Master's thesis, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2018. http://tesis.pucp.edu.pe/repositorio/handle/123456789/12629.
Full textMango has been recognized worldwide as one of the most valued tropical fruits, reflecting the progressive growth of its demand in recent years, with the Piura Region being the main exponent of this growth, giving it a predominant role at the national level, not only for its important growth trend, but also because its development contributes to the economic and social growth of the country. Although the Piura Region presents competitive and comparative advantages for the development of the mango sector thanks to its fertile soils, variety of climates, its geographical characteristics and its commercial window; these advantages are overshadowed by internal weaknesses in the sector, such as the lack of investment in infrastructure and technology, as well as the low level of association among mango producers. The present work develops the strategic planning of the Mango Sector of the Piura Region, for which an external, internal, and competitive analysis of mango in the region has been carried out, making it possible to establish long-term objectives and strategies that must be implemented to consolidate Piura as the main mango producing and exporting region from Peru, to the year 2022. The importance of this work lies in the fact that the activity of the sector is concentrated in the rural areas of Piura, where the largest proportion of the region's poverty is gathered, therefore, the present work seeks to generate an impulse in the progressive growth in the quality of life of the producers, the creation of new and better jobs and in the increase of the income for the Piura Region.

Full textThe agro-export sector is experiencing in recent years a significant growth trend, mainly due to increased global demand as a result of new consumer preferences that generate great business opportunities for Peru, particularly in the Lambayeque region. In 2011, the most important markets are demanding food that is healthy, natural and of good quality, such as fruits and vegetables. The mango is being recognized as one of the most valuable tropical fruits worldwide, this is reflected in its growing demand. In the same fashion, Peru has had a progressive growth of the cultivated area and the level of exports, with the Piura region being the main example of this growth. Moreover, Peru has competitive and comparative advantages for the development of the mango sector, such as the commercial opening, the variety of climates, and its higher level of productivity that allows it to offer a quality product, however, it has not been able to take advantage of these strengths due to a significant fragmentation of the agriculture in general, as well as a low level of collaboration among producers. It should be noted that a percentage greater than 90% of the mango exports from Peru is sold to markets in Europe and the U.S., where it competes with major exporters like Mexico and Brazil, which decreases mango prices worldwide. To counter this, new markets are being introduced with better trading conditions that can be fulfilled. The Lambayeque region has geographical and climatic characteristics very conducive to making agriculture one of the main production activities that promote the creation of direct and indirect employment, however, these capabilities have not generated a stage of development in the same magnitude as Piura, nationally, or Mexico and Brazil, internationally. This thesis develops the Strategic Plan for the mango in the Lambayeque region, and is a valuable management tool where the critical factors for the development of mango are identified, which are related to increased exports, strict phytosanitary control, technological improvements, optimal development of the harvest phase, cultivation and marketing of mango, improved partnerships among producers, and integration of the entire chain, including the participation of the regional government and the related government entities. To do this, we establish long-term goals and strategies that shall be implemented to achieve the desired future.

Full textThe main objective of this research is to develop a Strategic Plan for the Peruvian agricultural fresh fruit and vegetables exporting Sector, given the enormous potential it possesses to become one of the world’s main exporters of such products. The development of this Plan benefits from the enormous advantage bestowed upon this activity by the range of geographic zones that exist within Peru, as well as the country’s strategic geographic location. Also of importance is the considerable commercial support provided by the free trade agreements Peru has signed, and the success of Marca Perú [“Brand Peru”], which has achieved worldwide recognition. In this research work we analyzed internal and external factors, and this enabled us to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that led to our establishing a series of strategies designed to achieve the proposed Vision. The long term objectives formulated were designed to achieve economic growth, hand-in-hand with the technological innovation that will allow us to develop sustainably. Considering the fact that Peru has been experiencing FOB growth in excess of 20%, we believe that with an appropriate policy for the promotion of agricultural exports Peru could become one of the world’s leading exporting countries. As part of the project, we considered the development of this sector and the possibilities for sustainable growth in non-traditional products, such as organic produce, blueberries, onions and other crops with the potential to contribute to increased exports, that will help improve the socioeconomic conditions of all those who form part of the value chain.

Full textGlobally, the main mango producers are India and China, followed by Thailand and Indonesia, while in Latin America, Mexico stands out as the world's 8th largest producer and the first exporter to the United States. On the other hand, Peru is located in the 18th place, cultivating different varieties of mangoes, among which are grafted or improved, such as Hade, Kent and Tommy Atkins that have international demand and are therefore exported. The demand for this fruit is growing and the Peruvian Mango Industry should take this opportunity to position itself among the world's two leading exporters, supplying various markets such as South Korea, Japan and China, as well as the markets currently served, which are Holland and the United States. By the year 2027, the aim is to lead exports in monetary terms, which will increase the volume of production and employment, as well as the yield per hectare through training and the use of state-of-the-art technology, especially in irrigation. All this will lead the Peruvian Mango Industry to see its profitability increase, benefiting both large companies and traditional producers. This will be achieved by implementing strategies that have been extensively discussed in this document, such as: (a) developing the US market for processed foods; (b) penetrate Asian markets with fresh mango; (c) developing organic mango crops; (d) integrate vertically with retailers and wholesalers to encourage the consumption of Peruvian mango in the national market; (e) vertically integrated forward, so that each farmer association or cooperative has its own marketing unit to reduce the number of intermediaries and increase profitability; and (f) horizontally integrate all small mango producers into associations that allow them access to financing, technology and markets

The Mango has become the most valued tropical fruit for its nutritional benefits and organoleptic characteristics, creating business opportunities due to the global demand increase for the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Within this context, Peruvian Mango exports have been increasing in the last years benefiting Peruvian producers and exporters as well as the competing countries. Peru represents comparative advantages such as fertile land, varied climate and geographic location; likewise, the Peruvian Mango has competitive advantages such excellent product quality and organoleptic properties. In the external analysis it can be mentioned that Peru represents political stability and that it leads the economic growth in the region, which favors the Peruvian Mango value chain. However, from the internal analysis it is required to improve the partnership between producers and exporters, increase the access to financing, expand export supply, promote the implementation of international quality certifications, implement training programs and to increase domestic consumption. On the other hand, the main markets of the Peruvian Mango are the U.S.A. and Europe, being the main suppliers of these Mexico and Brazil, respectively. In that sense, it is required market penetration, products diversify and market development in Asia, taking advantage of the consumers’ preference for Mango. The present thesis describes the Strategic Planning of Mango in Peru, developing the external, internal and competitive analyses of mango in order to propose strategies, objectives and policies that will lead to the desired vision and turn Peru into the third mango exporter worldwide in the year 2023, being in 2013 the sixth global exporter

The Peruvian mango has registered in recent years a dynamic growth in exports 15.8% in annual average between 2002 and 2013. The factors that have influenced this positive trend are: (a) the growing concern about healthy nutrition, (b) the positioning of Peruvian mango as a product that meets the international quality standards, and (c) the signing of free trade agreements, have promoted arrival in important foreign markets. Between 2011 and 2013, Peru was ranked between the fourth and sixth mango exporter in the world. The main markets for Peruvian mango export are Netherlands and the United States. In these markets the main competitors are Mexico and Brazil. These countries have advantages as extensions of cultivated areas, proximity to destination countries and permanent industrial and commercial development of the sector. Despite this Peru in recent years has positioned outstandingly this tropical fruit and is entering into new markets. The main problem of the sector is the presence of several middlemen for both the local market mainly and for foreign. This situation and the weak business management skills of Peruvian farmer generate a reduced profitability and capacity to insert into the growing export dynamics. Because of this, the result of the strategic plan is to incorporate the farmer in the value chain of medium and large exporting company through: (a) the implementation of best practices in agriculture, (b) generating synergies between farmers to help strengthen their commercial response capacity, and (c) establishment of an association that enhances the development of the sector.

Full textIn the macroeconomic level, it turns out to be clearer that the business initiative is one of the keys to the dynamics y creation of jobs. The forthcoming of new business plans generates the necessary impulse to job efficiency in terms of resources, by elevating the level of competence in the market of products, accelerating the process de creation, diffusion and application of technological and organizational innovations. The peruvian Amazon has great potential for bioindustry, while at the same time, the growing openness and globalization of the different markets gives that one a great opportunity to develop with a sustainability approach, due to the bioindustrial activities that go after economic, social and ecological rentability, that involve the improvement of the quality of life of the population, the responsibility of the actors on the ecosystem’s preservation, social cohesion and the search for market niches in the frame of globalized economy. The development of native products and generally of organic nature it is a topic of cardinal importance for the development of sectors generally of low resources and rural; to improve the quality of life of the persons with coherent strategies that involve the preservation of the biodiversity, benefiting the population of the zone, in the measure that I achieved to add value to his biological resources and to generate competitive dynamic advantages with an approach of sustainability, is one of the aims of this business plan. The aguaje (Mauritia Flexuosa L. f.) it is one of these Amazonian fruits, known at present only for his not industrial use in ice creams and some other presentations, or as fruit. The offer of this business plan is innovative; since it raises the possibility of taking advantage of the flesh of the lyophilized fruit, as industrial input for the obtaining betacarotene, this due to the high concentration of vitamin A which is in the flesh. The world demand of betacarotene is increasing and increasingly there are looked natural organic sources of supply of preference. The business plan demonstrates the feasibility of this project.

Full textA technological watch is applied to the exportable supply of Peruvian sacha inchi products in order to identify opportunities that Peru can take advantage of to improve its product offer and the detection of threats that may affect its current and favorable positioning in international markets. To perform the technological surveillance, the method proposed by Fernández et al. (2009) was used. This is based on the processes of selective dissemination of information used by professionals in information science in academic or specialized libraries. The results revealed threats to the production of Peruvian sacha inchi as the low impact of Peruvian scientific production in generating a competitive advantage for the development of new export products, especially against China and other countries in the region such as Brazil and Colombia. It also identified the limited use of intellectual protection tools, such as patents and registered trademarks that, rather, are used by other countries such as Canada, the United States, China, and other Asian countries to ensure the commercialization of their innovative products in the most important markets of the world.

Two main varieties of lemon cultivated in Peru are Limón Sutil and Limón Tahiti. These have very distinctive features which, historically speaking, have highly impulsed domestic market; however, this tendency may show a sudden variation due to the worldwide growing interest in Peruvian gastronomy and the promotion of national drinks; such as the Pisco Sour. The current strategic plan is focused on the development of Lemon Industry in Peru towards 2023. This plan mainly aims to increase the percentage of the fruit’s domestic consumption in 50% compared to 2013, and place its market among the five main Latin American exporters of this citric fruit. In the last years, Peru has gained prestige for its wide range of natural resources, a high educational demand, political stability, increasing interest for social responsibility and sustainability, as well as a growing economy. However, the domestic consumption of lemon has shown to be hindered and the number of hectares destined for the production of it has shown a decreasing tendency in the last decades. In spite of this, the lemon industry will soon be supported by the Governmental boost towards the development of PPPs (public-private partnerships) aiming to improve irrigation and infrastructure processes that support the growth of agro-exports. The model used on the elaboration of this strategic plan for 2023 has been developed by Professor Fernando D’Alessio. The process gives way to the identification of strategies to be used as an action plan; 8 retained ownership and 9 contingency strategies, which ensure the implementation of long-term well-defined objectives and aim to keep balance among the development of domestic demand, exports boost with the help of new international trade agreements, and the generation of economic and social development for regions that cultivate and export their natural resources responsibly

The main purpose of the Artichoke strategic plan is to establish the strategies that allow it to encourage its development and lead Peru to be acknowledged as the second exporting country worldwide, thus contributing to the economic development and following the policies governing the protection, environmental care and wellness of the society. Additionally, the high prices paid in the international market for the Artichoke are an additional plus seeing that this product is traded as canned foods due to the high demand mainly in the United States and some European countries such as Spain and France, while maintaining an increasing pace due to its nutritional properties acknowledgement. As a result of the external and internal evaluation of the Artichoke, this document shows 30 factors, that will be the input to define a set of strategies, policies, short-tem goals, long-term goals and strategic assessment metrics that lead to the vision of the Artichoke for 2023

Full textWhen we hear about the fishing industry all Peruvians are proud, because we know that Peru is one of the countries with great biodiversity and quality of marine species. In addition, this sector is considered one of the main pillars of the Peruvian economy. However, if we look at the export figures worldwide we note that Peru does not lead the ranking, the same happens in South America, where it is Ecuador who leads us. This deeply calls our attention and we question why not be located in one of the first places in South America, if our country has a wide variety of marine species and their derivatives. So, this research focus in to analyze comparatively the causes that generated positive effects in the level of exports from the fishing sector of Ecuador and Peru to Spain. At the same time, it is intended to demonstrate that foreign direct investment and international logistics have positively influenced the level of exports of Ecuadorian companies to the Spanish market, compared to Peruvian companies in the period 2012-2016. For the development of the present investigation, it will begin with a brief description of the sector studied and internationalization strategies. Likewise, the points of the methodology used for the study will be detailed, continuing with the development, a description will be made of the main causes that positively boosted Ecuador's exports in the Spanish market. Finally, the conclusions and recommendations of the present investigation will be specified.

Full textThis research was carried out to analyze the impact of preferential rates with China, the United States and the European Union, on Peruvian agro-industrial exports (non-traditional) in the period 1994-2019. Consequently, the methodology proposed by Cardamone (2007) is used, which uses the gravity equation for a disaggregated analysis based on some products. In this case, 5 products are analyzed, taking advantage of the data disaggregated to 10 digits of the harmonized system (HS0), which belong to the national subheading level. The mentioned products maintain a high export growth. Likewise, the estimation procedure of Santos Silva and Tenreyro (2006) will be applied: Pseudo Poisson Maximum Likelihood (PPML) regression. One of the main conclusions stands out that the reduction of preferential rates generates positive effects, which motivate the increase in exports in the non-traditional agricultural sector. In this case, in the main export products: grapes, asparagus, blueberries, mangoes and avocados. Likewise, it has been found, based on the stylized facts, that there is a representative increase in exports in the subheading of cranberries since 2013, which coincides with the entry into force of the FTA with the European Union. Also, there is a record of increase in exports, in the three main export destinations, of the product subheadings: grapes and asparagus. In this sense, the idea is maintained that trade agreements contribute to an increase in trade flow (OMC 2015).

Full textThis research examines the effect of the real exchange rate volatility on non-traditional agricultural exports in Peru in the absence of a universal consensus on this issue, be it due to the type of economy, sector and among other characteristics. The study used monthly time series data for the period 2003 to 2019, based on information sources collected by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) and the United States Federal Reserve System (FED). The research used the GARCH model to determine the presence of volatility in the series of the multilateral real exchange rate. The analytical methods used were Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) to demonstrate the stability of the parameters and later, for the analysis of dynamic relationships both in the short and long term, the Autoregressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) model was used. In addition to using some control variables to estimate the proposed models. The results concluded that the real exchange rate volatility had a positive impact on non-traditional agricultural exports in the short term in Peru. While, in the long term, there was no incidence of the real exchange rate volatility on these non-traditional agricultural exports.
