Abstract This segment of history aims to inform the new, and remind the not-so-new, members of the profession about the relatively recent period that initiated the dominant role played by technological innovation in the modern investigation of disease. The 12 years from 1948 to 1960 were notable for introduction of the Vacutainer tube, electrophoresis, radioimmunoassay, and the AutoAnalyzer. Also appearing during this interval were new organizations, publications, programs, and services that established a firm foundation for the professional status of clinical chemists. It was a golden age.

Abstract:
This study on the life of men in the Sangam period explains the life norms that the men in the Sangam period depended on their profession and through their profession, they earned income and strived to achieve family honour. There were many professions such as brahmins (Antaṇar), king, shepherd, salt merchant, farmer, butcher, carpenter, fisherman, and merchant. Through this article, we can learn about the divisions that existed at that time. It can be known that the cultivators who lived in the lands of Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal and Palai were farmers, fishermen and hunters (Eyinar)who excelled in business. Although the people differed among themselves in occupations according to castes, they lived in close contact with each other in the five types of land. The study clarifies that the way of life of the Sangam people is based on the barter system of selling the goods available in one land and buying the goods they need in another land. Although there sare various differences in professions, the people of the Sangam period have been living together. Men of the Sangam era have been well-known for their bravery in social organizations and in helping the government. Men of the Sangam age lived a pure and happy life, distinguished by heroic status, morals and hospitality.

Abstract:
SummaryMedical biochemistry is the usual name for clinical biochemistry or clinical chemistry in Serbia, and medical biochemist is the official name for the clinical chemist (or clinical biochemist). This is the largest sub-discipline of the laboratory medicine in Serbia. It includes all aspects of clinical chemistry, and also laboratory hematology with coagulation, immunology, etc. Medical biochemistry laboratories in Serbia and medical biochemists as a profession are part of Health Care System and their activities are regulated through: the Health Care Law and rules issued by the Chamber of Medical Biochemists of Serbia. The first continuous and organized education for Medical Biochemists (Clinical Chemists) in Serbia dates from 1945, when the Department of Medical Biochemistry was established at the Pharmaceutical Faculty in Belgrade. In 1987 at the same Faculty a five years undergraduate study program was established, educating Medical Biochemists under a special program. Since the academic year 2006/2007 the new five year undergraduate (according to Bologna Declaration) and four-year postgraduate program according to EC4 European Syllabus for Postgraduate Training in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine has been established. The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Public Health accredited these programs. There are four requirements for practicing medical biochemistry in the Health Care System: University Diploma of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Study of Medical Biochemistry), successful completion of the professional exam at the Ministry of Health after completion of one additional year of obligatory practical training in the medical biochemistry laboratories, membership in the Serbian Chamber of Medical Biochemists and licence for skilled work issued by the Serbian Chamber of Medical Biochemists. In order to present laboratory medical biochemistry practice in Serbia this paper will be focused on the following: Serbian national legislation, healthcare services organization, sub-disciplines of laboratory medicine and medical biochemistry as the most significant, education in medical biochemistry, conditions for professional practice in medical biochemistry, continuous quality improvement, and accreditation. Serbian healthcare is based on fundamental principles of universal health coverage and solidarity between all citizens.

Abstract:
The article discusses the main directions of interaction between employers and higher education organizations in the design, implementation and quality assessment of educational programs in the field of safety in emergencies. The changes in the federal legislation on education in terms of expanding the opportunities for the participation of employers and their associations in the process of training personnel of the relevant profile are characterized. Particular attention is paid to the problem of coordination between federal state educational standards and professional standards. An analysis of the changes in the approach to the content and forms of practical training of graduates is given. Noting the formal approach of some employers to the participation in the development and implementation of educational programs, the authors conclude that there is a necessity for a systematic approach to this process and for the coordination of the main areas of interaction between key participants on the part of councils for professional qualifications. Based on the analysis of these regulatory documents and the current situation, the authors conclude that the educational organizations of law enforcement structures are gradually adapting centralized methods of managing professional training of personnel to the realities of a market economy. One of the leading and most important areas is the constant expansion of the direct participation of ordering departments in the educational process and the organization of practical training at specialized organizations directly. A characteristic is given of such areas of activity of the Council for Professional Qualifications in the field of safety in emergencies as participation in the development of state standards for vocational education, updating vocational education and training programs, organizing activities for professional public accreditation of educational programs. The main components and features of the procedure of professional public accreditation are considered.

Abstract:
Problematization: Financial departments have during the recent years developed due to environmental changes, and so has the controller profession. Controllers are working hard in the shadow of the CFO, together with an unclear definition over their tasks. By shedding light on the controller can their value-creation for the organization be defined. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine developments of the controller profession from a Swedish organizational context. Furthermore, this thesis aims to investigate if there is an expansion of the controller professions role, within organizations, that affecting their ability to create value. Methodology: The research has been conducted with a qualitative approach. In this study was 8 interviews performed with controllers in Swedish organizations. This research further examines the controller profession from a general context, in other words, without no specific industry orientation. Findings /conclusions: The findings of this study argue for that there still exist an indistinct definition over the controller profession, thus developments within their role can be confirmed. The traditional view of controllers’ work should therefore be prolonged. Controllers are still just as accountable for financial assignment, the role has however, developed to become involved in most of parts organizations’ businesses and adapted an advisory role. The advancements have made the controller role to a central position with great ability to create value within an organization, yet, to what extend depends on various factors and aspects.

Magdalenić, Sanja. "Gendering the sociology profession : Sweden, Britain and the US." Doctoral thesis, Stockholms universitet, Sociologiska institutionen, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-135.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation explores the relationship between gender and professions with a historical sociological analysis of the sociology profession in Sweden, Britain and the US. The theoretical framework draws upon three conceptual terrains: professions, organizations and gender. A variety of sources are utilized, such as published and unpublished material, interviews, available statistics, auto/biographies and archival material. The aim of the dissertation is twofold. First, it seeks to add to theorizing about the relationship between gender and professions by exploring the ways in which the emergence, organization of and knowledge production in an academic profession interrelates with gender. Second, the dissertation considers how gender is interrelated with the historical development of sociology as a profession. A revised concept of the “professional project” - which involves historically specific strategies of occupational closure - is used as an analytical tool to examine gendered processes of exclusion and demarcation that occurred in the three national histories of sociology. The dissertation considers three dimensions that are central to that framework of analysis - professional associations, academic departments and sociological canon – to explore how the restructuring of gender relations varied in different organizational spheres and over time. Although both women and men were involved in the sociological movement that preceded the emergence of the sociology profession, men came to dominate the institutional arenas such as sociology departments and professional associations. The conception of sociology as a field excluded the previous work of women, and some men, whose work did not fit the new agenda of objective science. Despite the fact that sociology as a profession institutionalised in different periods in Sweden, Britain and the US, until the late 1960s women were largely absent from higher posts in professional associations, sociology departments and the sociological canon. Also in all three sociology fields, there were social movements and women’s professional organizations that sought to bring women into the sociology profession and to put gender research on sociological agenda. Of the three arenas linked to the professional project, i. e. professional associations, academic departments and sociological canon, my analysis shows that women have made the greatest inroads in professional associations in terms of broadening the associations’ membership and representation as well as institutionalising gender caucuses and programs into the associations. Academic departments, where the production of future professionals and most knowledge takes place, have been slower to change. Finally, despite notable achievements in gendering sociological theory and research, gender has not yet become fully integrated into sociological canon.

Abstract:
Stronger financial pressures are currently challenging previously unopposed ways of directing work within professional organizations, where strong groups characterized by power, prestige and autonomy play a major role. As a result of increased scrutiny of professions from the outside, resistance to change emerges in these settings. Earlier applied frameworks for understanding change mechanisms in a professional setting are however rather limited in their understanding of how change dynamically occurs. By designing a novel, more dynamic framework for organizational change, we aim in this thesis to develop an increased understanding for challenges to change initiatives in professional organizations. Through observational studies and open interviews at a Swedish hospital working with process development based on lean principles, we were able to identify the five discursive practices of “Shielding the Profession”, “Exempting Exceptions”, “Positioning Subjects”, “Casting the Other” and “Engaging” as being typical for professional organizations. By understanding the dynamics of discursive interplay, we could then explain how these practices contributed to three major challenges to change initiatives within professional organizations; “The challenge of novel concepts”, “The challenge of achieving managerial influence” and “The challenge of distance”. Our results should provide a foundation for further studies wanting to explore how change processes strategically can be managed, but could also be used as a tool for managers in professional organizations wanting to understand why change initiatives do not result in desired outcomes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study has been to highlight how school social workers experience their discretion, and furthermore how they feel about working in a context mainly dedicated to teachers. The study is executed with a qualitative research method where ten interviews with school social workers, in eight schools in the area of Stockholm have been conducted. The theoretical framework used to analyze the results was discretion, street-level bureaucracy and human service organizations. The main findings of this study imply that the most important ambition of the social work that was conducted in the schools was to help the students reach their knowledge goals. The assignment is, however, not clearly defined, which has lead to school social workers defining the mission and goals themselves. They all have wide discretion and great possibilities to decide how to execute their work, but how they use the freedom that was given seems to vary among them. An additional finding was that being a school social worker is often a solitary role in the organization, and therefore most of them highlight the importance of enjoying independent work and having a co-worker to discuss their work with.

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation examines the transformations in the recruitment of the French Socialist Party’s (PS) political personnel from the late nineteenth century to 2012. It shows how social logics of recruitment have been replaced by political ones, with a significant renewal of the party’s elected representatives and executives in the 1990s. The research is based on extensive fieldwork combining quantitative and qualitative methods (interviews, participant observation, archival work and prosopography). The first part describes the social rationales at work in the renewal of the PS’s political personnel from the late nineteenth century to the 1990s. The second part examines in closer detail the devaluation of the mobilized groups’ resources during the 1990s. Finally, the third and last part demonstrates how the reevaluation of political and party resources has transformed the recruitment and changed the elected representatives’ political capital

Abstract:
The authors analyze chemistry teachers' discourse in a WhatsApp group. This online communication platform is used for continually studying the communication behavior of leading chemistry teachers who are members of a professional learning community (PLC). They describe the network of chemistry teachers' PLC in Israel, which provides the context for the study. WhatsApp enables sustained ongoing, intensive interaction, and sharing of knowledge that is practical, directly related to the members' needs, and is participant driven and constructivist in nature. A theoretical perspective of teachers' knowledge and professional development (PD) was developed in 2015 by Gess-Newsome, which was applied to examine the mechanism underlying teachers' knowledge development.

Abstract:
This book covers the stories of African American women chemists who entered the field before the civil rights era or shortly thereafter. The women in this book were swimming against the tide. They chose to enter a career in which they were among the first persons of their gender and race. There are many young American women currently active in the profession of chemistry. Young girls are still interested in becoming scientists; however, they still have to fight to make sure they receive a good education in science. This need for good education is discussed in a book titled, Swimming against the Tide: African American Girls and Science Education, by Dr. Sandra L Hanson. Dr. Hanson studied young African American girls in high school and their attitudes toward science, which has traditionally been a male profession. One of Dr. Hanson’s conclusions is that these young girls had never seen a role model, African American women chemists, either in books or in person. She also discovered that the young women were still interested in science, even though they received little encouragement from their teachers. Dr. Hanson found that the parents of the girls encouraged their interest in science, with mothers being their biggest cheerleaders. Dr. Hanson would like to see more science teachers encourage young African American girls to study science. One of the women in this book, Allene Johnson, served as a high school chemistry teacher and made a career both of mentoring science teachers and of encouraging African Americans, both male and female, to enter careers in chemistry. Most of the other women in this book also have mentored women who wanted to become chemists either in academia or in industry. What resources are available to young people if they are interested in chemistry as a career? There are many organizations that are focused on careers in chemistry. The major one is the American Chemical Society (ACS). However, one should first consider this question: What is chemistry? Chemistry is a varied profession.

Abstract:
2,5-hexanedione is the main metabolite of hexane and methyl butyl ketone excreted into urine and is currently used to estimate the human exposure levels to these solvents in professional environments. In Brazil, occupational exposure is regulated by a national control program (PCMSO) and applied to public and private organizations that hire your employees according to the actual Brazilian legislation. In the present work, we validated a methodology based on a gas chromatography−flame ionization detector (GC-FID) for the quantification of 2,5-hexanedione in urine to attend the new occupational limit of urinary 2,5-hexanedione, established by a recent revision of the Brazilian legislation, which reduced this limit from 5.0 to 0.5 mg/L. Before GC-FID analysis, sample treatment was based on a simple liquid-liquid extraction with dichloromethane. Considering that there is no specific validation guide for occupational purposes, the adopted validation process was performed using a “fit-for-purpose” approach based on different guides, including FDA bioanalytical method validation, European Commission Decision 2002-657-EC, and ANVISA Guidelines RDC 166/2017. After method optimization, the performance characteristics determined by the present validation study were considered satisfactory and demonstrate the method suitability for the routine analysis in the Brazilian PCMSO, including CCα and CCβ values, which are used to avoid the presentation of false-positive and false-negative results. Intra and interday reproducibility were below 2.66, and 4.08 % and analyte recoveries were above 95.4% for three evaluated levels. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.05 and 0.17, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first application of CCα and CCβ approaches in an analytical method intended for occupational purposes, which are important to know when a sample is out or following the legislation. Then real samples were analyzed herein, and none presented 2,5-hexanedione above the required limits.

Abstract:
Facilities Management (FM) is the integrated management of the workplace to enhance the performance of the organization. It is obvious that competent FM will arouse effective working performance and the value of the organisation by increased employee productivity. Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory helps to explain the adoption process of innovation by modelling its entire life cycle according to the aspects of communications and human information interactions. Thus, this research aims to identify the influencing factors and nature of their effect on FM diffusion in Sri Lankan organisations, FM as a sample for the profession. A qualitative research approach was selected to conduct the research. A comprehensive literature synthesis was carried out at first to determine the existing data and also to develop the questionnaire survey which was designed for top management of FM adopted organisations in Sri Lanka. The questionnaire respondents were selected randomly with the available information. Collected data were analysed using manual content analysis and which was validated using a 95% confidence interval test. Research findings revealed that majority of FM adoption decision was taken in the Sri Lankan organisations by Board of Directors/ Managing Director which is authority type organizational innovation-decision and there is nothing which belongs to collective categories such as the decision of the government or any corporation or councils or board. Moreover, the Rogers generalizations regarding internal characteristics for the innovative organizations are most appropriate with the Sri Lankan FM adopted organizations.

Tasios, Stergios, Evangelos Chytis, Evangelia Proniou, and Alexandra Charisi. "COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the accounting profession." In Corporate governance: Theory and practice. Virtus Interpress, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.22495/cgtapp9.

Full text
Abstract:
The pandemic significantly altered the working environment due to the shift to remote working, redesigned office functions and reengineered working protocols (Parker, 2020). In addition, employee stress levels increased, their autonomy and perception of hierarchy changed and relatedness within organizations was impaired (Delfino & van der Kolk, 2021). While most accounting literature focused mainly on public budgeting, accounting education, financial markets, public sector and corporate disclosure (Rinaldi, 2022) little research has been conducted on the accounting profession per se. Early results suggest that professionals employed in the accounting industry were significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic (Carungu, Di Pietra, & Molinary, 2021, Heltzer & Mindtak, 2021, Papadopoulou & Papadopoulou, 2020). The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the pandemic on the accounting profession focusing on professionals who provide bookkeeping and taxation services to corporations and individuals

Abstract:
t Continuing medical education (CME) is the right and obligation of every health worker for continuous professional development and one of the conditions for license renewal. The need for CME arose as a consequence of constant innovations in medicine as a science, as well as the introduction of new technologies in therapy, diagnostics and health care. It is necessary (mandatory) for all health workers, because it provides monitoring and reform of the education and health system according to WHO recommendations. A CME is a set of educational activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional accomplishments and relationships that a physician and other health care professionals use to provide services to patients, the public, or the profession. The CME system ensures that the latest knowledge and the latest treatment techniques are transferred through additional and continuous form of internal or external training to doctors and medical technicians, and aims to raise the level of expertise and improve the quality of health care in all forms of health care and daily practice. E-learning is a step forward in CME. The aim of this paper is to present the e-learning system of education of medical workers in Serbia, as well as to present the attitudes of health workers about e-learning continuous medical training through empirical research.

Abstract:
The situation we are experiencing on a global level and in the domestic environment confirms long-standing warnings that human and planetary survival requires radical changes in the way we think and respond to the demanding problems and challenges of today's society. The COVID19 epidemic has further exacerbated the deterioration. There is too much intolerance, even towards those who, in their moral and professional obligation to humanity and the medical profession, risk their own lives to save the lives and health of others. As social and personal hardships intensify, the dark forces of human character accumulate and destroy interpersonal and social relationships. Due to the increasingly serious consequences, such as psychological and physical violence, discrimination and exclusion in the workplace, a comprehensive and inclusive (integrated, integrative) model of an inclusive and safe work environment is being established worldwide. Inclusive practices have a positive effect on productivity by improving organizational climate and employee motivation, commitment and adherence to business ethics and values of the organization, while reducing turnover and risk of deviance. Therefore, they are often mentioned as the starting point for integrated and connected, integrated business, applicable business ethics and integrity, sustainable social responsibility, and achieving sustainable development goals in the era of new technologies and Industry 4.0. Thus, as part of a tertiary research project, in January 2020 we organised a seminar with a workshop for UKCL employees on a friendly, inclusive and safe working environment. The findings and conclusions are presented in this paper.

Abstract:

Achieving reductions to embodied carbon, the global warming potential emissions due to the production of materials, is an essential component to meeting science-based climate targets. Studies have shown that a significant portion of embodied emissions within the built environment are due to structural materials. However, many structural engineers are, not only uneducated in the concept of embodied carbon, but also not aware of the role their decisions can make in addressing climate change. This is further exacerbated by a profession that does not have sufficient structural system embodied carbon benchmark information to make important and informed early design decisions. This required the collaborative development of a structural engineering commitment program, SE 2050, that is supported by leading professional organizations to spur the education and transformation of the profession.
