Abstract:

The success of Chinese professional athletes is attributable to the government-run elite sport system; it is seen as one of the most effective and successful systems at nurturing high-skilled athletes. However, within the Chinese professional sport system, tensions between athletes' athletic skills and overall personal development have been widely documented. Among all studies, very few have employed in-depth interviews with professional wushu athletes. In this study, the researcher utilized in-depth semi-structured interviews with professional wushu athletes from three of the 25 professional wushu teams in mainland China. The study was conducted in order to understand the potential conflicts between athletes' athletic skills development and overall personal development. Findings revealed that athletes bear the training at great cost to their future potential as self-sufficient members of Chinese society. Their academic, social, and vocational skills are subject to deep neglect that negatively impacts their post-competition careers. The system considers investment in preparation for the post-competitive lives of the athletes to be a distraction from, or even an impediment to, their success in competition. It is suggested that the Chinese sport system undertake a review and reformation of its approach to wushu training to provide athletes with the skills needed to successfully navigate a life outside of athletics.

Abstract:
The purposes of the investigation were to determine if status of professional sports and professional athletes increases as male participation increases, if perceived status of 'athlete' increases with participation in sports that contain 'male' attributes, and if gender differences are related to status indicators. Sixty-eight students were administered a status-determinants questionnaire. A one-way ANOVA (gender) and a 2 x 12 ANOVA (gender x sport) were employed to determine status ratings of sports. A 3 x 2 (increase/decrease/no change x gender) Chi square was employed to determine status of sports, perceived masculinity of males/femininity of females, and status of the athlete related to gender attributes of sports.

Fong, Kaela. "Talkin' Black: African American English Usage in Professional African American Athletes." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1352.

Abstract:
Sports play an important role in the culture of the United States as does language, so the choice to use non-Standard dialects in a nation that privileges the Standard and negatively judges dialectical differences, especially those spoken by mostly people of color, is not undertaken lightly. Because of this privileging of Standard American English, it is assumed that only professional African American athletes are allowed to keep their native dialect if it is African American English (AAE) and still be successful. However, this is complicated by the historical and present increased criticisms women face in both sport and language. To investigate this claim, a quantitative analysis of post-game interviews of five men and five women in the National Basketball Association and Women’s National Basketball Association, respectively, was conducted. The athletes were analyzed to see if they used dental stopping and be-leveling, two features of AAE. Four additional features of AAE were also investigated on an exploratory basis. Inter-gender variance was found among both genders. Across genders, women used the features of AAE studied an average of 30.6 percent less than men, demonstrating a clear gender difference in the usage of AAE. The results of this study illustrate disparities in women and men’s language use that could be a consequence of the inherent and historical sexism women must face in the realms of both sport and language.

Scalia, Peter. "Factors Associated With Head Trauma Among Professional Mixed Martial Arts Athletes." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32979.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is an enigma that has become synonymous with combat sports over the past few decades. Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport that is growing in popularity world-wide. The objective of this study is to determine the factors associated with head trauma among MMA athletes. Methods: Logistic regression analyses using SPSS 20 was employed to model putative covariates against the dichotomous outcomes of unconsciousness (for the full dataset) and diagnosed concussion (for the enriched subset of fighters who were rendered unconscious). Results: Increasing age, black or African-American ethnicity, shorter rest periods between fights, increasing numbers of significant clinch strikes landed, significant distance body strikes landed and power strikes landed to the body at distance are all factors associated with being diagnosed with a concussion among the fighters rendered unconscious. Conclusion: If bolstered by confirming laboratory and clinical evidence, policies should be developed for implementation by MMA governing bodies to help reduce incidences of head trauma and concussion, built around fighters’ demographic and behavioural characteristics. In particular, enforcing a mandatory rest period between fights and placing an upper limit on fighters’ age are ideas worth exploring.

Abstract:
This study researched the effects of negative publicity on the performance of professional baseball athletes. Four athletes’ performance statistics were evaluated before a scandal that produced negative publicity, during the height of the negative publicity and after the scrutiny tapered off. Chipper Jones, Wade Boggs, Alex Rodriguez and David Justice were the athletes chosen for the study, and all four athletes experienced a similar scandal and negative publicity about their personal and professional lives. The results showed an effect on performance, but it was not always negative and could not be definitively linked to the negative exposure in the media. This suggests that further research is needed and should be continued on a broader scale.

Greenfield, Dominic. "Perceived adequacy of professional preparation in sport psychology among NCAA division IA head athletic trainers." Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1048391.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess Head Athletic Trainers (ATC) of NCAA Division I collegiate institutions perceived adequacy of professional preparation in implementing injury-related sport psychology skills and strategies. A survey instrument was developed and sent to all Head ATCs at NCAA Division IA institutions. Descriptive statistics were computed for information regarding educational background,. years of experience, number of varsity sports served, sport psychology backgrounds, specific sport psychology management strategies used and related perceived competence. Also, independent t-tests were conducted to examine differences in responses between professional preparation/backgrounds of the respondents and their perceived adequacy of preparation when utilizing sport psychology management strategies. Results indicate that 48% of NCAA Division IA Head ATCs have completed a formal course in sport psychology, and that perceived confidence when utilizing sport psychology skills and strategies are higher for this group. Better understanding of the role sport psychology plays in injury rehabilitation will allow ATCs to enhance their athletes' physical recovery from injury.

Scott, Andrea. ""More professional?" … The occupational practices of sports medicine clinicians working with British Olympic athletes." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6124.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines the medical management of pain and injury in British Olympic sport. By drawing upon the perspectives of health-care providers, it explores key developments such as the professionalisation, formalisation and bureaucratisation of sports medicine and the consequences of such developments on doctors' and physiotherapists' working practices, relationships with each other and on athlete care. A questionnaire about the backgrounds (e.g. the qualifications, experience and methods of recruitment and appointment) was sent to members of the British Olympic Association's Medical Committee and Physiotherapy Forum in November 2007 and in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 doctors and 14 physiotherapists between January and June 2008. Data indicate that attempts to professionalise sports medicine into a medical speciality have created fragmentation and resistance among the various groups involved in athlete care at this level. Whilst clinicians were committed by multi-disciplinary practice overall, data reveal qualitative differences between practitioners who have established themselves within bureaucratic organisations such as the English Institute of Sport (EIS) compared to those who provide largely voluntary medical services via National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs). Thus, practitioners in positions of managerial authority were constrained to negotiate the underlying amateur values of numerous sports medicine staff at the same time as striving for a professional ethos. Processes of professionalisation have also impacted upon the inter-professional relations between doctors and physiotherapists and the social organisation of athlete-care. As a consequence of their work setting, clinicians were constrained to adhere to the performance-motivated demands of their athlete and coach clients over longer-term health concerns. Because of their greater orientation towards performance, physiotherapists were able to effectively "compete" with doctors in a number of practice contexts and so claim considerable professional autonomy. This project adds to the existing body of knowledge on the medical practices of sports medicine clinicians in elite level sport and demonstrates the heterogeneity within this area of practice. Furthermore, the thesis highlights the importance of understanding clinicians working practices as a consequence of their particular work setting.

Abstract:
This research extends team identification and social identity theory by investigating whether fans react differently to off-field athlete behaviours based on their support for teams in traditional or non-traditional sporting leagues. The data from three independent samples indicates that prosocial and antisocial off-field athlete behaviour significantly influences consumer intention in a non-traditional setting, with results indicating the less identified a person is with their team the more susceptible they are to off-field athlete behaviour changing their consumer intention levels. Conversely the off-field behaviour of athletes did not significantly impact consumer intention among the traditional participants.

Shockley, Justin A. "Unfiltered?: A Content Analysis of Pro Athletes' "Twitter" Use." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2010. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1729.

Full text
Abstract:
As new media grow, so do the users who navigate the virtual world. People and organizations are forced to adapt in order to stay relevant in a technologically driven marketplace. The sports world has been changed drastically because of new media. Athletes no longer communicate with the general public solely through traditional media outlets such as newspapers. Social networking sites such as Twitterallow athletes to directly communicate with mass audiences. This direct communication raises several questions with regard to dynamics of communication and uses of Internet portals. A content analysis examined professional athletes' "Twitter" posts to help answer these questions. While some of the hypotheses were not supported, results were telling. Topics among the sample of posts included direct communication with Twittermembers or links to videos and pictures, as well as "tweets" about each player's job. Findings suggested that professional athletes are mainly neutral overall when posting messages regarding their sport, team, peers, or fans. Limitations of the study and implications for future research are addressed.

Abstract:
Personal Informatics (PI) are information systems that allow people to process activities with the usage of information technology, aiming to produce informational products (data) either for themselves or for others. Technologies that enable PI are becoming increasingly popular, assisting people in collecting personally relevant information about their body and their behaviour. In sports industry nowadays, a great variety of PI wearable tools offer support to athletes and training staff to improve their performance. An example of such tool is the Electronic Performance and Tracking Systems (EPTS), which are a combination of hardware and software that facilitates the collection, storage, analysis and management of professional athletes’ fitness and health data. Although significant and broadly used, EPTS have not yet received much attention from researchers and, thus, understudied. Therefore, the master’s thesis explores the perceptions of professional football athletes and training staff regarding the use of EPTS in their everyday training and work. Furthermore, the master’s thesis research explores the benefits and challenges that professional football athletes and training staff experience when using EPTS in their everyday training and work. The master’s thesis study adopts the interpretive paradigm and qualitative ethnographic approach. The research data was collectedthrough direct observations in the field and semi-structured interviews from Greek professional football athletes and Greek training staff that use wearable EPTS in their everyday training and work and was analysed thematically. A theoretical framework, which is built upon relevant literature from the informatics field and along with the theory of sensemaking, is used to understand, interpret and discuss the research findings. The research outcome of the master’s thesis shows that communication is at the core of EPTS enabling football players and training staff to improve individual and team performance. Organizing of every day starts and ends with EPTS analysis and evaluation and better organized and daily evaluated football methodology appears as key benefit for the club. Coaches and trainers are now more data driven and accurate and analysts and trainers that conduct analysisof the data provided by EPTS are new members of the training staff. Evidence provided by EPTS build trust between staff and players and in the training staff. Visualization tools for presenting insights need to be further improved with the addition of in-field monitors and 3D presentations. Furthermore, it is important for training staff members to have ethical and consistent strategy on how data derived from EPTS are used on how data are communicated.  The research complements previous research on personal informatics and adjusts them to elite team sport context and adds to the theory of sensemaking regarding how users make sense of PI tools that are related with their everyday routines at work. In addition, it offers football training staff members a model for efficient use of EPTS technology into the everyday football practices and a model of sustainable use aiming the overall improvement of team performance.

Dahlquist, Dylan Timothy. "The effects of macro- and micro- nutrient timing on post-exercise hepcidin response in elite and professional athletes." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/58289.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND INFORMATION Iron deficiency (ID) has debilitating effects on athletic performance, causing significant reductions (-34%) in VO₂max. Inflammation caused by exercise has been shown to impede iron absorption in the digestive tract by up-regulating the expression of the iron regulatory protein, hepcidin. To date, nutritional interventions to blunt hepcidin response have been few and equivocal. We investigated the effects of nutrient timing with essential macro- and micro- nutrients to potentially attenuate the post-exercise rise in hepcidin in highly trained athletes. PURPOSE To determine if a post-exercise drink consisting of whey protein isolate (25g) and carbohydrates (75g) with the addition of vitamins, D₃ (5,000 IU) and K₂ (1,000 mcg) (VPRO) or without D₃ and K₂ (PRO), following a bout of high-intensity interval exercise has an effect on the acute post-exercise hepcidin responses in athletes as compared to a non-caloric placebo drink (PLA). Our hypothesis was that both VPRO and PRO will significantly decrease hepcidin following a bout of high intensity exercise as compared to PLA, with VPRO supplementation having a greater effect on hepcidin versus PRO supplementation alone. METHODS Ten elite male cyclists (age: 26.9 ± 6.4 yrs; VO₂max: 67.4 ± 4.4 ml/kg/min) partook in four cycling sessions. A randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blinded triple crossover design was utilized. Experimental days consisted of an 8-min warm-up at 50% pVO₂max, followed by 8 x 3 min intervals at 85% pVO₂max with, 1.5 min at 60% pVO₂max between each interval. Blood samples were collected pre-exercise, post-exercise and three hours post-exercise. Three varying drinks (PRO, VPRO or PLA) were consumed immediately after the post-exercise blood sample. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS The results from the investigation demonstrate that following a fatiguing interval-based cycling exercise in highly-trained athletes, subjects experienced a significant time-dependent increase in all biomarkers measured independent of post-exercise drink composition. In conclusion, the post-exercise drinks had no significant effect on any biomarker. The findings could potentially be related to the dosage of nutrients, the timing of blood samples, or the training status of individuals. The lack of an effect in either of the drinks on hepcidin and other biomarkers are contrary to our hypothesis.

DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1993. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/2253.

Full text
Abstract:
Chemical substance misusage among professional athletes resulting in critical incidents in the National Basketball Association continues to gain an increased interest for the counseling profession. Special emphasis is placed on the utilization of effective treatment and after-care programs that are accessible to the professional athlete in crises due to critical incidents of chemical substance misusage by the athlete. A select group of professional athletes were administered the Survey of Chemical Usage for Professional Athletes. The instrument was designed to assess the history of critical incidents of substance usage by professional athletes in the National Basketball Association by charting specific data related to the behaviors and usage of chemical substances by the athletes. Twenty-six professional basketball players responded to the Survey of Chemical Usage for Professional Athletes. Although there is documented evidence of polydrug misusage in the National Basketball Association, only one professional athlete admitted to ingesting a substance other than alcohol. The survey results provided evidence of five cases of critical incidents among the twenty-six survey respondents. The five cases of critical incidents were in the form of warnings by league officials for alcohol and drug use by the professional athletes. From data obtained from the surveys, a decrease or cessation of drug and alcohol use was evidenced as a result of these warnings.

Hall, Tammy Kay. "Determinants of elite athletes' commitment to sport : examination of the sport commitment model in the professional sport domain." PDXScholar, 1993. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3551.

Abstract:
This study examined the applicability of the Sport Commitment Model for a group of elite, professional athletes. The model proposes that an athlete's commitment will increase as sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities increase and will decrease with an increase in involvement opportunities. The influence of identification as an athlete, a determinant of commitment not included in the original model, was also examined. One hundred and eighty three professional football players from the Canadian Football League (CFL) (n = 121) and National Football League (NFL) (n = 69) participated in the study. Each subject completed a modified version of the original questionnaire developed to test the constructs in the Sport Commitment Model (Scanlan, Simons, Carpenter, Schmidt, & Keeler, 1993) during a team meeting. Internal consistency reliabilities for the final items in all seven scales were acceptable. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated marginal overall fit (AGFI = 0.757) demonstrating good construct validity and discriminant validity for each scale. Zero-order correlations between commitment and its predictor constructs were significant and in the hypothesized direction for all predictor constructs except social constraints. The correlation between commitment and social constraints was negative and nonsignificant. The simultaneous regression analysis results found the predictor constructs accounted for 38% of the variance in commitment. Identification uniquely accounted for the most variance followed by enjoyment, involvement alternatives, and involvement opportunities. Only personal investments and social constraints did not contribute a significant amount of unique variance to sport commitment. The importance and meaning of the relationships between commitment and its determinants for professional athletes are discussed, as well as directions for future research.

Full text
Abstract:
Muscle injuries in lower limb are common among professional football players. They are classified according to severity and diagnosed with radiological assessment as: grade 1 (minor strain or minor injuries), grade 2 (partial rupture, moderate injuries) and grade 3 (complete rupture, severe injuries). Tetra-polar localized bioimpedance analysis (L-BIA) at 50 kHz made with a phase-sensitive analyzer was used to assess damage to the integrity of muscle structures and increases in fluid accumulation 24-h post-injury in 21 injuries in quadriceps, hamstring and adductors previously diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of this study was to identify the pattern of change in BIA variables as indicators of fluid [resistance (R)] and cell structure integrity [reactance (Xc) and phase angle (PA)] according to the severity of the MRI-defined injury. Most significant percent of change 24h after injury is shown with a significant decrease in Xc that indicates a pattern of disrupted soft tissue structure according to the severity of the injury: grade 1 (17,5 ± 4,6), grade 2 (32,9 ± 8,6) and grade 3 (52,9 ± 3,6). Thus, in other three muscle injuries of different severity in another players, L-BIA measurements had been made during the recovery phase until the return-to-play: deficits of the BIA parameters are 6% for R and Xc in grade I and II and 3% in R and 15% Xc for grade III injury. L-BIA can be useful to understand the pathophysiology and structural impairments of other types of sports related injuries to understand their behavior. Three types of post-traumatic injuries in professional soccer players were also studied: myositis ossificans, intramuscular seroma and trochanteric (hip) bursitis. In the case of myositis ossificans, L-BIA identified a 7-8% decrease in Xc whereas the percent of change obtained in R was negligible (1%). These results are in concordance with histological evidence. In the case of a seroma of the lower thigh and trochanteric bursitis, cavities in soft tissue accumulate fluid. Post-injury L-BIA, relative to the no-injured side, corroborated great muscle tissue destruction indicated by a 50% decrease in Xc and 24-31 % decrease in R due to fluid accumulation. Once the seroma and the blood in the bursitis had been removed L-BIA parameters, compared to the immediate post-injury measurement, increased as follows: in intramuscular seroma, 10 % in R and 74 % in Xc; in trochanteric bursitis, 20 % in R and 24 % in Xc. It’s possible to conclude that L-BIA It is a practical, safe, non-invasive method for field assessment of muscle injuries and could be an alternative method to monitor recovery and contribute to help to decide the return-to-play. Future studies are needed to confirm this method as an interesting tool for the sports physicians to diagnose and take the best decision to determine the return-to-play.

Can statistical analysis of professional basketball players lead to a more efficient evaluation of a player's worth? Following the recent success of statistic-driven baseball franchises, many basketball executives and followers are beginning to mine the sport's production in search of an all-encompassing player value rating. Teams could thus exploit undervalued players, leading to increased team and fan welfare. My thesis addresses this ongoing debate by examining various player and team statistics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). While I find significant relationships between individual efficiency statistics and team success, I also discover the paramount importance of defensive statistics and balanced team payrolls. This paper proposes a model that would help team executives find players who promote team efficiency, rather than individual production

Abstract:
The world of sport has recently been inundated by stories of doping. These reports are not limited to a select few individuals or sports, but seemingly are spread across sports. At first, it was mostly members of the sports community voicing their discontent, but soon actors outside of the sports community, such as government committees, became interested. Anti-doping policies were created to reduce doping; however, these policies were created independently of government and vary in effectiveness. The most visible variances are between professional and amateur sports. Accordingly, this paper investigates why there is variation between professional and amateur anti-doping policies. This investigation is done in a qualitative fashion and employs the Most Similar System of Design (a comparative method) to identify that factors result in the differences. The paper also contributes to the field by creating and organizing the ethics of doping. Furthermore, it compares the various existing approaches to anti-doping policy by analysing the anti-doping policies of the PGA, IOC, WADA, and the MLB. Subsequently, the paper identifies seven obstacles facing anti-doping regulators and identifies new policy tools that could aid anti-doping policies. Finally, it closes with policy recommendations for the future. This paper is comprehensive: it introduces the topic of anti-doping, the subsequent definitions, explains the ethical considerations, answers why there is variation between professional and amateur anti-doping policies, and provides policy recommendations.

Abstract:
The theme of this research is burnout in the sporting context, more specifically the predictors of burnout in professional futsal Brazilian athletes. The main objective was to evaluate and test the Inventory Factors Predictors of Burnout in Athletes (IFPBA-24), supported by three theoretical models: (1) Cognitive-Affective Model of Stress; (2) Model Negative Response to Stress and Physical Training (3) Model of Social Perspective. To fulfill this goal three studies were conducted, it should be noted that the research is part of a larger study and continued on models of sports competitions. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee in Research of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS - under the protocol number 271.526. Study 1: The first study was conducted to reduce the items of the Inventory of Signs and Symptoms of Burnout in Athletes (ISSBA-60), through the exploratory factor analysis, and then was tested the confirmatory validity of the proposed model based on the 24 items retained in first review and was evaluated the internal consistency of the dimensions of the new instrument: Inventory Factors Predictors of Burnout in Athletes (IFPBA-24). The sample was composed by 130 brazilian futsal professional athletes, all male, with age ranged 18-36 years who compete in the Cup Brazil Futsal-Adult-Male (Special Branch). The results showed that on the basis of factor analytic procedures conducted 24 items were selected, equally distributed in six dimensions (Sensation of helplessness before training and competitions, Physical exhaustion, Low perception of competence, Difficulty of reconciling sporting life and social life, Exhaustion emotional, Sensation and inability to improve performance in training and competition), which explained 61.75% of the total variance. A confirmatory factor analysis evaluated the new model of the IFPBA-24, and all indexes (x2/gl = 1.85, GFI = 0.930, AGFI = 0.912, RMS = 0.082) showed appropriate values. The six dimensions had Cronbach's alpha indices ranging from 0.67 to 0.75. Taken together, these results indicate that the new model provides adequate level of validity and internal consistency. Study 2: This study explored possible similarities and differences in all the levels of burnout in athletes, controlling variables, education, years of professionalization (up to six years and more than six years of professional practice) and the presence or absence of lesions in the last year. The study involved the participation of a sample of 130 Brazilian futsal professional athletes - dependent "Study 1", aged 18-36 years. The results indicate no significant differences (p <0.05) in the responses of athletes, when these variables are controlled. Study 3: This study showed the occurrence of possible differences or similarities between statistical predictors of burnout in athletes. The sample was the same as in the second study. The results indicate that there are similarities statistics (p > 0,05) and significant differences (p < 0,05) between the scores of the predictors of burnout in athletes. These results suggest that the predictors of burnout in professional futsal Brazilian athletes with higher levels are: “Difficulty of reconciling sporting life and social life and “Physical exhaustion”; and factors at lower levels are: “Sensation of helplessness before training and competitions” and “Low perception of competence”.

This paper is using the method multidimensional analysis of data on a group of variables which are characterized by the performance of professional athletes. The meaning of this is to find the correct dimension of data for broader quantification. In the theoretical part of this paper I am describing the main goals and the principles of factor and cluster analysis. Furthermore in this part they are broken down the preconditions for the correct use of instruments of the mentioned analysis and they are presented models of each method. In the practical chapter, first there is a comparison of athletes from five professional leagues from the perspective of the wages differential analysis, then with the help of factor analyses a reduction of data is made and from the used data from the finale model a new variable is set. In the last part of this paper I am dividing the objects into groups as described in the cluster analyses with the purpose of further analyzing these clusters.

The knowledge of the individual genomes of the athletes is especially important for sports theory, practice and medicine. This research is devoted to the issue of the effect of genetic factors on the components of sporting physical capacity. We have accumulated a sample of the Lithuanian elite athletes which was studied genetically according to a phenotype. We have created a DNA biobase of the Lithuanian elite athletes of various sporting disciplines and collected information about the genotypes and phenotypes of physical development and functional capacity of the athletes. This is the first time in Lithuania that the elite athletes were investigated according to allelic distribution of 6 candidate gene variants most associated with physical capacity. The genetic diversity of the physical capacity in the Lithuanian population has a pattern manifested by variation in the allele/genotype frequencies of the selected candidate gene markers in the Lithuanian athlete groups and general population. The indexes of physical development and functional capacity of the Lithuanian athletes correspond to the elite levels. Abstract:
Critical thinking (CT) can be described as using resources, identifying assumptions, asking questions, comparing alternatives, and finally coming to a conclusion. Critical thinking can be used in daily life, general work, or in specialty situations and is a valuable skill in health professions. Athletic training integrates CT into evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation programs, and other activities. Critical thinking is needed in the profession of athletic training to increase accuracy of diagnosis and evaluation and to improve patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to establish CT baseline scores for athletic training professional and post-professional students. Results revealed that the post-professional students in this sample scored higher on the Health Science Reasoning Test than professional students.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose with this essay is to identify the differences between professional Swedish male hockey players from the 2017/2018 season which have played in the NHL, SHL and HA. The compression consists of looking at the differences in participation concerning TV-pucken, youth- and junior national-teams and studies at RIG. Furthermore, it refers to explore if there is any sign of Relative Age Effect (RAE) among the participants. Methods In this essay a statistical investigation has been done. The information has been collected from different websites with open registers. Eliteprospects and SCB is the biggest sources of information for the investigation. Results By a quantitative investigation concerning participation in TV-pucken, youth-and junior national-teams and studies at RIG results has been produced. From that it´s visible that the NHL is the league which have the most participants in the examined contexts based on percentage. Furthermore, the SHL have a bigger percentage which have participated in the examined contexts then HA, with exception for TV-pucken where the results where similar. The issue concerning RAE shows indications of it in SHL and HA, but not in the NHL when looking at the selected group. Also, performed where Chi-2 tests that where compared to a significance level of 0.05 which means a critical value of 7,82 or 3,64 depending on if two or four variables parted in the calculation. Out of fifteen tests, eight of them showed out to be statistically significant. Conclusion By the results which have been brought out its visible that there are statistical significant differences between the examined leagues. To be able the reach professional level there is a clear advantage to participate in the examined contexts, especially if a possibility to play in the NHL will appear. Also, it shows signs of RAE in the SHL and HA, though a study on a larger group of individuals performing different sport would give the possibility to generalize the group of professional athletes.

Abstract:
This paper examines the financing of professional athletic venues and why certain franchises are able to obtain high percentages of overall stadium funding from the public. Existing literature shows the negligible effect of new athletic venues on the local economy and per capita income, and therefore the benefits from such a project are largely intangible. I use an ordinary least squares regression and show that the more successful a team is the less public funding they tend to receive. I also find that broad city statistics do not represent the specific areas that policy makers consider when making decisions about spending public money.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of the current study was to investigate factors in the work environment that impact job burnout among academic support professionals who work with college student-athletes. Specifically, the factors of job control match, fairness march, rewards match, and workload match were explored. Additionally, the extent to which emotional exhaustion and depersonalization had an effect on turnover intention was explored. Job burnout has been found to have negative impacts on professionals in human services professions. The sample consisted of academic advisors and learning specialists affiliated with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I programs. Results suggest academic support professionals experience a high level of emotional exhaustion related to a mismatch in perceived job control, rewards, and workload. Additionally, higher levels of emotional exhaustion were found to significantly impact turnover intention. Practical solutions that address job mismatches are discussed along with theoretical implications for the person-environment fit framework applied in the context of the sport industry.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine Certified Athletic Trainers' (ATs) preferred types/formats and related barriers regarding formal (i.e., approved for CE credit) and informal (i.e., not approved for CE credit) CE activities. Furthermore, what is perceived to impact of CE on athletic training practice with regards to improving knowledge, improving clinical skills/abilities, changing attitudes toward patient care, and improving patient care. The population consisted of a geographic stratified random sample of 1,000 ATs. A total of 427 (42.7%) ATs completed the Survey of Formal and Informal Athletic Training Continuing Education Activities (FIATCEA) developed for this investigation and administered electronically. The FIATCEA survey consisted of demographics/characteristic items and Likert scale items (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree) regarding CE participation and perceived impact on practice, preferred types/formats of CE activities, and barriers to CE participation. Cronbach's alpha determined internal consistency for items within each of the three sections at .945, .638, and .860 respectively. Descriptive statistics were computed for all items. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) and dependent t-tests determined differences between AT demographics/characteristics and participation in CE and the perceived impact on practice, preferred type/format of CE, and barriers to CE participation. The alpha level was set at .05.Informal CE activities were completed more than formal CE activities, t(3) _ -114.182,p > .001. Formal CE activities were perceived to enhance knowledge, t(414) _2.559, p = .001, and informal CE activities were perceived to improve clinical skills/abilities, t(409) = -2.754, p = .006, and attitudes toward patient care, t(407) = -3.630,p < .001. The cost of attending CE (M= 4.13, SD = 0.994) and distance required to travel to CE activities (M = 4.15, SD = 0.958) were bathers to CE participation.A majority of respondents completed informal CE, but formal CE activities were preferred. Barriers to CE participation included cost and related travel. Both formal and informal CE activities were perceived to enhance athletic training professional practice. Informal CE activities should be explored and considered for CE credit.

Haddad, Gina Cherie. "Understanding the use of formal Athlete Leadership Groups in professional football teams: Insights from coaches and athlete leaders." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2022. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/29861.

Full text
Abstract:
Athlete Leadership Groups (ALGs) represent a shared athlete leadership model whereby a small group (typically 3-8) of players are selected as athlete leaders and appointed to a formal ‘leadership group’ (i.e., an ALG) that shares team leadership responsibilities with the coach. Coaches of professional sports teams frequently adopt ALGs in their quest to gain a competitive advantage and the model is widely used in professional football teams (in the context of this study professional football refers to Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer and Australian Rules Football) in Australia and New Zealand, where ALGs play a central role in team management. Despite the widespread use of ALGs, knowledge and understanding of this particular formalised shared athlete leadership is limited. This thesis seeks to identify and understand, from the perspective of professional coaches and athlete leaders, the behaviours, attitudes, interactions, and interdependencies which shape the way athlete leadership groups function in professional sport. The thesis consists of three sequential qualitative studies examining the use of ALGs in top-tier Australian and New Zealand professional football teams. The findings illustrate that ALGs offer multi-level (i.e., athlete leader, team members, coach) psychological needs satisfaction, and when the operationalisation is player-driven, coach supported, and underpinned by a shared team identity, this leadership approach can help to shape the motivational climate of a professional football team in a way that promotes performance excellence. In addition to providing robust evidence upon which professional teams can base future decisions for the design, and operationalisation of their ALGs programs, it is hoped the results will provide a platform for further research on this novel shared approach to team sport leadership.

Cunningham, Raechel N. "High School Athletic Directors Perceptions of Athletic Trainer's Professional Knowledge and Competence Based on Attire." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2013. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1067.

Full text
Abstract:
Very little research is available to identify how attire in the athletic training field impacts perceptions of professional knowledge and competence. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of attire on high school athletic directors’ perceptions of an athletic trainer’s professional knowledge and competence. The researcher emailed a questionnaire to ninety-four high school athletic directors from the state of California. The questionnaire measured the effect of attire on the perceptions of skills, knowledge, approachability, experience, education level, overall competence, and representation of an athletic trainer and focused on the difference between khaki attire, professional attire, and workout attire in relationship to perceived knowledge and competence. The respondents rated khaki attire highest followed by professional attire and workout attire when evaluating skills, approachability, overall competence, experience, and knowledge. Representation and education level rated khaki attire as the highest, followed by professional attire, and workout attire rated the lowest. These results indicate khaki attire as the most appropriate attire for high school athletic trainers to wear to achieve the highest perceptions of competence and knowledge from high school athletic directors.

Moles, Troy. "Sexual and Nonsexual Boundary Violations Between Sport Psychology Professionals and Their Client-athletes." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500081/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexual attraction (SA), as well as sexual (SBVs) and nonsexual boundary violations (NSBVs), have been identified as matters of ethical concern, being viewed as harmful within mental health or counseling relationships. Much of the literature in the area of SA and SBVs has focused on the counselor-client relationship, but it has been investigated only minimally in the field of sport psychology and specifically with regard to sport psychology professionals (SPPs). Because SA, SBVs, and NSBVs between SPPs and their client-athletes seem to be potentially problematic concerns in need of empirical investigation and practical scrutiny, the aim of this study was to examine: (a) the incidence of SBV and NSBV beliefs and behaviors among SPPs; (b) SPPs' feelings regarding SA for and from client-athletes; and (c) SPPs' willingness to seek supervision to manage their SA beliefs and behaviors towards client-athletes. SPPs (n = 365) completed the Survey of Applied Sport Psychologists (SASP) via e-mail or regular mail. As expected, SPPs experienced SA (40.6%) and generally did not experience strong feelings as a result of the SA. However, of the SPPs experiencing SA, 13.5% of males and 13.8% of females engaged in a SBV with a client-athlete. NSBV behaviors and beliefs are also reported. Chi-squared analyses revealed male SPPs engaged in nonsexual touching with their client-athletes more frequently than female SPPs. T-tests suggested ethically trained SPPs were more likely to seek supervision as a result of SA and view certain NSBVs as good professional behavior in comparison to non-ethically trained SPPs. Appropriate supervision and ethical training for SPPs experiencing SA could be helpful in the management of potential future SBV or NSBV behaviors. Implications for SPPs working with athletes, limitations of the present study, and recommendations for future research are discussed.
