Full textCompetition in the market of interior design during the last several years has drastically increased. The consumers of today are very conscious about what the market can offer and therefore they have high demands on the products. It is not only the function of the product that matters but also the design that makes a difference. Companies are becoming more aware of this and as a result they have to find a way to set themselves apart in order to attract customers. This realization has led designers and economists to cooperate in a different way than before. It is important that they are able to communicate with each other to reach a successful goal.
The purpose of this study is to deeply analyze a product development process within a large departement store and to look into how the different parts cooperate and communicate with each other. The exam has been done through a qualitative method. Three personal interviews where held within the departement store with the design director, purchaser staff and designer. The theories of communication, design process as well as the value theory aim to serve as tools in the analysis of the evaluation problem. The study focused on cooperation, communication and feedback in the product development process.
The conclusion we came to is that there is a conflict in communication between the purchasing staff and designers to company X because the communication has only been one way. The designer believes that communication is inadequate because it is not sufficiently structured and collaborative. The designer would like more feedback to be given. Having shared communication where the parties exchange ideas and being able to understand each other provides a more effective communication which can influence the collaboration between them in a positive way. Our conclusion is that feedback is a very important factor in communication and cooperation between the parties. Work in the product development process would be even more effective if they would make use of project planning.

Full textLean is a concept which has influenced the modern industry during the last few decades and is something many companies strive to practice. However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding how lean can be applied during product development, how methods are used and the roll of communication in lean organizations. This study aims to investigate product development in manufacturing companies who apply lean thinking to examine what methods they use in this early process. Furthermore, the study looks into the role of communication within lean organized organizations and its impact on the application of lean methods. The study is partly based on a literature review with the purpose of improving current knowledge about lean thinking regarding both production and product development while retaining a critical approach to the subject. The literature review focuses on scientific articles and previously performed studies to find out which methods are used, why they are used and when they are used. The study is also partially based on an empirical study in the format of semi-structured interviews with six respondents from three different companies. All three companies apply lean thinking in their organization and interviews were held with one employee from production and one employee from product development at each company. The information gathered from the empirical study has then been compared to the information learned from the literature review and consequently analyzed and discussed. The results reveal that lean thinking differs in theory and practice in several aspects, partly because of the companies different interpretations of lean. The results also disclosed that all three companies actively and, in some cases, unknowingly applied lean methods in their product development which helped pave the way for effective lean production. An imperative factor for successfully achieving a lean organization proved to be the communication between departments. Deficient communication might result in products which cannot be effectively produced with the production departments current layout. Additionally, the results reveal that the companies sometimes consciously choose to not apply lean methods as the resource-efficient approach of lean may have a negative effect on innovation and knowledge gain.

Full textIn today's society, it is inevitable that the need for users' inputs are increasingly utilized by companies. Understanding the users' needs and wishes is at the center of being able to develop products that are well adapted to the users. Research on different methods is available in many different business areas as there are several examples of its profitability. Ski equipment is generally defined by its features, usability, durability and performance, therefore is its development largely governed by technology. The origin and purpose of this study is to investigate how the users are involved in the ski manufacturing business area. This study explores different methods for user involvement and seeks to understand how different degrees of user involvement are used in practice relative to the literature. This study further analyzes how different ski companies in the Nordic countries integrate users into their product development process and investigates its advantages, disadvantages and consequences. A literature study was conducted to develop a theoretical reference framework composed by various theories that had previously been researched. Thereafter, four different ski companies who produce alpine skis in the Nordic countries were interviewed based on an interview guide that had been developed to answer the research questions. Subsequently, the interviews were transcribed, keywords were traced, six themes were developed and studied in more detail. These themes are; the product developments phases, benefits, challenges, choice of user for the development process, choice of method for user involvement and degree of user involvement. All the companies' similarities and differences were analyzed within the six themes and conclusions were drawn under all of the themes. This study displayed that prototype testing is important for the product development process and is used by all interviewed companies. In addition to prototype testing, users could be involved in more ways and to greater extents. The interviewed companies showed similarities when users were involved in prototype testings but in retrospect, differences in choice of methods and degree of user involvement was immensely varied between the companies. All the companies felt that they involved the users as much as they thought fit and was possible for the product to develop. However, when the companies were compared to each other, it turned out that the degree of user involvement varied greatly. Parallels between the companies' success and degree of user involvement are speculated but no clear conclusions could be drawn.

Full textThe competition in the market is getting far more resilient, hence, the customer perspective becomes an increasingly important success factor. The purpose of this report is, therefore, to investigate and immerse the understanding of how companies in the home appliance industry implement customer involvement in the different phases of the product development process. In addition, an understanding of how customer involvement will affect the company and how they use and spread the knowledge from these implementations will be created. The research questions were answered through an in-depth literature study to create a theoretical framework and therefore gain an understanding of prevailing theories and methods used in customer involvement. This was subsequently compared with a semi-structured interview study in which customer involvement in the home appliances industry was investigated. The respondents who participated in the interview study worked at Electrolux, an international company in the home appliance industry. The study shows that there are different opinions about customer involvement regarding the phases in which the consumer should be involved in the process and to what extent the integration should take place. The results of this research indicate that the methods used to integrate users in the product development process are mainly for informational purposes, to create an understanding and knowledge of the consumer's use of the product. This knowledge could later on can be used by the product developers. Involving consumers in the process was considered to have positive effects, however there were some difficulties that were important to take into account in order to achieve a desired and useful result. The study also shows that cross-functional teams could contribute to easier communication and information management since many different functions are involved throughout the product development process.

Full textRecently, circular economy (CE) has made a breakthrough in the market and in society. Previous, linear models have been successful in various industries. Linear models have led to raw material ending up being disposed. To address this problem, it is important to have a better understanding of materials and resources, which is the basis of CE. Since, circular furniture flows (CM) is a part of CE, furniture companies have chosen to integrate circularity in product development. The aim with CM is to achieve a closed loop of materials and avoid landfill for furniture. Which can be achieved through different methods and ways of working. This work aims to study how furniture companies integrate the principles of CM. Especially, with focus on material selection and design principles in the product development process. The study also addresses finding out various factors that can be regarded as enabling and/or limiting to a CM. The study was initiated by conducting a literature study to gain an increased understanding of CM. Thereafter, a qualitative interview survey was conducted by four respondents from four different companies. Finally, the results of the study show that it is important to raise awareness about CM among consumers and the society. Due to that the subject is relatively new and complex. The increased focus on circularity has changed which actors that work together, therefore collaboration is important. However, a challenge for CM is material selection, there is a need to ensure how various materials stand from a circular perspective. To find new solutions to existing obstacles it is necessary to think in new ways.

Full textBackground: Today, we humans are flooded with new products at the same time as today's people have become richer, which has made it possible to increase consumption behavior. Good says the company, bad says the environment? The threats posed by climate change have hardly escaped anyone. Research shows that there is a greater demand for sustainable products today than there has been in the past, driven by the fact that we humans are aware of the effects we have on the climate. This demand places demands on companies to develop sustainable products. Integrating sustainability into product development is, according to research, a relatively unstudied process. Previous research believes that the process is unique to companies as companies act according to different principles and that the products differ. At the same time, there should be some similarities. Therefore, this study shows that there are incentives to study how Swedish manufacturing companies integrate sustainability into their product development. Problem: One of the obvious problems with studying the integration of sustainability in the product development process is that sustainability is a concept with many definitions. To understand how the company integrates sustainability into the product development process, we should also understand why companies develop sustainable products, what driving forces influence these decisions. There are plenty of integration methods that companies can use, which is of interest to study, however, previous research shows that the methods themselves do not lead to sustainable product development but rather a combined effect of methods and influencing factors. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to map whether, how and why Swedish manufacturing companies integrate sustainability into their product development process. We intend to study the driving forces behind the decision to develop sustainability strategies and the factors that influence the integration of sustainability. We also aim to look at differences and similarities between the sizes of companies. Method: This study has been done quantitatively with a deductive research approach. A web-based survey has been used to investigate how Swedish manufacturing companies integrate sustainability into the product development process. Mean values, Pearson's correlation analysis and chi-square test have been used to analyze results and test hypotheses. Conclusion: All studied factors were shown to influence companies' ability to integrate sustainability into product development, however, to varying degrees. It can also be said that how companies do depend on the size of the company as many significant differences were identified. These differences were demonstrated in both driving forces, factors, and integrations methods.

Full textThe natural resources of planet Earth are diminishing at an increasing rate, and the fashion industry is by several measures one of the most resource demanding and polluting. It is at the same time an industry with a big impact on media and clothes are consumed by everyone. Apparel manufacturing and sales can be done in several ways, but the companies in this study design and specify their own clothes, but produce them abroad, usually in low wage countries. The main company has a responsibility to design and specify their apparel in a sustainable way, but also to choose responsible sub contractors and to make sure the sustainability efforts are traceable. This work aims to deliver an insight to how a focus on sustainability can affect the product development process of a fashion company, and how the sustainability efforts can be reviewed, reported and followed up. To answer those questions a literature review was conducted, resulting in a theoretical framework that was compared with practice at two fashion companies through qualitative interviews. The interviews were semi structured, and decoded, analyzed and compared in the result section. After the decoding, eight areas that both companies included in their sustainability efforts were chosen; • Sustainability is included early in the product development phase • Sustainability isn’t the most important aspect when purchasing clothes • The company management values sustainability • The influence on sub contractors increase with greater volumes • Lists and certifications are used • Greenwashing is to be avoided • Waste and unnecessary consumption is to be minimized • The sustainability goals are followed up The study shows that the companies use a lot of the methods suggested by the literature to implement circular economy, but that none of the companies use that expression. The product development process is front-loaded with clear goals, active management and with a systems based approach for the whole life cycle of the product. The lack of clear industry standards for what sustainable really means and how to measure it is apparent - both companies use external, non governmental organizations for their certifications, and are wary not to overuse the word sustainability or be accused of greenwashing. Even though none of the companies in the study accomplish a circular economy, they are both active and involved with sustainability. By using a systems based approach and looking at everything from crop to usage, they can influence all phases of the life cycle.
