Abstract:
Engineers are observed as an archetype of people who carry out their professional tasks through rationality and quantitative aptitude. Thus, they do not consider themselves responsible for any sort of consequences their designed products have. But in contrast to their claim, many scholars argue that engineering products cannot be judged as value neutral as they are designed for public use. The product is good when people use it and get benefit from it and bad when tragedy occurs. The tragedy can be abated or possibly avoided if engineers would incorporate Emotional Intelligence (EI) into their professional task. EI is defined as “skills” that subsume self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Thus, not incorporating EI in the engineering task brings about unwanted tragedies. Against this backdrop, this chapter critically examines the salient features of EI, three models of EI, significance of integrating EI into engineering design, methods to learn and develop EI, and ethical implications of EI in engineering profession.

In New Orleans, unionized black musicians fought for the right to perform at the 1903 United Confederate Veterans reunion. In the debates over the rights of the black musicians, the veterans and union leaders expressed their complicated thoughts on black artistry, labor rights, and proper roles in politics and society. White southerners publicly portrayed black talent as an apolitical vestige of the Old South but nonetheless would not let them play at the reunion. Publicly, they portrayed black musical aptitude as natural, thus separating it from professional and intellectual achievement. They knew that the reunion had political implications, so they privately organized to keep them away because the sight of black professional musicians with union rights would have threatened the romanticized image of the Old South. For the black musicians, the reunion offered economic opportunity, and they wanted their share and access to the massive audience of spectators.

The transformations that have been occurring during the digital age have upended more traditional understandings regarding the teaching and learning process. A recognition of competencies that reflect a novice level of proficiency, dispositional understandings associated with professional expectations and ethics, as well as an experienced aptitude that reflects the capabilities that highlight a capacity towards an enhanced level of subject matter understanding are a progressive style of curricular design and engagement that supports a rethinking of training and talent development in the digital age. This discussion focuses upon a competencies, dispositions, and capabilities model that rethinks curricular design, development, implementation, and evaluation, towards transforming an understanding of teaching, learning, and talent development in the digital age.

Abstract:
Abstract A central theme of this book is the message that skill in interviewing is essentially a product of professional learning, rather than an innate ability that some possess from birth, but others lack. It is sometimes claimed that students should be selected for admission to medical schools partly on the basis of their ability to communicate, that only ‘outgoing’ personalities should be accepted, in the hope that all doctors would, almost automatically, turn out to be good communicators. Perhaps some form of personality and aptitude testing might be a fruitful part of the selection process, rather than reliance solely on the student’s ability to score well in a narrow range of science subjects in school qualifying exams. However, given the range of careers a medical graduate may pursue—in clinical, administrative, laboratory, investigative, or military medicine, for example—it would be difficult to specify the particular qualities to be required in every entrant. In all these fields communication skills are of great value, even though the doctors concerned may not be in day-to-day contact with patients.

Full text
Abstract:
This introduction frames Testing Hearing: The Making of Modern Aurality by showing how the modern cultural practices of hearing and testing have emerged from a long interrelationship. Since the early nineteenth century, auditory test tools and the results of hearing tests have fed back into instrument calibration, human training, architecture, and new musical sounds. Hearing tests received a further boost around 1900 as a result of injury compensation laws and professional demands for aptitude testing. Applied on a large scale, tests of seemingly small measure—of auditory acuity, of hearing range—helped redefine the modern concept of hearing as such. During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the epistemic function of hearing expanded. Hearing took on the dual role of test object and test instrument; in the latter case, human hearing became a gauge by which to evaluate or regulate materials, nonhuman organisms, equipment, and technological systems. Testing hearing has been an enduring cultural technique in the modern period, situated between histories of scientific experimentation and fields of application.

Abstract:
Success factors are a collection of skills that help define how effective performance looks. They define "how" someone does their job successfully. Success factors are useful for a variety of activities, including evaluating, training, interviewing, and managing one's career. Professional behavior delimits the coordinates within which a specific conduct of a profession is manifested. Thus, the successful exercise of a profession presupposes both an aptitude level and the development and expression at work of some personality traits.
