Abstract:
As an interactive communications tool, work-related blogs can offer professionals a way to reflect on their practices and connect with other professionals around the world who have similar backgrounds and interests. Reflection helps practitioners make connections between various information streams, their work experiences, and interactions with clients. Reflection can also help connect educational research with applied practices. This essay focuses on the development and evolution of the Instructional Design Open Studio (IDOS) blog, which started in early 2006. The IDOS blog was designed as a professional and academic blog to serve the faculty community as a way to disseminate information about e-learning. The author discusses the steps that went into developing the blog, as well as a range of specific issues, including technological, organizational, policy-based, and design. In conclusion, the author shares insight into the overall experience and provides directions for the future.

Professional Communication in the Topical Librarianship Blog: A Case StudyZinaida Manžuch SummaryThe patterns of professional communication in the topical librarianship blog are explored in the paper. The huge impact of topical blogs on the development of professional communities, knowledge and experience sharing, and learning is widely aknowledged. Although the subject of topical blogs usage patterns has been analysed by library and information researchers wordwide, there haven’t been any attempts to perform similar empirical research in Lithuania. In most cases, available research worldwide tends to be descriptive and narrowly oriented at information sharing practices. The aim of the paper was to determine the patterns of blog usage for the professional communication purposes by analysing the case of the Rock&Roll Librarian blog. In order to overcome the limitations of previous research, the concept of professional communication was discussed and used as a guidance for interpreting findings of the empirical research. The research methodology was based on the analysis of features of blogs as a communication medium and different research approaches. The qualitative and quantitative content analysis of the blog texts and statistical usage data provided by Google Analytics was performed. The findings suggested that the blog only partly was used for professional communication purposes. Professional communication was not sufficiently visible at the initial stage of blog existence. However, the early patterns of professional communication, such as the focus on professional identity issues and knowledge sharing practices, emerged. Another notable blog usage tendency was the low activeness of its users, expressed in scarce commenting and posting activities. It could be partly explained as a typical behaviour of users at the early stages of blog existence. However, it was also consistent with the results of previous research of the librarianship blog, indicating the low activeness of users. It was concluded that the novelty of blogs as media and the emerging blog communication culture may be pre-requisites of the slow integration of this technology into professional communication practices. Finally, the value of the blog for researching professional communication issues was identified; however, it is still absent in library and information science publications.

<p>Based on an empirical study of 31 Danish research blogs, the article provides an analysis of personal publication on the Web. The blog is conceptualised as a media form characterised by personal publication through dated entries, continuous updates, reverse chronological order and the possibility of subscription. The study shows that Danish research blogs are characterised by serious, professional and personal publications. In particular, entries combining personal and professional content characterise the research blog and set it apart from other forms of publication. Further, the study shows that the researchers blog in different ways ranging from short, link-based entries to journalistic entries and to long, academic presentations. The article concludes that communication in research blogs can supplement traditional forms of communication and exchange between researchers.</p>

Abstract:
In this study we investigated the preferences of blog readers for the purpose of designing effective blog marketing campaigns. We surveyed 965 customers who have searched for product information via blogs before consuming, and used structural equation modeling to analyze the data. The results showed that the convenience provided by blogs is an important reason for consumers to use the medium for product research. Blog marketing elements were also analyzed in terms of interactional sharing, novelty, and professional characteristics. It was found that interactional sharing most affects consumers' intention to purchase. Additionally, for those who use blogs as a way to search for different types of products, degree of expertise is also an important factor.

Abstract:
Objective – The purpose of the study was to examine how librarian blogs are being used for communication within the profession.

Design – The method used was content analysis and unstructured interviews.

Setting - The researcher is based out of a state university in the United States of America.

Subjects - Content of and communication within 12 librarian blogs were analyzed. Seven of the 12 bloggers were interviewed.

Methodology – There were 15 blogs identified in a list by Quinn (2009) and reduced to the 12 best suited for the study. Over a 24-month period (January 2009-December 2010), random samples of posts with 2 or more comments were selected for each month from the 12 blogs and analyzed. All comments related to these selected posts were also analyzed. The researcher categorized the blogs overall, plus individual posts, into one of four predominant genres (social, professional development, political, and research). Content was coded based on previous coding methodology for blog content found in the research literature. Requests for interviews were sent to all 12 bloggers with 7 agreeing to be interviewed. Preliminary results of the content analysis for his/her own blog were shared with each blogger before the interview took place. Inter-coder reliability was pretested and found to be 83.33%.

Main Results - Two hundred eighty-eight posts randomly chosen received 1936 reader comments. Bloggers responded to these comments 254 times. Blogs were categorized under the “social” genre most frequently (53%), followed by “professional development” (31%), “political” (14%), and “research” (2%; percentages were rounded to the nearest whole number by the reviewer). Professional development was the lead genre in two of the individual blogs. All seven bloggers interviewed stated that professional development is a large focus of their blogs. Reasons for blogging ranged from the importance of sharing information, contextualizing information, and (for some) satisfying personal ambition. There was a common personal enjoyment of writing and all planned to continue blogging despite increasing time constraints.

Conclusion - Professional development is a major focus of content in librarian blogs. Blog posts and comments stay on topic throughout exchanges between bloggers and readers.

Abstract:
The higher education sector faces new opportunities and dilemmas such as budgetary constraints, changing student profiles, demanding quality assurance practices, efficient course delivery modes, the changing role of academics, and reliable assessment practices. At the same time, exciting opportunities are presented by Web 2.0, for example blogs, and information technology-integrated teaching and learning sites. This article explores the usefulness of blogs in supporting Postgraduate Certificate of Education and Bachelor of Education students who are learning to teach Economics in open distance-learning environments. An Economics blog was created for students during their teaching practice period to critically reflect on their learning processes and share teaching practice experiences to enhance professional growth. A qualitative research approach, employing an interpretive phenomenology, was used to study phenomena that are experienced by student teachers. Findings showed the usefulness of blogs as a supportive e-learning tool in constructing a teaching philosophy and the identity of student teachers. Furthermore, blogs emerged as an empowering and attractive way of fostering self-directed learning and providing evidence of achievement for warranting purposes – particularly in the context of a teacher education course at an open distance-learning university. The positive lived experiences of student teachers indicated that the subject teacher mentoring and coaching effectively facilitated teaching Economics. Moreover, it emerged that blogs embracing reflective practices presented the opportunity for self-appraisal on personal values, teaching styles and strategies of learning, thus enhancing self-efficacy.

Abstract:
This paper investigates how sponsored content blend in with the other content, in two established blogs. One is Petra Tungården who has a professional blog, and one is Nicole Falciani's personal blog. It is a comparative study between sponsored blog posts and non-sponsored blog posts. The study is a qualitative rhetoric analysis using the theories native advertising, rhetoric, personal branding and parasocial interaction to investigate how the two bloggers recommend products or services to their readers with the help of argumentation. The result shows that the argumentation for the sponsored and the non-sponsored posts have both smililarities and differences. Both blogs have many more differences than similarities, but the personal blog turned out to have much more differences than the professional one. Further on it is discussed that the differences are not sufficientlly pronounced to the readers to detect them, and that the problem of distinguishing the sponsored content remains.

Abstract:
This is a qualitative study of the two biggest blogs in Sweden, blondinbella.se and kissies.se. The purpose of this study is to find out which characteristics can be found that represent social class and gender, and from that perspective, what image of being a young girl is forwarded to the readers of these blogs. The media debate on the two blogs is ongoing and of special interest are the two writers of these blogs, Isabella Löwengrip and Alexandra Nilsson. With the help of social class and gender theories I analyze the content of the two blogs and try to distinguish which themes are dominant. The result part is divided from those themes that consider shopping, bodily self-esteem and choices. A predominating characteristic on the blogs is the emphasis on the self, the individual experience, and how all that is happening is related to the bloggers themselves. What in the beginning appeared to be two similar fashionblogs, has turned out to be embedding more diversity and hidden social mechanisms than was first apparent. How the bloggers relate to their everyday life, their settings and to critique and ideals, is in big parts shaped by their social class. Another conclusion is that the commercial side of the blogs in large aspects shapes what is written and this affects the subjective total experience of the blogs

Naulin, Sidonie. "Le journalisme gastronomique. Sociologie d'un dispositif de médiation marchande." Thesis, Paris 4, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA040229.

Full text
Abstract:
Gastronomic goods are thus symbolic goods and their market exchange needs the existence of specific valuation devices. As a tool that directs consumers in an opaque market and that indicates the “right” product, or the “right” way to cook, food journalism can be considered as a market device. This thesis is based upon a fieldwork including in-depth interviews, observations, statistics and text analysis. It focuses on the way such a device is built. In a diachronic approach, the first chapters deal with the emergence of this device during the 19th century and with its construction at the crossroads of different social spaces (food world, connoisseurs’ world and journalistic world). It appears that at the end of the 20th century, with the setting up of a food magazines’ market, the vision carried by magazines becomes dependent on their position in competition and on their business model. Then, the individual actors and the making of news are studied. The analysis of the trajectories and the skills of journalists and food bloggers who may compete with them put the light on different forms of food writing and different kinds of trust associated with them. Finally, the study of the actual work of food journalists allows to account for the similarity of media content. The analysis of the career paths of renowned food journalists helps to understand the way they manage to differentiate themselves from the others

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the use and perceived credibility of news blogs among news consumers and news professionals in Thailand. Data was obtained on three reader blog communities linked to Thai online newspapers – OKnation, The Nation Weblog and Mblog. The study examined why blogging exists as a component of mainstream news provision, the attention of users to news blogs, the diversity and the quality of news blogs, and degrees of association between claimed use of news blogs and attitudes of users. Theoretically, it drew upon uses and gratifications and news credibility research. This research employed three research methods: online questionnaires with news blog users, interviews with news professionals, and content analysis with the three reader blog communities. The findings of the study indicate that news blogs were a component of mainstream news provision for some Thai news organisations. In order to attract visitors and use as sources, four out of 15 online newspapers (26%): Komchadluek, Bangkokbiznews, The Nation and ASTV Manager provided blogs for the general public where they could share news and interesting stories. News blog users tended to be male, 41–60 years old, highly educated, and self-employed, with a high income. They used the Internet, consumed television news and read newspapers both offline and online very often but scarcely consumed radio news. OKnation was by far the most popular news blog community. One out of two blog users wrote approximately one news blog story per week. Political surveillance and opinion seeking were the top two news blog use motives. News blogs produced by individuals were rated as less credible than mainstream news reports in the view of audiences and news professionals. Most of news professionals emphasised that news blogs helped them to improve the quality, but not the diversity, of mainstream news reports.

Abstract:
Também pudemos desvelar um ethos profissional das blogueiras que evidencia diferenças entre as profissionais, seus percursos na carreira, motivações e produção.<br>Assuming as a theoretical and methodological basis the studies of Media Archeology and the archaeological perspective of Michel Foucault, our object of study corresponds to the characterization of a new professional profile in the field of Communication; the fashion bloggers. Therefore, we established as the main objective of our research the definition of how the professionalization process of fashion blogs in Brazil took place. Throughout the research we identified characteristics of the fashion bloggers and their practices, as professionals. This research focuses on fashion bloggers because of their importance in establishing new formats and business models for other internet producers. To understand how this process takes place, we analyzed the discursive enunciation of 52 bloggers (through blog posts, YouTube videos and Instagram publications) between 2014 and 2018, searching for statements about their professional activity. Among the results is the characterization of four stages of the process of professionalization in the fashion blogosphere: vanguard, legitimation, institutionalization and professional. We have also been able to unveil a professional ethos of bloggers that shows differences among professionals, their career paths, motivations and production.

Abstract:
Le blog est ici au service d’un processus de reconnaissance et de légitimation sociale caractéristique de la professionnalisation<br>For the last twenty years, wine has been dealt with in various editorial ways creating therefore a discursive exuberance about this complex topic. Digital and social technologies available on the Internet contribute to this editorial overabundance. Digital experiences in professional wine field respond to strategic ambitions, to multiple logics. French wine makers’ blogs aroused interest. A blog enables people to create and publish contents. Its project is based on an interpersonal exchange dynamic and digital talks. On French wine makers’ blogs, published posts give information about work situations linked with both vine and wine cycles without any exchange dynamic and digital talk. Considering the typical stakes of the wine industry, we assume here that French wine makers’ blogs are supporting a professionalization process. This research aims to show how a unique editorial production – blogs – is meant to be without being involved in any digital exchange or dialogue. A substantial part of the published contents is about detailed storytelling regarding professional activities. Narrative contexts relate to the expression of professionality (all necessary professional skills) . The other posts gather some honourable facts and evaluations produced by other authorities. This kind of posts is linked with reputation principles which are one of the many forms of professionalism. Blogs are here helping a recognition and social legitimisation process that is typical for professionalization

Abstract:
The Social Media is a communication vehicle which allows to its users a great interactivity between them. These communication tools are used nowadays to daily communication between the users given its efficiency and quickness in sharing information and contents virtually. Abstract:
Our work focuses on innovative simulation techniques for interprofessional teams, and especially its heart: the debriefing. Several studies have shown that debriefing without instructor could be effective for individual learning. But no study has yet explored team debriefing without instructor as a possible approach to improving team performance. However patient care in emergency life-threatening situations is almost always the responsibility of a team. Combining quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, we evaluated the effectiveness and analyzed the content of within-team debriefing without instructor to improve performance of life-threatening emergencies management by interprofessional teams. This work optimizes instructor training, and facilitates diffusion of simulation-based interprofessional training

Abstract:
This research is in depth interpretative case study looking at the raised of contesting practices in the medical profession. In the 1970s, a social movementemerged in France defending the return of professional values that have been absorbed by the prevalent managerial logic. Actors shaped an innovative ‘hybrid’logic (Reay &amp; Hinings, 2009) setting in between professional and evidence - based of medicine logic (Mendel &amp; Scott, 2010). This study explains how a social movement have challenged successfully the dominant logic, and how the vision came to be incorporated into the field configuration. A large amount of qualitative datawere collected via interviews, archives, and ethnography, and analysed withhermeneutics cycles methodology (Bleicher, 1980; Myers, 2013). I created fifty biographies and focused on the different epistemic objects professionals were using to defend and diffuse the project (Knorr-Cetina, 2001). The contribution of analysing sociomateriality in the process of change is twofold. Theoretically it explained the performative dimensions of a transformation of logic (Orlikowski, 2005). Methodologically it offers new possibilities for identifying institutional logics in a field (Thornton et al., 2012). Findings allow me to illustrate the Austinian perspective of performativity which highlights the formal cooperation between actors (Austin, 1965)

Abstract:
Research on the increasing importance of party leaders in elections has observed that party leaders maintain personal websites, blogs, and social networking sites in order to personalize the image of themselves by mixing personal and professional matters. This chapter examines whether these efforts affect the party leader character impressions by voters in a positive way. The chapter presents two experiments that examine the impact of exposure to authentic personal websites and, as a form of social media, blogs of party leaders on voters' perceptions regarding various traits of party leaders during a Finnish election campaign. The findings are mixed. The perception of one leader was significantly enhanced by exposure to his website as well as his blog. Moreover, exposure to the blog by this politician resulted in an enhanced assessment of his personality traits whereas exposure to his website had positive effect on the evaluation of his professional traits. In making sense of the findings, web and social media approaches, and participant expectancies are discussed.

Abstract:
In higher education in recent years the educational value of blog journals for facilitating student engagement, reflection and learning has been emphasized (Chu, Kwan, &amp; Warning, 2012; Ellison &amp; Wu, 2008; Richardson, 2005; Yang, 2009). According to Williams and Jacobs (2004), blogs are seen as a ‘transformative educational tool', which assists in the development of ‘reflective and critical thinking skills' (Joshi &amp; Chugh, 2009). This chapter critically analyzes the reflective and collaborative value of two different systems of blog journaling used by postgraduate student to reflect on their arts industry internships. Firstly Blogger (https://www.blogger.com), used between 2008 and 2012 and secondly, journal blogging in the Learning Management System (LMS) of Moodle (2014) are critiqued in terms their ability to promote student engagement, reflection, connection and collaboration. There is particular emphasis on how recent blog journals (2014) reflect how students' confidence, awareness and understandings evolve as they develop professional expertise.

Abstract:
“Blogging” has become an incredibly popular activity in recent years. Although political blogging broadly defined as a blog whose “content focuses on issues, events, and policy in a constituency, national, international, or party context” (Ferguson &amp; Griffiths, 2006, p. 366) – constitutes only a small sliver of the overall blogosphere, it has attracted a great deal of attention from political scientists, mass communication specialists, and researchers interested in information technology. The primary focus of this attention has been on four central questions. First, what motivates political bloggers to blog about politics? Second, what is the nature of the politically oriented discussions found on political blogs? Third, what are the political consequences of political blogging? Finally, how have professional politicians used blogs in campaigns and once in office? This entry summarizes the existing literature into each of these questions and points to a number of issues that should be addressed in future studies of the causes and consequences of political blogging.

Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the findings of a research study analyzing knowledge and emotional sharing in a self-generated online teacher community. Although active informal learning occurs in online communities of teachers, scant information is available about the knowledge and emotions teachers share in these communities. The authors conducted a content analysis of 1,709 entries in a self-generated blog community and examined the types of activities teachers were engaged in. The data revealed that over 29% of entries were related to lesson plans or teaching resources. In addition, over 17% of the postings addressed teachers’ positive or negative emotions. The authors argue that teacher participation in online communities should be promoted and encouraged since online communities help teachers with informal learning and emotional sharing.

Abstract:
This chapter studies 21 preservice teachers' blog reflections about working in an Italian classroom and living with a host family during a four-week study abroad program in Northern Italy. During the program, preservice teachers were required to blog about their experiences living and studying abroad using personal blog sites. To encourage more candid reflection about the program, the blog posts could be related to any aspect of the program preservice teachers chose to reflect on. After setting the context of the study through description of the study abroad program and its requirements, the authors present qualitative findings regarding preservice teachers' (a) thoughts related to their observations of Italian classrooms, (b) thoughts related to becoming an Italian language learner, and (c) lessons learned from the study abroad experience. Findings discuss preservice teachers' reflections on making sense of educational and cultural differences, experiences as Italian language learners, and opportunities for professional and personal growth.

Abstract:
As we move towards the third decade of the 21st century, the development of emerging technologies continues to grow alongside innovative practices in digital media environments. This chapter presents a comparative case study of two teams (Team A and Team B) in a professional master's program during a 13-week, project-based course. Based on the role of documentation and the reflective practitioner, team blogs representing learner experiences of Agile practices were analyzed. This case study chapter focused on one blog post of a mid-term release retrospective. The results of this case study are framed around Derby and Larson's (2006) Agile retrospectives framework, including: set the stage, gather data, generating insights, deciding what to do, and closing the retrospective. The case study results suggest the need for public documentation of retrospectives and how this can be challenging with non-disclosure agreements. Also, the authors identify the importance of being a reflective practitioner. Future research on educational and professional practices needs to be explored.

Abstract:
Since 2006, the Teaching Qualification (Further Education) – a professional teaching qualification for in service college lecturers – has been delivered online by University of Dundee, via a virtual learning environment (VLE) on the Blackboard platform. This chapter charts developments in the programme over the period 2006 to 2010, during which time the teaching team have endeavoured to foster an interactive learning environment that actively promotes collaboration, in keeping with the social constructivist epistemology upon which the programme is modelled. The chapter explores the ways in which the programme has encouraged (recently very successfully) collaboration – participant-with-participant and participant-with-tutor –and concludes with discussion of a blog, piloted in 2009 and rolled out to all programme participants in 2010, which enabled them to initialise online discussion topics and through direct interaction with one another and teaching staff, create and disseminate user-generated knowledge. The author asserts that the closed VLE has not lived up to its promise in the TQ(FE) context in terms of collaborative learning and participant interactivity generally and suggests reasons for this and a way forward: constructing Open Educational Resources (OERs) to supplement and in time supersede the closed VLE.

Abstract:
In digital era technology is constantly reshaping our future and creates new demands for educators to bridge the gap between old school methodology and digitally-oriented professional landscape. Digital natives, who are flooding our universities at the moment, can’t imagine their lives without mobile phones and social networks. The question that naturally arises is why not to use these ICT advances in and out of the classroom in order to enhance learners’ outcomes in both hard and soft skills? The paper presents the study which evaluates the impact of tertiary-level student blogs in English on the development of their professional and social competences from the students’ perspective. The research questions were: 1) to investigate the students’ experience with running an educational blog; 2) to evaluate the impact of a student educational blog in Public Speaking Course on students’ foreign language proficiency level perceived by language learners themselves; 3) to assess the students’ beliefs and evaluations of the development of their soft skills due to the blogging technology interwoven into the academic process in Public Speaking Course at the university. The method employed in the current research was a questionnaire study to find out learners’ opinions about the impact of students’ blogs on their professional and social competences. The experiment was conducted at Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University (Russia) in which two study groups participated with the total of 32 students. The participants as part of their Public Speaking course had to run a multi-media educational blog in the English language as a portfolio of their progress in this discipline. The questionnaire included demographic questions and research questions. Research questions addressed the respondents’ experience with blogs, their attitudes to blogging, and the perceived impact of blogging technology on their foreign language proficiency level and soft skills. The results of the study showed that most participants were interested in having more experience with both professional and personal blogs in the future and gave high ranking to the impact of such blogs on their foreign language acquisition. The research confirmed our hypothesis that students’ multimedia blogs in the target language would have a positive impact on students’ professional as well as social competences and would enhance their motivation and participation rates.

Abstract:
User attribute classification aims to identify users’ attributes (e.g., gender, age and profession) by leveraging user generated content. However, conventional approaches to user attribute classification focus on single attribute classification involving only one user attribute, which completely ignores the relationship among various user attributes. In this paper, we confront a novel scenario in user attribute classification where relevant user attributes are jointly learned, attempting to make the relevant attribute classification tasks help each other. Specifically, we propose a joint learning approach, namely Aux-LSTM, which first learns a proper auxiliary representation between the related tasks and then leverages the auxiliary representation to integrate the learning process in both tasks. Empirical studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach to joint learning on relevant user attributes.
