Strapák, P., J. Candrák, and J. Aumann. "Relationship between longevity and selected production, reproduction and type traits." Czech Journal of Animal Science 50, No. 1 (December 5, 2011): 1–6. http://dx.doi.org/10.17221/3989-cjas.

Full text
Abstract:
The correlations between longevity, functional longevity, stayability and selected milk, reproductive and type traits were estimated; it was done on the basis of estimated breeding values for longevity, functional longevity, dairy traits, reproductive traits and stayability rates at the age of 60, 72, 84, and 96 months. The correlation between breeding values for longevity and functional longevity was 0.69. The correlations between longevity and stayability at 60, 72, 84, and 96 months of age were around 0.75 (from 0.73 to 0.76) whereas the correlation with stayability at 48 months was considerably lower (0.64). The breeding values for dairy traits showed a positive relationship with longevity (from 0.37 to 0.46) and a slightly negative correlation with breeding values for functional longevity (from –0.10 to –0.20). A low relationship was found between longevity and reproductive traits. Between the type traits and longevity traits only the conformation score for the form (0.18) and for the udder showed a positive correlation (0.24). The correlation between the form and functional longevity remained approximately on the same level whereas the correlation with the main udder score decreased to 0.08, which indicated a positive relationship between milk traits and udder scores.

Abstract:
This special issue introduces new work, new perspectives, and engages in a dialogue to revisit, extend and go beyond the original central hypothesis of Power, Production and Social Reproduction (2003). That volume and its primary hypothesis focused upon the unfolding contradiction between the global accumulation of capital and the provision of stable and progressive conditions of social reproduction. It hypothesized a growing contradiction between the intensified power of capital and many life-making/sustaining processes, including the condition of bodies and the biosphere. Our original hypothesis conceptualized capital accumulation and social reproduction as interlinked although within different and contradictory moments in the same system or totality. We add to this here the concept of variegated social reproduction which refers to the historical and ontological variability of social reproduction - and its specific differentiations and varieties in contemporary globalized capitalism - stemming from concrete social, cultural, ecological and material practices and structures. Indeed, as the articles in the special issue reflect, the neoliberalization and commodification of social reproduction remains incomplete and not all-encompassing or determinant. As such, the introduction and the special issue also suggest new research agendas.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the paper was to analyse the effect of the level of milk yield and breeding value on reproduction of Czech pied cows. In the study of cows that calved in the period 1999–2001 the results for 41 357 cows from the central database were used analytically. The study was focused on the following traits: breeding value of the father of the cow for kg of milk, breeding value of the mother of the cow for kg of milk, the cow’s milk yield in the 1st to the 3rd lactation, and reproduction traits after the 1st and 2nd calving. To determine the effect of the breeding value of the father or mother of the cow on reproduction traits of daughters the test cows were divided into 3 groups depending on the BV of the parents. The results were processed by multifactor analysis of variance using the CORR and GLM procedures of the SAS statistical program, v. 8.1., and the model with fixed effects for the calculation itself. The results of the study show a negative correlation between the level of the milk yield of cows and their reproduction. It may be stated that the increased milk yield decreases reproduction traits characterised by the extension of days open and calving interval. The estimated correlation between the milk yield and the days open was r = 0.38 for milk yield, r = 0.32 for fat yield, and r = 0.25 for protein yield. A similar correlation between the level of milk yield and the days open was also found in other calving intervals.

Abstract:
Contemporary social and political theorists generally recognise that Marx and Engels’ critical analysis of capitalist society centres on the production of value through the production of things. However, what is often unrecognised in considerations of Marx and Engels is how their analysis is based on the interrelation of production and reproduction. Nevertheless, the implications of this interrelation for feminist critique are explored in the writings of Marx and Engels only tangentially. These implications are developed from Marx’s analysis by Leopoldina Fortunati and Silvia Federici into a singular synthesis of the Marxist and feminist modes of critique. This development deserves greater recognition, and this essay will seek to articulate how the social implications of this interrelation (1) are expressed to a limited extent in the classical texts of Marxism and (2) are developed by Fortunati and Federici into the analytic framework of social reproduction as the core of Marxist-feminist revolutionary struggle.

Abstract:
The covariance structure was estimated by REML for a joint genetic evaluation of production and reproduction traits for Czech Landrace (58 258 records) and Czech Large White (167 161 records) pigs using four-trait animal models. The following traits were analysed: lean mean percentage at the end of the performance test in the field, estimated from ultrasonic measurements unadjusted for live weight (LM), average daily gain in field test (in g/day) calculated as weight at the end of the test divided by age at the end of the test (ADG), number of piglets born alive in parity 1 (NBA1) and number of piglets born alive in parity 2 and subsequent parities (NBA2+). The heritabilities were in the range from 0.30 to 0.37 for LM, from 0.13 to 0.18 for ADG, from 0.09 to 0.13 for NBA1 and from 0.10 to 0.14 for NBA2+, depending on the breed and on the model (herd-year-season random or fixed). Genetic correlations between production and reproduction traits were estimated to be non-zero. Correlations between traits caused by the herd-year-season effect were mostly positive. As a general conclusion, the joint genetic evaluation of production and reproduction traits is recommended. The herd-year-season effect should be preferably considered as random.

Abstract:
In Northern Canada, Indigenous mixed economies persist alongside and in resistance to capital accumulation. The day-to-day sites and processes of colonial struggle, and, in particular, their gendered nature, are too often ignored. This piece takes an anti-colonial materialist approach to the multiple labours of Indigenous women in Canada, arguing that their social-reproductive labour is a primary site of struggle: a site of violent capitalist accumulation and persistent decolonising resistance. In making this argument, this piece draws on social-reproduction feminism, and anti-racist, Indigenous and anti-colonial feminism, asking what it means to take an anti-colonial approach to social-reproduction feminism. It presents an expanded conception of production that encompasses not just the dialectic of capitalist production and reproduction, but also non-capitalist, subsistence production. An anti-colonial approach to social-reproduction feminism challenges one to think through questions of non-capitalist labour and the way different forms of labour persist relationally, reproducing and resisting capitalist modes of production.

Abstract:
The overall trend of the reproduction performance is a reduction since at least 20 years. In Belgium, the pregnancy rate at artificial insemination decreases about 1% per year (Opsomer et al, 2006). To obtain good reproduction performance, many requisite factors are necessary. Health status, nutritional status or production level are some well-known examples. Many studies review these factors and their impact on the reproduction performance. The aim of this work was to describe the impact of health status, production and management on the reproduction performance in Walloon farms.

Abstract:
Nanjing Yunjin was included in “the first batch of non-material cultural heritage list in China” in 2006, and the city was also selected as “a list of representatives of human intangible cultural heritage” by the United Nations in September 2009. Nanjing Yunjin is now a scarce tourism resource on the verge of extinction. Carrying out effective cultural tourism development and production, and informing consumers about its cultural connotation are problems worth studying. This study aims to explore and analyze the cultural reproduction process of Nanjing Yunjin in the cultural tourism production-consumption closed-cycle model. Based on the review, the study introduces word cloud tools and explores the cultural production links of heritage by means of narrative analysis, applies quantitative methods to verify the relationship among production, consumption, and reproduction, and finally, constructs the production-consumption impact model of Nanjing Yunjin cultural tourism. Results indicate that the cultural tourism production of Nanjing Yunjin has a significant positive impact on cultural tourism consumption, which, in turn, positively affects cultural reproduction. In addition, cultural tourism production has a significant impact on its cultural reproduction part, and consumption plays a mediating role in the impact of cultural tourism production on its reproduction.

Abstract:
This article offers a critical genealogy of the dominant imaginaries through which social reproduction, particularly in relation to capitalist production, has been examined in key feminist literatures since the 1960s. Feminist scholars have long observed that the distinction between production and social reproduction in capitalist societies manifests as an opposition between ‘work’ and ‘home,’ but they have implicitly envisioned and interpreted that opposition in diverse ways that crucially connect with geography. We offer this analysis in order to clarify how different imaginaries embedded in and shaping approaches to social reproduction both illuminate and occlude the social reproduction-production nexus. Although this critical genealogy leaves us better prepared to address conceptual shortcomings within different understandings of this nexus, we still lack an approach that grasps the complex workings of this interface in a moment of rising precarité across the globe.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify nursing scientific output related to Family Planning and Reproductive Rights. Methods: the Virtual Health Library (VHL) bibliography database was researched: International Literature in Health Sciences (MEDLINE), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Nursing Database (BDENF). Publications related to family planning themes, reproductive rights and nursing, classified as scientific articles and published in the 2000-2008 period nationwide were selected. Data collection was performed in October 2008. Results: twenty-three articles were selected. It was found that nursing articles on family planning and reproductive rights encompassing four areas (expertise and professional practice related to Family Planning, use of contraceptive methods, health education in Family Planning, and gender and Family Planning) have been published since 2000. Conclusion: it was concluded that nursing has seeked to participate in the family planning and reproductive rights fields; however, further advances as to technical qualification towards discussions which can go beyond a controlling discourse in this area need to be implemented. Descriptors: nursing; family planning (public health); reproductive rights. Abstract:
This article examines the physical price system of Piero Sraffa. Sraffa’s system is presented as a physical model of production, which provides an internally consistent and so logically superior alternative to Marx’s allegedly inconsistent labour theory of value. This article does not contest the internal consistency of Sraffa’s logic but demonstrates that its logic contradicts every actual process of production. Production, defined as the human labour process that transforms one set of physical inputs into a different set of physical outputs, is a process of physical change by definition, which in capitalist production means that outputs are physically incommensurate to, or different from, inputs. This article focuses on several key issues; commensurability, the standard commodity or physical numeraire; the relation between Sraffian and Leontief’s production matrix, including Quesnay’s Tableau Économique; and the production of surplus. It finds that Sraffa’s physical price system is not a model of production at all, it is a mathematically correct model of nothing. It is reproduction without production.

Abstract:
Regardless of the final fitting of the Anthropocene in the Geologic Time Scale, conceptualizing the Anthropocene as a human-induced ecological crisis of planetary scale linked to the capitalist mode of production allows addressing the research on the deep roots of such crisis into the fundamentals of this production mode. In this regard, a Marxian dialectical approach is pertinent to face some of the major challenges launched by the Anthropocene narrative. In particular, understanding capital as the automatic fetish that commands social production and reproduction in modern society allows not falling into mystified techno-scientific solutions for the crisis. Capital as the automatic fetish that mediates in the universal metabolism between humans and nature yields an alienated form of social metabolism that is at the base of the metabolic rift inherent to the production and reproduction of capital and that is enhanced by the tendency of the rate of profit to fall.
