Abstract:
This chapter explores the dynamics which govern the interactions of professionals and examines the implications for leaders of professional organizations. There may be several hundred senior professionals working inside a large professional organization. At any moment, they may stop thinking of themselves as part of the collective and start pursuing their individual interests. Despite its many limitations, partnership remains the optimal legal form of governance for reconciling professionals’ competing interests; the chapter explains why. It identifies the socialization processes, management systems, and governance structures which create and sustain the partnership ethos. By distinguishing partnership as a legal form from partnership as an ethos, it identifies how valuable aspects of the partnership ethos can survive and thrive within a corporation. It explains how leaders with a sophisticated understanding of their organization’s partnership ethos will be more effective at influencing partnership dynamics and at avoiding falling foul of them.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the relationship between individual and organizational identity in PSFs and the significant but tenuous nature of elite identity in this context. The authors identify four main identity-related issues for management control in PSFs: autonomy/conformity tensions, the client conundrum, ambiguity saturation, and intangibility. They explore three main modes of identity-focused control in PSFs: positive image, homogenization of the workforce, and anxiety-regulation. The chapter examines contemporary challenges to elite identities and the increasing critique of concepts of professionalism in this context and highlights key areas for future research on identity in PSFs and among professionals. These include: the need to acknowledge the homogeneity of professional service firms and professional workers; how professionals regulate their identity to respond to identity challenges; the roles that multiple actors play in a professional’s identity construction; and the depth of identity construction with regard to both organizational and professional identity.

Abstract:
This chapter chronicles the 1949 merger between the BAA and the NBL and its aftermath. The BAA owners' decision to absorb the most attractive NBL teams obviously looms large in the league's development, although the move and subsequent merger ultimately could not save several BAA franchises. By ghettoizing the later NBL refugees, BAA owners may have ensured the demise of those teams. Fortunately, there were not too many people paying attention to the league's upheavals. The league's integration did not initially create much excitement either. Yet the streamlined NBA still struggled to entice fans—in many ways the professional players' experience and savvy led to brutal, foul-plagued games that alienated fans. The chapter also looks at how league owners struggled with racial integration.

Abstract:
The chapter begins by examining the significance of Professional Service Firms (PSFs) in terms of their scale and significance from an economic and societal perspective, and the insights they offer for academic theory. The authors examine how PSFs have remained “in the shadows,” in terms of their visibility within the economy and within scholarly research, and how and why that situation is changing. The chapter discusses “what exactly is a Professional Service Firm?” and highlights four defining characteristics relating to: customization, knowledge, governance, and identity, which frame this definition. After presenting an overview of each of the twenty chapters in the Handbook, the authors conclude by proposing various key themes for future research and by developing an integrative framework for the analysis of PSFs.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the internationalization of Professional Service Firms (PSFs), outlining its drivers, varying forms, and organizational implications. It argues that conventional internationalization theory does not apply straightforwardly to PSFs. The authors identify three key sources of PSF distinctiveness—governance, clients, and knowledge—and show how these generate not only differences between PSFs and other types of organizations but also heterogeneity amongst PSFs themselves. Based on this, four different forms of PSF internationalization are identified—network, project, federal, and transnational—and the authors note that scholarly interest has mostly focused on the last two of these. The chapter highlights change towards the transnational model as an underlying theme in PSF research. It finds little convincing evidence that this model has been successfully implemented and it is argued that, in general, PSFs are better understood as federal structures controlled by a few powerful offices than as transnational enterprises.

Abstract:
This chapter synthesizes and extends the literature on governance in Professional Service Firms (PSFs). It discusses four foundational theoretical perspectives on governance in PSFs: the agency, the partnership/partnership ethos, the stakeholder, and the trustee perspective. The authors argue these perspectives speak to structural or cultural views of governance, but they leave unanswered critical issues. Given the state of the literature, they argue for going beyond these foundational perspectives. They take a legal normative view of governance, defined as the legal and non-legal rules, norms, conventions, standards, and managerial practices that facilitate the coordination and conflict resolution among the critical constituencies of PSF for the firm as an institution. In so doing, the authors identify a critical unexplored issue in the study of governance of PSFs from a legal-normative view: the definitions of rights and obligations among critical constituencies and how that plays into conflict resolution mechanisms built into PSF governance.

Abstract:
Professional competence is a necessary but insufficient representation of how an individual health-care professional should properly behave in relation to a patient. Medical ethics addresses the further question of the basis on which actions taken by professionals in the context of that relationship are morally right. Children are distinct from adults in ethically relevant ways. They lack autonomy, both in practice and in principle, and their interests are easily ignored or annexed to others. In practice, ethical questions in children are currently addressed using the ‘four-principles’ or by appealing to rights-based arguments. Behind both are ethical theories (particularly deontology, utilitarian consequentialism, and virtue ethics) that are important, but problematic, in children. This chapter reviews existing ways of looking at ethics in end-of-life care for children, considering three specific contemporary debates in medical ethics in children’s palliative care: the principle of double effect, euthanasia, and withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.
