drama’s setting, or the mental state of a character, but with spaces that offer a perception outside the norms of reason. Madness no longer occurs in the creation of a fable, but in the very structure of theater. Along the lines of certain futurist or surrealist groups’ research, some contemporary staging and scenography therefore tries to do away with dominant reasoning, and view insanity as a means to question political and social order as much as theatrical order

Full textThe growth of the town was not so much dictated by the natural geography of the site, as by the existence of the port which drew the town downstream, and the determination of local dignitaries to contain it within the territorial limits of the commune, the identification of the interests of the town with those of the port results from a gross exaggeration of the role attributed of the latter in terms of its importance on the estuary as well as nationally or even internatio naly. This mythical notion is common to all social groups. It nonetheless allowed the decision-makers to obtain wholehearted support for their plans. Throughout this period the local authorities remained almost identical in composit ion, but the scope of their decision-making, their social makeup and the conception they had of their own role varied greatly. A liberal phase, gave the essential role to private initiative in the genesis of the new urban areas. In the following phase, that of the welfare state, the local authorities were seen to intervene more and more, either directly or through their planning activities. However, throughout this period, the local authorities showed that they were a force to be reckoned with, able to impose their will, on the government for example

Full textThis thesis analyses how the production of space helps to create and sustain alternative organizations. In this study, space is seen as a source of power. In order to answer this question we conduct a single case study: the intermediary places in the French theatre sector. Two organizational models prevail in this sector: the lucrative private sector and the public non-profit one. Intermediary places tend to establish a third model neither private nor public: third sector organizations. We combine semi-structured interviews, observations and secondary data. We show alternative organizations produce different type of individual and collective spaces on multiple scales. Thanks to this combination, intermediary places become mobile and more resistant to dominant space reactions. They are most likely to sustain themselves

Full textThis thesis is based on anthropological research carried out in the south of Peru, among the peasant communities of the Altiplano in the region of Lake Titicaca. It deals with a ritualised mode of producing music in the form of sequences. The notion of the musical sequence is defined through examples of the various rituals from five communities located in the province of Puno, and is then explored in the annual ritual cycle of the Island of Taquile (cf. Parts1 and 2). The sequences are synchronised with the ritual phases and then related to the sacred sphere and worldview of this island community (cf. Part 3). The decoding of spatial markers provides the key to understanding the different visual codes utilised during the festivals, as well as how the sequences are produced. Music and rituals appear to be generated by a matrix linked to the cycle of plant growth, to the dialogue between the world of the living and their ancestors, and to celestial mechanics. This ritual way of musical expression appears to be specific to this region of the world (cf. Part 4)

Full textAbidjan, the economic capital of Cote d'Ivoire, is undergoing a strong demographic pressure. It currently has a population of 4.5 million, which represents about 20% of the national population and 50% of the urban population. This situation induces a continuously rising demand for housing and building land. To address this rising demand after its independence, the state voluntarily engaged in a series of policies to promote housing and building land by creating a number of public sector organizations. In this plan, the state intervened from programming to marketing of the housing and the management of the residential projects. It also ensured the implementation of infrastructure and public social facilities. However, due to the economic crisis of the 1980s, the state relayed those tasks to the private sector and focused its efforts on the promotion of private initiatives by modernizing the financing mechanisms in the housing sector. Since then, the real estate market is witnessing the emergence of several real estate developers exclusively operating in the district of Abidjan. This study helps to establish a better understanding of the formal real estate development private sector’s activities in the agglomeration of Abidjan since the 1980s and their impact on the urban space. It highlights the real estate developments with an emphasis on their spatial, qualitative and quantitative aspects

They may also be associated with skilled craftsmen who "shape" the city by a sensitive, playfulness and imaginary experience of urbanity. Public space is becoming more enjoyable, but above all its open, heterogeneous and dynamic character is simulated. These three activities have a micro-political dimension because they give the opportunity to their participants to live a kind of urban utopia and to unravelling social and territorial orders. However, this work doesn't hide some contradictions that make analysis of the impact of respondents on contemporary public space growing in complexity. If every riders, dancers and street artists contribute to the perpetuation of the "palimpsest city", they do not always write some "renew sentences"

Full textLegacies from the Glorious Thirty still contribute to shape French industrial and logistic port spaces to a large extent, from morphological, economic and institutional point of views. During this period, maritime industrial development areas have been created. There were managed and operated by the state, through dedicated public bodies named ports autonomes. The globalization of the maritime industry and the liberalization of the port sector which started during the 1980s have unsettled this system. These two tendencies have led to the adoption of the "landlord port" management model by main ports worldwide. In this model, port operation is conducted by private enterprises while public port management entities (or port authorities) focus on planning, developing and managing land in the port area. In France, this transition occurred with the port reform of 2008, through which ports autonomes became grands ports maritimes. This PhD research aims at understanding the effects of these changes on port land planning, development and management, through the analysis of the practices of the port authorities of French main seaports. The latter are still under the control of the state, but their autonomy and their competencies have been enlarged. While they traditionally focus on the construction and the maintaining of port infrastructures, their interventions tend to spread in space and to diversify. The trajectory of port space management and development echoes that of other infrastructural spaces (rail or airport spaces). This work contributes to shed light on the continuities and ruptures of state intervention in territorial planning and development in the last decades

Full textIn France, 70 % of the forests is privately owned. The space dynamics in private forests are linked to the way of appropriating the space. The relatinship between nature and society is complex in private forests. The topic of this research is to offer an interpretation ot the space turnover, related to the concepts of production and space appropriation. It should take into account both the social and natural aspects of the private forests. The studied area - the south-west of the french massif central - has been sharply expanding for a century and is 90 % privately-owned. The aim is to identify the logic of actions of the private owners, estimate their impact on the forest, and to analize the representations and conceptions as far as the forest management is concerned. From a metodological wiewpoint, the researches have been carried out in two directions. 1) in order to study the private strategies of owners in their forests, 9 observatories in different natural areas have been chosen to collect bio-ecological and sociological information. 2) in the public debate, the tensions and disagreements about the way of managing the forest which should be applied to the rural space, have been deduced from the analysis of forestry press articles, and also thanks to my attending a training on the forest organized by commissions of private forests. In the studied space, the forest properties are often linked to farm estates and are less than 25 ha. The registred managements programs are very rare : the actions of the owners are little linked to the economy in an uncontrolled forest space. In the public discussion, the opposition between an interest bearing conception of the forest and the environment logic is strong. The production ot the landscapes-to-be in the rural space will depend on the outcome given by the community to the issue on the forest private property

The civil war which burned in 1975 has changed dramatically this point of view. The greater Beirut area faced a dispersion of its former functions. The destruction of Beirut’s down town together with the various events during war time have opened the way to the raise of other urban centers country wide. Full textDuring the past two decades, Luxembourg has emerged as a small, yet highly specialized metropolis with an expanding cross-border functional area. The economic growth has resulted in increasing migration to Luxembourg and a growing pressure on the housing market. According to the literature, the urban processes in metropolitan regions tend to go hand in hand with socio-spatial inequalities. Previous research has, however, paid less attention to cross-border cities. This observation gives rise to the following question: How does the Luxembourg real estate market contend with its unique cross-border context and what are the socioeconomic effects on the residential space? First, we investigate the comparative advantages of urban land regulations and housing price differentials between the four countries. Second, we conduct a survey on the residential choices on each side of the border. Finally, we analyse cross-border residential mobility of workers using discrete choice models and Luxembourg administrative data. Our analysis shows growing socio-spatial inequalities as a result of the economic development of Luxembourg and the related increase in housing prices. The high housing prices function as a barrier for many to live in Luxembourg. This contributes to a more socially polarized space and an extension of the functional area of Luxembourg beyond the border. However, this extension is somewhat limited and influenced by other residential advantages of living in Luxembourg. Finally, even though the EU integration signifies a declining impact of the border as a barrier, the metropolitanization process in this case reinforces the effect of the border as instrument of socio-spatial differentiation

Full textStarting from the definition of any space as a perceptive continuum, and after having introduced the crucial notion of dimension, form is considered as what enables our perception of space, by setting a cut (boundary) in the space of displacements. Conceptual and material operations dealing with forms, operations which are common to mankind as a whole, but are most often performed by geographers and architects, lead to the fondamental concepts of geometry. Yet these concepts, which have effictively governed our conception of space and forfis for centuries, are unhelpful to handle some forms, especially many natural forms. Operations must be replaced by processes, the essential princip les of which are the notions of iteration and attractor. Generative processes yield new concepts, like self-similarity and fractal dimension, which elaborate without contradiction the classical geometrical concepts. Such pro cesses (IFS, L-systems, cellular automata), carriéd out in the digital space, show how simple and deterministic rules may lead to complex and sometimes unpredictable, though specific, forms. They offer new possibilities for analysis and for invention of forms in geography as well as in architecture, and contribute to teach a different way of looking upon space and forms

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze the relationships between urban sprawl and territorialisation, focusing on the crucial issue of metropolitan suburbs governance. In Western Africa large cities, suburbs are involved in complex spatial, socioeconomic, political and managerial transformations, in a context of decentralization. To analyze these transformations as well as the new dynamics of regulation they entail, we have adopted a territorial approach. At the micro scale, we try to understand the dynamics of urban sprawl through the weight of local contexts. At the meso scale of the whole set of suburbs, residential and economic developments are linked to the logics of actors and managerial practices. We try to understand the mechanisms of spatial transformations and their consequences on urban management. At the macro level, we are focusing on Dakar metropolisation. Field surveys have been conducted within three local authorities, Diamniadio, Sangalkam and Yene, in order to study mechanisms, practices and logics of actors. Diamniadio, Sangalkam and Yene have specific local characteristics and, taking into account the major urban sprawl axis, they are located differently. In these three local authorities, processes of differentiation have been observed both at intra and inter territorial scales, which breaks with the former model center-periphery and reflects a new polycentric and multifunctional evolution in the Eastern suburbs

Full textThe main aim of this study on the social production of the meaning of domestic space by the moroccan central high atlas families which run a touristic lodging at home, was double : constructing and trying out a theoretical and methodological process with a view to show the meaning of space processes and content ; and through this meaning of space analysis, showing the local social production dynamic. However, to catch this social dynamic better, this work has searched for a test situation for the social production of the meaning of space. Therefore, it particularly concentrated on the meaning of the domestic space that is produced by the families which run a tourist lodging at home : because they run a tourist lodging at home, these families have been considered having to cope with some conflicting social logics into a limited space ; some of which actualized by running international tourist space, and others of which actualised by the inhabitants' usual house pratices. To answer the geographer's question about the meaning of space, this study refered both to p. Bourdieu's social action theory and g. Balandier's social dynamics analysis. The ground survey notably refered to anthropology's methods. Moreover, this study includes several expositions about the local political dynamic and about the real or possible effects in this field of the local social emergence of the inhabitants working in the tourist industry. It also includes, some remarks about the role of the tourist activity in the local territorial production, according to the categories of local people or local actors

In its first part, it presents the great trends of the geographical distribution of three main types of popular housing (squatter settlements, low income housing and peripheral housing subdivisions) in rio between the sixties and the eighties. The second part features both housing complex historic as well as its residents' demographic and economic characteristics. The third part deals with the local building density process which until now has been deeply linked to endogenous motivations of the owners on making works in their original houses. Afterwards, some scenarios about the future of both housing complex are proposed. An appendix presents the analysis of the graphic information collected according to the initial projects of the houses

Yet in the light of the theatrical architecture, the actors' movements in the acting space, the sets, the costumes, the colours, the lightings, and the materials, other interpretations emerge. Thus, what is seen is guided by the text just as what is read is meaningful thanks to the performance. Firstly this work tackles the phenomenon from a terminological point of view (the semiotics of drama should help us to describe the productions). Secondly the history of Shakespearean creations dating from the beginning of the century is recounted, and a special part is devoted to the work of Edward Gordon Craig who highly influenced the shape of modern staging. The six last chapters of this study deal with contemporary directors' main works: which Shakespearean themes did Peter Brook, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the New Globe Theatre, the Cartoucherie Theatres (at Vincennes), Daniel Mesguich and Stéphane Braunschweig choose to enlighten in their scenographies? Shakespeare's drama seems to be a favoured repertory in scenography and yet is there a textual material conveyed by a visual material which mirrors twentieth-century values? Thanks to a systematic method which is meant to be a model of the analysis of Shakespearean productions, our investigations try to answer those questions

Full text"hortillons" is a group of market gardeners in picardie region. Their fields, named "hortillonnages", are ruled in squares by a network of channels. This lead to the problem of controlling water level : rising or falling of it is still inauspicious for cultivation. The social relation of the group become disorganized with the decrease of the number of its number. The main hortillon's patrimony is landed estate. Two important means are used to get it : the purchase and the inheritance. The goal is to keep patrimony inside the family and to avoid to divide that land. To reach this goal the group practice professional endogamy and recuperation system of goods by purchasing and exchanging between the heirs

Full textOne of the major phenomena in the last twenty years in Africa has been and remains the appearance of outlying districts in cities because of real estate practices. There is a gap between real estate legislation and practice. This study shows on the one hand that there is a cultural logic which allows chiefs to justify the reappropriation of the property of "their ancestors" which had been confiscated by the colonial and postcolonial state. On the other hand, there is a political and institutional logic through which the state, as guarantor of national unity and order, marks its presence by nationalization of property. By this fact, land becomes the "exclusive, inalienable and imprescrptible property" of the state. However, because of the dependence between cultural, political and institutional realities, the state does not have a monopoly on real estate. The conclusion is that on the national level, institutions should be respected and rea estate laws should be fully applied, but that in thier conception the state take into account local realities

Full textThis thesis aims to question the differences between the way in which recreational public spaces are designed and how they are ultimately used by children. The central hypothesis of this study is that the gap in design and use is the result of a normalization process, whereby the recreational city essentially becomes merely another ‘field’ to satisfy regulations. To validate this hypothesis, I study the public space design process and observe how the spaces, both formal (public gardens, playgrounds) and informal (bottom of the building, pavements, abandoned urban places), are ultimately used by children. As children are developing their social and psychomotor skills, they are particularly interesting individuals through which to analyze deviations from the norm. In order to understand the practices of the participating children, an observational study was conducted at two children's leisure centers situated in the Ile-de-France Region: the district Villette-Quatre-Chemins in Aubervilliers (93) and the Grande Borne in Grigny (91). In all, forty-six children participated through mind maps, commented strolls equipped with cameras, using aerial views, as well as individual and group interviews. The reported speeches were confronted with acts by sessions of floating observation in the studied spaces. In order to identify the urban project design process, twenty-one semi-directives interviews were undertaken with project owners (designers and administrators). In addition, an archival survey highlighting the evolution of the projects was also conducted. The survey conducted in Villette-Quatre-Chemins in Aubervilliers, reveals that the transgressive practices of children are a result of unmet needs. Far from being organized in opposition to the current rules, the children assume control of the functional logic and segmentation of the public spaces, enacting a dialogue in accordance to logic and social control. The practices developed therefore constitute a modality of participation in situ in urban planning, which relies on commonly shared rules. However, designers struggle to recognize this silent but active means of expression, revealing one reason for the gap between how and why the space was designed and the way in which it is used. The district of the Grande Borne, an iconic representation of 1970’s design dedicated to the child, composed of public spaces with accessible works of art. The current renovation aims to normalize the space. This raises the question, is the renovation being carried out because the way in which we use the space has evolved, or because we are renovating a historical space? This leads us to analyze the process of project management, which highlights a conflict between managers and designers, concerning issues of heritage and standardization. The redevelopment also provides information on educational issues in the recreational city. The results of this research underlines that far from being anomic, a child’s use of a space is influenced by a dialogue with the norms that are in force. The usage gap, perceived as transgressive by the designers and the administrators, constitutes, in reality, an appropriation and a redeployment of the norm. The principles of normalization of play areas, under the guise of safety for everyone, is the over-infantilization of the child. The logic of repositioning the playground in the public space is then more an update of the mechanism of social control than attention to the needs of the child
