Abstract:
Through in-depth interviews with 12 regular contributors to the Lexington-Herald Leader’s website, www.Kentucky.com, this study attempts to examine how online citizen journalists view the definitions of citizen and professional journalism, as compared to Singer’s three dimensions of professionalism (i.e., cognitive, normative, and evaluative dimensions) as well as their perceived role conceptions of professional and citizen journalists, using Weaver and Wilhoit’s four roles of journalists. Analyses reveal that the main difference in the definitions of the two types of journalists revolved around the cognitive dimension, specifically the education and training that professionals receive. The role conceptions of professional and citizen journalists were similar, with the both groups being described as serving the interpretive/investigative and disseminator roles. The roles of citizen journalists also included the adversarial and populist mobilizer roles.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore how one citizen journalist, Joakim Lamotte, reflects on codes of journalistic standards and ethics. Lamotte is a Swedish citizen journalist who publishes texts reporting on events in society on his Facebook-page. From the Facebook-page, five texts have been sampled for analysis in this study. This is done through using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis as a methodology. The analysis is supported by Erving Goffman's theory of self presentation and Rom Harré and Luk van Langenhove's positioning theory as theorethical frameworks, to explore Lamotte's self presentation and how he is positioning in his role as a citizen journalist. Some of the main results of the study are that Lamotte uses the term independent journalist in the self presentation of his role, but at times includes himself in the group of the public (his audience). Throughout the samples he positions himself against professional journalists and mainstream media, as a way to reinforce his position as an independent journalist. While doing so, he criticises their choices and justifies his own choices relating to codes of journalistic standards and ethics. The study is an example of one citizen journalist with a large audience, in a Swedish context, reflects on codes of journalistic standards and ethics.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to examine the construction of 'professionalism' within the newsroom of the Cape Argus, an English-medium newspaper in post-apartheid South Africa. It is a qualitative study which tries to evaluate how a particular mainstream media discourse of 'professionalism' is enacted and struggled over in the attitudes, behaviour and perceptions of entry-level journalists and news managers at the newspaper. It asks what the process of 'becoming a journalist' requires of entry-level journalists in terms of their previous education and personal qualities - and examines the newsroom strategies employed by news managers when entry-level journalists do not meet these particular requirements. This thesis looks at how the pressures of operating a daily English-language commercial newspaper may shape both the 'professional' expectations of news managers and their ability to positively contribute to entry-level journalists' 'newsroom training'. In attempting to examine the nature of journalistic 'professionalism', this study explores the ideology of knowledge construction within mainstream South African media. Operating from a 'radical democratic' perspective of journalism, which prioritises journalism as a vehicle for diverse social, cultural and political expression, this thesis suggests that South African media education needs to enable journalism students' understanding of the ideological construction of journalistic 'professionalism'.

Abstract:
<p>This paper concerns East German journalists and the changes they have undergone, from working in the totalitarian regime of GDR to enter a western liberal media system. The purpose is to study how professional identity is created in a controlled and authoritarian media system, and how this identity and the journalistic values changes in a transition phase. Through qualitative in-depth interviews with six former East German journalists, who all has worked as journalists after the wall broke down, we are exploring how their journalistic values and the conception of their profession has changed during this tumultuous time. We selected journalists with experience of working in both East Germany and united Germany to be able to see these changes. The result shows that the journalists from GDR used an inner opposition, both to survive the dictatorship and to adapt to the new reality. This means that their level of professionalization, despite the fact that they lived under oppression, was relatively high. In between these two systems a journalistic vacuum occurred which show that a different, more democratic, way of organizing the press is possible. In this vacuum the values of the journalists could be expressed in a way that wasn’t possible in GDR, nor in united Germany.</p>

The problem investigated in the dissertation is the relationship between journalists’ understanding and practice of the professional values in their daily routines and the expansion of news management scenarios into the news production stages. Work presents theoretical framework for the analysis of the professional values as well as the analyses of the power of national media in cultural and economic contexts. Empirical research let to confirm the types of communicative relationships: that of the one-way effect, the mutual effect, and that of the hybrid effect and showed the dynamic position of the journalists during the social interactions of their professional activities. Types of possible manipulative mentality were distinguished in the work. A link between the evaluation of the manipulation and its use was found. The research also showed the relation between the use of the manipulation originated from the materialistic interest and the size of the journalists’ salaries. The connection between the frequency of the manipulation use and the awareness of the use was indicated. The ties between the rate of the manipulation use and the activeness of the contradictory to the professional values behavior were investigated. The research has permitted the detection of manipulative schemes. The use of the manipulation is more often along with the pragmatic professional values. Syfte och frågeställning: Utifrån kvalitativa intervjuer med journalister på dags-, kvälls- och lokaltidningar ska vi undersöka hur Twitter, som informationsteknologi, påverkar journalisters agendasättande roll, deras identitet och journalistik som profession. Detta görs för att i slutet kunna uttala sig om hur Twitter påverkar svensk journalistik. Metod och material: Studien bygger på kvalitativa intervjuer med fem journalister som har jobbat eller är aktiva på GT, Sydsvenskan, Norra Halland, Aftonbladet, Expressen och Café. Det är expertintervjuer och vi har valt att använda oss av det som kallas bekvämlighetsteknik i vårt urval. Vår empiri analyseras sedan genom abduktion. Huvudresultat: Studien finner att Twitter delvis förändrar svensk journalistik. Publiken har idag en större roll i relation till tidningarna men pressen innehar fortfarande den agendasättande makten. Slutligen förändrar Twitter det som kan kallas den journalistiska identiteten. Ett resultat av detta blir att journalistik inte följer de regler som befäster profession – vilket leder till att journalistik idag kan klassas som en semi-profession.

Abstract:
Climate change was the most covered issue in the media in Sweden during 2019 and the use of terms such as “climate emergency” and “climate crisis” increased significantly (Vi-skogen, 2020). These developments and the climate issue pose questions of future practices and purpose of journalism and therefore also its professional boundaries, not the least towards other social actors and institutions. This study focuses on journalists professional boundaries with their sources, specifically non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Environmental NGOs play an important role in climate- and international politics, such as for instance in the setting of United Nations’ climate summits (COPs), and are themselves engaged in producing public information (Powers, 2015b; Wozniak et al. 2017). The study therefore explores journalists’ conceptions of NGOs for climate journalism and these organizations’ roles in the climate reporting during COP25 in Madrid. It uses a theory of boundary work in journalism and applies a methodology of online interviews with journalists from Swedish national news organizations and with two representatives from environmental NGOs based in Sweden. The findings demonstrate four overlapping roles of NGOs in climate journalism based on the practices and views of the participating journalists: dependency; established source; partnering watchdog; and agenda-driven player. It further concludes that the climate issue and COP25 offer a context for blurred boundaries between the two actors, however, it is limited as journalists maintain control over NGOs’ participation in the news making process.

Dans un contexte d'érosion des ventes, de diminution des recettes publicitaires et de bouleversements induits par les innovations technologiques, cette thèse analyse les récentes évolutions, réelles et ressenties, des conditions d'emploi et de travail des journalistes de la presse quotidienne belge francophone. Son objectif est de comprendre comme les journalistes vivent ces évolutions et, à ce titre, comment elles influencent leur trajectoire professionnelle.Cette thèse se fonde sur une démarche de recherche mixte, associant des instruments quantitatifs et qualitatifs. Elle commence par la présentation des résultats d'une large enquête quantitative conduite auprès des journalistes belges titulaires de la carte de presse. Cette partie apporte de nombreuses données sur les profils, les situations d'emploi et les conditions de travail du groupe journalistique. Par ailleurs, elle met en évidence le regard porté par les journalistes à l'égard des changements qui traversent leur métier. Étudier les évolutions des conditions d'emploi et de travail nécessitait la mise en œuvre d'une approche socio-historique et inductive :cette thèse s'est dès lors centrée sur l'étude d'une grande entreprise de presse belge. Elle s'est employée à retracer l'histoire des relations de travail du quotidien de référence Le Soir depuis la fin des années 1990 à 2013. Cette approche met en lumière les logiques managériales qui sous-tendent ces évolutions et la manière dont les différents acteurs de l'entreprise y réagissent. Enfin, cette recherche repose également sur des entretiens biographiques conduits auprès de journalistes qui travaillent ou qui ont travaillé pour le journal Le Soir au cours de la période étudiée. Ces entretiens permettent d'appréhender les principales dynamiques qui fondent les trajectoires professionnelles dans le but de comprendre comment celles-ci sont influencées par les transformations intervenues au sein du journal.Les mutations récentes des conditions d'emploi et de travail des journalistes du quotidien Le Soir ont entrainé de profonds bouleversements identitaires pour les journalistes qui sont de plus en plus confrontés à des tensions entre leur identification au groupe professionnel, leur appartenance au milieu organisationnel et leur trajectoire individuelle. Abstract:
This bachelor thesis, which is also the result of a Minor Field Studies scholarship, examines journalists’ situation in Cuba. The aim is to see the working conditions of the journalists by listening to how they themselves perceive their professional role, what their professional values are and what they see as opportunities and obstacles in their work. A major reason for undertaking this research is the theoretical perspective that emphasizes the importance of journalism studies in developing countries. The results are based mainly on fourteen qualitative interviews with Cuban journalists. By comparing the results with earlier studies including development journalism and studies about digital media in Cuba the study shows that Cuban journalists’ main duty is to defend the Communist Party. Many of the interviewed journalists experience self-censorship as a problem and blame it on Cuba's lack of a press law. Even if journalist salaries are extremely low, just like salaries of other professions in the state, the journalists highlight many positive aspects of their job. The education is free and some of the interviewees have opportunities to travel both within and outside the country because of their job. Cuban journalists are well educated, normally have a great passion for their profession and often have a strong desire to improve their work. The technological development in Cuba is slow but changes the conditions for the journalistic work and will continue to have a great influence on Cuban society.

Le travail retrace l’évolution du métier de journaliste de presse écrite en République démocratique du Congo (RDC) et en Côte d’Ivoire, de la fin de la période coloniale à nos jours. Plus précisément, il s’attache à en comprendre l’émergence et la structuration progressive, à Léopoldville (devenue Kinshasa) et à Abidjan. L’objectif consiste à dégager les éléments qui ont modelé le métier dans les deux pays, pour mieux comprendre la forme qu’il emprunte aujourd’hui.<p>La recherche se fonde principalement sur l’exploitation d’une centaine d’entretiens menés pour la plupart à Kinshasa et à Abidjan, sur l’exploitation de corpus de presse et sur l’exploitation de ressources documentaires et bibliographiques. Elle adopte une perspective comparative visant à mettre en évidence les similitudes et les spécificités qui ont marqué l’évolution du journalisme de presse écrite en RDC et en Côte d’Ivoire.<p>Le travail se divise en quatre parties, dont les trois premières s’arrêtent sur des moments importants de la structuration de la profession. La première présente la façon dont les Congolais et les Ivoiriens se sont investis progressivement dans le journalisme de presse écrite, particulièrement à la fin de la période coloniale, dans un contexte de pluralisme limité. La deuxième étudie la pratique du journalisme et sa structuration, au Congo et en Côte d’Ivoire, durant le long règne des partis uniques. La troisième partie analyse la nouvelle forme que revêt la profession depuis la libéralisation politique et médiatique du début des années 1990. Pour chaque période, l’analyse comporte trois axes destinés à mettre en évidence les éléments utiles à la comparaison. Le premier permet de mettre au jour le système relationnel qui existe autour des journalistes congolais et ivoiriens de presse écrite, afin d’identifier les facteurs sociétaux qui influencent leur pratique. Le deuxième axe dévoile les dynamiques internes du groupe professionnel, dans les deux pays. Enfin, le troisième axe se construit autour des parcours individuels d’un certain nombre de journalistes, ce qui permet de cerner leurs motivations et leur perception du métier.<p>L’approche comparative constitue la quatrième partie de la recherche. Elle s’appuie sur le concept de « configuration » de Norbert Elias pour corréler les trois axes et les trois périodes décrits ci-dessus, pour penser l’émergence et l’évolution de la profession en termes de relations, d’interdépendances et de négociation.<p>L’imprécision des contours du groupe, des profils professionnels et des pratiques apparaît constitutive du journalisme de presse écrite, au Congo et en Côte d’Ivoire. La forme que revêt aujourd’hui la profession résulte d’une suite d’interdépendances, régulièrement renégociées, qui lie les journalistes aux autres acteurs au cours du temps./<p>The thesis traces the development of the profession of newspaper journalist in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Côte d’Ivoire, from the end of the colonial era until today. More precisely, it seeks to understand its emergence and structural development in Léopoldville (Kinshasa) and Abidjan. The objective is to identify the elements that fashioned the profession in both countries so as to better understand its current form.<p>The research rests chiefly on the use of about 100 interviews conducted for the most part in Kinshasa and Abidjan as well on the use of press corpuses and of documentary and bibliographic resources. The research takes a comparative approach that aims to highlight the similarities and specificities that have marked the evolution of newspaper journalism in the DRC and Côte d’Ivoire.<p>The thesis is divided into four parts, the first three of which concentrate on key moments in the profession’s structural growth. Part One outlines the way in which the Congolese and Ivorians gradually became involved in print journalism, in particular at the end of the colonial era, in a context where pluralism was limited. Part Two studies the practice of journalism and its structural elaboration, in the Congo and Côte d’Ivoire, under the long reign of the one-party systems. Part Three examines the new form assumed by the profession since the political and media liberalization of the early 1990s. For each period, the analysis relies on three axes destined to emphasize the elements that are useful for the comparison. The first axis makes it possible to reveal the network of relations existing around Congolese and Ivorian newspaper journalists in order to identify the societal factors influencing their practice. The second axis sheds light on the professional body’s internal dynamics in the two countries. Lastly, the third axis centres on the individual careers of a number of journalists, making it possible to grasp their professional motivations and their perception of the sector. <p>The comparative approach composes the fourth part of the thesis. It relies on Norbert Elias’s notion of ‘configuration’ to correlate the three axes and periods described above in order to examine the profession’s emergence and evolution in terms of relations, interdependencies and negotiations.<p>The vagueness of the group’s contours, of the professional profiles and of the practices appears constitutive of newspaper journalism in the Congo and Côte d’Ivoire. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate how the journalist profession is challenged when the media in Kosovo is intruded by political and business interests and what happens to television journalists and editors; professionals who fight for their right to produce news. The intention with the study is to describe, discuss and analyze the results found in this study around the obstacles faced within the journalist profession in Kosovo caused by the intrusion of political and business interests in journalistic work. One has to also consider that Kosovo is a new state, having weak mechanisms for protecting the rights of journalists and editors. Research method: In this study, the qualitative interview has been used as research method to collect empirical data and to get an idea of the personal experiences of Kosovo journalists. Limitations: This study does not present an investigation into the Kosovo media landscape as a whole and does not give other parties involved in journalistic work (for example media owners, politicians and advertisers) the opportunity to express their views. Further, the voices of rural journalists and editors are not included. Finally, interviewees mainly work as television journalists and editors, reflecting the fact that media consumption in Kosovo is almost exclusively by viewing television. Results: Results suggest that Kosovo journalists and editors are held back in their profession due to political and economical influence on their work. This is carried out in the form of threats and blackmailing in which an external political or economical force personally threats the journalist or editor or threats to pull back financial support unless positive media coverage in a specific media is delivered. Journalists and editors are thus not able to carry out their role as watchdogs and are put in a position in which they feel unsafe and disrespected. Suggestions for future research: For future research, it would be interesting to look into “the other side” of the media, i.e. advertisers, political elite and media companies in Kosovo. A more comprehensive study could maybe shed a broader light on the Kosovo media problems and possibly find some solutions for the future of the existing problems. It can also be interesting to look at international interference in the journalist profession in Kosovo.

The modern environment regarding the media and its scenery has changed. Throughout time, in terms of political standpoint, the press seems to have become homogenous regarding both ownership and divergence; and while the link between politics and the press are seemingly decreasing, larger companies and corporate groups focusing primarily on economy and profit has conceivably taken over. Centrally located, enclosed by this phenomenon remain the journalists. An occupational group which in the name of democracy seems to have taken the initiative to survey and inspect society as a whole. This study aim to conceptualize how parts of this group are reflecting on their occupation, how they reflect on the media regarding its democratic value and foremost how journalists reflect on professionalized journalism in which they sustain to be working by. By examining articles of The Swedish Union of Journalist’s Journal Journalisten, which is examined using a content analysis, specifically Framing Theory and The Swedish Union of Journalist’s outset of 1972, findings suggest that the environment by which journalists are working in and their commitment to professionalized journalism appear to clash, which in terms of media as a whole make its democratic role rather uncertain.

Because of the advent of the Internet, traditional journalism is changing. Advanced technology includes the tools for everyone to publish their thoughts, feelings, photos, and videos, allowing individuals to be citizen journalists. This experimental-design study was aimed at discovering the influence of biographies in people's judgments of the credibility and professionalism of news articles. The study involved four treatments 1: professional journalist feature article with professional journalist biography; 2: citizen journalist feature article with professional journalist biography; 3: citizen journalist feature article with citizen journalist biography; and 4: professional journalist feature article with citizen journalist biography. These treatments were used to determine how the 198 study participants judged the work and biography of a traditional journalist compared to the work and biography of a citizen journalist. Study data was acquired through an online survey. A credibility scale and a professionalism scale were used to determine that, based on the articles used in the study, news consumers do not see professional journalists as more credible than citizen journalists, although news consumers do see traditional journalists' content as more professional.

This study focuses on the development of press freedom and professional journalism in Cameroon since the country's transition to democracy in the 1990s. More precisely, it examines how press freedom and professionalism have become formalized through processes of legislation and institutionalization. To realize this, this study uses a broad literature review and documentary analysis to gain an overview of the evolution of press freedom and the professionalization of journalism in Cameroon. It also incorporates survey, in-depth interviews and newsroom observation to gain additional insights into how Cameroonian journalists go about their daily routines and the extent to which they feel free and autonomous to do so, as well as to better understand both the relationship between the roles of individual journalists and the organizational and societal contexts in which they operate. I contend that it is only through blending the survey, interview and newsroom observation that we can have a broader picture of the gap between role perception and performance in journalism.The study draws from the political economy approach to inform its discussions. It argues that journalism is a socially constructed activity within a specific political, economic, legal and regulatory context. It also draws from the sociology of the professions to analyse the professionalization of journalism in Cameroon, the role perception theory to underpin the journalistic role perceptions of Cameroonian journalists and the role perception and performance gap theory to explain and understand the gap between the various roles Cameroonian journalists believe the media should fulfil and the extent to which they perform these roles in daily practice.The hierarchical news environment includes not only reporters but also editors and directors of news publications, whose job involves ensuring that information reaching the public is ethically sound. From within the Cameroonian newsrooms, the role of editors and directors of news publications as gatekeepers, commercial and economic pressures, the interests of owners may undermine the efforts of journalists in performing their roles in actual practice. From outside the news organization, state interference in the media, the use of repressive press laws, sources, advertisers, political elites and the prevalence of gombo may limit the freedom and autonomy of journalists to live up to their ideals. The last ten years two major movies about journalists have been made in Sweden; Sprängaren and Män som hatar kvinnor. This study has looked closer at the heroine Annika Bengtsson and the hero Mikael Blomkvist from these two movies. Since movies do have great influence on how we see the world it is important to find out how these characters are being portrayed. Also, in a time when journalism is about to become a female dominant occupation it is relevant to see how the female journalist compares to the male. It is important to ensure that the films do not give a wrongful picture of male and female journalists. Women should not only be an inferior object, and the man should not be a dominant and macho-man. In our study we found that these movies have come a long way from the stereotypes of men and women that the audience has become used to. The male hero has a soft side and needs help from a strong female character to manage while the female hero is a strong woman who can manage on her own. And it is their ability to step away from the stereotypes that in the end helps them get the scoop and defeat their antagonists.

The journalistic field is currently disrupted by digital networked technologies and by the rise of public participation. In the case of Hong Kong, the journalists' situation is complicated by the political uncertainties of the territory and the high economic pressures local journalists are facing. This research aims to understand how the legacy press and digital-only media in Hong Kong are patrolling and strengthening their professional borders in order to continue doing their work in this new environment. The journalistic field is analysed in relationship with four main themes: 1) technological convergence and actants, 2) public participation, 3) political pressures, and 4) economic imperatives. Anchored in Pierre Bourdieu's field theory and borrowing from Thomas Gieryn's concept of boundary-work, this comparative study highlights the historical developments that have led to the current configurations of the journalistic field. This empirical research is carried out while fully taking into account social and cultural characteristics of the territory, but especially of the journalistic field in Hong Kong. Apart from such an investigative effort, this research analyses where new actors (e.g. the audience through its participation) and recent technological developments are located within the broader journalistic field. Through a case-study method, relying on in-depth interviews, newsroom observations, and annual reports, this study points out to what extent legacy journalists and digital-only journalists adopt similar or different tactics to enforce their professional boundaries and how they adapt to a new environment brought forward by technological convergence, public participation, growing political and economic pressures. On the theoretical level, this research contributes with an inclusive re-conceptualization of the journalistic field and the concept of boundary-work.

Spurred by the rapid influence of social media in the news industry, an increased number of TV news stations have started assigning dedicated social media journalists (SMJ) in newsrooms to monitor, gather, verify, share news, and engage with audiences on the streams of social media. Consequently, drawing on the diffusion of innovation theory, the present study probes into TV journalists’ perceptions of the implications of the role of this new type of TV professionals in the identity and profession of journalism, the quality of news pertaining to the verification of misinformation, and the news audiences’ attractions and viewership by capitalizing on audience engagement affordances. Moreover, based on an online survey delivered primarily via LinkedIn to a broad spectrum of TV journalists consisting of broadcast, website, and social media journalists in three varied regions of the world—the U.S, Western Europe, and the Middle East—the study demonstrates some concerns about the effects on the code of ethics of journalism. However, most of the surveyed journalists believed that the role of social media journalists SMJ is consistent with the general principles tethered to the professional identity of journalists. Additionally, the study underlines the weight of this role to verify information gleaned from social media before being used in TV news and asserts the significance of engaging with TV audiences to increase the news viewership and enhance their attractions. Accordingly, the study argues that espousing the role of SMJ has become an inevitable fashion in social media-embedded newsrooms. However, the research documents that many TV news channels have broadcast misinformation spread on social media. Furthermore, it unfolds that far less attention has been paid in many TV newsrooms to the potentially positive and beneficial utility of the role of SMJ concerning audience engagement. It signals that a lack of time, tools, strategy, and training causes the dilution of the role quality of SMJ, thereby suggesting that news channels can aggressively tap into this role if these obstacles are conquered. Finally, since research on this concern is still scant at its initial stage, the study shows some venues for future studies in this direction.

Vi använde oss av texter från webbplatserna; Aftonbladet/Sportbladet, Dagens Nyheters sportbilaga och Svenskafans.com. Svenskafans.com är en sida av fans för fans och bygger på supportrars engagemang. Det redaktionella materialet är skrivet av supportrar. Anledningen till att vi valde att ta en huvudnyhet per dag från respektive webbplats var för att Svenskafans.com endast publicerar texter på sin webbplats. Vi ville undersöka om det fanns likheter och skillnader mellan professionell journalistik och medborgarjournalistik inom ramen för sportjournalistik (fotboll). Sportbladet och Dagens Nyheter representerar journalistiken och ”professionella journalister”. I uppsatsen besvaras frågeställningarna; Hur efterföljs de pressetiska reglerna? Finns det några skillnader mellan texter skrivna av en journalist och texter skrivna av en medborgarjournalist? - Språk, Partisk/opartisk, Fokus i texten, Eget/hämtat material Vilket fack kan Svenskafans.com placeras i? Cette recherche caractérise le journalisme informatique tel qu'il se pratique au Québec en 2015 au moyen d'une série d'entrevues semi-dirigées avec 30 participants : des praticiens, bien sûr, mais aussi des responsables des principales entreprises de presse où le journalisme informatique est pratiqué ou a été pratiqué, ainsi que des professionnels de l'informatique afin d'avoir un point de vue extérieur. Elle met notamment en relief deux attitudes à l'égard de cette pratique, attitudes qui s'expriment par un travail-frontière. Il y a, d'une part, les tenants d'une ségrégation entre le journalisme et l'informatique, et, d'autre part, les partisans d'une hybridation entre les deux disciplines. Two prevailing attitudes towards computational journalism are expressed through different types of boundary work. La thèse montre que cette spécialité ne se résume pas seulement à cette face visible et à un déterminisme économique. En croisant les matériaux (archives, entretiens, ethnographie, analyse de contenu), nous verrons que l’histoire de la spécialité, profondément imbriquée dans celle du sport-spectacle, est celle de la légitimation d’un journalisme de marché qui s’accommode de la proximité avec l’objet social dont il traite et ce, malgré l’expression d’un esprit critique à la marge. Considéré comme un journalisme « d’en bas » au nom d’un légitimisme culturel, la spécialité occupe aujourd’hui une place centrale dans la hiérarchie professionnelle, invitant à repenser les normes dominantes du journalisme. Ces spécialistes se sentent d’autant plus « à leur place » qu’ils envisagent leur métier comme un « univers de consolation » pour vivre leur passion du sport<br>Sport journalists are said to be ‘supporter journalists’. They are supposed to be emotional and then barely closed from the detachment required by professional excellence. This dissertation uses cross materials (archives, interviews, ethnography, and content analysis) to give a broader picture of this occupation. It shows that sport journalism’s history has to do with sport business and the legitimization of a market driven journalism. However, such a market driven conception makes do with - sometimes critical - proximity with its object. Such a mass media conception of the sports news is reproduced via schools of journalism. It is all the more efficient since this schools’ teaching fit the economical reality and students’ expectations toward their future work as a “universe of consolation” to pursue their passion for sport. Sport journalism is still regarded from a legitimist point of view as a low-grade journalism, it occupies nowadays a very central position in the professional hierarchy. Then, once should reconsider dominant norms of journalism. Abstract:
This thesis is a qualitative study that examines the correlation between the activist movement #MeToo and the possible effects it had on journalists’ professional conduct with regard to ethics, through the theoretical framework of journalism culture and patriotic journalism. The analysis is based on six semi- structured interviews with journalists that were involved in publications during the height of the #MeToo movement in Sweden. The study indicates that the movement influenced the informants, several found it difficult to differentiate the personal and work-related impact it had on them at the time. Their intense coverage of the movement was fueled by the engaged public, as well as the activist movement itself, which could be interpreted as market orientation or interventionism – or both. Their expressed solidarity with the movement’s values and goals, as well as the fact that their own industry had a specific #MeToo- campaign, positioned the journalists between their solidarity to the society and their professional identity.

This shift is bringing a crisis of professional journalism in the traditional media and the emergence of public journalism based on social media. The Institute of Optimism for Professional Journalism in the Social Media Era (hereafter "lOPS") is a new institutional building for a professional broadcasting organization. The aim of the thesis is to find a new spatial medium to reformulate the function of professional journalism through a systematic friction with public journalism in the process of news production. The thesis deals with the imminent deterioration of the broadcasting station through two phased strategies. First, the thesis studies the trajectory of the relationship between the sphere of professional journalism and the sphere of the public in the broadcasting building. Based on this research, the new type of relationship envisaged by the project is formulated. Second, the thesis addresses systematic friction between professional journalism and public journalism through the architectural interfaces in a tectonic manner. Chinese consumer journalism is a new type of journalist who has been working in Chinese lifestyle magazines since the 1990s. This study examines the elements and roles of magazine journalists’ professionalisation, and contextualizes them with the main trends of Chinese media development during the transition era. While investigating the daily practice of consumer magazine journalism in China, by exploring the ideology and ethics behind their practices and by discussing the original connection between consumer journalism and other more ‘serious’ forms of journalism in China, the Researcher found that consumer journalists actually share the same journalistic ethics and ideology as their ‘serious’ counterparts. To avoid political retribution and commercial pressure, consumer journalists have reoriented the multiple functions of journalism to present their social role as an ‘information vehicle’, ‘serving the rising class’, with ‘independence from media ownership and commercial forces’ and ‘contributing to culture and traditional society’. The elements involved in this new genre of journalism include financial and operational autonomy from the state, and editorial independence from their international parent magazine companies. Moreover, this genre of journalism shows a trend towards a combination of the internationalist, consumerist and cosmopolitan, unlike other journalism in China.

Quel type d‘institutions sont chargées de la protection des journalistes dans les Territoires palestiniens ? Quel est le cadre légal du journalisme palestinien ? Quelles sont les formations suivies par les Palestiniens pour devenir journaliste ? Il existe une « tradition journalistique » dans la région et spécifiquement palestinienne, qui est encore mal comprise. Cet héritage est le résultat de l’histoire de la région et des conditions politiques, économiques et sociales. Abstract:
This study responds to the call for more empirical work to understand the journalism profession in non-Western countries. It critiques the current state of journalism practice in Nigeria to determine how journalists are responding to the numerous professional challenges they face. Journalists in Nigeria appear caught between global phenomena in journalism, such as the impact of new technologies, and those of the environment in which they work, which, some evidence from current literature suggests, is impacting the profession negatively. The literature also shows that factors such as diversity of access to information made possible by technological development, declining audience for news, increasing market pressures impacting news decisions, the declining reputation of the profession, and loss of identity by the journalism profession, though not necessarily peculiar to Nigeria, constitute serious challenges to the news media. With an absence of media conglomerates and a well-defined media system along the lines of those recognised in the developed world, journalism practice in Nigeria presents a case ripe for research. Some evidence in the literature suggests that the standard of journalism practice in Nigeria is deficient in a number of respects. However, little is known about how journalists in Nigeria do their work and the challenges they face, as well as their responses to those challenges. This thesis addresses this particular gap in knowledge. Using the Field Theory and the Social Theory of Journalism, as framework to interrogate the research problem, the research employs convergent parallel mixed methods allowing the use of quantitative and qualitative methods, side-by-side, to gather data in respect of attaining its objectives. Quantitative data were generated through a questionnaire-based survey, while qualitative data were gathered through a series of semi-structured interviews. The research finds that, and illustrates how, the operating environment they face, impacts journalists in their work. Challenges, such as poor or irregular salary, ownership influence, market and social forces were found to influence the way in which journalists perform. However, a key finding is that that although journalists encounter similar challenges in the course of their duties, their response to them varies. Based on these findings, and drawing on explanatory insights from Field Theory and the Social Theory of Journalism, the thesis develops its own explanatory framework coined, The Survival Struggle in Journalism Practice in Nigeria. This leads to the presentation of a series of recommendations, prominent among which is argument that the institutional and regulatory framework of journalism needs immediate strengthening in order to secure an appropriate standard of professional journalism practice in Nigeria.

In this study I examined my thinking and professional growth through the use of reflective journals. The study documents my understanding and use of reflective journals as a tool for learning and thinking over time. I examined my sixteen reflective journals in an effort to make sense out of what it means to be a teacher. In this study I was guided by the question: What are the ways in which I reflect and think about myself as a teacher and my teaching, as evidenced through my journals. Analysis focused in four areas. The first was on the content of the journals. This included my topics, issues, and questions which I wrote about. A second analysis examined how I used my journals to think and reflect. A third component explored how I reflected on my beliefs and practices. The fourth area identified what supported and interfered with my thinking and reflecting. Through this study I examined my learning process and the ways that I use journals to support my thinking and professional development. My findings inform other teachers to consider reflective practice and supports the use of narrative for research. This study provides implications for teacher educators and professional developers to consider participants' prior knowledge and current beliefs when implementing professional programs. Participants need to be recognized as part of the process when involved in professional development.

Deux axes structurent ce travail de recherche : la comparaison franco-allemande et la construction de l’identité professionnelle de journalistes de la presse quotidienne nationale/suprarégionale. La construction de l’identité professionnelle est analysée au carrefour des interactions entre le journaliste comme individu, l’organisation dans laquelle il est employé, le groupe professionnel et l’environnement social, tout en tenant compte du cadre culturel de chaque pays dans lequel ces interactions se situent. Pour mener cette analyse à partir d’une trentaine d’entretiens semi-directifs réalisés avec des journalistes print et web, un regard croisé sur les approches développées par des chercheurs en France et en Allemagne a servi de point de départ. Afin de restreindre l’objet de recherche, la comparaison a été limitée aux rubriques politique, société et culture. La coexistence du journal papier et du site web défie l’identité professionnelle des journalistes, et influence l’image de soi et la perception respective des journalistes print et web. Dans ce contexte, des différences entre le print et le web qui se traduisent par des ressemblances transnationales parmi les journalistes de chaque support apparaissent, même si tous les journalistes se retrouvent unis par des attaches identitaires communes liées à d’anciens idéaux du métier.Malgré ces fortes ressemblances, la construction de l’identité professionnelle est influencée par le contexte national : notamment les différences d’organisation étatique se reflètent à divers niveaux, allant de la structure du paysage de presse et de l’organisation des rédactions et services jusqu’à la formation et la mobilité professionnelle des journalistes<br>The present work is structured by two main perspectives: the French-German comparison and the construction of the professional identity of national daily press journalists. The construction of professional identity is analyzed taking into account the conjunction of interactions between the journalist as individual, the organization in which he is employed, the professional group to which he belongs and his social environment, with consideration of the cultural background of each country in which these interactions take place. Before conducting this analysis on a basis of approximately thirty semi-structured interviews that have been conducted with print and online journalists, we first took a closer look on the approaches developed by researchers in France and Germany. In order to limit the object of this research, the comparison has been restricted to the following specializations: politics, society and culture.The coexistence of the print edition and the newspaper’s website defies the professional identity of journalists and has an impact on the self-perception and the perception of each other of print and online journalists. In this context, differences between print and online journalists appear which lead to transnational similarities between the journalists of each support (print or web), even if all journalists are united by common references linked to ancient ideals of the journalists’ profession.Despite these strong similarities, the construction of the professional identity is influenced by the national context: especially the impact of the differences in each country’s administration can be observed on different levels, for example in the structure of the media landscape and the news organizations and their departments as well as in the journalists’ training and their professional mobility

Since the rise of citizen reporters, blogging, wikis, and pro-am newsroom collaborations, both the professional and academic spheres have come to contest the very definition of a journalist. These analyses, however, often fail to consider the historical complexity of the processes of professionalization in journalism, its systematic institutionalization as an intellectual endeavor, and the fact that there is not – and never has been – a single unifying activity defined as journalism. The lack of a consensual body of knowledge within journalism studies as a field of inquiry, and journalism's problematic status as a discipline within the critical humanities and the social sciences in general, only exacerbate this state of affairs. This thesis proposes to address these issues by reconsidering the historical narratives which shape them, in order to offer a critical review of the social advancement of the 'profession' and the institutionalization of journalism.The first chapter of this dissertation consists of an attempt to problematize the nature of journalism by providing a brief history of the haphazard, unplanned, and largely accidental way that journalism came into being by describing how journalism is the articulation of many genres and traditions of writing and communication. This provides a historical background for the second chapter, which explores the materialization of the values and ideologies that structure Anglo-American journalism as a profession in the nineteenth century, and which still form the basis of its occupational norms today. Following a discussion of the emergence of the reporter, both the modern ideal of objectivity in Anglo-American journalism and the rise of professionalism are situated within the broader context of modernism. The third chapter offers a review of the literature on the professionalization of journalism by considering the journalistic occupation within the system of professions, drawing on approaches from sociology, political economy, communications, and journalism studies. These chapters provide the foundation for an analysis of the emergence of journalism education, which has been historically linked to the notion of journalism as a profession. Considering journalism education as an agent of professional legitimization, the fourth chapter aims to historicize the establishment of journalism departments in a university setting in the United States and Canada by tracing the origins of models of journalism schools in order to provide a context for the study of journalism education and training. The fifth and final chapter of this thesis builds on the preceding chapters to demonstrate how all of these complex tensions contribute to the uncomfortable position that journalistic training occupies within the university. Academically, journalism draws on the humanities and the social sciences, while remaining outside of both. Pedagogically, journalism educators are asked to offer a 'critical' approach to phenomena while also teaching students practical skills of use to those seeking professional careers. This chapter also explores the troubled marriage between communication studies and journalism, culminating in the recent call for the reorganization of the various subjects of journalism (i.e. law, ethics, communication theory, political economy of journalism, media history, etc.) into a single field of Journalism Studies. The dissertation concludes by looking at the continuing impact of these unresolved difficulties on journalism education today.<br>Depuis la montée des reporters citoyens, des blogs et les wikis, la définition même de journaliste en est venue à être contestée tant dans les sphères professionnelles qu'académiques. Le but est de présenter une analyse critique de l'avancement social de la «profession» et de l'institutionnalisation du journalisme. Le premier chapitre de cette thèse tente de problématiser la nature du journalisme à travers un bref historique de la manière hasardeuse, imprévue, et en grande partie accidentelle dont est apparu le journalisme. Ce survol historique met en exergue en quoi le journalisme est le fruit de l'articulation d'un ensemble de genres et traditions d'écriture et de communication. Sur cette toile de fonds repose le deuxième chapitre, lequel explore la matérialisation des valeurs et des idéologies qui ont structuré le journalisme anglo-américain en tant que profession au XIXe siècle et qui forment encore la base de ses normes professionnelles aujourd'hui. Ce deuxième chapitre aborde ensuite l'émergence du reporter pour enfin situer l'idéal moderne de l'objectivité et la montée d'un professionnalisme au sein du journalisme anglo-américain dans leur contexte plus vaste du modernisme. Le troisième chapitre propose une revue de littérature sur la professionnalisation du journalisme en considérant l'occupation de journaliste au sein du système des professions. À cet effet sont mobilisées des approches tant sociologiques, que de l'économie politique, des communications et des études journalistiques. Considérant l'enseignement du journalisme comme un vecteur de légitimation professionnelle, le quatrième chapitre vise à historiciser la création de départements de journalisme dans les milieux universitaires des États-Unis et du Canada en retraçant les origines d'écoles journalistiques. Ceci fournit un ancrage pour l'étude de l'enseignement et la formation journalistiques qui fera l'objet du chapitre suivant. Le dernier chapitre de cette thèse s'appuie sur les chapitres précédents afin de démontrer en quoi toutes ces tensions complexes contribuent à perpétuer le statut équivoque qu'occupe la formation en journalisme au sein du milieu universitaire. Sur le plan académique, le journalisme s'appuie sur les sciences humaines et les sciences sociales, tout en demeurant en dehors de ses deux sphères. Sur le plan pédagogique, les enseignants en journalisme sont appelés à mobiliser une approche critique à l'analyse des phénomènes tout en enseignant aux étudiants des compétences pratiques et directement utiles à ceux qui envisagent une carrière professionnelle. The purpose of the study was to reveal the mechanisms by which a university supervisor leads five student-teachers to reflective professionalism in dialogue journals used during the final field experience of a two year graduate teacher preparation program for teachers of children who are Deaf and Hard-of Hearing. The participants in the study were four female and one male student-teacher in their final semester of preparation, and one female university supervisor. The data comprised of dialogue journals exchanged between the student-teachers and their supervisor during the nine-week field experience. The intention of the dialogue journal assignment was to develop a relationship which would facilitate educational dialogue and promote reflection. The supervisor intended that the student-teachers use the dialogue journals to examine problems of practice and professionalism and to integrate theory and practice. The results showed that the concerns of the student-teachers clustered into four themes, completion of requirements, competence in practice, caring in field experience relationships, and practical and ethical conflict resolution. In addition, the supervisor met her objectives of forming educational relationships and providing a model of teacher-like thinking and problem solving through use of a variety of strategies, both direct and indirect, within a collegial milieu. The essential effect of the supervisory strategy-use was to differentiate student-teacher perceptions of their experiences such that problem-solving was facilitated. In addition reflection was promoted. Three types of reflection were identified. Reflection-in-action resembled Donald Schon's category of that name. Reflection-on-belief produced ethical development, and reflection-on-context produced critique of the contexts of teaching. When overwhelmed, student-teachers ruminated rather than reflected. The supervisor responded by scaffolding a reflective pathway to empowered problem-solving. It seemed that the student-teachers were inducted through these means to the profession of teaching. The conclusions are that dialogue journals provide unparalleled opportunities for thoughtful reflective conversation, providing as they do, built in wait-time. In addition they provide teacher educators with opportunities to be directly involved in the education of children through problem-solving with the student-teachers, thus maintaining their credentials as authentically experienced teachers.
